Welcome to a brand new Rabbit Hole! These are by far THE top notch musicians of our current time. Influenced by Rush, Yes etc... Their songs are stories and the musicianship is just out of this world. If you are in for another live check out Dream Theater live at the boston opera house illumination theory! Deep lyrics and insane playing!
Dream Theatre is one of my favourite bands. Each musician is so good at their respective instrument. The drummer, Mike Portnoy is a really great drummer and John Petrucci is a fantastic guitarist. The singer James LaBrie is Canadian, he's from a town not far from me and I've had the immense pleasure of meeting him at my nephews business a few years ago, it was like a dream lol. We spent about an hour hanging out by the lake, that was a great moment in my life. They do a lot of cool things in their music, and Rush is one of their influences. They have heavy sounds, and they have ballads, so many great songs are in my music list. "As I Am", "Endless Sacrifice", "Misunderstood", "Wither", "Peruvian Skies", "Disappear", "Hollow Years", "The Answer Lies Within", "These Walls", "Sacrificed Sons", to name only a few. Give them a listen, you will love this rabbit hole. I had to edit to add the fact that this particular performance was with the drummer, Mike Mangini, who took place of Mike Portnoy for 13 years. Mike Portnoy was with Dream Theater from the beginning, left in 2010, persued other projects and then returned in 2023.
When describing these guys I always say they are like rush cranked to 11 lol. The band was formed while they were in school at Berkeley school of music and the keyboard player was a child prodigy who went to Juliard school
And what’s more, the band’s original name (Majesty) came from the founding members waiting in line for a Rush concert and listening to the end of Bastille Day.
Dream theater are awesome. Been playing for over 30 years together. Most are graduates of Berkley school of music. I highly recommend - dance of eternity. It'll blow your mind
I love how to always pay so close attention to the lyrics. I think you should check out The Spirits Carries On. It’s a beautiful and powerful ballad with very moving lyrics.
I'm sure I listened to them once on another reaction channel a couple of years ago and wasn't that taken with that particular song but I really liked this one. That riff at 9:08 and the tone of the guitars gave me real vibes of the sound of the Somewhere in Time Iron Maiden album from the eighties I'm happy to say I have no knowledge of the song's subject matter but I can only imagine it is extremely scary.
Ohhh, DT... yes please. Tickets for the 40th Anniversary tour go on sale end of the week for the North American dates! Can't wait! Found them in the early 90s and been a big fan since. Guys that grew up as big fans of Rush, Yes and other classic prog bands, along with being classically trained themselves... John Petrucci, just a beast on lead guitar... but the entire band is fantastic...
Here are some Dream Theater suggestions: Traditional songs - 'Pull me under' ... 'Caught in a web' ... 'Constant motion' ... 'On the backs of angels' Ballads - 'Another day' ... 'Wither' ... 'The spirit carries on' ... 'Anna Lee' Instrumentals - 'YTSE Jam' ... 'Enigma machine' ... 'The dance of eternity' Epic Dream Theater tracks - 'A change of seasons' ... 'The glass prison' ... 'Trial of Tears'... 'The Count of Tuscany' 🤘🤘
Saw an interview with Geddy a few years back, maybe a little before Neil passed away. He was asked what music he listens to now that he was retired from Rush. I was expecting him to list off some of the Rush offspring like Dream Theater, Tool, Iron Maiden, etc. No. He said he doesn't listen to any of that. Said he spends all his time listening to jazz. Funny, I do the same thing when I'm not listening to Rush.
Yeah… John Myung (bassist) is an absolute monster on the bass but flies a lot under the radar because he’s such a quiet and unassuming individual in a group who are equally as talented as he is. These guys are all god-tier musicians, except for the singer who’s merely human (though not bad by human standards). XD some of the most interesting and complex music out there.
Oh wow, great to see you get to Dream Theater. ‘Count of Tuscany’ is a not to be missed song although I would lean toward studio for DT as the lead singers voice is a bit hit and miss since he seriously damaged it early in his career. He is fine in the studio and has delivered some great performances but the quality drifts and varies live. The other musicians are however without peers and they have many years of amazing music to discover.
Welcome to dream theater, a band of great variety. Everyone will recommend individual songs (not a bad thing) but especially since you understand the story the music is telling on top of the actual lyrics, I would recommend the 12 step suite. The original (and now current) drummer (Mike portnoy) wrote what he calls the 12 step suite, which is his story of going through AA. The twelve steps are written across five songs in different albums. "The Glass Prison" contains the first three parts of the Suite ("Reflection", "Restoration", and "Revelation"). If you want to do more dream theater, I always recommend those songs in order as a good variety en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_Suite?wprov=sfla1
They way I've always described Dream Theater was Rush level musicianship + Metallica sound + Iron Maiden Vocals. Panic Attack is a great introduction to the band as it's a happy balance of everything they do well without going to extreme in either category. It's a little too close to probably record and get it out, but they have a 9/11 tribute song called Sacrificed Sons. Check out the live version from the 2006 Score concert in NYC and you'll find it's more like Nightwish than you initially realized.
Red your reactions are never clumsy they always make sense to me anyway. I think you are spot on with what you said a in between fried between Metallica and Nightwish💯💯💯#dreamtheater #panicattack #dreamtheaterreaction #dreamtheaterwacken #wacken #redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulfuncountrygirl #31K #heartofgoldwithmetalinhersoul #bestbadjokes #Rushcrush #redheadparrothead #warningawarningaddict #parrotheads #parrothead #redrocker
Personally, I'd have picked a more palatable song to introduce u to Dream Theater, but u jumped into the deep end... The members of Dream Theater were huge Rush fans and became good friends w/ them early in their career. Even Rush in interviews mentioned that Dream Theater was a band that truly impressed them... As far as their music, DT went for a progressive metal sound but they also have their mellow, subtle songs because they were also fans of Journey, Queen, Kansas, Genesis, etc. Hailing from New York, the band was originally formed as Majesty in 1985 when John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) met Mike Portnoy (drums) at Berklee College of Music and decided to form a band that could be as complex as early Rush and metal as early Queensryche... Kevin Moore (keyboards) joined and the band recorded demos in the hope of getting signed. A record deal came in 1988 and the band recorded a new batch of songs (separate from their demos) w/ Charlie Dominici (vocals) for their debut album 'When dream and day unite' ...They didn't have the rights to the name 'Majesty', so they changed the band name to Dream Theater after a movie in California, where Mike Portnoy's father lived. They still kept Majesty's 'M' logo as the band's insignia... 'When dream and day unite' was released in 1989 but sold poorly... Dream Theater never toured on the album, so it was left to flounder... the record itself showed potential but was somewhat crude... The band wanted a better singer and kept writing while auditioning new singers... Finally in 1991, James LaBrie (vocals) came down from Canada and became Dream Theater's voice... They also switched record labels and released 2nd album 'Images and words' in 1992... This time, they did a world tour and the single 'Pull me under' became a top 40 hit... the album sold gold in the US (half million copies) and Dream Theater built huge fanbases in Europe and Japan overnight by 1993. However, subsequent Dream Theater albums 'Awake' (1994) and 'Falling into infinity' (1997) did not fare as well commercially... Mike Portnoy felt that the band could do better musically without pandering to the music industry... Jordan Rudess (keyboards) was a student at Julliard School of Music and a musical genius - he joined Dream Theater in 1999 (Kevin Moore quit the band in 1994) and their concept album 'Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory' became a musical triumph in '99 as the band performed the entire record on tour as part of a 3 hr set every night. Dream Theater continued to build their fanbase w/ each new record and tour, celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2005 w/ the release of their 8th album 'Octavarium'... But after their 10th album 'Black clouds & silver linings' in 2009, drummer Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater. In 2011, Dream Theater announced the addition of Mike Mangini (drums) and released the album 'A dramatic turn of events'... the band became even more successful as more albums charted consistently all over the world and the band would tour North and South America... East Asia, Australia, and Europe... Their latest (15th) album 'A view from the top of the world' was released in 2021. In 2023, Dream Theater announced that original drummer Mike Portnoy was returning to the band... By 2024, they announced the completion of a new album and the launch of their 40th anniversary tour.
Part II 😮 PANIC ATTACKS!! Know them well since 1981ish I started having them. At first I noticed it was more at season change. Late fall and Spring. A couple things helped; 1) I realized I didn't drink enough water. Maybe a cup a day (?) 2) Having A.D.D. I learned my brain doesn't ignore background noise like normal people. While others automatically dismiss A.D.D. persons keep trying to process until overload. 3) Quality sleep 💤 I've always averaged 3-4 hours so naps help and I hope this helps another!!! ☮️♾️
This band has the best musicians on the planet check out there Fall into the light there are so many hits from this band also At wits end is another must my friend love ya
Hmmm So 1992 I was bored with the current stuff and then KAABLAAAMM 💥 on the radio was a song called PULL ME UNDER⁉️⁉️ My jaw dropped, brain said FINALLY!! And I went and got the full polyvinyl disc!! This tune never heard. Might have to hear the studio version. Great Reaction Red!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Two DT recommendations. 1. "The Dance of Eternity" - ruclips.net/video/8Ik9qECIWgc/видео.html (note: there are no vocals/lyrics...this is just the guys doing what they do...and it's awesome.) 2. "The Spirit Carries On (Metropolis Pt. 2, Live at New York, 2000) " - ruclips.net/video/ewA65TUznok/видео.html (have tissues nearby, this may/will generate tears) Like Rush, I could sit and list out their entire catalog...but, I'll let everyone else help fill in the gaps. 🙃
On their first album, When Dreams and Day Unite, they sounded nothing more than Rush clones. Then they found and refined their own sound over many subsequent albums. You have to work your way slowly to Octovarium.
While Rush is still my number 1, Dream Theater and Tool are neck and neck for my number two. The one thing I have to say about DT is they create some of the most complex music that you will hear. A tapestry of sound!
@@JackiePlage It's kinda funny. I found Dream Theatre to be OK but I often asked myself, why listen to DT when I can listen to Rush. @@joesixpack8305 I'm one of the latter - listened to Rush throughout the late '70s and early '80s, they had a run from 2112 through Moving Pictures that was truly amazing, but dropped off a bit with Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows. I saw them live like 6-7 times during that period (1976-1982). Then DT came along and caught my attention in the mid '90s. First song I listened to was "Home" and I was hooked immediately. I'm still loving them almost 30 years later. I'm gonna catch their show in Madrid on Nov. 17th, it will be the 10th or 11th concert of theirs I've been to. Hey RHN, I have seen DT several times and they are just nuts live. This band could go at a million miles an hour for eternity. Glad you liked them. They have a ton of albums out there. Great job RHN!!!! 👍👍
You will definitely like Dream Theater. They’re like a rush on steroids !
Yes! That’s exactly how I describe them!
Dream Theater is one of many Rush babies.
