Gabriel Traveler: I enjoyed this episode! Corsica belonged to the Republic of Genoa (before Genoa became part of Italy) and in 1768 was ceded to France to pay off debt. I grew up in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico and wanted to add a curios note not many know; thousands of Corsicans families immigrated to Puerto Rico in the early 19th century (1815) and were connected to the coffee industry where they became prosperous. You will find Puerto Ricans on the island with Corsican surnames such as Pietri, Pieraldi, Antongiorgi, Santoni, Fantauzzi, Franceschi, Mattei, Mariani, Fraticelli, Negroni and many others. Thanks for posting this video!

I usually wrote short messages, cause well...not a native in english. Buuut... today i felt the need to say more than thank you... you're such an inspiration, and you're highly appreciated for the example you set. you are a true explorer, you weren't afraid to have a different lifestyle than usual people, you weren't afraid to run out of money, to sleep in parks, to have jobs of all kinds, and to tell us about all of this. Buddhist/vedanta/yoga masters talk about non-attachment, but you are a living example. A man who live the life the way he want :) May you have a long and healthy life full of love and happiness.

Hey Gabriel, Ned from Spain here. First of all, my wife and I love your videos and we realize how much work it takes to not only to travel, but film, edit and upload on such a regular basis as well as staying healthy. One thing about water in most European restaurants is that they bring you bottled rather than tap, one to make a profit but also tap tends to be not so good, maybe a little bad tasting. I would say drink your water before or after but you're cruisin for a bruisin if you pop a bottle of anything out of your bag and put it on the table.

The GR20 hiking route crosses Corsica's mountains for 180km. Often said to be the toughest of Europe's long distance treks. Perhaps you're not equipped for it this trip and not the ideal time of year but definitely something you'd probably be into some time. It's high on my list anyway so looking forward to learning more about Corsica through your travels there. ✌

These are the types of videos I enjoy the most. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all of your videos, but the ones where you explore a small town or island, in great sunny weather, walking around the quaint local streets and passages, never knowing what's around the corner, are the best. The scenery is amazing, I can almost smell the fresh ocean air. The big cities are too much alike, too busy and crowded, and they all kind of blend together after a while. Looking forward to all the future videos.

Corsica is beautiful, but a total nightmare in the summer, very touristy and crowded, you chose the right season Gabriel.. Fun fact: in the off season, when you walk in these desert and narrow streets of Calvi, you really often pass by groups of muscular and very blond guys, or asian dudes, enjoying some ice creams or sitting in cafés writing postcards to their families... faces and situations that are very random in this part of france... well they are brave "Légionnaires" from the famous French Foreign Legion , they have an airbone regiment near the calvi airport. Often dudes from eastern europe, ex soviet countries, russians, serbs etc.. who look for better life/wages enrolling in the FFL and risking their life for france. Part of the castle you passed by in the begginning houses the very cool canteen of the officers of the FFL , and if you go hike in the mountains around Calvi chances are that you will also often come across a lot of them always running and training in the mountains, or see them skydiving in the sky of the bay of Calvi.

Don't bring your own bottle of water to a restaurant and ask for a cup... That's highly unusual, at least in most places I've been in Europe. Either ask for tap water or if you are in a region where its not advised to drink it, just don't order it or something.
The reason of course why its normal in the US to hand out free water is because the customers will regard this as good service and will show that in the tipping. The EU of course does not have much of a tipping culture, service is already included in the price and staff will earn a living wage regardless of tips. What I usually do is leave a small tip to round it off. So when the bill is like 19 bucks I'll leave a 20 and mention they can keep the change. Never had a waiter who was unhappy with this.
I do think it's kinda weird they gave Gabe a whole bottle without asking first since he's just by himself. Water can be costly in some cases, there are some more famous brands like San Pellegrino or Aqua Panna that are regarded as good quality so be prepared to pay for that. There are some weird things that restaurants sometimes do. They might add a cover charge for one or two euro's per person, this has to be cleary advertised though by law. An older "trick" is to put a basket of bread on your table without you asking for it, check if you eat some of it and then charge for it. Usually not more than a couple of euros but its still kind of annoying.
This restaurant in particular seemed a bit overpriced anyway. 6 euro for a glass of wine is very expensive in the Mediterranian region. You should only pay that much if it's a wine of particular good quality you'd like to try, simply because the place is upmarket or a great touristy location and its just convenient (which seems to have been the case here).

It's a beautiful area. One of the more peculiar things I recall from travels was being on the Riviera about 20 years back with a group of friends, mostly in Cannes and the surrounding area. We'd gone to a small bar one evening (I think in Villefranche) and after leaving I'm looking at the receipt given after paying - one of those standard pieces of thermal paper you get everywhere - and printed on the bottom (much like you see "Thank you for shopping at...") was "Filthy Corsicans". It was so weird - I kept the receipt, and if we'd been closer to the bar when I first noticed this I would have gone back to ask about it. Regional rivalry perhaps, or the owners of the bar simply had a grudge.

Beautiful place, but wouldn't really enjoy it with it being so empty. I don't like it too crowded but hardly any people isn't great either.
