  • I used to have quite a big Oncidium collection that I lost... again.. but this time due to a bad infestation of thrips and a very busy time in my life. But here are still a few I have, I guess the strongest ones :)

    👀 you having to resort to keeping some of your Oncidiums in a closed cabinet to keep the pests at bay reminds me of part of why I 💚 phalaenopsis hybrids so much🤗...They're usually low maintenance & their leaves don't seem to hide pests as easily.They're probably 1 of the least fussy plants I've ever had here in the Midwestern 🇺🇸.I've always liked phals but your channel is what really ignited my passion for them years ago because I learned how to take good care of them & I 👀 just how beautiful they really are when they're actually well cared for.Hats off to you for keeping at it with Oncidiums though...If there's 1 word I'd use to describe you it'd have to be that you're PERSEVERANT because you keep on trying even when things don't work out so well until you find a way to do things better both with plants & also with your life in general based on the things you've mentioned about having to deal with in some of your videos👍🏻.Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge about orchids & a little slice of your life with the rest of us...Keeping orchids really is a wonderful positive lifelong hobby🙂🍃.

    Hi Danny, I very quickly saved my phalenopsis from trips thanks to the "bleach method". And also an oncidium with whiteflies. I change or disinfect the substrate (oven/microwave). The plant spends 10-15min completely immersed in a bleach solution (1/10) well brushed and cleaned between the leaves with a soft brush. Using D0mest0s is also very effective maybe even more because there is soap in it. Another 10-15min in clean water. Dry the plant well, leaves down, then repot. The important thing is also to disinfect the pot and the location of the orchid or move it while cleaning / disinfecting its usual location. The treatment requires a little time and effort but for me one treatment was enough. Good luck.

    Hello from Estonia! I use vodka for best control.The safest and most effective ,can be sprayed or put on the water. This one orchid could have been saved, he must have had too much water at the store. I would have lifted it out of the pot and removed the rotted roots. There should still be a place where the new bulbs will come from. I would live it to dry for 24 hours(or more) and then put it in a moist substrate.

    My Sotoanum , which has absolutely gorgeous soft pink flowers, and 3 Twinkles are doing well and blooming profusely. I also have 2 sharry baby’s that have just bloomed, however the largest one is getting a few yellowish leaves, I suspect it has a nutrient deficiency. I have not been keeping up with fertilizing this one, since it dried out so fast that I kept watering it in between my usual watering regime and kept forgetting to fertilize. I also have a Brassia type Shelob Tolkien that I am absolutely crazy about. The blooms are amazing and it has given me 2 bloom spikes this year. I have not had any pest issues with them in the past, but you just mentioning thrips is running shivers down my spine. I noticed my Calathea had spider mites last week, which has effected a few other plants. So now I am getting paranoid about pests ravaging my collection. I have been pest free for a number of years but I lost a good deal of orchids and other plants in the past because of them. I even bought myself a microscope to check my plants.

    I've just recently bought a titanium treasure. It has enough pseudo bulbs I think and it looks as though there's a spike on the way but it's still within the leaf. The pseudobulbs were still wrinkly after watering so am a bit nervous and some black spots have started appearing on the leaves. Maybe I need to start collecting rain water. :/ I moved it to the window because one area of leaf looked to be paling in one patch. It's not hugely sunny where I am yet. I'll have to move it downstairs if we have another super hot summer tho. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

    Nice to see them again! One of mine has beautiful blooms now as well, but I am struggling with my Twinkle. I have no idea of what I am doing wrong. The previous time it grew pseudobulbs, the leaves got spots and their ends got brown. But it was not drying out or due to infection. Now the newer pseudobulbs didn't have som many sports but some leaves gor slightly brown and some of the pseudobulbs lost their leaves eventhough they are new. How do I get rid of fungus gnats infestation from my orchids??!!

    • @rustyrefill6449
      @rustyrefill6449 Год назад

      Fungus gnats love fungus! They feed on decomposing plant material. So if you have orchids planted in bark that has started to get soft and mushy, that will attract gnats. They also like to live in regular potting soil used for non-orchid houseplants.
      They are usually only a problem when plants are overwatered to the point that the soil stays so wet that it begins to grow molds and fungus deep inside the pot. The excess moisture and lack of air circulation due to waterlogged conditions create the perfect home for gnats. Wet bags of unused potting soil sitting around also tend to harbor them.
      Allowing the soil to dry out will discourage gnats. Diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the surface of pots does help discourage them as well. Maybe a layer of bark or gravel or something that stays drier on top of a pot will also discourage the gnats from setting up shop in non-orchid houseplants.

    • @deemaxwell4172
      @deemaxwell4172 Год назад +1

      Try getting some carnivorous plants like Nepenthes and Sarracenas (both are pitcher plants) as well as pinguiculas (butterworts). They are easy to keep in sphagnum moss and have sticky parts that attract the fungus gnats. Pinguiculas also create "pups" to the side that can be picked and put into their own pots, and have lovely bright pink or lavender flowers to boot! I find these at the hardware store in their plant section. Don't get Venus fly traps as they are too slow to close on those surprisingly quick gnats.

      @lindad1195 Год назад

      @@rustyrefill6449 Thank you for replying. I guess what really bothers me is I just repotted all my orchids at the end of summer so they shouldn’t have the fungus gnats again! I water by running water through the pots over the sink and let them drain. The bark should dry out quickly.
