  • CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, two of Hollywood's most iconic and openly admired stars by the gay community, have a field day and deliver the comeback performances of the century in Robert Aldrich’s horror classic WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (’62). The two stars are both incredible as sisters who carry too many secrets and whose relationship deteriorates into madness and murder. With solid support from Oscar nominee Victor Buono, Marjorie Bennett, and wonderful Maidie Norman as the caretaker who knows too much, it’s an unforgettable tale of suspense that will have you riveted from beginning to end. "Tired Old Queen at the Movies," where old Hollywood lives on.

The greatest summary of the iconic movie. I saw the movie at the famous LOEWS THEATER on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn when it was released. It was a packed house, and you could hear a pin drop.
Aldrich created a claustrophobic tension with a magnificent direction.

Happy Pride Steve and JohnnyI Great review as always! This is one of my all-time favorite horror films, and should be mandatory viewing for young gay men, along with Steel Magniolias, All About Eve, and Valley of the Dolls.
Fun fact for those unfamiliar with the movie, Bette Davis's daughter BD played the curious teenager next door. In the 80s, she followed Christina Crawford by writing a book that trashed her mother, and in later years became an unhinged homophobic preacher in rural Virginia.
Ryan Murphy dramatized the behind-the-scenes mayhem in Feud: Bette and Joan. Several books have been written on the subject,:for me, the best is Shaun Considine's The Divine Feud that Murphy used as a source for the show.

Thank you so much for talking about Baby Jane, one of the best movies of all time! You are so right that it holds up beautifully. Do you believe Bette's story that Joan asked people not to vote for her? I find it hard to believe that Miss Crawford had that much influence. I also think the rumors of a lifelong feud between them has been blown way out of proportion. But it's fun to speculate about all the stories and the gossip. Personally, I like to think the two stars were on the phone for hours a few days a week, laughing at all the gossip and dishing on everyone in Tinseltown. Great acting by all concerned in this film, including the marvelous Anna Lee as "that nosy Mrs. Bates". And let's not leave out the stellar cameo by Miss B.D. Merrill aka Sherry aka Hyman as the ungrateful teenager next door. Who could have guessed she would grow up to be an ungrateful adult? Another great video, Steve! And your Cockney accent is spot on!!

They were both strong willed, competative women who struggled for years to get to the top in a male dominated business and fought hard for everything they got. I think, they respected each other to a degree, but they also weren't about to be out done by the other. They weren't chums, but there was a ceretain respect in the end.

Steve! My favorite sequence is in the opening- The Duesenberg (1931 Model J Disappearing top convertible by Murphy), turns into the driveway. The driver's hand releasing the brake and later shifting to low. The elegant leg and high heeled feet engaging the clutch and finally flooring the accelerator. Correctly shot inside the Duesenberg. Beautifully done.

If anyone shoyld have been nominated for supoporting actress it should have been Marjorie Bennett. Bottom line, it was a tough year, just like 1950, when she didn't get nomianted in for either " Harriet Craig" or " The Damned Don't Cry", the competion was fierce. Thank you so much Steve for reminding everyone that this is REALLY a good film. When something becomes a "camp classic", it is frequently assumed that it must be so bad that it's good. That is not the case here. Similarly, people only seem to talk about the "gimmicks" in the two films that Vincent Price made for William Castle. Yet they are both effective, tidy little low budget thrillers on their own. Of course, they are not in the same league as this masterpiece. The point I'm laboring towards here is - thank you for reviewing the film, ant not the "gimmick". As always, love to you both - and Happy Pride !

Lawrence Tierney plays an ex-con, rough trade that's not too unlike the actor. Later in his life, Tierney notorious volatility terrified the "Seinfeld" cast and crew as guest performer. Nobody wanted him back. According to the producers, Tierney took a knife from the set and hid it under his jacket.

Hey. Steve & Johnny! I always forget B.D. Hyman is Mrs Bates' daughter in this! This is still a smart film, right down to its "twist" towards the end. I heard Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave did a remake? I wonder if Olivia deHavilland and Joan Fontaine were ever considered? Or Bette and Miriam Hopkins? Random thoughts. I have finally conquered my fear of the fruit cellar scene in Psycho after about 25 yesrs. Next, I have to stop flinching at Joan Crawford's death makeup in this movie and the great Dorothy Comingore"s makeup after the opera scene in Citizen Kane. I'm honestly getting there, Steve. Congratulate me! And haveva happy 🌈

Well then, congratulations! There were nere any orher actresses considered for this film, that came later with " Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte". Thank you for conquering your fears and watching! Happy Summer! Steve

I never dreamed there was anyone out there who could do a spot on Marjorie Bennett!!!!!
I was 7 when this movie came out and of course I saw it and it is still one of my favorite movies.

Bette Davis was truly terrifying as Baby Jane Hudson in this film! She really had a hell of a time vamping it up in just about every scene she was in
