- The Outlaw who inspired Zorro, Lone Ranger, and Batman!
Joaquín Murrieta, also known as the "Robin Hood of El Dorado," was a legendary figure in the California Gold Rush era. He is often depicted as a Mexican patriot and bandit who fought against the injustices faced by Mexican-Americans during the mid-19th century.
Murrieta became a well-known figure, leading a band of outlaws who targeted the wealthy, often seen as avenging the wrongs done to Mexican-Americans.
His legend has permeated popular culture, influencing literature, films, and the creation of iconic characters like Zorro, Lone Ranger, and Batman.

The Lone Ranger is inspired by a real-life slave turned lawman, Bass Reeves, and Zorro is based on the fictional character, The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Tell em bout it, these guys obviously have no clue what they are talking about! The blind is definitely leading the blind and that's why it's so important to read 📚 for yourself and not just buy into everything someone tells you
The Shadow inspired Batman.
Dude, if you're talking about the inspiration for Batman, and you DONT bring up th Shadow, I can't listen to you.
Great story, but isn't a dollar a bit much to pay for a peep show back then?
Reminds one of how Dr. Freeze's head is in a jar in Batman Beyond.
Maybe the *head-in-the-jar* trope might still be loosely alluded to with Mr. Freeze being a head in a case for fifty years in _Batman Beyond._
Don’t forget The Scarlet Pimpernel was also inspiration for zero and Batman.
Murrieta inspired Zorro not Batman
19th century California was a wild place (and really it was crazy at least until Los Angeles stole everyone else’s water by the 1930s.)
You should look up Bass Reeves.
Bass Reeves did NOT inspire The Lone Ranger. The creators of The Lone Ranger themselves said that Zorro was their inspiration, and the name “The Lone Ranger" was inspired by real life Texas Ranger John Reynolds Hughes, who had a book written about his life called “The Lone Star Ranger."
After reading up a little on him, I want to do a deep dive and maybe turn him into a topic of his own. His story sounds amazing.
@@J4remi Bass Reeves story is indeed fascinating. But he was not the inspiration for The Lone Ranger.
The Lone Ranger and the Green Hornet are blood relatives blood will tell they say.
Scarlet Pimpernel was the og vigilante. French nobility that inspired the mexican version, Zorro.
Baroness Orkzy for the win.
You’re right, I didn’t realize Scarlet Pimpernel’s got Zorro beat by a decent margin! Good call
Zorro is Spaniard not Mexican
@@ΠαναγιωτηςΑγγελ technically, yes.
If you want to go back and look at masked avenger types, in fiction, you should look up the Scarlet Pimpernel.
Scarlett Pimpernell
I would say it's a combination of characters. One character that gets overlooked that the author says directly influenced him was also the book The Scarlet Pimpernel. That's where he got the idea for the dandy millionaire the secret identity. When you read The Scarlet pimpernel it's very much a Zorro type story.
I agree, that it’s definitely a character inspired by many. The comments have me ready to read the scarlet pimpernel for sure! That’s one character I want to learn more about.
This story is amazing. I had no idea.
The Gold Rush was in 1849 NOT 1949.
The mask of Zorro really told the Zorro story very well and the Joaquim story as well.
Bass Reeves was NOT the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. That's an urban myth. The creators of The Lone Ranger themselves admitted that Zorro was their inspiration, and the name of the character was inspired the book “The Lone Star Ranger," based on real life Texas Ranger John Reynolds Hughes.
Bass Reeves inspired the Lone Ranger.
was going to be my comment
Bass Reeves is another true life inspiration with a story worth sharing for sure!
Bass Reeves was NOT the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. That's an urban myth. @@44excalibur As popular as your explanation is, it is incorrect. Bass Reeves was indeed the inspiration for the Lone Ranger.
@@sawboss5794 No, Bass Reeves was NOT the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. There has never been any documented evidence of this. People like you desperately WISH Bass Reeves was the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, but again, the creators of The Lone Ranger stated specifically that they did not base the character on any real life individuals, and were inspired by Zorro, because both the Lone Ranger and Zorro wear masks. Bass Reeves was a US Marshall, not a Texas Ranger, so your assertion makes no sense. The title "The Lone Ranger" is inspired by the the book based on real-life Texas Ranger John Reynolds Hughes, "The Lone Star Ranger." Now, got any actual evidence to back up your claim?
Damn dude.
My great grandfather knew joaquin murrieta and this guy seems to match the story that was passed down to me. My grandma brought me to his hideout (close to the family ranch). It’s really cool and seems untouched like walking back in time to the 1800’s. Since he knew where his hideout was I’m assuming he may’ve been more involved than he admitted to haha. Anyway, we all grew up zorro and huge Batman fans, and the origins are a little closer to home for my family. Literally.
This is one of the coolest comments I’ve ever gotten under one of our clips! I’m working off books, so it’s really awesome to hear someone with a personal anecdote. Thanks!
