  • NEW EDIT WITH ADDED MATERIAL -- In a series of clips, Jerry Lewis recounts what sparked off his decades-long feud with Bing Crosby -- which unfortunately was never resolved. The moral of the story is to forgive others while you're still alive. Don't hold onto grudges!

    Jerry Lewis, despite his comic talent, was not a nice man. He had a huge but fragile ego and could not accept any criticism or suggestion that he was in the wrong from anyone. He was to blame for breaking up with Dean Martin who himself was dignified through the whole business. What he did to Crosby at the telethon was a disgrace. Crosby was an older and much respected figure and to go for his hair when he knew he wore a toupee was disgusting. Someone should have punched Lewis out and then given money to charity! But Lewis had the cheek to say he never spoke to Crosby again! A sad little man really who undermined his talent by vain impulsive behaviour.

    Here is where Jerry Lewis contradicts himself. He tells one interviewer that he would not have pulled off Crosby's toupee while in another interview Lewis said he would have done exactly that if he had the opportunity. It's like Lewis claiming he initiated the break-up with Dean Martin. Martin told the BBC (in a rare interview) that he walked away from the partnership after ten years because he did not like the Hal Wallis movies with Lewis and was especially tired of Lewis' increasingly monopolizing the act.

    • @yG65gT6
      @yG65gT6 9 лет назад +31

      Mark,
      The fact is, Jerry Lewis would lie about as quick as Dom DeLuise would order a pizza. With everything on it.
      What's really funny is that our boy Jerry in talking to Bob Costas takes the part of the offended one. ... Offended that Bing Crosby would *possibly* think that he'd act like the no-talent, obnoxious slug that he is.
      Jerry Lewis just says the first thing that comes to his mind, and I imagine he's amazed that his "devoted fans" just lap it up.
      Now that Dean is dead Jerry gets the chance to portray himself in the duo as the dear, dear friend of Dean. ("Oh, we were such pals!") Pleeze! Can you imagine poor, *talented* Dean having to put up with such a no-talent as Jerry Lewis for all the years they were together.
      Running around the stage acting like a drooling spastic may appeal to people who, if they had a chance, would also sign up to be Moonies, but I doubt if "normal" people over the mental age of six can stand Jerry Lewis for more than 30 seconds.

    Allison Martino's IG post about her dad opening at Ciros Hollywood in 1952 and what Dean and Jerry did to him (tied him to a chair and went on instead of him) brought me here.
    Jerry really was full of himself and saw himself as top dog. Seems that some of the only people that liked him were some of the kids he helped through his annual telethon.

    Jerry Lewis was fine as long as his work was on film and had to pass through the hands of a skilled film editor. But live? Well, you know...

    Whether Lewis would have pulled Crosby's toupee off or not is beside the point. You can see he definitely manhandled his hair and it was all disheveled as a result. That could easily have been enough to expose his toupee to anyone close enough. I'm sure that's why Bing went off stage - to check that his hairpiece hadn't been partially dislodged and to make it presentable again. Whether Lewis would actually have ripped it completely off, the fact is he deliberately and very physically intimidated Bing with the prospect of being humiliated in front of a huge audience by having his hairpiece pulled off. It is commonplace now that Bing wore a piece, but many of his fans wouldn't have known that at the time.

    I love Jerry Lewis he was an enormous talent he was brilliant knew many people who worked with him. They all loved him and spoke highly of him. Crosby had a bad reputation. Beautiful voice I saw him interviewed by Barbara Walters he said that if his daughter lived with a man before she was married he would not speak to her since he was Catholic. Crosby had many affairs with women so I found it incredibly hypocritical. Jerry was a rising star Crosby was much much older and probably jealous.
    He was never the great talent Jerry was.

      If you refer to the abuse claims against Crosby with your comment- those against Bing Crosby have been successfully proven to be wrong by now. Crosby was an important figure in civil rights (look for example at all the things he did for Louis Armstrong or his friendships with such people like for example Anthony Quinn) and has sacrificed much of his personal happiness to WW2 work for the troops overseas. He helped so many people who desperately needed help. He built hospitals, orphanages, schools, churches, synagogues.... without "advertising" it. There is actually so much good he has done quietly without screaming around about the things that he did. He did it out of love and because of his heart. Not because he wanted his deeds to get recognition. To me, such selflessness is truly admirable.
