Commander- “Comrade, hand me the Plash Palatka you’ve been issued. We’re building a base tent.” Solider- “But it’s my poncho, I’m using it.” Commander- “Our poncho.”
Most Red Army / Soviet soldiers just learnt how to and use these when in basic training, during field exercises they used large Squad Tents as they rotated through the exercise. They made sleep sacks Sleeping bag with their Veshimeshok back packs and Greatcoats otherwise.
There are a lot of options for using a raincoat tent: protection from bad weather; equipment for a waterproof sleeping place; transportation of the wounded; disguise; closing the entrance to the dugout, hut, etc. There are known cases of the use of raincoats-tents stuffed with hay for a single crossing of water obstacles
I believe that some form of rain cape was used in the Russian army all the way back during Alexander the firsts reign (16??-1748) and evolved into the plash palatka
Morning AOC great video by the way 👍🏻 I’m interested in your sleep system could you give me some info on it please 👍🏻👍🏻 I already have a M81 woobie Thanks in advance Stu 🏴
My sleep system has changed a lot since I made this video. I will be doing a new gear video for my upcoming thru hike of the OT and it will have my most current sleep system in it. In this video I just used a closed cell foam pad and old sleeping bag from my time in the Army.
@@arkansasoutdoorschannel1867 Thank you I ordered one of these to use as a throw on raincoat but everyone basically films from the waist up. At 5'8" I should have nearly full cover from it. 👍
Honestly I'm not sure but I dont think so. You would just have to risk it and see. I'm sure if you got it and it was too big you could do a hem job on it to fit.
I remember a camping trip in Ontario, where the mosquitoes were so bad my brother & I stood in the smoke column to reduce the number of bites. We gave up and skooted into our tents, and after we killed the mosquitoes in our tents we noticed a buzzing outside...sounded just like a distant highway with truck traffic. Unbelievable! Millions of mosquitoes trying to get at us. This type of tent/tarp would be useless in big mosquito country!
love the Plash Palatka, great video excellent content, i have a fb group called ...Polish & Hungarian Lavvu owners Worldwide...would be great if you joined us and shared your adventures we also love the Palatka, a big thumbs up and subscribed and shared video to my group...atb
@@arkansasoutdoorschannel1867 never tried the Hungarian one yet but in the pipeline, the group is growing very quickly with members in over 30 countries
I don't know anything about commie soldiers during WW2 . . . nor do I understand why so many "reenactors" are so fascinated by them LOL . . . . but soldiers, as a whole, are not going to be trapping themselves inside a little pup tent like this. It's a death trap unless you're far away from "the front" (generally out of mortar and artillery range) and if you're that far away you build or find something better. I could easily see this used as a raincoat . . . or in a two-man fighting position, it could be used overhead for shelter. BTW, full disclosure . . . I carry one because they're terrific (Fall through Spring) when the Sun goes down in the mountains. They stop the wind and you can vent body heat very quickly just by opening the cloak. They also make a great quick ground cloth. As far as "quick shelter" you CAN use the stick (which is the official way, I suppose) but you can also make a "loop" where the stick goes (see 6:04 for an excellent view) and then tie the loop to a tree. Think of how you set up a plow point of flying wedge. What that does is give you a center line between the plash palatka and the tree and you can hang plastic, cheap mylar, another poncho, etc which gives you more cover from the rain. It's also much easier to get into without the stick! I just wish I could find someone selling them for 20 Bucks!!! If you know anyone, Arkansas Outdoor Channel, let me know. I hit the Thumb up and Subscribed. You put out good info.

Woobie represent. Looking into getting one of these for a pilgrimage in Spain. Thanks for the video Bo.
If waterproofing is important make sure to give one a good coat of bees wax.
Good video Just bought one myself. They're $60 plus now but still worth it in my opinion.
Wow I didnt know the price had gone up
these plash palatkas cost upwards of $60 to $80 now.
WOW! No way!
Nice video good job thanks
No problem. Thank you. I'll put out more camping videos this fall. It's just too hot to enjoy camping this time of year.
When joining together don't the toggles from one go into the button holes of the other on the shelter ridge rather than lashing the open top?
Yes it can be done that way but it is quicker to just run a ridge line or attach them with the cordage. But you are correct you can use the toggles.
'Palatka' is a town in North Central Florida that is located on the St. John's River.
Very nice video, thank you!
Thanks I try to put out a good video for you guys
Very cool 🤠

About how tall are you and how far does it reach down as a poncho?
I am 5'11" and it hangs around my knees.

Blame that one on your blood type.

Most welcome
Plash palatka-raincoat tent
In US you setup your poncho, in mother Russia poncho sets you up !

I love the fb group idea. I like the Plash for the more day to day stuff but the Hungarian ones make a better tent / shelter I think.
