@@KarmicSalt I’ve often wondered if it was on purpose. He was supposed to get back together with his wife June who he never divorced. Makes you wonder IMO
Generation X owes a great deal of love and respect to Bolan and T-rex; they were the UK equivalent to SoCal’s Montrose in the ‘70s. It’s not that either of them were globally huge, but they were so influential that pretty much every rock band in the ‘80s claimed them.
I thought there should have been at least a mention of June Child, Marc's wife. He almost certainly wouldn't have gotten as far as he did without her. I often question the influence Gloria had on his life and career. And I'm not the only Trex fan who just can't really stomach her absolutely screeching over his vocals in some of those later recordings. June helped Marc shine, where Gloria was trying to outshine him, which was just not possible. Not to mention it was Gloria's brother that introduced Marc to cocaine. I think he was lost without June and made some really bad decisions in her absence. I also think he'd definitely still be alive If he hadn't started up an affair with Gloria.
@@KarmicSalt Yeah, I agree. I don't even understand how "fans" of Marc can be supportive let alone defensive about her. She literally fled the country as soon as she was out of the hospital and never faced any charges for vehicular manslaughter as she SHOULD have.
You absolutely nailed it , Natalie. Between the age of 12-15 T.Rex was my life, I ate, slept and breathed Marc Bolan , he completely dominated this shy boy's teenage years. I saw T.Rex live in February `73 in my hometown of Nuremberg, Germany, my first concert ever. I was 13 , now I'm 63, but whenever I hear a T.Rex tune (doesn`t happen too often anymore) I'm immediately transported back to those early years (something only music and smells can do). Marc`s light shone bright but short. TANX was his farewell album to his fans, what came after that was unbelievable crap and had nothing to do with T.Rex anymore (no wonder Tony Visconti left). His break-up with June was the turning point and Gloria Jones his downfall.
Once upon a time there was an electric guitar nailed to the Bolan tree. The legend says that that guitar used to belong to Mark Bolan and I knew the guy who stole and kept in his living room. The guitar seems some small scale rushed DIY guitar, painted by brush. It had written on it "who steals this guitar dies".
It’s also a shame that Bolan was marketed toward adolescent girls, and is now remembered as a “teenybopper” act. Because he was without question very musically talented and creative. And had he not perished: I think he would’ve kept making his brand of music into the 1980s, and possibly would’ve branched into movies like Bowie did.
Bolan could not follow up on his success in the US following the Electric warrior album…. The Glam scene quickly became crowded, and Bolan fell out of favor. Bowie survived because of better marketing and catchy tunes!

Marc used to rent out his Rolls Royce to other bands for photo shoots etc . and on the night he died it wasn"t returned on time ,so he went home in the Mini and by all accounts was driven everywhere fast by his girlfriend usually without seat belts ?. A accident waiting to happen in the middle of the night on a bad road .
Back then, seat belts weren't obligatory. In fact, at the time, i was driving an old mini which didn't even have seat-belts fitted. Even up til recently, if you owned a car made before a certain date that didn't have belts, you were not obliged to fit them. I know, as I bought an old 60's Merc about 18 yrs ago from USA, and when i took it for a pre-test, i was waiting for the mech to tell me that it would need seat belts, but he said that they weren't required. That law may have been changed now.
Marc Bolan influenced more people than everyone realizes...I mean where do you think Slash got his top hat look from..He stole it from Marc and the cover of The Slider.
I had read an account years ago that Marc was long-convinced he was going to die in a car accident. The story said it was one of the reasons Gloria had been driving - because he never learned to drive. Several of his songs, though, glamorize (and sexualize) cars. RIP, man, and thank you for the groovy tunes.
I've not listened to T-Rex a lot but, I do know several of their songs and that many...if not the majority... of the bands I loved so as a teen in the 80s took their cues and styling from T-Rex. 🤘🏼💙
I know a bit more than you, unless you didn't want to mention it, before his death he was talking with his good friend the genius Robert Calvert, also a poet in hawkwind about doing something called "Earth ritual" no doubt inspired by Calverts first "Space Riual" with Hawkwind. Calvert talks about it on an interview called "Ramblings at dawn"
From a historical perspective, Bolan did well to die young. Judging by his double-chin at age 29, he would have eventually become, physically, a cookie-monster representation of Piers Morgan. But from a musical perspective, he'd lost it by Tanx in '73 - probably due to overuse of drugs. Not to denigrate his contribution to rock history, I am a huge fan. But his death wasn't "tragic." It was instantaneous and he no longer cares what happens to his image. But his image is and always will be - eternally youthful and talented. Good for him, I still love his classics and listen to them regularly.
I realise and understand the reluctance due to licensing and copyright issues, but this video would have been elevated with Bolan’s actual music and some live performance recordings. Still, good and interesting though.
In 1972 me and my mates on a Friday Night would go to the Hammersmith Palais. They teased me about Mt attire. I bought a satin jacket a la Marc Bolan. And got the 👍

I was going to the gymnasium in the morning when I saw in the window near squere 5 well. I buy a newspaper and sit on the ancient Roman ruins (Zadar-Croatia.then Yugoslavia) and read. I am cry like baby. Missed for 3 hours and went to school crying
The man was a legend! So glad they put him in the rock hall of fame
The T Rex film with Ringo is a good watch.
Really ? Axel stole a lot from Grand Funk too.
I am 60 and I loved Marc.
R.I.P Marc Bolan
Interesting and informative. Thanks.
Very interesting R N R TS! Thank you.
Marc was the cool uncle of punk rock
I had read an account years ago that Marc was long-convinced he was going to die in a car accident. The story said it was one of the reasons Gloria had been driving - because he never learned to drive. Several of his songs, though, glamorize (and sexualize) cars.
RIP, man, and thank you for the groovy tunes.
Loved bolan his music was and still is amazing 👏
She killed him no doubt
I've not listened to T-Rex a lot but, I do know several of their songs and that many...if not the majority... of the bands I loved so as a teen in the 80s took their cues and styling from T-Rex. 🤘🏼💙
Love t-rex and marc bolan still listen to the slider my all time fav album miss you marc wish you were still with us
With lyrics like "Automatic Shoes " that have intrigued me all my life 😊❤
I know a bit more than you, unless you didn't want to mention it, before his death he was talking with his good friend the genius Robert Calvert, also a poet in hawkwind about doing something called "Earth ritual" no doubt inspired by Calverts first "Space Riual" with Hawkwind. Calvert talks about it on an interview called "Ramblings at dawn"
So 😢😢😢,he had such a bright 🌄🌄 future.Enjoyed hearing his son talking about his father,BTW, he speaks English fluently.
I was brought up with this awesome music ❤
I was devastated when Marc Bolan died 😱
I Love His Music...Tragic that he left us too soon. Only the Good Die Young, they say.
no, his wife was drink driving and killed him.
I LOOOVE your channel. Ty my friend.
Television Man is crazy, saying we're juvenile delinquent wrecks...
4:48 Their songs placed "respectably" at #1 and #2....
Yeah, that's pretty respectable I'd say.
Sad....bit crazy...liked their music...had his own style...quite handsome...have his LP...very hippy music..
Thank you ❤
Takes me bk to my youth fantastic artist rip
From a historical perspective, Bolan did well to die young. Judging by his double-chin at age 29, he would have eventually become, physically, a cookie-monster representation of Piers Morgan. But from a musical perspective, he'd lost it by Tanx in '73 - probably due to overuse of drugs. Not to denigrate his contribution to rock history, I am a huge fan. But his death wasn't "tragic." It was instantaneous and he no longer cares what happens to his image. But his image is and always will be - eternally youthful and talented. Good for him, I still love his classics and listen to them regularly.
08:04 just for reference, no that is not the real pub in Mayfair. This is West Ealing.
T ReX Electric Warrior stands as a High Watermark and transcends the “Glam” label. It’s Iconic!
Can you cover Donovan? Soooo many great songs and I really feel like he's underrated
Tie a purple mini round the old oak tree! I remember someone singing that back in the 80's and i never knew what it meant, till recently!
Gloria was drink driving. There is no way around it.
Again, where’s your proof? You were there then?……
Exactly.
LOVE YOU MARC
I realise and understand the reluctance due to licensing and copyright issues, but this video would have been elevated with Bolan’s actual music and some live performance recordings. Still, good and interesting though.
Rip to him
In 1972 me and my mates on a Friday Night would go to the Hammersmith Palais. They teased me about Mt attire. I bought a satin jacket a la Marc Bolan. And got the 👍
I bet you did 👌
I'm 52 this track my birthyear, this GORGEOUS Marc Bolan is my musician hero from the start our dutch radio Stations played it a lot on and on.
i was aware of this song
when i was 3. Just 2 years
before his tragic death.
Much later i saw it back and thought, "I've always looked at him as beautiful. I love masculine femmine men! Not to much testosterone. He was that type. Kind, talented, intelligent his son
is also musician. So sad
he couldn't enjoy his child. Marc knew he wouldn't grow old, sadly he was right. Marc is my 4ever loved Musician ever lived!. ❤🎼🎙🎸
keep a little Marc in your heart❣❣❣
Marc Bolan's passing was sad. It would have been more professional for him to divorce his wife before having an affair.
....vtedy som zboznoval....Jeepster....R.I.P. Marc
