- Here I explain (with clips) what I love about Alexander Hall's 1941 classic Comedy, Here Comes Mr. Jordan! Based on the play Heaven Can Wait, the film stars Robert Montgomery and Claude Rains.
Very insightful post!
The wonderful yet under appreciated 1943 George Stevens comedy, “The More The Merrier,” with Joel McCrea, Jean Arthur, and Charles Coburn.
Great review of this classic movie.
Thanks Joshua. I agree with all you say about this wonderful film. The seamless blending of fantasy, romance, comedy and melodrama into one fabulous little movie is very impressive. I think Robert Motgomery had a great screen presence and James Gleason and Edward Everett Horton are, as you say, wonderful character actors. Cannot wait to have a look at "A Matter of Life and Death" Thanks again.
You've managed to touch base on the titles that have made my all time favorites. I noticed that you have yet to review the 1930's Busby Berkeley musicals or another favorite "I'll Never Forget You" (1951), the remake of the 1933 Leslie Howard movie "Berkeley Square". Then there's the Leslie Howard movie "Pygmalion" (1939), the non-musical version of "My Fair Lady" (1964).
A couple of great old movies, both tear jerkers, are The Yearling with Gregory Peck, and Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracy. On the brighter side is The Quiet Man with John Wayne. For classic science fiction, I recommend The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Great choices! Thanks for the recommendations!
MGM"S Camille with Greta Garbo, Robert Taylor and a host of fabulous character Actors.
Great review! It was really interesting to hear all the strange sequels that came out of this - who came with the idea of adding greek mythology to the script? My favorite classic is "Inherit the Wind" (1960), by Stanley Kramer. I've watched so many times that sometimes I start to sing the threatening songs of the town out of nowhere.
Inherit the Wind is a great one! I did a little more looking on Down to Earth and though I couldn't find who specifically made the decision to turn it into a sequel to this film, I did find out the story was loosley inspired by the broadway show, One Touch of Venus which also brings greek Mythology into modern times.
When you mentioned a favorite classic movie, what came to mind is "It's a Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.
Guns of Navarone
After watching "Here Comes Mr. Jordan", you need to watch " Guy Named Joe", supposedly one of Spielberg's favorite movies. He remade it as "Always", but as great as Spielberg is, his version isn't as good as the original.
Great recommendation!
