4 things you need- 1. A stitching needle (slightly heavy for gravity) 2. Any tape, make sure the thread is about a inch over the cord then just tape it, make the tape pointy at the threads end, so it slides super easy into the pole hole. 3. Thread (Thread the needle, thread needs to be 4-5 inches longer than the pole) 4. Paper clip or better still if you have a second person to help, hold the cord as it tenses I just did this today and worked wonders. No metal end on it? Our tent is 40 years old and we cant get the ends off. Trying some penetrating oil now...lol. We may just cut the ends off and tie them like you did, BUT, I worry about the cord giving out fast being exposed to the elements?
I had the same problem. I ended up heating the (aluminum) pole with a torch. I was able to remove the tip but the aluminum cracked and is no longer usable. I ordered new end sections from TentPole Technologies with new tips. Each 18" section was $3.40.

@@edwardjski We were very lucky...they came lose after just a little heat being applied with a heat gun.
