  • Chain of Command, Part II! The famous one about four lights. It's widely considered one of the best Star Trek episodes of all time, but surprisingly (or unsurprisingly?) the NST crew has some dissenting opinions. Interesting... how many lights did they truly see?

    Fun fact:
There's been a treaty against anti-personnel mines that's been signed by a lot of states, not the big ones like USA, Russia, India or China though.
So whenever a signatory country like Germany buys mines from the US, they have to make sure that every single one of them has a working detonator that only lets the mine explode when someone pushes a button, but not with some sort of automatic tripwire.

50:33 OMG WHY DIDN'T I THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE?!
Okay, so instead of just implying they had ghost-*****r in their custody and waiting to torture her if Picard didn't stay... They actually SHOWED they had her in custody. Not on a remote screen or something but actually walk in a gagged Beverly into the room for 10 seconds. Just enough to freak Picard out, enough to make him stay. Then, after that scene ends, it switched back to an over-the-shoulder panning shot off of Beverly, on the Enterprise during one of the briefings with Jellico.
That mind-****s Picard, and mind-**** us, the audience. And can even add moments of ptsd/paranoia tension when later, any inactions with Picard and Beverly, he sometimes gets to wondering if this is actually her or a Cardassian plant, agent infiltrating the ship?

Wow. You are /all/ wrong about the biggest lowkey horror in TNG. We all know one of the most horrifying episodes is "Galaxy's Child". This is a psychological-horror thriller as the usually-composed engineer falls into greater and greater depths of obsession for a new arrival he's gawked from a distance for years. So, regarding Jellico he becomes a recurring character in a series of books called New Frontier by Peter David where he is an admiral and acts as both antagonist and reasonable authority figure throughout the series. So you guys aren't the only ones who feel there's more to Jellico than what we see here.
Regarding the scene with Picard and Deanna at the end, Picard actually looks meaningfully at her before they go to the ready room, essentially non-verbally communicating "I need to fucking talk about this. Now." So I'm with Marvin that they give a nod to the fact that he's been traumatized and will need to unpack what happened. Given that it was the early 90's, having a hero acknowledge this and undergo therapy is actually pretty big, IMHO.
Can't wait to see your take on DS9. I think Ricardo is going to ultimately like Sisko more than he does Picard, but that's just a guess.

It's funny you're praising Jelleco because he's the source of the whole problem. Why has Picard been relieved of duty? Because the Cardassians played Jelleco by planting information that would cause starfleet to send this one specific captain into hostile territory. Why? Because the Cardassians knew Picard would become fleet leader if they went to war. And finally the big question, how did they know Picard would become fleet commander when Picard himself didn't know? It had to be a breakdown in Jelleco's chain of command because he's the "cardassian expert" placing him and his staff in contact with the Cardassians and he was one of the only people who knew about Picard's potential promotion to fleet commander.
To make it plain and simple Jelleco accidentally leaked vital strategic intelligence to a hostile foreign government, then failed to recognize a false flag operation, took over the enterprise, sent Picard to get captured in the neutral zone and tortured, had his butt saved by Riker after giving Riker nothing but contempt since meeting him and this is the guy we're supposed to believe has been right the whole time? Literally none of this would have happened if Jelleco was even half as competent as he has been made out to be but he literally failed on every single level and gets praised for it. I don't get it. He doesn't understand Cardassians and got completely fooled, the humans he works with can't stand him and he can't be trusted with top secret ultra classified documents. He's a total failure.

"Picard returns to command too quickly, that's sus..." (paraphrased)
    Ummmm, No he didn't.
If this episode were produced today, there would be text saying, "X weeks later." However, this was produced during a time when ppl didn't need those details spoon fed to them.
The show & common sense tell viewers that time has passed. Picard has to be cleaned up on Cardassia, then transported to the federation. Where he is treated for physical & mental injuries. Has at least 1 session (likely several) with the psychiatrist. Is then cleared for duty & transported back to the Enterprise. A trip that gives Deanna enough time to read the psychiatrist's notes.
So while we get a simple cut or commercial break, so much time has obviously passed. We didn't (and don't) need to see it. It's not a part of the story being told & the only have 45 minutes to tell the story.

Picard: "Yes, I know where to find you. And thank you, Diana - it's good to be back."
It's like 5 seconds of dialogue. We don't need an entire episode where he goes back to earth and fights with his elderly brother in the mud, again.
