I Bought a yellow light of death (YLoD) Playstation3 Fat ps3! Can I Fix it? PlayStation Repair Retro
The yellow light of death (YLoD) that indicates general breakdowns and issues on the PS3 Fat is infamous. ... This problem is generally caused by the PS3 overheating internally and melting the solder
Overheating is usually the culprit of motherboard failure, especially if has not been kept in a properly ventilated environment. The result? Cracked or melted solder joints between the motherboard and processors. Follow these steps to revive your PS3.
Heat the chips for 20-30 seconds each with a heat gun on low power, or a hair dryer for around 1 minute.
This video shows you everything you need to know about taking apart your Playstation3 Fat. If you need to replace the fan or the disk drive this video will show you how to get inside and disassemble your system. Since this system isn't the newest on the market anymore, it's cheaper to replace the parts yourself than it is to send them in for repairs.
Playstation 3 Yellow Light of Death (PS3 YLOD)
The PS3 YLOD (or yellow light of death) is when your beloved console shines or blinks a yellow light on its front end, indicating that something serious is wrong.
There are two lights that sit beside each other, but the one closest to the edge is the one we're talking about. When you see the yellow light (which may also flash red), you know something is wrong.
Your experience of the YLOD normally comes during intense gameplay when the whole console just freezes up, the game crashes, and you can do nothing to remedy the problem. Along with the console freeze, your Playstation 3 gives an audible alert that something is terribly wrong by giving a few short beeps.
You can fix the problem yourself using a phillips head screwdriver, a lint-free cloth, thermal paste, rubbing alcohol, and a heat gun capable of heating to 177ºC (350ºF). You could have the console working again in as fast as an hour. For step-by-step instructions, watch the video.
Place the ps3 motherboard on a flat heat resistive surface (kitchen worktop or melamine shelf will be fine).
Turn the heat gun on and set the temperature to 350 deg and the fan speed to low (to high and it will move the surface mount bits).
Allow gun to get up to temperature before continuing!!!!
Using a circular motion hold heat gun over areas outlined below (keep heat gun an inch above board/components at all times).
Dying Light 2 Care Package Unboxing [Ultra Rare]
CPU side first.
After 15 to 20 seconds move on to the next area.
Once all marked areas have been heated/reflowed on the motherboard LEAVE for at least 10 to 15 minutes to cool.
(DO NOT MOVE MOTHERBOARD WHILE COOLING)

I remember doing this heat gun and thermal paste repair job on my PS3 by following a youtube guide back in around 2008. It was something that felt way beyond my capabilities but I had nothing to lose attempting it. I was so damn proud of myself when the PS3 fired as normal. I was always worried about having it running for too long after that, but it kept me going until I got the slim version. The slim eventually developed issues too, usually disc drive related. The PS3 gen had terrible reliability problems.
My ultra slim has been alright
@@windowstips1430the ultra slim is the best version by far, cause the simplicity of the hardware.

I guess I was lucky since my PS3 never had issues. Even after a decade, it never acted up.
yea im trying to fix mine cuz of the yellow ring of death
Restoration eg your like one of the few actual legitimate restoration channels nice job
First time I’m catching one of these. I’m new here from the candy machine and went down the retrobrighting hole with your videos (as well as some other restorations). Just wanted to say thanks so much for making these high quality, relaxing and informative videos :)
I just got a launch PS3 for $30. Aside from the disc drive needing replacing, it works perfectly fine, which for a console from November of 2006 is incredible.
Not for a long time, gpu will fail eventually.
@@---777--- Not if you replace the thermal paste and stuff. Should be fine
Awesome job with the fix. Excellent video.😎
Using heat isn’t going to bring it back to life fully. It may be temporary but there’s no telling how long it could last. But most likely that issue is going to happen again. There is a diagnostic tool that you could purchase and it reads the syscon chip on the motherboard. Then it gives you error codes and that will tell you the issue. But considering this is a G01 and the temps get very high on this model I’d say that it’s probably the GPU solder bumps since the underfill was ment for lower temps but the PS3 worked the gpu like no tomorrow. The issue was eventually fixed in late 2008 with a higher temperature underfill. The underfill issue caused the solder bumps to crack under thermal stress so it might need a new gpu but it wouldn’t be worth it on this type of model
Edit: also when you didn’t fix the thermal pad it made me die inside
I've also heard that the NEC TOKIN chips near CPU and GPU might be responsible for the system's malfunction.
The fact he didn't removed the HDD before anything else, that right there I lost any hope
YLOD is usually caused by the nictoken capacitors, usually heat brings them back to life but not for long, like you said, there are replacements that are better than the nictokens
@@Cristian121212100 not for these older models. Yes they are the same exact caps between all the phats but the model that are the K01 and below have a bad underfill on the GPU ment for lower temperatures. The early phats usually get very hot too. The RSX usually fails because the solder bumps between the die and the substrate crack due to thermal stress. So yes it could still be the Nec Tokins but there’s no real way of telling unless they do a diagnostic test
Bingo! I sent mine to some gorilla mod place in MN; bought me about 6 months of use then that was it; bought a slim and was happy with it until the pos plastic casing would have some random rattling noise depending upon fan speeds… so after that I said F this, n built my first gaming pc n never looked back!
There’s also thermal paste under the IHS plates (the big metal plates that the thermal paste was on) it’s difficult to remove but replacing that paste would also exponentially help in keeping it even cooler too
I remember trying this on my PS3 and it made the temps higher because I think I bent the IHS lmao
I really agree with you, thanks for watching❤️
thanks for watching❤️
It does more harm than good, not worth the effort. See a lot of people do it to these but it’s really not necessary.
@@TKdoh on some older models it is. The gpu is actually pretty easy to do. Just take a flat head and pry up after you use a heat gun on it
I fixed my PS3 because of your instructions. Thank you Resto! Much love from Indiana.
How long did it go!?
Very satisfying watch. Always great when you see these old classic consoles brought back to life. Well done sir.
I'm surprised this system is thought of like that an old console to me is a colecovision, Magnavox Odyssey, Atari 2600, 1970s Pong 5 System, Intellivision, RCA Studio I and II, etc.
I wouldn't say PS3 is a classic quite yet, but it's definitely getting there.
Another top-notch repair of a video game console. Most excellent. 👍
Your videos are so relaxing and satisfying u.u
I remember back in 2009 having the YLOD and then Sony not apologising for their poor design for this console overheating. Bringing back nightmares but also nostalgia fixing it up with my dad 😆 needless to say i flogged it on ebay as spare parts and used the money to buy a slim line which i still have to this day! 🥳
the ylod is caused by several other things, not just overheating

you're the boss! Amazing video as always man! 😎😎😎
You're the best!, Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
Great video, very nice to watch, however as I'm sure many have told you in comments already - this isn't going to solve the issue.
The CPU and GPU are not at fault here, the issue has been mistaken to be the solder balls cracking or overheating for many years, but only a few years ago we discovered the real cause of the issue. The actual culprit was the low profile NEC Tokien capacitors, which are the pairs of black rectangles you see a pair of next to the CPU and GPU on either side. The problem is they slowly stop working over time, causing the YLOD. The reason we never discovered these were causing the fault was because applying heat to the CPU / GPU as you do in this video also heats up the NEC caps, which temporarily makes them work again from the heat - this caused people to misdiagnose the CPU/GPU to be at fault.
The real fix is actually relatively easy. :)
You heat up or scrape away at one or two of the NEC capacitors to remove them. Personally I recommend using a small knife and a soldering iron to destroy and melt away the capacitors, instead of using a heat gun to desolder them, since there is many tiny capacitors and components located nearby them.
Once removed, scratxh away at the board below to reveal the copper, since there is a large grounding plane around them, and then replacing each NEC cap with 4 tantalum capacitors at 470uf (iirc), soldered to the positive the capacitor used, and the revealed grounding plane.
After replacing one or all of the NEC caps with 4 tantalum caps, the PS3 will reliably work again :)
The best part is that this is a lasting fix, it won't stop working after 10 years or anything
T aurait une photo à nous montrer du remplacement des condensateur que tu parle. Sa m intéressé de réparer la mienne de façon sur.
No it depends per every console we can diagnose it by how long does it take to get the light. Heres a vid explaining it ruclips.net/video/UXrPN2mEriM/видео.html
These systems are so old when you take them apart the thermal paste is always dried up causing cpu gpu to overheat causing solder balls to crack underneath causing ylod sometimes I could be the nec tokin if you reflow the cpu gpu remove the heat spreaders put mx4 your console will be so quiet you will barely hear it
The Thermal Paste is the fault on some consoles like Xbox 360
@@BeinZilex replaced maybe but a reflow does the trick

Wow, I can't believe I watched the whole thing and was extremely satisfied
Awesome job, friend! Congrats!
Great job, I enjoyed it very much. I think I could take this apart but I could NEVER reassemble it. You may want to consider investing in a small air compressor and a small vacuum to blow out and suck up dust and dirt. It would make things so much easier for you. Thanks for the video!
Just a little word of advice, if you're ever to clean one of these again, I would suggest using a microfiber towel instead of a paintbrush on the top cover. The paintbrush has a high chance of creating normal scratches and micro scratches on the glossy plastic.
Agreed, that's exactly what I observed he makes mistake on cleaning it this way especially the plastic
Is it silly for me to say that those scratches can be restored? Like wasn’t there some spray and stuff you could buy back then to restore cd scratches?
Even if you do try to "fix" the scratches after they are there, they will never truly go away, you will just repolish the already scratched finished which most times will actually make it more visible. Your not wrong though, sometimes that can work but its not guaranteed.
This brush seems to be super soft

This has motivated me to pull out my old first gen PS3 Fat to get her back working
I heared there was drama with a refurb seller in canada not even opening up their devices. so I wanted to know what comes with refurbishing. so many great channels that do amazing work
This technique is common, but YLOD recurs quickly.
I also got several PS3s from discarded items at a hotel run by an acquaintance, so I repaired them many times, but in the end YLOD recurred.
After all, once YLOD occurs, the PS3's CPU and GPU contact surface tear is not easily cured.
Ótimo vídeo ❤❤
Que bom que você gostou! ❤️
This video recalls my memory of my old fat white ps3. It died of the same reason - triple "dood". I still keep it and I really hope I can send it to you for repair. Its just like it happened yesterday. 😢😢😢
I've had my PS3 stopped for years. I was told that the NEC Token capacitors also caused problems. I will try to fix it. Thanks for the tutorial.
thanks for watching❤️
Ylod was diagnosed wrong for all these years, maybe because of the 360 RROD (and that was diagnosed wrong too, it was not for a break connection between motherboard and GPU, but a break inside the GPU itself). The problem it’s not the gpu or cpu chips but probably one of the NEC capacitors gone bad. With reflow you just force this component to work, but the issue will appear again. And when it will happen, check for a short in these capacitors.
It still under testing, I bought 470uf / 6.3V Tantalum Capacitors, and I will replace the NEC capacitors if the issue (YLOD )will appear again again, Thanks for the tip!❤️
@@resEG PS3 uses 1200uf / 2.5v capacitors, you could put 4 400uf / 2.5v parallel capacitors
this was debunked tho
@@resEG can you do a video for the replacing I would be happy thanks
Nice work !!!
This reminds me of my childhood PS3. After years of love, it suffered the same fate (although instead of refusing to come on, it would just die randomly when in use. You can imagine the frustration). We knew how to fix it but didn't have the means to (and my dad doesn't feel comfortable with soldering anymore since his eyesight is bad at times), so whenever it got so bad we couldn't stand it, my dad and I would take it apart and put the motherboard in the oven. Not the most glamorous fix, but it worked for a while and we got some extra time out of it. We still have it somewhere and I've always hoped I'd be able to have the means to fix it c:
Big mistake ... There is also a paste under the RSX plate that needs to be replaced .... That's why the ps3 gets hot ..... You have to cut the plate and replace the paste there, it is the main cause of overheating
yes

this is not repair
great Restoration
Reheating the solder on the CPU and GPU isn't going to help, the real issue is the NEC capacitors (the flat black ones). They become slightly re-conditioned after the heat-gun treatment but the problem is going to come back. You need to replace the NEC capacitors with identical resistance and capacitance.
Didn’t someone discover that the capacitors was just one of the issues? I saw someone on RUclips reball something and I forget what it was- I don’t know enough about motherboards to remember lol. I’ve wanted to do this type of repair to my YLOD but I keep it for a rainy day when I want to try and fix it
3 or 4 470uF tantalum capacitors to be exact for each NEC.
It was just recently determined that those capacitors were not the cause of the YLOD they're totally fine to keep.
@@mikejonez724 Care to elaborate? I’m not gonna deny there could be other reasons for YLOD like bad solder points (some very early models had bad quality solder), but given the correlated result by replacing the capacitors it’s hard to argue against the methodology so I’m eager to hear the claim.
@@mikejonez724 10 to 20% could be NEC TOKINs. The majority is usually the RSX.
I did this twice to my 60gb PS3 years ago (reflowed). It's a temp fix, it won't last. The NEC Tokin capacitors are the main culprits. They need to be replaced for better quality, tantalum capacitors. Paste under the IHS also needs replaced. Both not an easy task. That's why my ps3 currently sits in a cupboard lol.
¡Me alegra que lo hayas disfrutado! ❤️
This. Reflowing should not be recommended as the first step anymore this is been proven a few years back. Reflowing doesn't "fix" them the majority of the time. It just temporarily rejuvenates the NEC capacitors. The real permanent fix is to just replace the capacitors and not to reflow the chips unless absolutely necessary.
@@jeffescortlx ya try telling that to the people who think it's a cracked solder joint that needs reflowed 😂 they're gonna die on that hill. they think that since reflowing it "works" that it must be one of the bga joints and couldn't possibly be anything else. I've got an A01 delidded with LM applied to the dies and am waiting til I need to replace a cap to replace a cap.
@@cheeryos116 your not kidding. In my own video I have people commenting that it's only failed caps like 2% of the time and that it's a myth that the NEC's fail commonly. In a video where I literally only replace the Caps without a reflow and it fixed YLOD.
@@jeffescortlx Yep, it's 100% the NEC's. Toshiba laptops failed because of them as well.
Won't last long doing this. Should have Delidded the RSX cover and the other cover, re-apply thermal paste and boom you just gave this ps3 5+ years of life
