I used to own an NVA shelter-half in the mid 90´s. Shortly after the reunification of the two German countries, the markets were flooded with NVA surplus and getting a full set of equipment was easy. I remember setting up my half tent in the garden, wearing an NVA combat uniform and webbing kit and just spend sunny afternoons under my half tent. Greets from a German living in Japan.
Another great review!, thanks john!, as a teenager i spent many happy nights under these older east german poncho/tent halfs, one tip i found very helpful, to inprove water repellency, they are better when given a light coating of fabsil or similar waterproofing spray
There are a lot of options for using a raincoat tent: protection from bad weather; equipment for a waterproof sleeping place; transportation of the wounded; disguise; closing the entrance to the dugout, hut, etc. There are known cases of the use of raincoats-tents stuffed with hay for a single crossing of water obstacles
I have heard of most of those options you listed. But I never heard of stuffing it with hay for floating across water. That is very interesting! Thanks for watching my video and for your comment!
Nice job John, I almost bought a set of both palska , and nva tarps , but found a place in Georgia, hesse antiques, that still have and sell the polish, shelter halves, as well as poles (aluminum), stakes(pins)unknown as to if they are in the pole halves, last week I bought two polish halves, and nva stake and pole set, that set my daughter snatched away from me she like the polish, set I was so impressed I went ahead and ordered one along with the proper poles,
I've bought a couple of things from Hessen before. Had good service with them. I don't own a Polish Lavvu yet but I heard they are nice. You're gonna have to hide this new stuff from your daughter! Thanks for watching and for your kind comment! I hope you enjoy your shelters!
Hey John I think total cost of 2 pole sets and two half shelters would be 35.00, that's cheap!!! I sure wish you were close to me in Georgia, cause I'd let you evaluate, it along with a complete Swedish zeltbahn
Great video. I've got both the NVA and Russian. My Russian Palatka gets used daily at work for a quickie hammock chair on my lunch break. Haven't tried to button them up together yet. Gonna try that. Thanks for sharing, atb, John
I love my little NVA ponchos, I used to own five but my two oldest children now each have one that they claimed. Three together make a pretty good size lavu type shelter with a 55" or 140cm pole.
if it reaches the upper 20's you're cold? As a Wisconsinite that's lived in Florida for half a year, the "cold" down there is way warmer than that. Saw people wearing winter coats in 50° weather lol
Ozan Kiraz Yes. You are correct. A simple but great surplus bag. I put a set of Alice pack LC1 shoulder straps on it to help it carry better. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
good review John...i spent last night sleeping under my 9x12 tarp...my plash palatka worked great as a ground cloth...i have set the plash palatka in a plow point in a heavy rain and it worked well to keep the weather out while i enjoyed a cup of coffee...i have yet to spend the night under mine though at some point i plan on doing so. amazing that the E German and Russian tarps matched up so well...who'd a thunk it? Stay safe down there in snake n gator land amigo...atb...woods
Thanks Woods. I haven't slept under mine yet either. I have only used it for those afternoon Florida showers we always get. Just remember if you are trying pair two together that you get the same size tarps for both. That makes it really nice. As always, thanks for watching and for commenting!
Thanks WW....the folks a bit north and west of me have been getting the worst of it...but it has definitely effected my mountain hikes...you ever decide to sell one of them Lavvu shelters let me know amigo...woods
I haven't had any problems with mine yet. I've had them in the rain twice. Once as a shelter and once wearing it as a poncho. They had a good coating on them when I got them and neither look like they were issued. You might try resealing yours before giving up on them.
Martin Outdoors no problem, a lot of people don't realise they come in different sizes, the 185cm ones seam hard to find, which is probably a blessing as I've far too much kit:) Good luck
Mad Jack Tramper . That is really a communist thing lol ' lets put the tarps together and make a brigade size shelter hahaha . Nice info Mad Jack thanks .
hey buddy, excellent review and showing. I was thinking about getting one of these a couple of weeks ago but they're so expensive. Do you know of a cheaper option besides eBay? I'm always looking to save a buck or two. Also, I was wondering if you were interested in reviewing a ration on your channel? Send me a private message if you are. Keep up the excellent work!
I bought both of my tarps a while back at the same time from here: www.varusteleka.com/en/group/tarps-and-shelter-halves/712 But it looks like they are out of the plash Palatka at this time. I bet they will be getting more. The shipping to the US is a flat rate of $9.99 so that is what I paid to get both tarps from Finland to here. They take Paypal too. When I order, I try to get at least two items to save on shipping.

Christian Williams I don’t know right off. But they are not light. I have mine stored right now. If I get them out anytime soon, I will try to weigh them for you. Thanks for watching my video!
well john, thx4the look at this. it's really just not fully adequate, is it? i mean come a good rain and thing might be miserable in it, correct? on one of your other vids on a camping trip somebody had a tent underneath another covered shelter (2 roofs of rain protection) and it rained on that trip. i bet that twin roof was nice then (2 water barriers) when it was raining. these 2 ponchos... i just don't know that this is a really good shelter? what do you think? thumbed it up / thx4sharing!
Martina Dejaquiz Either one by itself is pretty small and both as you saw don’t give complete coverage for sleeping under in rain. I learned after this video that both actually come in 3 sizes for the soldier according to their height. Unfortunately, I have the smallest they make (170x170 cm). But I still use one or the other one for shelter on day hikes for those quick Florida showers. You can see the Russian one on my first two Boy Scout mess kit videos and the East German one on my Hungarian mess kit video. In the videos I have the tarp pitched pretty high but when a shower came up I would just lower the front and sit back in the shelter. There are better alternatives out there but they don’t match the cool factor of these surplus items. Thanks for watching another one and for your comment!
florida... very interesting place and i've never been there. sticks-out like a sore thumb way into the gulf. way out there. went to Cozumel once. it rained off/on whole time i was there. the locals said it does that all of the time there. guess florida's like that too. gets me how they protect gators and crocs. i ever see any around here take a guess what will happen to them because i will eliminate them no matter what. monsters that will eat people. yet the law protects them. i don't see it. thx john!
John Sherwood yes nate the sizes are the same as the Polish lavvu the way to tell with the lavvu is the grommets one is small two is medium and three grommets are the large but when you order the lavvu you must tell the supplier to give you two matched of the same size because if not you can guarantee that they will send two different sized ones. Take care Liam 😉
Thank you for the info. I just received my lavvu and it is the medium with two grommet. Luckily they sent me a matching set with the poles and stakes without me asking. Thanks for your comment!

Very cool shelter idea, love the canvas shelter halfs great for enjoying a nice close campfire.

Thanks for the tip! The East German one came with a nice coat on it but I could use some on my plash palatka. Thanks for watching!

Good news!
I want to get a couple NVA ponchos before they all disappear.
Thanks for sharing.
Yeah! They will all be gone soon in bulk. Then you have to pay way too much for them here and there on ebay. Thanks for watching!
If you have access to ebay germany, you can still find them in good shape

Thanks for the info on putting three together. I would like to try that sometime. Do you think I could do this with two NVA and one Russian shelter?
John Sherwood I see no reason why not now that I see they line up much the same.
Iwas wondering if you could ever combine those.Good vid.

you can make a triangular teepee, if you have three of them
How would you do that?
@@instantsiv I use it as triangular tent. You can tie them together.
I had not thought about putting the two together but it makes sense since Russia controlled East Berlin until the 1990s.
All of the warsaw pact shelter halves/ ponchos fit together. The only thing commies were good at was military logistics.
In the rain whatever touches the canvas leaks where its touched .

Thank you very much for watching my video and for subbing! Have a great day!
My nva Tarp is 1 ,85 by 1 ,85 . Did not know they fit on a Russian one hehe nice !!
I was surprised too. It makes both tarps more useful.

the Russian and East German tarps come in 3 sizes for different heights I've been after 185cm one as the 170cm one is too small for me

The Eastgerman poncho tent weight circa 1.75 kg. I use 3 of them to build a pyramid tent - thats ca. 5.3 kg.

Try three !
