You’re not just a gladiator, you are the entire colosseum.
Directly stolen comment
@@noonelaughed6598 so?
@@noonelaughed6598 it’s a fucking meme it’s not that big of a deal
Your are the entire circus
Or you are the entire CIRCUS!!
When played in this tone, it really does sound like the military march it was intended to be.
People are talking about how good the song is and I’m thinking about how I thought Fucik was the f word
@@jhova lol u watched this about 40 min ago and im watching rn
Same
It's not a song.
@TechSamsung TS Of course we know: It's simply a march and not meant to be sung in any way. It's not (unlike some other marches) derived from a song.
SAMEEEEEE
Absolutely PERFECT tempo, not over the top, played as some circus band might play it. This is EXCELLENT! BRAVO for The Marine Band !
SpeedyNeutrino172 the marine band is the best!
True
120 to the half note played in cut time. had to play it in flute choir! it was very fun.
Well, it's a tad bit faster than the original 120bpm March, but I personally like it
I absolutely agree. I played it on trombone in college in '88 or so, and my director had us practice it at about ~144; he got over-exited at the concert and directed it at ~156. I had to double-tongue the 2nd strain, which takes the bite that you hear in this excellent recording out of it. This mistake is quite common when this march and _The Stars and Stripes Forever_ are played too fast. by Dunning-Kruger bands.
Curiously, my tongue is faster at 58 now than it was at 21 then, and I can put a lot of precision into it instead of just hanging on.
One of the most underrated marches ever written. It’s truly a gem!
Julius Fucik: “It is an epic piece of melody that will evoke what it was like when the Roman gladiators entered the arena of the Colosseum, the bloody combats in front of the emperor who with a thumb decides if the defeated gladiator lives or dies and the execution of christians that was apparently the halftime show” (And the reason why a Pope ordered that these Roman coliseums must be preserved in some way instead of being demolished and managed to survive to this day)
P.T. Barnum: Yeaaaaaahhh... whatever, Take this whole fistful of dollars for the rights of your tune. I'll make a few slight changes but believe me that people will remember it for all that you said about gladiators and stuff...
Many years later:
Julius Fucik: What the Fucik?
It was more like "man, I just made a really cool march for fun with a lot of chromatic stuff in it. There's so much chromatic stuff that I almost felt like naming it 'The Chromatic March'. Actually, I think gladiators are really cool, so I'll just name it after them", but I still find it funny how the song changed like that
Fascinating that the Pope would keep these monuments to such things up. History must not be erased, as to not be forgotten.
Imagine walking into a gladiator arena, expecting to die a horrible, painful death to some opposing gladiator with a giant battle axe and then some dude plays this
🤣🤣🤣
Clown act ain't it? punk... (I'm just kidding lol)
No gladiator used an axe
It was a circus
and you're apart of the grand act.
The parts 1:20 to the end of the piece are really underrated
YES FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT
So prettt
*pretty lmao
@@GwensFlixs The melody is so sentimental it’s crazy
I believe this melody (the "trio" section, or third theme) is the one about which no less than Johannes Brahms himself, upon hearing it, remarked "I wish I'd thought of that".
This music always makes me smile i don't know why
Maybe cuz ITS CLOWN MUSIC THESE DAYS! 🤡🤡🤡
@@joel784 I read this with clown voice 🤡😂🤣
@@nurrich i BADLY wanna hear that
Julius Fucik would surely be pleased to hear his march played so well!
I go straight to the Madagascar scene with Marty in this song!!!
"Entrance of the Gladiators" or "Entry of the Gladiators" (Czech: Vjezd gladiátorů, German: Einzug der Gladiatoren) is a military march composed in 1897 by the Czech composer Julius Fučík. He originally titled it "Grande Marche Chromatique," reflecting the use of chromatic scales throughout the piece, but changed the title based on his personal interest in the Roman Empire.
I can't believe nobody in this comment section has mentioned the trombone/tuba soli at 0:43. Virtuosity at its finest
That section is one of the main reason this march doesn't get played more...there aren't a lot of bands which have low brass sections that can play it cleanly.
@@kurthoesly890 Haha yeah imagine having a brass section that can actually tongue properly lol
@@Josie-fb2kd this comment vs my orchestra in 2019
@@Josie-fb2kd I feel like it’s less the players and more the synchronisation. For example, if someone tongues, another player might tongue a bit early or late resulting in an ‘unclean’ run. Also moving a big chunk of brass isn’t very easy.
To just up and disrespect the Euphonium like that.
Anybody else find it weird that we associate this tune with clowns throwing budgets glitter and elephants balancing on beach balls and not what the title actually implies, i.e. guys hacking each other to pieces in front of bloodthirsty crowds?
Heck, the "circuses" in "bread and circuses" was actually referring to the latter!
It is, but some music just is like that. Like "Yakety Sax" is an incredible piece and extremely difficult to play but we just think it as a haha funny tune.
if I was a composer I'd be thrilled that my music had stood the test of time and was still being played, even if was known as clown music.
Ummm.... anyone who has played the low brass line in the 2nd strain likens it more to violence than clowns, let me assure you!
Couldn't agree more! Tempo is just right. I hate when groups play marches way too fast!!! MM=120!!!!
It's a circus march. They're made to be played faster, unless it's too fast for the group to play well. Most of the time it comes off as a cluster-fuck.
@@excalibur1812 No, it's a military march. It was just taken up by circuses and that's where most people know it from these days.
@@excalibur1812 The version of this most of us are used to hearing is a faster-tempo, higher-notes rearrangement of the original military march, repurposed for circuses.
@@Donleecartoons I realize that. I have been a professional musician for 41 years and have played under some of the world-famous band directors, including William D. Revelli, Frederick Fennell, Leonard B. Smith, Colonel John Buergois, long-time director of the U.S. marine band. I had great band directors growing up and have played with the Heights Concert Band since 1979. Our conductor was a former military band director and I live in Killeen, Texas, home to Fort Hood. I grew up in a military band environment.
Unless the march in question is Rolling Thunder, in which case it should be played about 4 bpm faster than what the trombone section is comfortable with
Ok am I the only one who noticed the tuba that dropped an octave at 0:58? It’s already hard enough to play that as written and they played it practically perfect with clarity and direction. That’s why this is the best military band in the U.S.
It sounds so good when they do
I mean theres only one military in the US
@@DragonHuman00 He said "military band." There's multiple
@@AlcerusOfficial no there's only one military

@@christiannicholas just hearing that title makes me shiver oh gosh
It was apparently written because chromatic brass instruments had just been invented and was original called something like grand march chromatique before fucik took a trip to Rome

Most people think of this as being the circus theme, but man does this really sound so a march.

Alternate title for that song is "Thunder and Blazes"
Robbins Mitchell That was the title of the marching band arrangement. The original title was to be "La Grande Marche Chromatique" as much of it was written in the chromatic scale. Fucik retitled it later to reflect his interest in ancient Rome.
The piece is actually really good especially the second and third sequences are just beautiful.
What a very appropriate theme tune for the current Big Man.

Who arranged this version/transcription of entry of the gladiators?
Probably one of the staff arrangers of the MCB. They are amazing. But, this version sounds almost identical to the standard marching arrangement we played when we were kids in high school band. Our director loved the classic marches from the circuses and Sousa, Fucik, King.
