Our students debate this issue all the time. And we'll use some examples within the music business and music industry to explore the answer.

I absolutely do not feel connected to my favourite artist, they are irrelevant to me. I love their music and that is all, I couldnt care less about anything to do with their life as long as they keep making music I love.

You couldn't be more wrong about real music lovers. People who has much knowledge of music or being musicians themself don't care much about the social media side of music. We like music because we hear the greatness of a good melody and lyric, musicality and sound. What you focus on is the problem today and why everyone who knows music are totally disgusted by the monotony and unmusicality that are promoted today. Luckily, real music could still be found if you look beyond the stereotypes and fabricated tracks that terrorises radio channels today.

i disagree. when i find an artist i like, i will dig up every song they have and if they have social media, i'll check it out. if they have interviews, i'll go watch it. these things just reaffirm why i like their music or give me more reasons to want to support them.

This is the philosophy behind one hit wonders. Sometimes you just need that one genius song and things will fall into place.

One could also ask what is the purpose of the label in 2024, if they don't really invest in the artists anymore? They do still take a huge cut of the income of the artist, essentially meaning the artist pays a lot of money for something. A service. That service used to be promotion and branding, , but if nowadays it's the artist's job to do that as well, it kinda doesn't make sense to pay the label? On top of that, many labels handle their business horribly. They don't answer the messages of the artists they've signed, they aren't very open about what, if anything, they are actually doing and sometimes they don't even bother to mention the release on their social media channels. Often it feels that they kinda put themselves on a pedestal way above the artists, which I feel is a horrible idea in 2024. Especially if it's a small label that is often just one person who presses a button to upload the music on spotify and not much else.

Good video. It did, however, make me wonder what if the passion of the musician isn't cats or Star Wars, but the music itself? How does one market oneself in that case? And how do you make the audience feel connected, if there is no outside medium between the music and the audience? Like, if I had a cat and posted pics of it on IG, when people who like cats would feel connected to me and, presumably, would like my music more than they'd like it without the cat pics. But, I'm mostly passionate about the music itself and the few other interests I have are so niche that they're more likely to cause a disconnection than a connection. So, what could I do, if I want my brand to be "that guy who makes really good house music". Such a huge majority of the audience doesn't care about the details of the music making process itself, so making a post like " Here's a pic of my new microphone" or "In this video I'm clicking mouse buttons to create funny synth noises" won't cause anyone to feel connected, except perhaps a few fellow producers.
