Rear Axle Refurbishment On The Abandoned Tri 5 Chevy Build!

- So, I cut the rear axle out of the abandoned Tri 5 Chevy. I disassembled the axle, cleaned all the parts & painted everything using original factory colors. This 1956 Chevy project car is coming along great.

That's one of my dream cars.😮
I saw a ‘56 chev on the road today and reminded me I hadn’t seen an update from you in awhile. Then I check in and a new video. Great to see you back at it. The chev will be great when it’s back on the road.
Believe me I'm workin' on it. Thanks for watching the video.
I love your dry humor and your 56 Chevy keep the video's coming! By the way the real oven cleaner, not the low budget cleaner, works very well to clean the old grease and oil from parts, try it, just a word of advice.
That’s good to hear. Videos are coming!
Thank you for this video. I own a 1955 Canadian Pontiac and need to replace mi axle bearings and you have helped me a lot. Great information my friend.
1955 Canadian Pontiac #freemansgarage
I agree on the red oxide. I did the same thing with the red oxide primer for 1 of my 55s ,my pumpkin is a 1963 and I found a 1964 posi for it and also a used set of 336 gears. it's not a strong rear end but it fits right in.
You got a good combo & it works. A posi might be in my cars rear ends future but for now I just want it on the road.
Have you decided on a power plant yet? It would help in deciding what to do with the rear end!
I have a couple of mild 350s that run at my North Dakota location. I might use one of those.
you could unbolt the springs on the shocks and install them on new shocks. my 55 had 411 gears because it was overdrive
I’ll have to do that. Overdrive makes sense.
I just acquired a 1955 Nomad that was also a factory overdrive car (3-speed manual). The original motor and transmission are long gone. In their place will be a 327, Power Glide and something other than the 4.11 gears that probably still in the rear.
Would love to have you work on my 56 Nomad. Nice job; love your humor.
That'd be neat. Thank you for the nice comment.
With the 1955 written on the bottom of the third member, it may have also been an early production 56. A few years ago, I found a website where you can look up your vin to see the exact day it was manufactured. I have an early production 57 that came with a 56 date coded 265 original engine. During the year swap transition, they would grab some of the leftover prior year parts.
That does make sense. I couldn't imagine GM back then not using what they have. I'll have to search for that website. Thanks for mentioning it.
You found spiders in the..... spider gears?
It all makes sense
I had a 2dr post in the mid 70s! BBC,bigcam, T400 stall! Posi. Front tires would lift! I know that’s not what you’re looking to do! Maybe a nice 283 stroked would tickle your fancy
I would love to lift the front tires! But right now, I just want to drive the car. I've got a couple mild 350's sitting around so one of those might find their way in there. Things can be changed over time. I am not building this car once & calling it done. A stroke 283 does sound good.
always check the spider gears especially the two that the axles go into if they are worn replace them or it as when they flop the axle moves around as well and does a number on the axle berrings this can also cause a clunk in rear axle when starting and stopping
DD Speedshop would agree with u 👏👍🇨🇦
Awesome
Why didn't you check the gear ratios when you had it apart.(divided pinion gear into the ring gear.?? )
I could have. I was also going to do it by turning the tire before taking it apart but it slipped my mind. But we do need to confirm what’s in there. Thanks for reminding me.
That is a 4:11 tag. They came in different shapes (the tags) and, depending on the shape it represented the particular gear ratio. Your tag is the 4:11 shape.
That’s right.
The date code on the 3rd member housing is 56. June 18, 1956.
Awesome thanks! Is the F 56?
@@freemansgarage .
F is the alpha month (6th letter of the alphabet) June; 18 is the day; 6 is for 1956 year.
Thanks I appreciate that.
Tech tip of the day: everything is a hammer if you use it wrong enough
That is true
How about that Red Oxide?
Hey Axl Rose long time no see
Too long
The shape of the tag indicates its a 4:11 ratio rear end. Per a google box search, I'm not that smart.....
It’s more than likely 4:11 then. Thanks for Google searching.
I don't think you can describe the smell of gear oil , I don't know why it has to be that bad .
That's funny.
@@freemansgarage Nice car . Back in the '60's my cousin used to flip '55's ,before he got drafted ,came back and bought a really nice '64 Falcon Sprint . I've wanted a '55 forever ,but it never happened .
That’s a neat story. Thanks for sharing it. I’m actually really lucky to have my ‘56. Right time, right place & unbelievable deal.
'56 bail air.
It’s a 210 Club Coupe/Del Ray
I was just joking bud since there was so much "bailing wire".
Oh wow that went right over my head. I read "bel air" not "bail air". That's funny.
@@freemansgarage all good lol.
Just found this account...who abondons a 56 that is that clean ?
A guy who retired, sold everything & bought a lake cabin with the wife.
