Because of Dr. Jenkin’s experience, I chose to buy a Magnuson supercharger for my 2019. This may be a first for a Whipple product but I’m glad that you reported your experience.
I've had nothing but trouble out of my 2.9 Whipple, from the tensioner going bad eating up belts to the whole damn thing needing a rebuild to having to have a customized reservoir tank made. Trouble nothing but.
I installed a 2.9 Whipple on a 5th gen Camaro it ran well for 4000 miles before the supercharger unit itself started having a mechanical issue. Whipple's customer support is a joke they seem to think they are above questioning and that their shit doesn't stink. I would never consider using one of their products again
After the 4th issue, (the actual rod that spins the compressors snapped) Whipple rebuilt the supercharger. I haven’t reinstalled it though. Car has been without issue since I removed the supercharger.
Im sorry to here that, i have a 2013zl1 after having a 19ss1le, i miss the 6th gen Chasis, but i love boost, what did you go with? Zero power adder or another brand?
Is that a 6 rib belt? Mine is 8 rib, on a Lightning setup, and it came with a little spacer you could use to get your belt to ride properly, if needed it goes behind the upper pulley.
I believe it was an 8 rib belt. The pulley was installed by Whipple's recommended tech twice during warranty repair and it kept failing. Later the rod that spins the compressors snapped. I had to remove the entire unit and send it in to Whipple. They rebuilt the entire unit but I have not reinstalled it in nearly two years. the car has been issue free without the Whipple. Clearly my unit was a lemon.
@@dr.michaels.jenkinsjr.9233 Drive shaft for the blower itself snapped? Somethings funky that should never happen I sure hope this time its ironed out and trouble free. IE is a long way from Del Rey. (In Hemet).
Long story made short: The belt tensioner failed three times, then the supercharger pulley bolts broke. Each time it was repaired by Whipple's guy. The supercharger shaft broke, then Whipple rebuilt the whole unit. It's been over a year and its still sitting in the box. I doubt I'l have it reinstalled. No issues at all from the car since removing the supercharger. I think an out-of-spec shaft was the issued all along. Hard to tell, hard to prove. I simply had a lemon unit. I'll never purchase another Whipple product. Even though they "fixed it" each time, dealing with them was not a pleasurable experience. They should have owned up to the fact that every now and then a unit is just a dud and replaced the whole thing.
@@dr.michaels.jenkinsjr.9233honest just sounds like a bad supercharger, whipple has been on thousands of cars for almost a century and they have always been the best of the best.

Belt shredding is an alignment issue. Go up in rib and make sure its aligned. Seen same issue with vortec. Fixed alignment and bracing and trouble went away. Homemade brackets. And their tech support really sucked.
Sorry to hear this. I have a 2.9ltr whipple rear feed on my Daily driver installed in 2012 and been running great, I had it stripped down and all seals replaced in 2022 and runs like new. Only other issue was belt slip which I just throw a new belt on and the problem was solved.
I’ve never heard of issues like this with whipple. I wonder if any of it has to do with the install. I have a whipple and thousands of people have them and don’t hear about these issues. Sucks to hear you had problems.
Every mfr will have a certain % of units that have a problem no getting around it. They rebuilt his hopefully its right. Wondered about the install too. Had to be alignment, too much tension, something
It's hard for me to grasp that this is z mechanical parts issue and not an installation issue. So you're saying Whipple techs did the third install? Tell them to put a 10 rib system on it.
Whipple techs did the install twice under warranty and it still failed. Later the rod that spins the compressors snapped. What is so hard to believe about a unit being a lemon? It happens.
This dude is hilarious! Blaming the supercharger for obvious over tightening of the belt! Whipple send you a billet tensioner with a gauge on it and keep it at 100lbs pressure it won't kill the pulleys and belt! That fluid you're complaining about is from running it hot after your belt came off!! Whipple simply makes the best product! Any time I had an issue they overnighted me the part! Start trashing your mechanic with all that education lol!
Sounds like a belt alignement issue Wether one uses old V belts or serpentine they gotta be on the money or they will self destruct fast Sucks not being able to trust your car though. IE here also marina del rey is a nice change of scenery, lol
Take a look at what are the common factors in your setup. For example, you are blaming whipple for some reason. Are you getting the same shop to fix it everytime, same mechanic? After watching some vids on installing whipple on L's engines it appears the belt tensioner is not just a simple bolt on part like the oem is. Perhaps the installer is simply mixing the various bolts, nuts and spacers up. Having been a mechanic since 1975 I can tell you that a lot of mechanics may glance through instructions initially, but will not go back to the guide unless they think they screwed up. You obviously have a belt alignment issue or perhaps locktite was not used. If this was a design issue it would impact a high percentage of customers.
It wasn't belt slip. the pulley snapped off twice. Later the rod that spins the compressor broke. I think the rod was out of spec all along which caused all the other issues.
