I love almost all of Dream Theater's songs, but this one's always been special to me because it was the first time I saw anyone play anything as fast or as cool as that intro arpeggio solo on a guitar and it's one of two of their songs that convinced me I wanted to learn to play guitar at all.
This band has won every award they can win as a band and as individual instrumentalists. They all studied classical music, so they are pros and the greatest band today. They are still winning awards today, beating all of the new bands out there.
@@Robert-t5d5y Rudess is the only one who studied classical music. Petrucci, Myung and Portnoy went to study at the Berklee College of Music, which is more a jazz based conservatory and they didn't graduate, because DT took off so early.
When I first heard this song back in 2002 - the opening track on their album Six Degree of Inner Turbulence - my feeling was of being run over by a steam roller - again and again! I absolutely get your reaction here.
12 Step Suite in order: The Glass Prison This Dying Soul The Root of All Evil Repentance The Shattered Fortress They're all pretty epic, especially when you listen to them all in one go.
Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy called this saga "The twelve step suite"... w/ 'The Glass Prison' being Part 1 of 5... subsequent tracks were released on further DT albums. It was a tribute to the 12-step program by AA to combat alcoholism. The suite is: 1) The Glass Prison (from the 2002 album 'Six Degrees of inner turbulence') 2) This Dying Soul (from the 2003 album 'Train of Thought') 3) The root of all evil (from the 2005 album 'Octavarium') 4) Repentance (from the 2007 album 'Systematic Chaos') 5) The Shattered Fortress ( from the 2009 album 'Black clouds & silver linings') Mike Portnoy recalled entering a recovery program after 1999 to recover from his alcohol & drug abuse, which was affecting his status in Dream Theater... Thankfully, he was able to clean up his act by the 2002 album 'Six degrees of inner turbulence'... Mike Portnoy struggles w/ OCD which makes him restless and hyperactive... and although it gave Dream Theater a creative output, his mind would always be pulling in so many directions... He wrote the DT song 'Constant Motion'... about his struggle w/ OCD.
With Buddy Rich you have the Godfather with Neil Peart you have the Professor and with Mike Portnoy you have the Architect! Need I say more?🎼🥁🌹

One of my favorite metal bands!!! These guys are next-level musicians!! Dream Theater rarely gets airplay because their songs are normally over 8 minutes long. I have a few dozen songs of theirs to suggest!! 🤘
You mention the drummer he’s singing background vocals while playing lol truly amazing talent, and the guitarist as well between the three it’s almost like his inner demons fighting for control
Hello, my gorgeous Red. it is so great to find you exploring this rabbit hole called Dream Theater. As a fellow reactor once put it: DT is the perfect mixture of nearly unbelievable musicianship and technicality with great sense of melody and harmony. Most progressive metal bands lack either in one or the other (apart from Rush, I might add...). With an open mind you can't go wrong with this band, even if it could be sometimes a longer process to understand what they've done... DT is an "album band", imho, so sometimes it might be difficult to react and analyze a single track without the context of the album, but there are so few reactions to Dream Theater on RUclips, so I am eternally grateful that you give them a platform. I don't want to suggest any specific song, just because they are all great in one way or the other. But if you want to do yourself, me and everyone else a favor, please react to Illumination Theory (Live in Boston). For me, this masterpiece is the quintessence of DT: orchestral, technical, melodious, epic, emotional, uplifting... just a rollercoaster ride in 20 minutes (ruclips.net/video/OaUbq3fghWQ/видео.html). As you can see on my DT logo inspired profile pic, this band is extremely precious to me since I heard their first album in 1989, and a lot of live concerts and records and decades later they still matter in my life. So thanks again for checking them out and spread the word... With love from Germany, Prog O'Holic
I must say that your one the deeper thinking video channels. Iam aware of dream theater very interesting band...well done in the way you deconstruck the music.....
Welcome to the Dream Theater rabbit hole! They are like Rush and Metallica had a baby...lol. There is a ton of music to explore. I highly recommend Pull Me Under, Under a Glass Moon and The Spirit Carries On (from the Breaking the Fourth Wall DVD) just for starters.
Dream Theater is a killer band. I've seen them live about 6 times over the years. I also have a ticket to see them in February. They are an amazing band live. My favorite song from them is Learing To Live!! Give that one a listen!
I don't know where you live, but i highly suggest you go see them live on the tour they start October 20 in London. Check out their dates, Europe then South America, and then USA and Canada. If you are in shock listening to their songs from RUclips, imagine how they will blow your mind on stage. Looking forward to my 5th time seeing them live!
Best live performances are Live at Budokan and Score. These guys in person are insane. This was written by Mike Portnoy part of his 12 step suite because of addiction which is 5 songs I believe, a song off their awake album that is judged to be the beginning. These guys are known for massive transitions that are seamless and are considered the best in the biz.
As someone before me said and it's true for Dream Theater music, if you want to listen to a song of them for the first time, the wisest option is to listen to the studio version. Unless it's a ballad which is played slow and mellow and it's more likely to follow the music easier live. I get it, you want to see them play live and it's cool, but it's one thing to listen to them live as a fan and another thing to listen to them live as someone just getting into them. Their music is so so so complicated that you will only be able to understand it better in the album because you will be able to listen more clearly and carefully what they are playing. And again, you will certainly need many many listens to fully understand their music since there are so many tempo changes, melodies and intricacies that it's impossible to get them with only a few listens. Anyway, it's exciting seeing first time reactions to their songs, because believe it or not, i feel like listening to them again for the first time myself, even when i have listened to them hundreds and thousands of times. Every reaction for the first time makes it sound to me as new and fresh and that's really awesome. I am a new listener again and try to explore the emotions i get as a random listener. Fortunately there are way too many DT songs to react to, plus their new album is released February 7th 2025. Keep them reactions coming, I'm following! Oh and something else. DT fans love for the band is so overwhelming that we flock to see new reaction videos to their music anywhere and everywhere we find them. That's why your comment section is full of DT fans. And they are almost always willing to guide you with album recommendations and various nuggets about the band, its members etc. So it's something normal, the DT fanboyism is real 😀 PS. Next songs to react to. Lines in the sand, Breaking all illusions, In the name of God, A view from the top of the world, A change of Seasons, Learning to live, Six degrees of Inner Turbulence.
I've loved this band for over 30 years now, and I've seen them perform spectacularly several times. But this recording is abysmal. I'm glad you could get around it. I couldn't. lol
Hi dear, about this video, you're open the gate of twelve step suite. The glass prison it's a first gate. I suggest you to complete the puzzle till the end of this final boss song it's call The shattered fortress. I can give u the list after that. -The Glass prison ✅ -This Dying Soul - Root of all evil - Repentance - The shattered fortress Hope you realize and joy this twelve step suite 😁🤟🏽🔥

Yes, this song is relentless. Relentless for a reason- about being trapped in alcoholism. The next videos really should be the rest of the suite as stated by other commenters. Sim to ‘The Fear’ suite by Rush. These need to be listened to in order. One at a time though- they are all lengthy.
While I love this performance, always listen to the studio versions first. Edit: The sound quality is just better and it's what most people heard first. Love your reactions still

So nice to see you reacting to DT. My only issue is the quality of the video, I wish you had done the studio version to hear everything more clear. While DT is great to see live, some songs/concerts don't have the best quality unfortunately, unless they're from the official DVDs.
You should react to the live version, from the POV of Mike. The whole video has multiple cameras on him, and only him. Its on a channel called "drumsandmusic", and is simply titled: Mike Portnoy - The Glass Prison (Live). Im a big fan of your reactions. Cheers from 🇨🇦.
