Miah... don't kill me, but the absolute joy on Ben's face over the "little farm boy" sized greenhouse made me think there should be a Ben sized window greenhouse on your farm... like "window greenhouse 2.5"!!!

Just a tip that might be helpful - we take some plastic jugs (like milk or laundry jugs) and paint them black. Then we fill them with water, and during the day they warm up while at night they distribute the heat and help a little to keep the greenhouse space a tad warmer on cooler nights.

I was just thinking that! You could even use larger 10 gallon buckets and secure them to the greenhouse frame. That way you get an anchor and heat source.
I saw a video that used a rain barrel full of water and used a fish water tank heater to warm the greenhouse.

I used t-posts to anchor the corners of my tiny greenhouse last year. Bricks and cinder blocks around the cover helped too. Held up to 50+ mph winds.
We did that too, we also duct taped all the joints. It took 100+ mph winds to finally take it 2 years later.
Had one 18" x 3 'x 4' that it didn't tip but the wind ripped the plastic to shreds. Was able to recycle the bones and use in my greenhouse that my in-laws bought. As far as the heat issue, we put it right up next to the south side of the house. Planted some seeds in a lidded rectangular container that salad came in. I put two drainage holes in the bottom and two half inch holes equally spaced in the lid. Planted some cool weather seeds in it. It did really well. Just transplanted the choy and cress that came up in it. Note the cress is in a hanging container in the greenhouse and the choy in a raised bed near the kale.

Me too! T posts do the trick. We had 60+ mph winds last summer. Didn't budge. My only gripe about these is the shelves are garbage. I ditched them and zip tied bread crates to the framework. I love mine.

I love that you are doing this for your viewers. We grew everything in one of these our first year of seed starting. It went ok. We needed a space heater to keep temperatures above freezing. Also, I HIGHLY suggest putting duct tape on the shelves in the back where it touches the plastic. The sharp edges ripped the plastic! Good luck. 🌱🍅🌻

We used that green house last year for “over flow” plants. We put cinder blocks on the bottom shelves to prevent it from flipping over in strong winds

Same here. Good for stability and increased thermal mass if you can get some consistent sunshine on those blocks during the day. They radiate a decent amount of heat at night.
I used this green house last spring for a few weeks. I did the same. I used cinder blocks and had it up against my house. We had a windy day. The green house didn't tip, but the metal poles snapped in half. All my seedlings on the ground.
We used that green house as well last year with the cinder blocks on the edges and bags of potting mix on the lower shelves. We also upgraded the stakes to 1 foot steel rods that we already had. We had some high winds and strong storms…pretty normal here in Texas. The greenhouse held up great! The zipper is hard to zip up now and down and the tie straps broke your the end of the season, but I’m still using it. We added a bigger polycarbonate greenhouse this year with a better anchoring system and hope it holds up, too.

Good for the youngun's, cause there is a rumor going round that only a true southerner knows exactly where yonder is! I've already started a few seeds, and add to them each day, I use my porch and the lean too barn stall. I have to say though you gave me the encouragement and knowledge to try starting my own seeds. Last year I grew enough to share with family and friends. One of those friends told me the other day that my tomato seedling's did better than any of the others she grew last year! So take a bow, you've earned it! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! I am sure your Father is so proud of you... Both of them 💝

Hi Jess and fam. I have the same greenhouse. It works well and stayed hot. Like 90-100 F. Im not sure how warm it was at night bc i never checked. I used zip ties on the shelves. I just had a cheap thermometer. I put heavy bricks around the edges to keep it from flying over. It worked well on my deck. The garage is a great idea
also, that green plastic degrades pretty quickly in the sun. it lasted one summer. after which, i had to cover with 6ml uv green house plastic, which also helped with heat retention.
We did zip ties on the shelves, too. Concrete blocks around the outside edges holding the cover down, and a couple inside on the rails. I'm on year 2 with mine, and I love it!
Seeing your pond, made me wonder how your weeping willow tree you planted is doing? would LOVE to see it sometime when you have some time.. Your farm is moving along a lot quicker than I thought . you all are doing a fantastic job.

Just a couple of ideas for keeping it warm at night if it does freeze.
1) crockpot
2) 5 gallon bucket with an aquarium heater
Both should provide enough warmth and humidity. Although I’ve never tried either in a small greenhouse, the crockpot worked wonderfully for me to help heat up small room full of plants. And a friend with a small greenhouse suggested the aquarium heater. I already had a crockpot, so that’s what I actually used. It was a 6 quart crockpot and filled with water it lasted a good 24 hrs
I have one of these greenhouses. My friend bought it for her mom and they never opened it, so when I started gardening she gave it to me. I don't use it for seed starting, except for moving them out of the house. It's good for giving my hot weather plants a little extra push. I've never had a problem with it blowing away, but mine is in a corner with the house and fence against it. Found it pretty easy to put together too, just sorted pieces before I started.

When Jess was still in Arkansas, she was in the central part of the state. I live in the northwest corner of the same state, about a 3 hour drive. I always started my seeds about 2 weeks after she did to adjust for the different climates. In the central part of the state, they averaged 80 inches i think she said, while our average is closer to 50. I found it so fascinating how different our climates are.

You can always run strings over the top and stake into the ground. For protection run it through an old garden hose. That way it rubs ellesse thank you for what you all do. Have a great day
Jess and Miah, I’ve recommended that y’all set up a few owl nesting boxes around your gardens before. They will help dramatically with field mice, moles etc that will go after all your in ground gardens. I saw what looked like nesting boxes on the ground when you started talking near your raised beds although those don’t have large enough openings for owls. I sincerely hope you will seriously consider getting at least two and setting them up on really high posts.
Only problem with that is an owl will pick off the chickens too. Sometimes they will even take a cat, depending on the type of owl.
We have a natural nest situation and have at least two and I think three pairs. The larger pair (I looked them up but don't remember what kind) has tried to get through our avian netting and our cats keep out of sight when they are flying. I love having them around but have to plan for them.
For an even more cost effective option, I built my own. It is a more labor intensive choice, but isn't gardening sweat equity? I went to a local windshield installer and got 2 of their shipping crates. They are solid oak frames for shipping glass, so are very solidly built, but just frames. I stood them on end and used the open tops as doors. Then covered in heavy painters plastic tarps to cover. An old pallet for the door and shelves works super well. I didn't even have to cut the lumber because I got lucky on sizing of the pallets. They are heavy enough to stand stable in the occasional 80 mph winds I get here. They also retain heat pretty well, down to about 20 Fahrenheit.
Edit: total cost was about $15.00 for both. They can start about 80 plants each.
Yes, definitely needs to be anchored well! Pretty flimsy! Lol, you ca try holding on to it when is windy if you want to try flying a green house!😂😂. Sorry, I couldn't resist! Well kidding aside, you have to tie this down well to protect your seeds, it totally can be done! Can't wait to see what you and Mayah come up with!

Thank you SO much for trying to find affordable options. I'm in a rental house right now but I still want to garden on some level, it's therapeutic for me. I just don't have the space inside and the garage is pretty chilly. I can't wait to see how this works out. Thank you for remembering what it's like to be "stupid poor" and still trying to help others overcome obstacles. I simply love you and your families caring spirit.
I rent, too. Planning a grow bag garden on a back cement slab for things needing a deeper root space and one or two vertical towers for lettuce, etc. Been years since I've gardened, and that was all in ground. Best wishes for your success. God bless.

I saw on another post they recommended putting corrugated cardboard over wire shelves to help maintain heat and to even out pressure/weight. It was on a post about indoor seed starting with a heat may but I think it would apply here too.

Who'd a thunk? My husband used to have one of those mega vans that seat 14 people and have a ton of windows sitting out on the back of our lot. It would have made a great greenhouse!

That wind kicked up here in Alabama about 5:30 pm Thursday night. It WAS a strong front. I saw your other video on Abundance plus( and Justin’s show too) . You’re awesome, you’re loved and you’re in my prayers strong lady!
We had lived on our 5 acres for 15 years before noticing a problem with drainage. After a particularly heavy snow, we had a warm day with rain. All that snow melted, gathered goat poop, and flowed all the way up to the house and filled our well pit.
Miah is so much like my husband. Totally an engineer. I tell my husband “I want something that does THIS,” and he makes it happen. He’s setting up my seed starting area in the finished part of our basement, near his massive fishtanks. It’s where we have room. Our last frost date is mid May, and we’ve had snow into May before…because, Ohio.

Kids are so adaptable. My niece and nephews grew up in a very small rural southern town. Their accents were so thick they sounded like they had a mouth full of grits when they spoke. Then they moved to Washington state as pre-teens. When they visited about a year after their move, they spoke with perfect Washington state accents with no trace of their southern accents....BIG change!
Blows my mind you guys don’t have a personal weather station yet! I love knowing exactly what conditions my garden is experiencing at any given time, how much rain we get, how much light and how intense that light is, using multiple temp sensors for my seeds and other plants. I find it helps inform my gardening and I love seeing the data personalized to my yard year after year. The fancy Davis brand weather stations even do custom frost alerts, calculate chill hours, soil moisture levels, all sorts of fun stuff.

The awareness doesn't fade with age. I grew up on a farm. Throughout out my adult life whenever it starts storming at night I wake up and go through a mental checklist about anything that could be negativity affected. Chicks, and feed barrels come to mind first, even though for the majority of my adult life I haven't had either. Working back towards it...❤️
I got one almost EXACTLY like this for Christmas and it has been holding heat almost TOO well. In NC and even on a cold day it stays around 80 minimum. I will say that we attached it to the T-posts of our garden fence as well as a tree because those little metal tie downs are useless. In addition, I put paver blocks on the flaps at the ground to reduce air thru there and help as an anchor as well. The only thing different with mine is that I have 2 windows I can roll up to get cross ventilation without the door being wide open. I highly recommend this provided you properly secure it!

My Ruby kitty now 15, has always hunted...baby snakes, mice, moles, baby bunnies, fish out of the pond, frogs, and 2 weeks ago, a grown squirrel. She brings the kill up next to the steps. It's her gig...I'm not complaining.

I had one of the cheaper plastic greenhouses last year. My husband put cinderblocks around the bottom outside and I never had a problem with it blowing over. The main issue I had with mine was it retaining heat over night. During the day as soon as the sun made it over the trees it was perfect, but when the sun went down almost all heat was lost even with it fully zipped up
use a small heater and add some totes to warm up the water causing some heat during the night

I am on my second season with 2 of these outside. We tied rope around it to hold it in place. There are straps in the greenhouse. We then zip tied the shelves . Works great if taken care of we put it in storage when not in use. I started so many seeds in them.

I actually have one of this style of temporary greenhouse. Second year using it. The plastic cover is peppered with little holes because cats. Lol. I have ours in a laundry closet, with 2 grow lights, and a small space heater with a thermostat on it, and a chicken brooder thermometer. It's working for the most part. My take and advice for those who have no choice but to put it outside, anchor it the best you can, and zip tie the shelves to the rods. If you get a shaking wind, it will pop the shelves off and dump your plants on the ground.
Yes, if the wind racks the thing around, the shelves do tend to come apart and dump the plant trays -

I start seeds indoors under grow lights now.... I could see using this as a temporary structure for hardening off my plants outdoors before transplanting! The price is right.

Morning Jess, it’s 1:11am in the uk and your blog just dropped so I had to watch before going to bed. We have terrible wind gusts in the uk and three people have sadly lost their lives today. Worst in 30 years xx thank you for sharing your lives with us xx I look forward to your vlogs

Save the pipes and connectors! Years after the plastic is gone I still use the pipes from staking plants to shelves inside my bigger greenhouse beds for my watermelons. (In Sweden! )
I actually used one of these inside my house to start seeds one year. Then i took it outside when weather was above freezing and my plants did awesome. I did zip tie the wire shelves too. And then i used rebar rods one all four corners to make it somewhat sturdy from the weight added.
I used a little covered plastic greenhouse indoors w/ grow lights to maintain my seedlings' moisture and heat inside my kitchen (it's 8°F/ -13.3°C outside when my area starts seeds).

I have something similar. I cannot generally start my seeds in it early. I use mine to harden off and move seedlings I start indoors to the outside. I usually move the plants back inside overnight until it is warm enough. We always attach it to our fence with tie-wraps or it would totally blow over. It might be warm enough where you are.
Ahhh yes. The cheap greenhouse that almost blew over our 8' tall fence at our previous place. Lost a lot of seedlings we started and had to resort to getting starts at the big box store. The covering rip and the Amazon seller were gracious on replacing it for us for free. I have yet to put it back up since. I probably have it in the shop somewhere.
It is a nice office Miah. I enjoy my "office" like yours. Garden dreaming, beekeeping, and chickens are best in my hammock where I can observe from my little haven.

I have the green plastic greenhouse. I do have it in an area where it is protected from the wind. I started seeds in it last year and it did well. Getting ready to start mine for this year. It was a good one for a first. I plan on getting a larger more permanent green house next winter.

Saw one another vlogger had and before he could plant or start seeds they had a wind and rain storm. His was tied down and sheltered by his house, but the aluminum frame was a crumpled bent mess and some of the plastic panels had sailed away. At first I thought it might be a good fit for me, but would have had to put mine on a cement slab (no tie down areas) so nope, not a fit for me.
I’m from Michigan and seeing the warm beautiful weather made my day. We are currently in a snow storm and I’m just dreaming of my garden ❤️
We flattened our land in our backyard and now my garden is getting flooded. So now I have to figure it out. I bought this type of greenhouse and so far love it. Survived our surprise snow storm Tuesday and my lemon trees survived. I zip tied my shelves as well and used my own anchors vs then the ones that came with it
My yellow lab loves your show, my dog is named Bear, so he is a kindred spirit with your Bear! Haha! We live on the Olympic Peninsula and we get an average of 148” of rain a year, we know water!!
I put 1 foot flat pavers in each corner and with the tie downs as well, mine has never blown over! I also run a little heater inside at night in early spring which works well. It holds heat well during the day. I have the first one you put together👍🏼 luv it💖

I have one of the vinyl ones, and it's been ok. I have mine in a sheltered location, so it hasn't blown away yet. Ran a small heater at night when temp dipped. I built a real structural greenhouse last year, and can't wait to try it this spring!
You don't need a farm to fret strong winds. Every homeowner feels that way.
I used one if these for years until my husband bought my real one. When I bought it, it was $40. I used black barrels filled with water, to put inside it helped. I tethered it down and hooked it to a wood fence. I have a tall thin one for holding pots and transition plants on the backside side of my coop. Tethered to the chainlink. It has stood through utah cold, sun, wind and snow. The zippers break first year. You need to tie the plastic inside at the corners or it will blow off of frame..

Cold frames are cheap to make and great for seed starting and lengthening seasons. You can make them with old windows too
I’ve used one like this before. Best way for it to work is to have the back against a wall or fence and place 2 concrete deck blocks on each side. DO NOT use cord or rope it will rub through the material pretty easily if you have lots of wind. Instead use a wide ratchet strap around one deck block across the top and down to another deck block. Do this on the sides back and front (4 blocks with 2 straps over the top)
I started out with one of these greenhouses last spring to move my plants outside. I put it up against my cottage shed and anchored it down. It has never blown over or even moved at all. I am still going to use it again this spring as our window greenhouse took a back seat to the Kune kunes. We do what we gotta do.😁
I rigged up an outdoor safe power strip and extension cord from our outdoor outlet and used heat mats in my little plastic greenhouse last year (about half the size of that one. My seed starting was a little bit of a challenge with bad starting medium. But once I got that figured out, the heat mats helped keep the starts warm enough when the night time temps got low. Just anchor that sucker down as much as possible. It got very warm in there during the day time, just didn't hold heat at night. I don't have a lot of room in my little backyard classroom, so I did what I could and learned a lot. In a pinch you can do a lot with a small investment.
I’ve used these for the last 8ish years. Open it during the day to vent, close at night. I put a little ceramic heater in it at times if nights get close to freezing. I use flat pavers inside & bricks outside to weight it down. I also use posts pounded in inside at the frame and tie it to the posts. Lastly, I use hay bale twine to criss-cross tie between the framework to keep it tight together and tie to the typists. For winter, lay pool noodles across the top framework and then drape another layer of clear plastic across the drop and down to the ground, holding it on tight to the ground with cinder blocks, a bit away from the sides, to trap air for warmth. Doing that, plus a ceramic heater at night kept citrus trees alive in NE AL in single and teen digits overnight. They last about 2-3 years before I need a new cover . The frame will rust out, so the last one I set on top of pavers and then put bricks on the frame hoping that will make it last. Our storms come mostly from the N & NW so I put it up with a building blocking the worst wind from those sides, since we get 40-60mph winds weekly. Hope that helps.
A paver floor would also help retain heat probably or even a small layer of gravel.
Rainbow garden repurposed one of those greenhouses after the seams disintegrated to grow cucumbers and beans in containers as a trellis. So, if it is a fail that's always an option!
I had this green house before, except my metal post was different. I drove metal rods in the ground on all 4 corners, with about 2' of rods out of ground. Set the corners down over rods, it was pretty secure, and I added concrete block on top of plastic on the ground corners. I used this several years, but did take it down and stored after each use after planting garden. , I never started seeds in mine, but put seedling in it after they were up. I started my seeds in the basement. I think heated matts would help too. Hope this helps.
I use a 5 gallon bucket in my greenhouse with an aquarium heater in it as a heat sink for warmth and as weight so it doesn't blow over. Mine just has 4 shelves and has served me and all the friends I start seed for during the past five years. I have been known to tie it to a basketball pole for safety. Oh my Jess, where there is a will there is a way!
Yup, attaching it to something solid is key. I often attach a couple t posts to mine.
You can keep your seedlings warm with a large trash can, fill with water, and warm the water with a fish tank heater. It should keep them about 20° warmer at night. Good luck! 💜
So, my partner bought me that same first greenhouse you put up. Yes, it’s flimsy. We put it up in my basement JUST for seed starting. No, I wouldn’t want to put it outside. Still, we used a TON of zip ties, added a couple of heat mats, some lights, a tool holder panel, a couple of Alexa compatible electric extensions, a hydrometer and a fan! And it’s awesome!
Makes me wish I had a basement!
I think this is the perfect green house when your done with it for Ben as his "FIRST" greenhouse. He seems to be the gardener in the bunch! I think it would be cool to let him have it and plant what he wants.😊 We zip tied our shelves and used bungee cord to attach it to our deck lattice work we have on the sides that create a pergola. We have one of those that is very similar and cheaply made from Aldi Grocery Store. It was worked great...and in the summer I put seeds for microgreens in there in trays. Works terrific.
I have one of those greenhouses & it works so well. All of my tomato’s germinated in about 5 days. My husband is an electrician & he hooked up an Amazon heater to it & I have some heat mats in there too. We just anchored the greenhouse onto some 2 by 4’s with some type of metal anchor (I don’t know what it’s called but my husband had some in his toolbox) so that it’s secure. I keep it right in front of my in ground garden outside. The temperature stays around 75ish at night with outdoor temperatures anywhere between 20-35. During the day on a sunny day, I open both windows & it stays around 80. Point of the story is, if you rig it up, these little cheap greenhouses can really work!
