You were actually a huge inspiration that kind of confirmed that I could shoot a full length feature film, all by myself, and be the only actor in the film, which I went ahead and did, during the pandemic, on my phone. It became an award winning film. And so, thank you. 🙏😉
@@hggy Pls I'm a Nigerian, and I want to open a PayPal acct but it refuses to open here in my country, can someone help me with that, I need it for my business
Another great video. I personally like the idea of building an audience that doesn’t expect an elaborately produced effort every time I upload. That being said, i want to have the occasional surprise to let them know I can. And its so fulfilling to create awesome content. Its just a lot of work committing to it when I am always alone. Im realizing its a must if I want a certain level of success here. So Thank you.
Pls I'm a Nigerian, and I want to open a PayPal account but it refuses to open here in my country, can someone help me with that, I need it for my business
Heres my tip. Give your footage extra time. If you are filming a standard tripod shot of an object just hold the shot a little longer than you think you need. Nothing is more annyoing then when you are editing and your shot needed to just be a few more seconds longer and then it ends.... On the flipside dont be stagnant on your angles. So to sum it up. Film lots of angles but hold the shot a little longer than you think. Once you get it move to the next!
I loved your video. I agree 100% with your final thoughts: filming by yourself can be very frustrating and time-consuming, you're gonna miss focus and mess up the frame and composition but you learn a lot by doing any single aspect of making a video. I just started and I am a noob but I know that trial and error is the best way to improve. And that's what I love about it :)
It took me five years to make my no-budget debut feature film, and that was with using non-actors in front of the camera. How you're helping others achieve making their films with just themselves in front of the camera - I take my hat off to you. Well done!
One of your best videos, the way you back up the tips with your visual storytelling is chefs kiss. I also think you have some of the best composition I've seen on RUclips
I kinda started making videos very recently and i thought i had an idea of how to go about doing so just based on the media ive consumed (definitely didnt). I love what u said about there not being a set of answers but rather trying to create a feeling.
I just want to let you know that you're not alone. I am doing the same thing my friend. I try. That's all I can do. I wish you nothing but luck, prosperity and success moving forward my friend. We are ultimately all in this together. Just keep your head up and keep moving forward. We're not alone.
I'm a newer creator and have definitely felt kinda foolish trying to film myself. At least I'm usually alone in the woods so people aren't watching me 😅 but these are some amazing tips and thank you for making this video!
Pls I'm a Nigerian, and I want to open a PayPal account but it refuses to open here in my country, can someone help me with that, I need it for my business
Just starting off my career as a content creator and wasn't to sure on how to film myself. I can tell these tips alone will aid to my success tremendously. Much appreciated!
Good tips. I got a dji mini 2 drone over the summer (not the greatest one out there but 4k atleast). Adding the drone as another tool has been nice to spice it up, and add some motion, from just tripod shots. Obviously not everyone can run out and buy expensive drones, and not everyone can fly one efficiently. But for solo content creators they are really nice to have
Wow i think i remember that video you shared a couple years ago. You’ve grown since the days of nosmallcreator, when i first learned about you. Your content is so timeless and fruitful. Thanks for sharing!
These are always fun for me to watch. I feel like you are one of the best at this Jake. I've been struggling lately in the very very early phases of shooting my own RUclips content, and filming solo as both the "talent" on-camera and the operator is quite a challenge, especially when you want to make it interesting. Something else that I think not a lot of people talk about is that it's kinda hard to get together with people to film if you are in certain phases of your life. For me I'm 33 with a full-time job, a business that my wife and I also operate, and a 4 year old son. Most of the people I know and call friends are either 500 miles away or living a similarly hectic life that make shooting together basically impossible. These tips and just watching your content helps remind me that it is possible to do it by yourself and do it really well. It just takes patience and creativity as you mention. Thanks for sharing man.
Tried to film myself this morning and got so frustrated. Found this video this afternoon and it was genuinely so helpful, even the last tip. I gotta be patient. Thanks man.
This has inspired me to head out tomorrow and try to film. I may not end up making a video, but I guess it is the practice and the consistency of doing the act that will improve the result over time. thank you
You are hands down one of, if not my favorite film channels to watch. You have a great talent in telling your story in away that's easy to relate to. Thanks for taking the time to share all your valuable knowledge. 🤘🏻
Every obstacle that comes in life should be studied and learned.Obstacles are sometimes our best teachers,as we always can learn something from them, and improve our selves! Keep doing great job!

love this! def agree with the “getting bored of a locked off shot and finding new angles”!!! my biggest pain point with filming myself is figuring out how to manually focus myself 🥲 any tips on that?
What an awesome video! In a sense, filming by yourself is better than filming with somebody. It helps you be more creative, and try new things with your project.
Loved filming, fantasy action, crazy fanfilms by myself. Had my own creative flow. It didnt always turn out as envisioned but l enjoyed it. It was all for fun!
my drone is basically my personal camera crew. with all the smart tracking they have you can get some awesome shots without even holding the controller
Bro you're honestly one of the best creators here on RUclips. There's something about your videos that just feels right. Loved what you did with this one! As a RUclipsr that films alone a lot, it was super interesting to hear your thoughts and advices about the process. Keep it up king!
From a very young age, I've been a very visual person. I was a traditional artist for many years before becoming a visual effects artist in 2004. Eventually, I worked on almost 40 feature films and 29 television shows. After the pandemic, I left the VFX industry as the work was too seasonal. Making a lot of money, and then burning through it during the "off season". But, I've always loved filmmaking. I shot my first feature film in 2019, in which I also had a small part in it. Since then, I've been writing short films centering on stories that had only one physical character - myself. Recently, I started shooting a web series with a friend who has also been an editor for features for 25 years. But, I'm always working on stories that I can shoot alone. That being said, I've watched a LOT of RUclips videos about filming by yourself. I've lost count of how many. But, believe it or not, your video is one of the only ones that emphasized how important composition is. Other videos mentioned shooting "different angles", but nothing about composition itself. You did mention that. Like you said, there is so much storytelling power in the composition of shots. So, I've decided to subscribe. Thanks for the inspiration.
The great ones inspire me - with Edgar Wright being my God - but you actually showed me how to do specific effects, some of which I'm planing to use in my projects, if I ever get to the point to actually bring them to life. Thanks for sharing.
Due to mental health reasons I'm very limited and I'm alone most of the time. I have many good friends as well as family supporting me but we all have different lives and due to my limitations it's hard to go out and do stuff I want to do especially with people. So to bring back my independence I started modeling for my shoots and such and then here came the idea of making my own films of me playing every character if there is more than one😳. Thank you for this video it's very inspiring and it's true, "limitations" really widen perspective and open up a lot of new possibilities people usually don't think of as well as basically a whole new world! Even though I'm limited I'm trying to make the best out of it! I love working with teams, but I cannot entirely do that without limiting the team in some way, in order to support me and make it accessible for me to contribute. Someday I believe I'll find a good team that I can work with who is willing to help me be there, but for right now I'm going to do my best on my own, at least I can save some of this independency💖💪🤗
Ahhh Jake!!! Blowing my mind! One of the reasons I love your channel is that I learn so much about solo broll just by watching your videos. Now with the explanation added… You’ve tipped the scales. I’ve been obsessing over the dutch angle lately. This foreground tip just pushed it to the next level. Even if you jacked it, super helpful. And the B Story is honestly exactly what I need for the video i’m working on. I don’t have a plan for the B-Roll that aligns with the topic so this is also super exciting… Man!… I can’t emphasize how good this is for me. So much value being emparted. So keen to give these tips a go
Okay, your video maybe 12 months old, but I wanted to say thanks. I'm new to RUclips video creation and by necessity have to film on my own. I've managed to gather a few accessories for my GoPro which are helping. Your info here has been a huge help and given me tons to think about to help get my videos to the next level (well at least the second step up a long ladder).
thank you for this! i especially love the dutch angle tip and the one where you placed the camera on the tree trunk. will try it out in my next travel vlog!
I'm trying to film a movie by myself at the moment. Something I've done is take a tripod/selfie stick with a gimbal attached to the end of it, and it allows me to track/truck with my feet and face pretty well. Also utilizing times of day to shoot, sunrise/sunset does wonders.
Great video. I'm sure other creators talk about this but I've never come across them. The video itself is a great example of the techniques Jake is talking about.

Brilliant Jake mate, I appreciate this video as I am in the same boat living in a town with a population of 9 people. I am in a small country town in outback country Western Australia - semi remote. Thank You & Marry Christmas. May 2023 be all that you want and more. Cheers

The intro was funny as hell. Great video since I'm stuck filming myself a lot. The notion of composition alone makes it worth it. I never thought about it.

I love how your videos still feel like a movie even when you're teaching us about filming. You're just on another level!
I must agree and I’m taking notes lol
You're a beast. Filming by yourself is sooooo frustrating. It's inspiring to see you laughing and having fun with it.
BRO THIS IS PURE GOLD! 🙌 I’m sure there are many takeouts from this but your storytelling is always a treat! Thx for the inspiration 🔥
Thanks so much dude I appreciate that!!

You are a very good actor, as well! The way you talk, the pauses in your voice etc.
Beautiful content , the lighting the story telling and everything else was flawless can't wait for more

Thanks for all the tips, Jake! Your videos are so so inspiring!
Love your videos. So many people made this video about filming yourself. Everybody tells the same. Yours is different. Thanks.
Great list of tips here! Love the shot outside of the van, I've used shots like that or even mounted on the hood of the car pointing back. Will have the try the Dutch angle sometime...
Cracking. Thanks Jake. Will be trying to tell some stories using these tips 🙏
The morning light coming through the windows in the intro looks amazing!
Red Rocks in the snow... Definitely on the list.
I totally saw Jessie Driftwood in the first shot! I used to watch his videos all the time.
Been watching your videos since your 2019 reflection. I can say that you're one of the best filmmaker youtuber out there. The chill atmosphere you give in your every videos are what makes you unique and great. Keep up 🔥
Your composition and color grade and style in general are absolutely lovely. Thanks for sharing your knowledge mate, I watch your videos with so much pleasure every time Jake, a feast for the eyes. Another great angle to add to the video and spice up the car scene is an internal profile shot with the camera mounted on the internal top handle to kinda simulate a pasaanger view of the driver. Aidin Robbins makes great ones.
Thanks for posting this! I've been trying to learn how to film myself and it has been such a struggle. I feel more encouraged now!
This was so helpful, thank you
This is really inspiring. I've struggled with self-filming for a long time (and trying to find my way around it), but this kinda makes it a bit more interesting.
I'm wanting to get into making videos, but I for sure have no one to film with. Can't wait to try these tips. Thank you Jake, i was overwhelmed by just thinking about solo filming. But this video gives me hope.
Thanks for this video. Please dont stop filming your self, you have great skils. I started filming my self and I would like to hear your comment abot videos
This video is really inspirational..I don’t really have ppl I can reach out to 😞...so seeing what I can do myself is nice 😌 I wanna create something.
Red Rocks is such a smart spot to demonstrate all of this!
Love this! Just starting a film channel and this is great advice, and packaged nicely in a story.
JAKE! Thank you!!! ive been having this fear of filming myself but ill take ur advice & just do it!!
I don't know how many times I have watched your first video on filming yourself! Thanks for this!
You're a real one, thanks dude!!
Just wanted to say thank you. This was a suggested video and wow. Thank you for being humble about filming by yourself.
Thanks for the tips! I loved how you break the conventions to keep challenging yourself!

Brilliant Jake mate, I appreciate this video as I am in the same boat living in a town with a population of 9 people. I am in a small country town in outback country Western Australia - semi remote. Thank You & Marry Christmas. May 2023 be all that you want and more. Cheers
Thank you for this bro. Been a director for over a decade and filmming myself always sucks. I’m so used to being behind the camera.
It was therapeutic to listen to you especially at the end!
The intro was funny as hell. Great video since I'm stuck filming myself a lot. The notion of composition alone makes it worth it. I never thought about it.
Came here to get tips and stumbled on a work of art. This is amazing man. Thanks for sharting.
