There are no ‘free’ sets. The cost is built into the price of the other sets Lego released this year. Besides, as the video points out, the GWP would likely face fewer complaints if Lego had committed to releasing a new line of Castle sets. The fact that it hasn’t done this means the future of Castle remains uncertain. This causes anxiety in fans, who then load all our hopes/expectations onto a few random new sets which do appear, including GWPs. Often these hopes are unfair, but are born of anxiety for the future. E.g. Rather then be joyful about the return of the Dragon Masters or Majisto, we freak out because of the fear that we might never get a more fully realised reboot version. Because, strictly speaking there is no guarantee that we will.
I think we are all complaining because they refuse to make proper castle sets. Nobody would give 2 cents if they made 1 bad GWP while making 10 good (and cheap) sets each year for castle remakes. Regardless, nothing is free here. You have to buy for X amount. I got another blacksmith (I already had some, didn't really need more, but it's something I could handle having more of) but the rest of the sets I got up to the 250 point were sets I wasn't exactly in a hurry to get and I could have waited for a discount. This was not a free set, and even if it was, it doesn't change the fact that it's mediocre - not bad, it's not THAT bad, but we were expecting quite a lot out of this, us castle fans that don't really get a lot of sets. Buying sets that you don't really like to moc up castles out of them can only get you so far.
Those other Majisto's looked fire🔥 how cool would it be to get a whole line of wizards/ fantasy sets. Like a spell wizard with a library, a Druid with a forest scene and some new animals or a green house w/ plants, a potion shop, an enchanted black smith with magical vibrant colors for weapon molds, and a necromancer or monster conjuring wizard for the bad guys there could be a temple with runes to study or an observatory with star charts all along side updated knights. But the knights are really the side characters for the first wave with their own sets and castles coming in wave 2 and 3
Yeah, my problem isn't the build itself, I find it cool that it's so faithful to the original. My main problem is the very disappointing minifigures and the ludicrous price threshold.
It’s weird because Lego has proven they can do good remix retro stuff, especially really recently with the new basil leak. Edit: I think it might be bad so that there is less FOMO. I bet Lego would’ve gone above and beyond for a real set.
Great points! I went out of my way to buy to get this. Haven't built it yet but I share a lot of the same criticisms particularly around the minifigures. I really liked your community's versions Majisto! Really cool interpretations! Love it!
This set just wasn't one they could update easily the original was in itself hard to update being an out of scale house. Something like the dragon transport or the dragon catapult could have been have been updated far more easily and in a far better fashion.
They could easily do it. But they would need to bring certain parts back for use. And they don't seem to plan to do that. If they had any plans to bring dragonmasters any time soon they could have. Sadly they won't. It seems more likely now that they bring the Fright Knights. Seeing they bring Basil as a CMF.
Love all those custom Majysto’s!, I think the best part about the set was the new trees, those work extremely well and might be something I implement into my own castle mocs!. The interior is bland like the original, but I feel like the set really should’ve done something more interesting with the limited space, the set is definitely a downgrade which I hate to say, but the lion legs do make the Dragon master look better!, great video man have a good day!!!:))
I think the og set had and wacky structure that just isn't worth trying to modernize. Other sets like the 6075 Wolfpack Tower, 6067 Guarded Inn or even 6041 Armor Shop would have been ideal for an upgrade. I would prefer getting the crossed axes torso with the conical helmet rather than getting dragon masters.
Hey bro I love the video and I just want to say just a few days ago I got into Lego Castle I've been a huge pirate fan but now I'm starting to look into Castle and your channel has been very helpful so thank you
After the joy that was the updated blacktron gwp minifigure, and with the updated lion and falcon knights toshowwhatispossible, the dragon master is a baffling mistep. The new torso is mostly a solid modernization, but the legs and accessories are actively detrimental. Majisto's original torso makes for a great medieval sailor or logistics train laborer, but the new one lacks even basic details. It's especially shocking that the same blank torso appeared in the massive lion knight castle.
1:56 Just pause the video here, take a look at these two figures side by side. Now tell me which one looks better. One sidenote: The dragon wings on the original knight are backwards.
I like the 1993 set more because the guard minifig is well detailed for example the helmet on it. Now it just looks like they got lazy and for its prize not worth it and btw nice vid
imo another part of the problem is that the Forestmen's Hideout and Lion Knights' Castle set the bar so high, and then they picked a set to remake that honestly isn't well-suited for a modernized version. While the execution could've been better, I think this was doomed from the start to not live up to expectations. I was one of the people who complained about the Blacktron GWP, but if LEGO read that and decided that the problem was the use of modernized building techniques, they evidently didn't read closely enough! I, and most other people I saw complain about the Blacktron GWP, only really took issue with the fact that the silhouette didn't match the original.
New subscriber! I'm enjoying your videos as I'm working on my own huge castle MOC. One point of technical feedback - can you find a way to keep your camera more stable? The picture quality and editing are great, and as I also have edited videos, I know that videos are a lot of work to create. Keeping the image stable will really help improve the viewing experience. Cheers from Canada.
I'm glad to have you aboard! As for the camera movement/stability you are 100% right and i think in my recent battle pack video i have improved alot. Moving forward it should keep getting better as im more mindful of the issue.
Ended up getting this set because of the $35 blacksmith coupon (plus some pick a bricks I've been sitting on); I might build it once but I don't think I'll keep it together, not as is, maybe I'll upgrade it into some kinda alchemists shop. Also gotta upgrade that knight as well though, thinking a dragonhelm+plumes, fancy axe, and two-tone legs to match that classic quartered/halved aesthetic.
Do you have to be a Lego Insider for this set? Tried to buy it yesterday (with Lion Knights Castle) and never showed up in my cart. Edit: lol just learned insiders replaced VIP program.
I totally agree with you on everything. I also got the Viking village as well as the blacksmith in order to get this not so great castle set. The characters are definitely the most dull part of it.
Also a thing that bothered me . Glow in the Dark wand ; we have a fantastic glow in the dark today , and they didn't even put the effort to cast a new gitd and , even so that was a main highlight for the old castle theme .
I’m still tempted to get this for less than $40, just because I still have several dragon master sets from my childhood, including the castle and majisto’s tower, but I never had the original majisto’s workshop and this looks like a it would mix in well with my vintage sets.
still hoping for the upgrade to the eagle I think it was knights. I think it would be amazing if they found gunpowder in the southern continent that allowed them to advance to things such as the 1500's pike and shot strategies, obviously don't make them op but make it like the 1500's where they still wear full armor and have calvary in full armor but the calvary fire pistols and blunderbusses while the fully armed infantry go in pike squares with musketeers retreating into the square when in need of protection.
This has nothing to do with the set but in your castle lore the 2013 lion knights and really any other lions could be special forces or lower or higher ranks than the regular lion knights. Idk I think that would be cool and nice video
I ended up picking up mind from eBay for £20. At that, i think its worth it but I certainly think there was room for improvement on the figures. Lion Knight legs or the Blue/Red dual molded Spider-Man legs for the Lion Knight and perhaps the BAMF parts for Majisto or even just a updated version of his older print.
I like the set. It's similar to the original in it's design. Majisto himself is a little bit of a disappointment, they should've made him more like the original version. The Dragon Knight should've used the orignal helmet but the torso design is fantastic. It is a bit unfair to criticize this set so heavily because it is no more detailed than the original Dragon Knights sets.
after waiting nearly a year, and after the success of the forestman's hideout, and after the glory that is the El Dorado FOrtress....TLG fell slat on this one.
I think the set looks fine overall. The only issue I have is with the minifigures. But like you say, it is pretty unreasonable to think LEGO would bring back any of the older molds (helmet, halberd, plumes, etc.) just for a limited time GWP set. That is where I see the major complaints. Sure they could have given a printed shield, but those go for just about $5 new on BrickLink, so go grab one from there! If you're spending $250 on LEGO to get this set, you probably have some more money to spend 😉But honestly, I wish LEGO would just stop putting these full fleshed sets as GWPs, and just stick to poly bags or parts packs as GWPs. This could have been a normal $30-$40 set sold as retail, and then maybe they would have devoted more budget to making the desired parts that are currently lacking. Sorry for the long comments, I have a lot of thoughts on this.
I love the long comments don't stress it :) I think you're on the money when it comes to GWPs. The VIP/Insiders bags are the perfect way to do them imo. Having them be seasonal/themed was also a really great move for them. It is slightly disappointing to me that it seems like they are moving towards making more and more full sets as GWPs. It feels like we have gotten a record amount in just the past 3-4 months.
I'm personally not a big fan of the whole GWP sets because they put pressure on the consumers to buy them while they are available for ridiculous price threshold (FOMO). I see that that is exactly Lego's strategy in this field. I personally think that this problem may be solved if many RUclipsrs who are independent from Lego company (which is another big problem, as the company is pushing it's agenda through puppet-like influencers) would boycott these sets and publicly state their boycotting over this type of nonsense. The set even as a disappointment would be much better received if it had normal year-year and a half runtime on shelves with the price between 30 and 40 USD. I'm not trying to frame You or other independent creators as the sole problem, as we all are because we get hooked to the FOMO. I'm just suggesting that if for instance, You, Slugger, Jang or anyone else would publicly anounce and encourage boycott of remake GWPs it could leave a mark. For instance as the whole "make 501st battlepack" thing paid off.
You definitely have a point. I debated in the lead up to the release whether or not i should get the set but since i was already going to be buying the viking village during that day for another video i ended up pulling the trigger.
I don't really see the problem to be honest. This is a decent budget remake of an okay original set. Lack of dragon plumes, proper helmet, polearms, and shield are all misses for sure, but a one off GWP was not likely to have any of those. I can't be too upset about this one.
Will the medieval market set next year be the same price as the lion knights castle? I heard it will be £240. I love lego castle and I am relatively new to the theme. I don’t have a giant budget for lego so it’s a shame that not only is it hard to get into the theme because there are so few sets they have for it but also that the sets are £90+ right now. :(
Sadly I missed out on this and the hideout, but am upset I can’t get them from anywhere but eBay. I personally don’t care that there’s not a huge update, the only disappointing part for me are the minifigs.
Oh come on, we should be grateful that dragon master got a torso print and not two stickers. Also, forestmen hideout was good GwP, not great or amazing, it was just solid gift with purchase that still had just slightly a little bit too big of an entry. It's just that ever since a lot of GwPs made that one looks amazing.
A lot of us will get this sad sed, even if we don't like it that much. It's a collector's bane not having one item (even if it's a mediocre item). Regarding the quality of the set, the minifigs are bad (only win is the knight torso, they couldn't even bother making the helmet in black at least - would have loved one of these helmets in black for the falcons). The build itself isn't bad, but it's indeed too similar to the original sets, but however they somehow lost the good parts it had and whatever new pieces they used, they are worst than the original (except the rounded arches and the branches - I like these, however I think they should have had at least 5 - 7 branches around the building, not just the 2.). The biggest miss is using brown. They should have kept the black wood since they seem to be hellbent on using black branches for the trees. Not sure why they thought using brown would be better. They should have just used black pieces for the "door" and the few plates, making contrast with red or gray if they really needed that contrast. The only brown items should have been the chest and ladder, like in the original. A last word on the knight torso, this is meant to be the normal footman / knight guy, not the fancy asymetric one. If I were a betting man, they would most likely release the fancy general in the CMF line if Basil the Vampire lord is anything to go after. This torso, I hope they at least release at some point with proper feet (will try to see if the lion knights work well with it) , so we can mass a nice amount of the footman. And I do hope they release the other footman torso as well. I think this would be a heavy footman as opposed to the other conscript one.
The Dragon Master is the biggest disappointment. Fully agree that printing is super generic. And while I kinda understand why they don’t have the original helmet, but even the color of the prints are duller. The original was bright yellow, but this one comes off as a dim bronze.
If this was in my local retail shop it would pay 20 to 30 euro for it. But it dosnt do enof for gwp at the 250 price tag maybe 120 i mite have but i realy think they should just have releast it into stores i would have bought 3 of them to help with my own black knights city build im very slowly getting old sets for. One day il get around to actualy setting them all up not just buying amd storing
Omg, look at these windows with stickers, what a shame. Can't believe adult people with adult brains saw this and decided it's a good building for mass production.
Bro it just a way to get extra minifigs and a wierd a house a designer really though looked nostalgic and nice while buying the Lego castle it’s just one more reason to buy the castle directly from lego
Big issue, will this even look good as a drop in with the medieval market? My first inclination is no. With the weird door and off scale balcony with stickers. It probably won't look good. Also next to the forestmen hideout it looks weak. They shouldn't have done this set. They could have easily done a cart set of which many iconic ones exist in Lego. Like the wolfpack cart or the farmers cart. Something that does not rely on specialized pieces all that much. This set would look a 100% better with the right armor for the knight a shield and the dragon plumes. I own a few dragon master sets from back in the day. The plumes and helmets are practically mandatory.
@@Goldfyre Same for me. I actually held off buying the Viking village set to get the gwp. And got myself the city cargo train as well. I hope Lego learns from the mistake. What I actually hope is they give us a gwp next year that fits with the market. An updated maidens cart "6023" or the wolfpack renegades "6038" Something that drops in easy with the market set. "6044" the Royal carriage would probably be too much. "6010" supply wagon would be nice. It's small and simple, and very easy to do. "1974","1877" or "1680" would be the easiest. Since they got the Forrestmen prints. And they are smuggler carts. There is even a moc for "1680" which looks really good. The point is that I feel a set that is gwp castle should feel like a addon to the main release. The forest hideout looks so good. And adds a lot to the castle. In my opinion the forestmen are the hidden faction underneath and outside the castle. As for other types of gwp other than a cart and I still feel a cart is the best to add on. Is perhaps something siege and falcon related. But there isn't all that much falcon siege related going around. A remake of "6030" would then be it. But "6011" Knights treasure remade with updated parts would also be nice. Even if it is the simplest set.
I think the dragon masters well be getting a full figure. I also hate that we don’t have new Majisto's prints. I’m not sure if I’ll get it because I customized a Harry Potter castle to be Majisto's castle. Also I don’t think lego did that bad of a job. Majisto's hut is fucked set. They’d have to start from scratch.
To be honest this set just looks weird. Majisto is just bad and your recolour idea would be great since it's so close to the original design. I mean did he ever have no prints? The dragon knight is annoyingly unprinted and the build is a weird scale. Not annoyed I won't be getting it. Very good video as usual though.
@@Goldfyre the less coordinated every color down to the millimeter is on the minifig, the MORE realistic to medieval it is. Watch any movie, knights on the same side had diverse sets of armor and helmets, but all had common identifiers, often times small identifiers. I just felt like your perception is too much that of a clone trooper army builder lol. As if kamino was manufacturing Armor in the Middle Ages, all to exact specifications. Cmon man!
I didn't get it. I was waiting for November but Lego wanted me to spend way too much just to get this and i wasn't going to spend money on sets I didn't want. It;s not a good set anyway.
Me if I do get this gift with purchase I try to just strip it down for parts it's the best way to use it and yeah dissatisfied with this piece of garbage. C'mon lego stop fooling around.
And what if people like Goldfyre putting female knights in their armies ?, I don’t have any problem with it but I’m curious where you’re stance on people putting female knights in their own armies
@@ClassicStudStudios I had to look up Goldfyre... I didn't know who he was and I'm not sure what angle you meant by this. Anyways, lego's and any other toy can be styled in any way the buyer wants. If I want to paint a hotwheel with candy cane stripes, then that is my choice. However, Lego has slowly started to force people into buying lego sets that have woke narratives. Traditionally, knight sets have been male. I don't believe a single set in the 80s or 90s went against this... and if they did, it was rare. But now it is hard to find a male set that does not include a female. This is fine, if the buyer wanted a female in the set, but most boys want boys as their knights, racecar drivers and so forth. So I do have a problem with it because of the forced narrative. It's subtle, but it's there. If on the other hand, someone wants to change a character and make different this or that, then that's up to the person playing with the set after the fact. But calling a spade a spade, knights were traditionally male, so lego seemingly having a quota of male to female knights, is politics injected into toys. Let the kids decide.
@@yourtruereview3621 oh the quota is just for knight sets ( which we rarely get anyway ), when it comes to something like city lego try’s to have a near 50/50 split of male and female figures. You can think what you want about that, but truth is that female figures were just extremely uncommon in the 90s-early-and even the late 2000s. Only now ( again specifically with 3n1, ideas, city, icons ) that lego has been trying to do a 50/50 split. Ninjago, dreamzzz and friends are kinda an exception though, Ninjago and dreamzzz are action themes, and friends while it HAS been adding more male miniDolls, and the builds have surpassed city, the actual Male/female ratio is hardly 50/50
How is it that complaint videos about free gifts are even more petulant than normal sets?
lol

If you're spending $250 on LEGO to get this set, you probably have some more money to spend 😉But honestly, I wish LEGO would just stop putting these full fleshed sets as GWPs, and just stick to poly bags or parts packs as GWPs. This could have been a normal $30-$40 set sold as retail, and then maybe they would have devoted more budget to making the desired parts that are currently lacking. Sorry for the long comments, I have a lot of thoughts on this.
I love the long comments don't stress it :)
I think you're on the money when it comes to GWPs.
I kind of like the simplicity of the blue robes with no print. Makes it look more retro, if anything. (Even if the original did have some printing)
I agree with the video. Also might be time to invest in a tripod or at least use a "warp-stabilize" effect to remove camera shake.
Absolutely
Spot on. Underwhelming set which LEGO cheaped out on.
Thanks man great review
Hi man whats better the big castle ot the blacksmith?
Honestly both are terrific but the blacksmith is retiring first.
@@Goldfyre yea but if i buy the blacksmith i cant but tye castle i can buy only one
Okay, based on other reviews I was sooo scared the dragon knight's torso would be a sticker. pfew...
Haha it's thankfully a print. I actually think the new print looks really solid, the bronze color on the dragon is pretty classy looking.
Yeah im hopeful that some more affordable castle sets will come out sometime soon but we don't have any concrete evidence rn.
Great video!
Yo small world! I saw your living dex videos earlier this year when i was starting my attempt at one.
@@Goldfyre I’m so glad if it helped you at all!
Sadly I missed out on this and the hideout, but am upset I can’t get them from anywhere but eBay. I personally don’t care that there’s not a huge update, the only disappointing part for me are the minifigs.
They are 30 dollars on Amazon.
Was hoping for better quality, a bit disappointing. Hoping the torso comes to pick a brick at least
can u get it until official Black Friday?
The set should remain available until monday the 20th
I'm actually a pretty big fan of the bronze print on the dragon but i could see people disagreeing.
A disapointment but u make it marvelous
I also paid 250 but I already had a list I wanted to buy on Pick a Brick
I also spent money for just this medieval set, not as a bonus, and what a disappointment it is
If this was in my local retail shop it would pay 20 to 30 euro for it.
Yeah i just really want a castle wave
I can't wait to see what the medieval town square looks like in official pics. My most anticipated set of next year
@@Goldfyre Same for me. I actually held off buying the Viking village set to get the gwp. And got myself the city cargo train as well.
I hope Lego learns from the mistake.
What I actually hope is they give us a gwp next year that fits with the market.
An updated maidens cart "6023" or the wolfpack renegades "6038"
Something that drops in easy with the market set.
Its insulting that these minifigures look a lot worse compared to their originals from 30 years ago! Inexcusable
I agree thet could have made majisto have printed torso and skirt also the build feels empty and unfinished
The build really doesn't do it for me at all
Is this a new set?
Yup came out nov 18th as a GWP
I bought a combo of a set and PAB to get it.
Who said you cannot replace the arms? Dude, knights are not clone troopers 🤣
what
@@Goldfyre the less coordinated every color down to the millimeter is on the minifig, the MORE realistic to medieval it is. Watch any movie, knights on the same side had diverse sets of armor and helmets, but all had common identifiers, often times small identifiers. I just felt like your perception is too much that of a clone trooper army builder lol. As if kamino was manufacturing
Armor in the Middle Ages, all to exact specifications. Cmon man!
I didn't get it. I was waiting for November but Lego wanted me to spend way too much just to get this and i wasn't going to spend money on sets I didn't want. It;s not a good set anyway.
Imagine buying like 50 random sets you dont like to get this set just for it to suck 💀 💀 💀
Maybe the real problem could be that your expectations were wrong?
That's absolutely a part of it! There's quite a few things imo that lead to to this set falling short for me and other castle fans.
It’s very disappointing 😢
Booooo!!!! If the dragon knight had proper helmet and dragon plumes then this set would get zero complaints
Well said.
No Majisto print, wrong helmet and no shield - huge disappointment - no purchase 👎
Lame dynomite detonators why lol! 😊😅😂
This is the kind of set that’s made by someone with zero interest in source material or fans. This is compounded by pushing it behind a wild pay wall.
I love how they keep making women the majority of the knights when the majority of people buying these sets are men, glad that's easily fixable
Main faults:
- the original is too good
- unjustified feminisation of masculine sets
- wrong changes
I mean, Goldfyre himself puts female knights in his armies. So I’m actually curious what you think of that?
I really hate that lego is really bad with red print on blue legs...
yeah it looks decent enough to me but it is slightly off
Lego Castle will get better
I hope so!
I will pass on this One
very basic set for very big prize .. free .. gwp basic wizard :( for me very bad
Me if I do get this gift with purchase I try to just strip it down for parts it's the best way to use it and yeah dissatisfied with this piece of garbage. C'mon lego stop fooling around.
Simple fix: don't buy it
Lego is tiet meagre
The problem Lego, and a lot of other companies are having, is the woke direction they have gone. Leave politics out of it.
@@ClassicStudStudios lol... to tell you how little I knew who goldfyre was, I didn't even realize he was the genesis of this video.
@@yourtruereview3621 LOL!, gotcha
Completely overrated
I think it's either we can get sets like this or nothing 🥲
I'm pretty hopeful that more interesting stuff is coming in 2024 :)
(full speculation & cope btw lol)
Bro first i thought u r gonna say smart things but then u started saying such bullshit
