I've recently added a few tools to the toolbelt that should help with the more finicky board issues I run into. I'm having to play catch-up with electrical circuits classes I took in engineering school, but it's fun to learn as I go. Thanks for being patient with me. Hopefully we can see more fixes in the near future! Several computers are in the queue. If you live in the Orlando, FL area and would like me to (potentially) fix your system for free, send me a tweet @gregsalazaryt 👍
Loving the new series and it'd be cool to see you dive more into microelectronics/circuits!
can u fix my rx 5600xt :( it turns on but no display and i cant afford another card i live in texas but i can ship it as well?
Greg, can you share your wallpaper?
Oh yeah, you're an engineer by trade and education right? I can't wait to see Salazar Repair Group to form haha.
Not sure why, but my comment seems to have been auto deleted. Basically I said to try cooking it in the oven to see if it re-solders everything. Even with corrosion it can still work. There are guides of people doing this so I suggest looking at those to determine how hot and for how long. At this point there is nothing to lose since the board isn't working.
* rotting motherboard *
Nope. There's no corrosion at all.
The comment by him killed me while the cortosion Was even visible be ore at the clamp, not to mention the viel we had while he said it
yeah you can see the liquid spill area still

I'd be more inclined to think it's cat pee. The 'spray' pattern looks like, whatever it was, it came in from the side vents.
@@richardrussell7082 cat pee usually reeks, especially if left on a hot surface. i imagine the owner would smell it even before opening it
That's probably not to far off. About a year ago, I had a buddy over and we had a couple drinks. He was sitting next to my computer and went to get up and dropped hit drink all over the front of my computer case. It splashed all over the inside of my computer. Thankfully, no damage was done. But damn was it hard getting all that sticky crap off everything. So drinks spilling inside electronics is not to far from the realm of possibility and it may not even be the owners fault.
Me: Looking at all there corrosion

I think I was being a bit too optimistic hahah.

When the fan spun you should've plugged the hard drive into to the board to see if it would boot. Consoles need a hard drive in them to fully power on otherwise it will turn off like it did.

@@iLLusiveMan82 Are you talking about, placing the word: This, before the word consoles?
@@iLLusiveMan82 But looking at state of board... that console is dead. Even safety hazzard.
@@alesksander Yeah probably but before cleaning it didn't spin the fan and after cleaning it was spinning the fan so there was some sign of trying to boot. This unit looks as if it was resting on or near concrete. Concrete or cinder blocks give off a ton of moisture.
A basement in many townhomes and apartments would do it. Ive seen it many times from friends of mine in the city. People have their game room / man cave or whatever in that basement, "finished" or not, if not sealed and done 100% the right way you end up with this moisture and humidity in the air that rots these things like nobodys business.
I'd agree, if not for the top of the fan. It's definitely a spill of something sticky and (fatally) conductive.
@@kcocgibkcusuoy I doubt the sticky fan substance was a major part of the issue. Also, if the person was a smoker, the residue mixed with moisture could easily be a brown gummy mess. But if you look at 14:14 that is more of a corrosion issue than a substance one.
@@bullzeyez3236 I'm saying it's an indicator of cause. I've dealt with smoker's machines, and stuff does get everywhere, but considering that the intake port is on the top of the machine, and the corrosion is worse near the rear of the machine, I'd bet that it was a spill. If it were strictly smoke, that substance would be literally everywhere - but there was standing dust so I'm saying that's probably not the case. Regardless: RIP to an OG.
@@joshuabuers3528 All possibilities . Im more convinced the cause is from constant moisture , not one spill and the possible smokers residue has little or less to do with the malfunction. One spill would not cause all the corrosion we see.
It was fairly obvious as soon as I saw the PCB that there was some kind of liquid damage. I'm wondering how long it kept working after it was soaked
"It's a bit disassembled" 😂
This is a dope series. I think PC enthusiasts can enjoy watching general electronic repairs. A lot of diagnoses and skills are transposable across platforms. Also, the magnifying camera is cool as hell. Wish more content creators used them.
Now I wanna see a cross over between Greg Salazar and Louis Rossman. I am sure he could fix this... though how much it would cost for Louis to fix this would be interesting to know. Would it be lower to fix, than the cost to buy a new console.?
It probally would be more cost effective to purchase another vs fixing that one. Unless you want to test your skills and get another donor board to "borrow" parts from to fix. Then (pending on cost of the parts) it may be a good thing to attempt a at home fix.
"Would it be lower to fix, than the cost to buy a new console.?"
No, unless he knows exactly what is wrong with it in the first place and its a quick fix.
Tronicfix would be a good cross over.
Louis is more Apple than console
@@wesss9353 Laptop than console.
it's definitely fixable. there are numerous RUclips professional hardware technicians who would be able to fix this. They will have donor boards and parts on hand, so the cost effective answer would be either to simply replace the board and keep the old board or its valueable components, or to fix the existing board. Hope that helps!
P.S.: Tronicfix is a good shout. He may well be willing to collab.
Greg, you have some incredible troubleshooting skills. I just found your channel and would love to see some soldering skills shown in some of these. Hopefully, I'll come across some eventually. This video is only the 4th or 5th one I've watched. Figured I'd catch up on the Fix or Flop series before checking out some of your others. I've been troubleshooting and repairing electronics since before you were born and you're teaching me a few things. One thing I'm severely lacking in is soldering skill. I learned troubleshooting in the nuclear Navy at the tail end of the Cold War in the 80s and 90s so I usually blow most people away with figuring things out. Keep up the great work!
4:17 A corroded XClamp mount.... 4:58 Greg :"I don't see any corrosion.."
Not sure if ya remember my comment on a previous video but got an update to that. Got my rig up and running like a champ. Ended up being a faulty card. Being that it was new and still well within my warrenty I sent it back with a RMA and got another new card that runs great and has fixed the problem. I love this new series! Also, i really loved the idea of modding comsoles, i.e. adding a Noctua fan, an ssd, and maybe a 120 ml rad, reservoir and pump 😄
Love to see it, thanks for this series it's dope!
I like this series of videos because it'll likely to encourage people to try fixing hardware issues as opposed to just tossing stuff and moving on. Sometimes a little bit of effort can save a lot of money.
"I don't see any corrosion."
Well, one of us needs new glasses. Actually, I need new glasses either way so probably both.
I assume the fan is set to blow out to try and keep the dirty and dust out. I greatly enjoy the channel, thanks for being here.
Yeah, makes sense. Forgot there weren't dust filters up top. Probably along the sides.
Makes me curious if the fan would improve performance, or if there is anyway to Frankenstein more ram, or add an AIO to a console.. I dont have the ability to make that happen but it would be neat to see.
Cool seeing somebody whos a PC tech engineer work on a console for a change.

I love this video i used to fix xbox one launch consoles just like this one for a company 5 years ago . I do want to note the console through Firmware is Married to the disk drive and hard drive so in order for the console to boot up and not auto shutdown everything needs to be plugged in before boot . Of course this board is severerly liquid damaged and you made the right call to trash it. Keep up the Science and Knowledge focused videos!!
Hey Elijah! Thanks for mentioning the HDD. I wasn't sure if it was needed, so I reconnected it during one of the troubleshooting phases to rule it out.

Another piece of advice: turn the board on for a while. If a spot on the board gets unreasonably hot, there is likely a short there.
That being said, I wouldn't bother with this board seeing so much corrosion. There is likely a short also somewhere between the internal layers as well, given how corroded the holes for the cooler brace were.

As soon as I saw how moldy and rusted those screws were on the clamp I knew it was water damaged lol. When he said there's no corrosion I was like "???" haha
The lack of thermal paste in the APU is because it pumped out (search for it in "Mangos Tech Corner" channel @Mangos Tech Corner, he made a pretty neat animation on how the paste behaves and why it pumps out) Pretty normal behavior with bad silicone based pastes. One that doesn't have this issue is the Hydronaut from Thermal Grizzly.
Which is what should be used for direct die applications.
Another great paste that doesn't suffer much of pumpout is the GC-Extreme from Gelid.
Yep. We use Hydronaut and Kryonaut for this very reason.
@@GregSalazar No, Kryonaut is the one to avoid from Thermal Grizzly since it has way too much silicone in it!
Even der8auer tell us to avoid it for die applications. Just stick to Hydronaut.
Shame that the console was in such a dire state! Poor thing.
Good start to the series regardless! Can't wait for more, Greg!
Um, please link your source. If it's a tweet from Roman, just link that. I've talked with him quite a bit and he's never raised this concern. In my testing Kryonaut for direct die applications is perfectly fine.
When you’re using your screwdriver to pry something and you’re worried about damaging the pcb chuck your plastic tool under to pry off off, or a thin plastic cutting board to get better leverage and protection from slipping.

So just a tip: use an old toothbrush and make a paste out of baking soda and distilled water, scrub everything down, rinse with di (it's non conductive) then pour rubbing alcohol to dry the water. You can bake with low heat to help dry faster.
Also you have a hot air reflow gun, you can set that to like 200°c and spot dry stuff.
It'll come out shiny. Might not work, but it'll look great.
My guess on that thing is a bad mosfet not getting a gate signal.
Or maybe they won't post without a connected drive?
8:16 that exhale..! We all felt that!
Even the heat pipes had corrosion! Oh man.... that Xbox was played when he was in a hot tub.
oh man, you should really consider going back to the "Science Studio" name. This series rocks!
Pre-heat your oven to 200 °C ( 392 °F ).
Set up a tray with aluminum foil over it. Make aluminum foil supports and place the motherboard on the supports on the aluminum on the tray.
Supports on the aluminum, on the tray. Motherboard on the supports, on the aluminum, on the tray.
Place the board in the oven for 7 to 14 minutes.
Open the oven and turn it off, let the board cool off by it's own before moving.
Check to see if homemade reflow worked.
"dont see any corrosion"
You were being so polite/optimistic. You even gave the owner an out with the "salty air" comment haha
It made me smile when you put the good pc grade fan in the original xbox😂
9:34 that reminds me of the dead GPU thing, where you "bake" or apply heat to the GPU for it to temporarily work again, though it's not exactly a fix.
Reflow is the word and that might work
I wish you could collab with tronicsfix on videos like these! That guy is a monster at fixing everything it seems!
The owner never respected the console, was the reason it gave up on him
100%. "gee willikers, Idk what happened.. It just stopped working.."
he shouldn't have dropped his beer on it.
I've actually got a PS4 about 3 weeks ago from a customer for free... Apparently his kid rage quit and chucked it out the front door. The dad said he kinda slid it out. No idea if it even turns on, just the bare console. No power cord, etc. I know it'll at least need disassembled to clean out the pieces of shattered CD. A chance the hard drive is dead but no big deal... Anyway haven't had the time to work on it yet.
Also, if I'm ever able to head down your way I might stop by and say Sup. If that's OK of course (not that I have your address lol)... Don't go to Florida much (I'm in north GA) but if I do you and a couple of friends I know down there would be in the list lol..
Holy shit no way you got into micro soldering too man! That’s another new RUclipsr to watch! I remember the first video I watched from you when you bought a lot of Apple products to try the eco system lol 😄🥳
I could tell that this had liquid damage when you pulled the metal cage out of the plastic shell. You can see rust on the metal cage just as you're pulling it out which is a very good sign of liquid damage. When you showed the bottom you can definitely tell there that it was not water that caused the damage as that looks like possibly salt water that had dried, or as you pointed out, pop as it was sticky.
The liquid damage was super evident once you showed you pulling off the X Clamp. You can see the corrosion on the clamp itself and then the oxidation on the copper traces around the edge of the board. The oxidized copper on the heat sink itself is a great sign this was wet.
Overall, I liked the effort you put into getting this to somewhat turn on. I would have given up as soon as I saw the corrosion, assuming that it was liquid damage and not just a dirty device (I've seen what smoking will do to PCs and IMO it doesn't look like that). Definitely going to thumbs up for the Noctua fan. I love those things.
Pro tip for you with dirty SMD components like this, get a kids electric toothbrush and a couple spare heads! The bristles are super soft and the motion is gentle as anything but it perfectly cleans (in combination with IPA) SMD stuff without risking removing anything or knocking anything off! I've been doing it for years and it's honestly saved me weeks worth of time!
It's a shame, but as you said, it's too far gone to make it worth it. Even with a sonic clean and re-flow it probably wouldn't hold up long with such fluctuations in the resistances I saw on the MM. Deffo looks like acid damage which would indicate a soda/energy drink, and that could also have caused the traces in between the PCB layers to get "eaten" away a bit too as it was left so long.
Do have to add though, I'm not totally sure about the X-box, but the PS3 and any HD capable device there after would have to have ALL devices hocked up to work. The HDCP security layer has to detect all the HDCP devices and check the encrypted key, or it will shut down the console to protect the "copyright protected" media. 👍
In this pandemic and GPU shortage, people like you are god sent repairing and teaching people to pro-long their tech, its even good for the environment..

When i saw it the first thing i thought was some kind of water damage. It probably is better to just buy a replacement board if you have to. I doubt the ghetto reflow with the hairdryer you mentioned is worth it. These are cool vids to watch though keep them coming.
If the reflow was done properly with the proper tools it could be worth the whole 5-10 minutes it’d take to do it. As someone who’s worked on electrics for 3 years now, I don’t know I’d take the “ghetto route” for this one though. Maybe if it wasn’t somebody else’s system.

The instant I saw that corrosion at the back of the board and the heatsink backplate I knew that it was going to be a goner considering how much corrosion there was and even just a few traces being screwed can make something not work, especially worse since they were near the APU
I was totally confused at first when you said, you couldn't really see any corrosion when I could have seen it from the moon LOL. it's all good. I just found it a bit odd and then at the end, I was wondering if you had a microscope and was going to offer to send you one and then out of nowhere, in the end you are looking though a microscope silly boy...
Anyway, just picking on you no Biggy, I like your channel even though I'm fairly new to it, I think your doing great, keep up the good works.
When I saw that board, it looked to me like liquid had been spilled into it, which would make sense because the typical user would be a teen male. The word "careless" is usually attached to that group. I know, because I was one.
I believe many soft drinks contain sorbic acid, which might contribute to erosion of contacts and such. Combine that with heat generated by the components and electricity, and it equals a bad outcome for electronics.
Honestly, I'd just get a Series S if they want to go the budget replacement route (and not go through the nightmare of finding a PS5 All digital)
sonys consoles are made so much better though. Check out the corrosion issues the 360/One have been known for. Yes this is a particularly bad case, but they are well documented to have rotting form the inside out issues.

Greg, can you do a video on a ssd upgrade for xbox ones? Aswell as the re imaging process if any. Love the content, thank you!
I do think Xbox is designed better than most Playstation consoles for heat but as far as overall design Sony made the right call with the shielding on both sides of the motherboard.. I did one a few months ago for a customer who was scared to death to turn it on after it got wet and she put it in the closet for a year. I opened it up to see rust all over the metal shielding... the motherboard was completely fine!! Cleaned that bad boy up and changed the thermal paste and it worked like brand new! Hey @Greg Salazar, what headset/headphone do you have in the background?
When you decide to clean your console by taking it into the bath with you.
Now the question becomes whether the owner was aware of when this water damage occured. Maybe they witnessed it or caused it and felt lucky it kept working for some time until it finally died. Oooor perhaps a family member/friend accidently spilled something on it without them knowing & now they're in for a surprise at the findings.
Theoretically you can find a bunch of broken components and try to fix them. Infinite flop loop
You should definitely invest in a ultrasonic cleaner. Let the Isopropyl alcohol and vibrations do the deep cleaning for you, much better than one can with Q tips.
My friend was playing league of legends drunk and spilled a bunch of rum n coke on the keyboard of his laptop. I told him to shut it off right away, not after the match. He just wiped the excess liquid with his hand while tilting it and used papee towels to dry up the keys. He kept playing, he didndt want to lose his ranked match. 3 minutes later the laptop shut down forever. He was freaking furious, blaming me for not stopping him because apparently you have to be a Pc nerd like me to understand that computers and drinks dont go together...
i recently fixed some broken 360s and ps3s. It was kind of a blast. If you ever have the opportunity, do it. Pretty fun
I like the console videos as well, keep them coming.
Yeah those motherboards (and the og 360's) are actually known for corrosion in that way. It may not even be that it wasnt cared for terribly well but just that it was in the wrong humidity for too long. That Mobo is definitely rotted from the inside out. A major risk in buying older xboxs sadly. They were not built as well as their Sony brethren.
