Old question but there you go : it's a classic technique to dampen the strings and manage sustain, used a lot in the studio in 60's music and beyond. Leaves more space in the mix, focusing more on the initial thump and sounding somewhat closer to an acoustic upright bass. Early Fender Jazz Basses even had dedicated dampeners fitted under each string which then would be hidden by the stylish rear pickup cover, but most players ended up uninstalling them... and ditching the covers as well to widen the playing area.
The make up artist on the Marc show did a terrible job - Marc looks so white and pale and washed up when other footage from this time showed him looking quite healthy. I used to dread this programme coming on as my siblings would want to see it (for The Jam, Eddie and the Hot Rods - New Wave bands etc). Lots of miming, crap dancing girls and graphics, rehashes of old songs. It was so sad and then he died - tragic.
Herbie Flowers was a fine bass player. He was responsible for the iconic bassline on Take a walk on the wild side. The trouble here is that no one, including Marc, seems to give a shit.
Don't listen to it then. Doesn't make sence that you come on here to shit on Marc and his music all the time. I see you everywhere on Marc's videos. Give it a rest 🙄
