I found going into controls and switching to "Modern" helps. Like you can use the left toggle to run around instead of having to use the direction keys which I found awkward AD
The influence of Tomb Raider on me is so deeply ingrained, that to this day in any game that needs a long jump, I still take two steps backwards and run and jump regardless of the game or control scheme haha
When trying to make a running jump from a ledge with modern controls, there’s always a 50/50 chance you’ll be able to successfully grab it, unless you are a pro and calculated the steps prior to jumping. This is where tank controls saves the day. The entire game utilizes the grid system, and starting from that you will need to calculate the number of steps she would take before jumping. And the number of steps you take while running per tile on the floor is different from walking per tile so your jump is also affected. If you click and enter Lara’s Mansion (the one with the picture you saw from the beginning), you will find a gym inside. It is basically the tutorial section. Lara tells you step-by-step everything you need to know about tank controls as precisely as possible. You only need to listen to her. Using tank controls: To make a running jump, walk to the edge and don’t let go until Lara stops walking at the very edge. When she stops, tap once on the backwards button for her to move backwards one tile only. After that, you run and then press jump. This will make her do the running jump to the ledge accurately. To prevent the collision/falling, press the interact button right away to make Lara react instantly by grabbing. Then press up once after you successfully grab the ledge. That’s how it works.
I wouldn't say you need to be a pro, if you play it a couple of hours you reach a point when you do her movements without problems. Unless you are talking abour modern controls, I never used those. I just love my old tank controls.
@@drimms8060My comment is already old. It's been there a month already.😂 Ofc modern controls have become easier right now thanks to the March update. But before that, the issues were apparent with modern controls. Before the patch, the cameras in modern controls were wonky. Full control was not possible then. Another was jump delay. Modern control schemes before the patch applied the same jump delay as the classic control scheme. Therefore, I suggested this solution to help the player make really safe jumps over very faraway ledges. There are apparently those who actually tend to jump too soon without walking to the edge first and making a hop back before making a running jump. And right now, it's not much of a problem now that we have the patch, right? The new patch made the jump delays earlier in the modern controls, hence it became easy. And saying "modern controls are easier, what are you on about" is not always the case for everyone. There are just as many people today who are more comfortable with tank controls than you. Same example applies to people who are used to inverted controls than normal.
A very hot tip is to save the game right before you make a big jump you're not sure you'll make. You can reload and try to make it as many times as you want in about under a second.
Not gonna lie… the jumping mishaps with Lara is enough of a reason to make this a full series on its own… love it!! 😂 Also for the nostalgia and love it these games…. But it’s all about the circus music and falls lol😂

I love this collection. I never did get to play the first or third games so I'm having a blast. The game is intended to be played with tank controls which are awkward at first but once you're used to them you'll never go back. I hope they remaster Tomb Raider 4 at some point because that was my first TR game and I still remember it fondly.
10:22 this is a result of the modern controls obfuscating how the game works. The movement is based on the squares that make up the game. In order to do a running jump forward, you need one square to build up speed if you are starting from a standstill. In the tank controls, you can tap backward to give you the exact amount you need. Unfortunately the modern controls remove some of the functionality of the original game that made platforming fun and more useful, like backflips and sideflips and using a back hop to ensure enough distance for running jumps. I think they may still exist if you have your guns out?
I've almost beaten the entire first game, without healing, and only using Lara's basic pistols with modern controls and I can confirm that the flips and movement are all there, it's just activated differently. In order to do flips, you have to have her guns out. Then just hold the jump button and press the desired direction and she'll flip as long as the jump button remains held and her guns stay out. It's more precise if you use the d-pad, as the joystick gives her a full 360 degree movement that may inadvertently cause her to jump normally in a direction instead of dodge flipping. Also, holding square to walk is ESSENTIAL for not falling off of ledges. You can also hold X and press forward from a standstill to do a basic jump to bridge smaller gaps. Lara can also dive roll by holding the jump and walk buttons simultaneously while pressing forward. The movement in these games is actually incredibly nuanced and unique for their time.
I have beaten it on modern controls, you can do everything still it’s just harder. But the final boss is easy on modern controls you just run in a circle and boom. 😂

It's great to see new people playing these. I grew up playing Tomb Raider and it became one of my favorite series. As much as I love Uncharted and new TR, they're a completely different beast. They're pretty much on rail shooters with easy puzzles and easy platforming. I'm pretty sure you've noticed it by now but these are more puzzle/exploration games. I just adore that sense of loneliness and getting lost exploring places with no hand holding as well as the precision required for platforming. It's a unique experience that hopefully gets recaptured in the new TR but is a pipe dream at this point, they're probably gonna do something that follows modern trends because money.

I freaking love FF7R and the Resident Evil remakes. They respect the source material. But the Tomb Raider franchise has been r***d to death over the years in the same way as Star Wars has... Also, it looks to me like the "modern" controls are not made for this game at all. It's like taking a game of chess, removing all tiles and making the board infinitely large. Wouldn't work. Some things don't need to be changed. Sometimes you need to adapt because this makes the game worse than it is and younger players like you don't even have a clue that they are having a worse time because they choose "Modern". You think that the game has bad controls, but you ain't using the right ones. The original controls are perfect. Take 10 minutes in Laras mansion with original controls and all your jumping problems are solved.
TR 3/Anniversary/Shadow are the best games imo of the three respective continuities. Also, play Lara's Home, its a tutorial that explains most of the mechanics. So awesome watching someone experiencing this for the first time. Great video man! Love these games, but I have not played them since I was a kid. Looking forward to playing the remastered versions. Love that they allow you to switch from classic to remastered, they did a great job on the remastered visuals! I loved the reboot series as well.
i grew up with these games, as an adult now, its reall interesting on seeing how everyone reacts to this. hopefully results in an angelt of darkness proper reboot, that game had so much potential. its released version was basically the pitch version of thegame
I never played the legend tomb raider series but i played these classics when they were new and love them. I also played the reboot survivor series and love those too, rise is probably my fav from the new ones.
Tomb raider 1-2 were a big part of my childhood. I remember doing a hand stand climbing a ledge back in the day. Recommend finding out if you can do that. Did it as lot as a kid lol
This game wasn't designed with modern controls in mind due to how the platform geometry influences Laras Movement and her spacial awareness. So often the modern controls would come across worse than the tank controls. The tank controls also come with their own Laras Home tutorial side quest so you can familarise youself in how to handle the controls better. For my set up I use modern graphics with tank controls. I played Tomb Raider og when I was 10 years old and somehow I've missed the back to basics style of gameplay because it's just her in a puzzle room with some animals and the odd human enemy here n there but ultimately the level design was so much more inventive than some of the stuff we see in Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider
I couldn't play the originals without a guide when I first got my PS1 then I eventually got past both Tomb Raider 1 and 2 then I got stuck and still stuck to this day on Tomb Raider 3 on the piranha part it drove me mad but I still love the classic originals such fun.
The first time I even heard of Tomb Raider and played it, it was a demo disk in a magazine called Mega Score - yes, I am THAT old, when news of video games came through magazines that carried disks with a bunch of demos in them... It is hard to imagine in this day and age... ANYways, demo was actually the start of the second level: City of Vilacabamba; up to the use of the first key, just that room but it had battle, puzzle, platforming and even a small underwater sequence so it really did allow you to experience a little bit of all the game had to offer... You walk through these giant doors, and this is your first time playing a game like this and you don't know the controls, you have no idea what you are doing, and the second you cross that door... 4 wolves jump at you. And you don't know this game, you have no idea what you are doing, you try the buttons, you try to shoot and to jump, but you die... SO, you try again, and you think "maybe I can outrun them" so you run into the central room, right, to try and get away... and a freakin bear comes at you outta nowhere... and you die again... That was the most intense experience I had at 11 years old. Eventually, me and my sister were able to defeat the 4 wolves and explore the rest of the level - avoiding the middle room - and were greeted by more wolves and bats, till we had to face the bear. We saw and there was a whole in the middle and tried jumping into it to avoid the bear and it was water and we probably drowned as you have a very specific timing to locate the lever and turn to get to the hole it opens and if you open the other lever and fail to locate the trapdoor one, you drowning... It was an intense experience, a lot of trail and error. But we got through it at the whole demo level and we must have replayed it a hundred times... When the game came out and we got it, we actually found the first level easy in comparison to the demo. You never fought more than 2/3 wolves at a time and you could cheat by jumping on a high platform where they can't reach you or staying up on the bridges. You have a single bear encounter that sure, first time you play you don't really see the gap and you fall down, and probably die as the bear jumps at you from behind without warning and you are already on edge for falling when you weren't expecting it and are definitely not expecting a bear on top of that. But, next time you may actually try and kill it from the platform before you jump down to explore. You had some time puzzles which were new and the true challenge of this level, and you end it feeling nice... I played every main Tomb Raider game and I do believe a great part of my love for the series comes from that hard challenging demo which was my introduction to the game. Lara is awesome and classic Lara is best Lara. I have the classic games on Steam but it has been hard for me to get reaquainted with the so called Tank Controls and I haven't been able to play it on the PC... When I heard there was a remastered version coming to the PS5, I preordered it on the spot, eager to recapture that feeling of playing Classic Tomb Raider again... Sorry for the long comment, Tomb Raider brings a lot of good memories
square button is essential. If you press ir Lara will walk slowly and you can aproach the edges without falling off. (If Lara Walks she will never fall)
@@thehound55 And to be clear, I wasn't making fun, I thought the idea of that being a feature of a game to have a random picture of her house was funny
This is why i love remasters in general i know it can be a money grab to some but it brings the classic games we played to fresh eyes in a more pleasing way than the blocky graphics we played on originally! Also great to see that he went straight to the exact same spot i used to go to kill rex when i was younger and first played 😂😂
I played these when first came out and this is an amazing transformation of the game, but these games had some very different levels and could be very frustrating in places. I think I will be getting this set and revisit some great times.
Wait, what happened at 33 minutes? I was trying to figure out how to get out of those dastardly caves with the river and waterfall. Trying to figure out where to find the missing gear pieces!
This was my absolute favorite game growing up! I was so excited to revisit “classic” Lara. I couldn’t get a grip on the Modern controls though. At times, it felt so weird and unnatural and loose. Although I prefer the Tank controls, I kinda like how freely Lara moves with the Modern controls, I just gotta get used to it. One thing I don’t like is how Lara stops running when you use the flare shortcut (touchpad+R1 on PS5) as well as the texture of the ladders/walls moving as you climb. overall, this is still a 10/10 for me, I hope you enjoy the rest of the games just as well. Thanks for sharing 🌻
23:11 If you hold the walk button you can walk to the edge of a platform without falling off. She will stop when she gets to the edge. This is helpful if you need to jump somewhere else.
Keep the Tomb Raiders gameplay coming, it's great to see someone play and suffer with the game mechanics the same as me 🤣 I played the originals on PlayStation back in the 90s and number 2 was amazing 👌
I enjoyed the Randy Orton reference……more so because of a surprise wolf attack. Which coincidentally there is a trophy called The Apex Predator. Which is earned for killing a wolf while it and you are in the air 😂
Played the Tomb Raider Trilogy maybe a year ago. I think Tomb Raider 2 is my favorite overall. I also played Uncharted 1, 2 and 3 on my PS3 but Uncharted 3 got a game breaking glitch at some point so I wasn't able to finish the game... I absolutely have to recommend you to play your first playthroughs on tank controls... It changes the experience a lot and improves the pacing and difficulty imo. Maybe play Laras home with tank controls because it includes a movement tutorial.
It's like getting the Crash and Spyro original trilogy with this Glad it came with modern controls. She felt like a camera on 🦵 🦵 and feet on the playstation.
My favorite gaming series of all time, pure childhood nostalgia 🙏 and the huge influence that led to us getting uncharted, hope you enjoy these mate. Take your time with them & you'll have a great time, i would definitely recommend tank controls from experience, modern ones are goofy & don't cater too well to the type of game it is
@@thehound55 yeah man and if you feel like sticking with modern just know there's a disadvantage with back flipping, in modern you have to hold the button that pulls your weapons to jump sideways & back ways, whereas in tank it's just the jump button+dpad, but once you master it combat is way more fun because you can pull off all kinds of rolls and backflips and get satisfying kills without damage. Also Try Laras home(the picture in the menu) it's a tutorial stage for controls & in TR2 and 3 it has some really cool things in it to explore
the original came out when i was negative 2 and it was one of the first games i remember playing on the ps1, i was lucky my dad was an avid gamer because i was able to play a whole generation of games most people my age missed due to being too young. if youre playing this for the first time i suggest sticking with the original control scheme and checking out laras home from the main menu for a basic movement tutorial
I saw that you were super frustrated with the fact that when you're close to a climbable wall and you would try to jump, grab the ledge and fail. A simpler way is to just face the wall you wanna climb and press R2 / shooting button, Lara will automatically jump and grab the ledge!
For sure do a full series while these remasters are hot. Also personal request: rip an uncharted 2 play through on crushing difficulty. Would love to see the rage
Oh my God, these are my favorite games of all time... The 4th one is my favorite, but it wasn't remastered 😢😢😢... At the age of 14 years, it took me 6 months to finish it 😢😢😢... Please, please continue suffering LOL... because it is a different point of view... The game gets harder and harder to finish it. 😅
the controls are just the way i remembered them...luckily the PC version does save states...i have managed tricky controller glitching tricks in games easier than just doing a normal jump in this game..lol
TR2 is my #1 favorite of all time in the franchise. Like all the classic games that came along with it, the difficulty spike increases as you progress per level. If you completed TR2 with 3 and 4, you'll probably witness some of the most beautiful level designs accompanied with complex platforming. You''ll notice TR1 and TR2 change colors from dull to vibrant in later stages that you might want to stop for a moment and take pictures. I really had good memories with those. Don't forget the cutscenes, you'll enjoy them a lot. Horror aspects of TR1-3 are 10x better than the ones you see from the reboots. Not gonna lie, there was one jumpscare each in TR2 and TR3 that shocked me for real I almost broke my headphones, but I enjoyed them a lot :>. My biggest favorite horror levels are from TR1 (name of level starts with letters "At"), and TR2 (when you see this level has too much green colors around, get ready to feel the creepiness.) The soundtrack is goat. Nathan McCree composed majority of it, and it is beautiful. All while maintaining the mood and atmosphere of each level depending on the theme, and he nailed them all.
Using tank controls, walk to the very edge until she won't go any further. Tap backwards once, and she'll hop back once. Press forward, then jump. Hold R2 while she's in the air. :)
tank controls, enjoy the real game... and you will have a best way to play... some areas needs the side jumps, and back jump... and do the mansion tutorial... the modern controls are not good for jumps (and jumps are realy necessary in this game)... tomb raider uses momentum, so you wont jump the same time you press a button... so do some.training and cpunt her steps to be easy to remember.
You were born the year Tomb raider 1 was released. So you would only have been too young to understand how to play the game even if you played a couple of years later
I recommend going to Lara's home. It's a tutorial that explains how the controls work.

Thanks man, Appreciate that! Hope you enjoy it :D
This is hilarious! Would definitely love a series of this.
More coming today :)
i grew up with these games, as an adult now, its reall interesting on seeing how everyone reacts to this. hopefully results in an angelt of darkness proper reboot, that game had so much potential. its released version was basically the pitch version of thegame
nice to see someone playing it without knowing what it's gonna like to be.
This Game brings back a lot of memories as a kid, looks beautiful! 🤗
Hell yeah
The way you solved that 3rd level in such a short time was so nice... It took me like two days When I was a kid 😅
I never played the legend tomb raider series but i played these classics when they were new and love them. I also played the reboot survivor series and love those too, rise is probably my fav from the new ones.
The bear standing up is hilarious 😂😂
Ahhh someone playing for the first time!! Hope you continue
Just recorded more :)
Watching this is bringing back memories I didn’t know I had. Love it!
I like the old ones - but Shadow is such a clean game. I just love it.
Shadow is great
I couldn't play the originals without a guide when I first got my PS1 then I eventually got past both Tomb Raider 1 and 2 then I got stuck and still stuck to this day on Tomb Raider 3 on the piranha part it drove me mad but I still love the classic originals such fun.
Haha yeah seems like they're tough for sure
Haha nah that’s awesome to hear. Love hearing people’s experiences with it
I would suggest you try Laura’s home which gives you a walkthrough of the controls and how they work.
square button is essential. If you press ir Lara will walk slowly and you can aproach the edges without falling off. (If Lara Walks she will never fall)
Yeah learned this in part 2 lol
lol because you have to select the photo twice, he thought it was just a random, tiny, useless photo of her house 😂
Sadly, it is the tutorial section🥲. It would help a lot
yeah I’m gonna do that at the start of Part 2 lmfao
@@thehound55 And to be clear, I wasn't making fun, I thought the idea of that being a feature of a game to have a random picture of her house was funny
TOMB RAIDER is the BEST franchise in adventure genre ever❤
Totally hoping you continue this into a whole series!
I will
This is why i love remasters in general i know it can be a money grab to some but it brings the classic games we played to fresh eyes in a more pleasing way than the blocky graphics we played on originally!
Also great to see that he went straight to the exact same spot i used to go to kill rex when i was younger and first played 😂😂
Haha it seems the only reasonable spot
I played these when first came out and this is an amazing transformation of the game, but these games had some very different levels and could be very frustrating in places.
I think I will be getting this set and revisit some great times.
I came for the Tomb Raider gameplay but after finding out UNCHARTED is your favourite series of all time? I'm in subscribed! 🎉
🤝
I'm excited to see some more of tomb raider Apex
secrets in the game are basicaly itens, med kits, ammo, weapons... and the statues.
Thanks for this amazing video I enjoyed playing this when I was a kid and hopefully you make it into a full series and you enjoy it yourself
🙌🏻
Thank you very much sir! Glad you’re enjoying it
Loving your lomb raider playthrough mate
This is my favorite game all time.
23:11 If you hold the walk button you can walk to the edge of a platform without falling off. She will stop when she gets to the edge. This is helpful if you need to jump somewhere else.
Yeah I realised this a bit later in the video, I'm dumb lol
Thanks! Forgot how hard these were without a walkthrough. Been stuck wondering around level 2 for ages looking for the mf key
Glad I could help!
Love watching new players trying out tank controls for the first time. Lol
Keep the Tomb Raiders gameplay coming, it's great to see someone play and suffer with the game mechanics the same as me 🤣 I played the originals on PlayStation back in the 90s and number 2 was amazing 👌
Hell yeah man, thanks
I enjoyed the Randy Orton reference……more so because of a surprise wolf attack. Which coincidentally there is a trophy called The Apex Predator. Which is earned for killing a wolf while it and you are in the air 😂
I need to get that trophy hahaha
Using these modern controls if you walk off a ledge but changed your mind if you quickly press action button Lara will turn around and grab the ledge
Yeah I realise this late in to Part 3 lmfao
This game was not meant for modern controls the tank controls once mastered are the best way to play the game.
This is great! I’ll watch more. Loving the game. Ps you can more easily grab ledges if holding the trigger button.
Thanks mate
It's like getting the Crash and Spyro original trilogy with this
Glad it came with modern controls. She felt like a camera on 🦵 🦵 and feet on the playstation.
My favorite gaming series of all time, pure childhood nostalgia 🙏 and the huge influence that led to us getting uncharted, hope you enjoy these mate. Take your time with them & you'll have a great time, i would definitely recommend tank controls from experience, modern ones are goofy & don't cater too well to the type of game it is
Nice one mate, Will give tank a try at some point
That’s dope man, my dad being in to games is what got me in to games too!
I saw that you were super frustrated with the fact that when you're close to a climbable wall and you would try to jump, grab the ledge and fail. A simpler way is to just face the wall you wanna climb and press R2 / shooting button, Lara will automatically jump and grab the ledge!
Tomb raider legend is my favourite tomb raider game
Gained a new sub for this series :)!
Thanks man :)
Tank Controls are superior.
They should released a physical version of this.
This was absolutely hilarious a full series would be mega
edit: totally meant to comment this on part 2 lol
Yesssir
How did you manage to get the game early ? It say I can’t play it till tomorrow
Playing it back in 96 the buttons came naturally definitely use tank controls for perfect jumps . God I’m old 😂
I used to get anxiety when under water and air running out of air lol
Hahaha OMG There's a Bear!!!! That needs to be on a shirt!
lmao scared the hell out of me
For sure do a full series while these remasters are hot. Also personal request: rip an uncharted 2 play through on crushing difficulty. Would love to see the rage
Lol bro don't know if I could do that to myself
Dude, if you were able to get away with a bog on 8 and a trip on 10 in the same round of the impossible challenge at the pred you can do anything haha
Tomb raider 2 is by far the best TR
Ouff!! Wtf have i missed!!! Love uncharted me too!! Hope this is as well as them 🙏
Modern Controls shold NOT be included in this game. It is meant only for Tank controls.
I played the original on the PS1 that much, that to this day (30 years later) i can still remember where all the pickups are. 😂
Haha that’s insane man, I couldn’t remember what happened last week😂
My biggest favorite horror levels are from TR1 (name of level starts with letters "At"), and TR2 (when you see this level has too much green colors around, get ready to feel the creepiness.)
The soundtrack is goat. Nathan McCree composed majority of it, and it is beautiful. All while maintaining the mood and atmosphere of each level depending on the theme, and he nailed them all.
Haha can’t wait to see some of this man, thank you
Never played the legacy version before. Remastered seems good to go.
Should I go buy?
Or I should just watch the play through?🤔
How did you make the broken bridge jump? I can;t do it, she just bounces off the other side every time
Using tank controls, walk to the very edge until she won't go any further. Tap backwards once, and she'll hop back once. Press forward, then jump. Hold R2 while she's in the air. :)
@@Whimsy3692 Thanks! :) finally made it lol
Are they going to add Tomb Raider chronicles and revelations to this game as well
This was fun to watch haha
Thank you 🙌🏻
Where do you play the bonus content???
The Tomb Raider games are classics but I also recommend trying out Tomb Raider Underworld and the reboot trilogy made by Crystal Dynamics. Great games
Yeah I love the modern ones as I said, Great games!
@@thehound55 nice!
tank controls, enjoy the real game... and you will have a best way to play... some areas needs the side jumps, and back jump... and do the mansion tutorial... the modern controls are not good for jumps (and jumps are realy necessary in this game)... tomb raider uses momentum, so you wont jump the same time you press a button... so do some.training and cpunt her steps to be easy to remember.
Born in 1996 I had tomb raider 2 on the ps1 but never had a memory card so every time I played it I had to restart it 😅
Haha that’s tough damn
You were born the year Tomb raider 1 was released. So you would only have been too young to understand how to play the game even if you played a couple of years later
