CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: In 1950, Alfred Hitchcock went back to London for the first time in years to film STAGE FRIGHT with Oscar winner Jane Wyman, Michael Wilding, Richard Todd and the divine Marlene Dietrich. Alistair Sim rounded out the cast, along with a host of talented British character actors including Kay Walsh, Sybil Thorndyke and the hysterical Joyce Grenfell. In this tale of deception and murder with a theatrical background, lies upon lies are told and retold as a suspected murderer hides out from the police with the help of a girl who loves him and is determined to prove his innocence. Then, love turns the tables on her. Dietrich, turns in a slyly glamorous and comic performance as the widow of the victim, and as Hitchcock later stated; "She was the best director I ever worked with." It's all great fun as only Hitchcock could conjure.

Thanks to Wayne Wilson aka Toyuki1 for this wonderful animation! / toyuki
Dietrich is wonderful in" Witness for the Prosecution", too. A great , fun, courtroom drama with a twist ending!
I reviwed it after this. Check out my past reviews.
Steve- I don’t know how I managed to miss this episode as Stage Fright is one of my favorite Hitchcock films. It’s liberally seasoned with Hitch’s dark, dry British humor and perfectly casted. Yes, Marlene stills the picture and is forgiven. Thanks for posting.
My pleasure. I love this one too. Steve
Dear Steve I adore your impersonations of Hitchcock, and you're so right - a second string Hitchcock is still great. The stories about Dietrich's technical knowledge are amazing. Richard Todd said of this movie that she told him she had to be lit so she had her " butterfly" of shadow beneath her nose. And when she worked with the English child star Jeanette Scott on "No Highway in the Sky" she told her all about the difference between the lenses and took a real interest in teaching the girl. I saw Alastair Sim as Prospero in The Tempest at the Old Vic in the 1960s and Marlene in the West End in the 1970s so some of the cast are dear to me in memory, and this film is certainly worth a viewing. Thank you.
She did the same for Jane Wyman. " You've got to work on you outfits and your hair and make -up!"
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Dear Steve, The trouble for me in judging Jane Wyman is that I have never seen "Johnny Belinda". Everyone of note has turned up on television (we even have an entire channel here now, devoted to old movies), so I've seen everything of note starring Loretta Young, Jean Arthur, Rosalind Russell, Irene Dunne, and Cary Grant with everybody. But the only Jane Wyman films I've seen have been the Douglas Sirk ones - nice colour ... So whenever she's on screen in this, I just see a hole. Thank you so much for replying - I watched this review yesterday because I'd been beaten near death by an osteopath and needed somebody nice in my life. And today, Coronation Day here, has been very emotional for me because I remember the last one. My mother and aunt and I climbed out of the windows and on to the balcony of our flat just behind Regent Street, from which we could see through to the procession, which took a longer route back then. Torrential rain, just like today, but then and now unforgettable. Thank you so much for all your knowledge and wit.
@@alidabaxter5849 Congratulations and thank you for your lovely memory of The Coronation. i don't see how you could help but be so moved. As to Wyman, she was an actrress who worked her way up the ranks and thanks to Billy Wilder and' The Lost Weekend", she movd into Oscar country and wasn't recarded as an Eve Arden wisecracking sceond banana anymore. 'Johnny Belinda" is such a koving film and every level and all the performances are incredible. It also has one of Max Steiners most beiuatifil scores and a favorite of his. However, I think the movie that really brought me around to her, was her stern and seemingly cold hearted mother in Clarence Brown's " The Yearling". I woman who had survived the deaths of five of her children and wouldn't allow herself to bbe close yo her son for fear of losing another. It was such an unlikeable character and so brave of her to take it on. She then comes through in the end witth a tearful scene at his bedside when he finally returns home, that always brings me to tears. Touching , versatile & subtle. I liked her. Steve
Thanks. You are so right, Steve. Indeed, I heard that Hitchcock said to his cameraman " Just let her light her own scenes. She probably knows more about it than you do." Cheers.
@miltsar
I'D LOVE TO DO "A FOREIGN AFFAIR", BUT ALAS IT ISN'T ON DVD! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! I ONLY REVIEW WHAT'S EASY FOR MY VIEWERS TO RENT. HOWEVER, AS SOON AS IT IS!!!!!
THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Well THAT's why you won't review my requests. Im sorry for hounding you so often and will keep that in mind. Perhaps you should state this on your home page so we don't sound so repetitious in our pleading.
I love Joyce Grenfell with her 'lovely ducks' booth at the fair. Just another of the great English character actors Hitch got for this.
Isn't she a riot? her auto-biographies are fun as well as her comic monolugues, which you can catch on RUclips. God Bless YouTUbe!
Second string Hitchcock is like the best efforts of other directors. Very Well said Steve!
Yup. He was so innovative, there is always something to discover and ultimately admire. I marvel at the glamour of "The Paradine Case", The acting in "I Confess", especially Monty Clift, who gives one of the great subtle performances in any Hitchcock film, "Stage Fright" for the flashback lie and all the wonderful British character actors and on and on. Thanks for watching! Steve
Always do at least one impression on each of these episodes, Steve, you're so good at them! Your Hitchcock was a HOOT! I so enjoy this series...
Thanks, Buddy!
The more I have learned about Ms. Dietrich, the more to love! So love your reviews, dear!
She was phenominal and had the most interesting personal life of any actor. Fascinating woman.
Happy Anniversary! Your reviews are filling my nights with so many wonderful movies.
Hooray! That's my job!
Happy Anniversary Steve! I recently stumbled across your channel, and I love your reviews! Here's to many more years of Tired Old Queen at the Movies!
I'll toast to that!!!...Nine years later! LOL! Thanks for watching!
Richard Todd said of this film he had only really done a couple of films before this one as he had only really been on the stage, he just said of it that it was all rather surreal as there he was suddenly talking to Alfred Hitchcock he couldn't quite believe it.
And he's SO good in it! The perfect Hitchcock villian. He's sexy, charming and then terrifying. I'm sorry Hitch didn't use him again. Thanks so much! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 I so agree Steve he was wonderful as you can see in my ID picture he certainly was a gorgeous looking man and was a real life hero in the war, God Bless keep up the good work loving your reviews.
oh btw Steve I'd love your take on that magnificent meller drammer "Elmer Gantry" .. I don't know enough about Jean Simmons but I loved her in it .. and omg WHAT a supporting cast .. and religious-huckster themes are always (sadly) timely ..
Jean Simmons should have won for that movie!
Happy Anniversary, Steve ... You've given a weekly present with your reviews! Thanks SO MUCH!!
Yay, Steve and Johnny! One year and many more to go! Love you guys!
My favorite line is Patricia Hitchcock as Chubby Bannister: "What a day! What a day!"
She's so adorable.
you sold me -- sounds like one to own!! especially with Marlene being in it
It's alotta fun, everyone's great and she's terrific and very funny.
@hunkdujour
Thank you so much for all your wonderful support on Hunk Du Jour! I'm thrilled and very grateful!
OXOXOX
TOQ!
Speaking of Dietrich, she only gave one interview for television in her entire life. That was in 1971. The interview was made by two reporters from Swedens Public TV (SVT), while she was in Denmark. Bits of it can be seen here on youtube, but now SVT has just released the whole interview. You can watch it here:
svtplay.se/v/2304419/marlene_dietrich_1971
She was 70 years old at the time!
God Bless Dietrich and RUclips!
@jazzyvocalfan
I LOVE "Flamingo Road"! It's just about my favorite Crawford film. It is definitely on the list! Thanks for reminding me and for watching!
Happy Anniversary Steve! The first of many hopefully. I look so much forward to your reviews - they're great!
Thank you SO much for watching! Please tell your friends. Do me a favor and push the "LIKE" button. Much appreciated!!
Happy Anniversary, Steve and Johnny! I saw Stage Fright a few months ago and loved it, it has so many facets. I thought Jane Wyman did a great job, and how interesting it was for her weird cheeriness to be in a Hitchcock film.
I've watched since the beginning, as well. Many, many more TOQATMs to come!
Yeah. She was not his favorite and gave him rather a hard time because she couldn't bear how glamourous Dietrich looked and she had to play such a drab mouse. he loved Marlene though.
Such a favorite! Of course there are the "major" Hitchcock movies like Rear Window, but I actually kind of prefer this and Notorious...and Rebecca...I almost think of them as kind of innocent or naive. I love that the song "The Laziest Girl in Town" is the inspiration for "I'm Tired" in Blazing Saddles.
And the "lovely ducks" part...so good!
Thanks for giving this one a review. It's too often neglected.
I so agree, Ruth. Everyone in the top of their form and the Britsish actors are so brilliant, right down the the smallest role. Thanks for watching and have a glorious summer? Best; Steve
lordy you pack so much explication, edification and lovely minutiae into a handful of minutes in this one .. laffed out loud, let's see, at least seven times ..
happy anniversary Steve and Team Steve! thank you for making the world less awful and more interesting
I'm so glad thank s a million for watching!
Happy One Year Anniversary to my favorite film historian! Love you!! patti
Such a fantastic review. Just wanted to know what people though of the film and ended up having a great time here! So personable, I felt like we were actually having a conversation! Can't wait to check out this movie, thanks so much! :)
Oh, Thank you, Dan; What nice compliments! Thanks for watching and I hope you will subscribe. Have a SAFE & Happy New Year! Best Wishes; Steve
Thank you again and again Steve!
Once again a brilliant and insightful and funny commentary!
Please review A Foreign Affair ...it has one of my most favorite songs by Dietrich...."Black Market"...with the immortal line " its a dandy, 6 by 9 just your size and the throw away line "You like my first editions? ...they're yours that's how I am ! "
Subtle, sexy and SO suggestive. The essence of the Dietruch alure. I like "A Foregin Affair" as well. Blly Wilder and Dietrich. A wonderful combo!
Steve, I love your reviews. You are the best thing on You Tube. I am actually watching Stage Fright right now on TCM , as for a Foreign Affair it's on TCM this Saturday Oct 16 at 8 . Congrats for one year of fun and looking forward to many more. Love you, love you, love you
Thanks you so much, Cheryl!
one of my fav dietrich movies of all time!
Mine too!
Wonderful review, all your anecdotes are so interesting Steve! I look forward to another year of you and Johnny's marvellous videos.
Thanks so much! Much appreciated!
Happy Anniversary Steve and Johnny! You guys have made my year brighter and a little more lighter. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of your reviews and they are a special treat I look forward to each and every week.
In a world full of turmoil, you and Johnny are a great escape just like the movies you review. A big THANK YOU and hope you are on for many more years.
You are spot on! This is a great movie, and quite glamorous!
I think so too. Such fun!
Happy Anniversary guys!! I love your reviews and you!! :o)
Happy anniversary, hope u keep it up for many years to come!
Nice review,love your Hitchcock impersonation
Thank you, Mr Tony!
Thanks Steve! Another great review. Can't believe it's been a year already!
don't know if you will read this, but I saw this documentary in which this German Jew, who had cone to the US with his foamy in 1938, joined the US army. And he said that Dietrich performed for the USO, and he went to her after the performance and told her how his mother had worked with her in Bwrlin in the 1920s. And Dietrich remembered g is mom and gave het love to him.
.And this is a WWII vet abd he was a little weeoy
I thoroughly enjoy your inteligent, informative, witty and humerous movie reviews.I remember you from one of my favorite movies,"Trick".Your song number is great!I like your doll collection. How many do you have? Well, keeep up the good work.
Thanks so much, Zander! I loved that movie as well.
Who would have dreamed of a cast like this ? Critically , the film leaves much to be desired but the cast (Kay Walsh is fun too)
has me re-watching it regularly.Richard Todd is very good ; just compare this with “A Man Called Peter” or “The Dam Busters”.
Richard Todd was very good is suspnse films. Those eyes could be so sinister. He was also so beautiful. I think Hitch should have used him more. Thanks for watching! Steve
I watched stage fright years ago I really enjoyed it this movie is definitely underrated to me because it doesn't get talked about much the movie is just brilliant
I think so too. The characters are so wonderful and I love the lie in the flashback. Steve
@NOtoPROP8
Read up on Dietrich. She was the lover of many, many women.
Steve Hayes I have a friend who knew Dietrich in Paris. Her lover was a ballerina from Soviet Georgia. She ate rather little, preferring a steak with a raw egg on it.
Love this movie! Are you planning to review The Wrong Man?
Nope. Sorry. Not a fan of 'The Wrong Man". Can't like 'em all, I guess. But, I lovge "Stage Fright". Thanks for watching.
Nice review
You're right second rate Hitchcock is better than many directors' first rate stuff. Stage Fright has Marlene Dietrich singing "The Laziest Girl in Town" and telling Jane Wyman "No confidences please, just pour the tea." Hitchcock made another movie in Britain before Stage Fright the period piece Under Capricorn which takes place in colonial Australia! Under Capricorn with Ingrid Bergman, Margaret Leighton, and Joseph Cotten, is third rate Hitchcock. I don't think I'd sit through that again, even during this pandemic!
Bewteen you and me, I wouldn't either. I have no love for "Under Capricorn". I also like 'Stage Friht" for all the wonderful Brit character perfromances. Fabulous!
Happy anniversary Steve!
Love your videos! You should do more Dietrich. Maybe A Foreign Affair or one of the von Sternberg films.
It's on my list!
Yes! You did a Marlene D movie - finally! :) I know I asked for one - more than once...lol - and now I'm a happy happy xof! hugs
Finally. Gotta' keep you happy.
It should also be noted, that Dietrich's Allied war effort was after Hitler ordered her back to Germany to help Germany's war effort
She went above and beyond in her work. Even slept with General Patton.
poetcomic1 My, that *is* going above and beyond lol
@@poetcomic1 Well, SOMEBODY had to!
Maybe Hitch & Dietrich weren't crazy about Wyman, but I think she is perfect in the role. Hitch had blind spots after all, he preferred Vera Miles to Kim Novak!
Good point.
Great review of an excellent flick, but one quibble. Even though Alastair Sim plays a "character" part in this, he's hardly a character actor. In fact the year this came out he was voted the most popular film star in England. A wonderful actor and a comic genius, IMHO.
Who said he wasn't?
EXCELLENT ENTERTAINMENT 👍
one of my favourite films! Thank you!
Of course! Thanks for watching!
Richard Todd sinister. OMG found myself walk around the house humming “Tired old queen at the movies.
LOL! You say that like it's a bad thing. I do it all the time! Thanks so much, this made my day! Steve
DEAR MR. HAYESL ANY UPDATES ON THE BLUE VEIL ? HAS IT BEEN RELEASED FOR DVD?
Dunno.
I would love to hear your review of Spencer's Mountain, the 1963 film that starred Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. I think this is a beautiful movie.
It is. Thanks for the reminder. James MacArthur...woof!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ ... Oh yeah!
Good movie
I love marlene dietrich! She is the best!
Me too! Thank you SO much for watching! Please tell your friends. Do me a favor and push the "LIKE" button. Much appreciated!!
I enjoyed this review. It's fun to try to imagine a man having an affair with the Dietrich character. She's such a freak. I hope you get around to reviewing "Flamingo Road" soon.
I reviewed "Flamingo Road" after I did this one. Chcelk with my back reviews.
Happy One Year Anniversary to my favorite film historian! Love you!! patti
