Great video on how to make a simple lactic acid toner. Although I've been doing my own skin care line for awhile now and have a good cosmetics back ground, I don't do videos (not my thing, I'm kind of shy on camera, lol!), I do enjoy watching you making skin care products! I always look forward to you uploading your videos
Thanks for this video. Btw, if you have a beer making supply store nearby you can usually buy 88% lactic acid there for a good price. I also shop from the Making Cosmetics store, but it's always nice to know when you can buy something locally without having to pay for shipping.
Hey Tara! Great video...what happens if the lye solution exceeds more than the water you took out as it will go over the formulation of 100 percent...will it be classed as a fail item or is there a way to combat and save the formula? Your advice would be greatly appreciated...Thanks Hun! Xo
Hi Tara ! Amazing video, I've been following you for months now and I love your content. I do have a question: One of the videos, you mentioned that Leucidal SF complete in toners is not the best option. Is it different for this case?
Hey Tara! I love your videos, they are inspiring and informative! Can you tell me the difference between Leucidal SF Complete and Leucidal SF Max? I am sensitive to coconut oil as it breaks my face out. Is there another just as effective antimicrobial I can use in place of Leucidal SF Complete?
Hi Tara! I don’t really understand how you calculated the percentage of lactic acid that goes into your toner, do you mind explaining? How did you convert the 88% into 5%?
Since this is not a 100% concentration, what you'll need to do is: 100 - 88 = 12 (water content) 12 x 0.05 = 0.6 + 5% = 5.6% It always depends on what concentration you have, if you have the powder, because it's purity is 100% 5g is 5% but if you have the liquid version like this, always do the math in 100%, if you have 70% concentration of lactic acid, get the 5% of the 30 (water content) then multiply by 0.05 = 1.5 + 5% = 6.5%. don't be confused, it is still 5 percent but since it is already diluted with water, the water content should be added to the computation, in total you need 6.5ml of the solution if you have the solution of 70% lactic and 30% water
Hi Tara. Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you can help me figure out how you got 5.6 percent of lactic acid as I would like to create a lactic acid solution with 20%. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.
Hi I’m not sure if this makes sense but I’m wanting to make a glycolic acid and salicylic acid peel. I already have a 10% salicylic acid and a 30% glycolic acid. How would i mix these two to make one glysol peel?
Also, btw, check out the article "Study Raises Questions About Leucidal Safety" and the follow up "The Leucidal Liquid Debate Continues" on Lastics Body. Canadian researchers showed that this preservative doesn't contain what the manufacturers claim it does.
Thanks so much for sharing. I'm not sure what the article you referred to is discussing, as I haven't looked at it yet, but I have talked about my distrust in leucidal sf complete as the sole preservative in products in my more recent videos. This is a pretty old video of mine.
It is not recommended to make sunscreens at home since there is no way you can technically test it. In order to say a sunscreen actually works you have to have it lab tested, which is far to expensive. So I don't ever plan on making a homemade sunscreen on my channel.
You can definitely make a glycolic wash at home, but here is my opinion on it. I feel that using an expensive ingredient like glycolic acid in a face wash is a waste since you are washing the product off of your face. When you use glycolic acid in a leave on product the product remains on your skin until you wash your face again. So I personally feel like you aren't really getting the benefits from glycolic acid if you use it in a face wash. I do see glycolic acid face washes on the market & you can definitely make them at home. Maybe I will make one here on my channel some day :)
How did you figure your concentration amount I want to make my glycolic toner 10% and have a 99.5% concentration glycolic powder/crystal. I mean it's almost 100% tech but to precise on the cosmetic world of formulating we need to be 100% accurate.
You have to raise the ph or else you will burn and irritate your skin. The lactic acid drops the ph down to 1 which is far to acidic. So the ph has to be brought up to 3.5-4 in order for it to not burn or harm the skin. You could also use triethanolamine to raise the ph
Thank you very much for your video!!! I was wondering if it's possible to add to the toner other principles and extracts, in order to enhance the moisturising and peeling effects (e.g. pomegranate extract, hamamelis extract, essential oils and so on...). Is it possible to do that? And in which face of the production would you introduced these ingredients? Thx a lot :)
you can definitely incorporate more ingredients. I just wanted to show a simple recipe, but you can always add more beneficial ingredients :) I personally wouldn't add essential oils because essential oils can be irritating to the face and since you are already using an irritating product it may enhance the irritations. If you do decide to use essential oil you will need a solubilizer so the essential oil is distributed through out the whole product. if not the essential oil will just settle on the top and you will have to shake it each time you use it, which isn't to big of a deal. just thought I would mention it. I would add the extracts before you add the lactic acid.
Hey girl what up 🤪🤪🤪🤣i love it u know I love and I watch ur videos later...I'm working that's why I'm nanny imagine 🤪🤪🤩🤩💝💝💝bendiciones Linda bye gracias
It’s so much easier to just tell people to google it instead of trying to be a math teacher. It’s hard for people to even grasp the concept of formulating in percents, let alone explaining to them to move the decimal over two places.
@ time code-> 1:00 Girls, not to be fear-mongering, but remember TaraLee isn't a dermatologist. A LOT of dermatologists recommends the everyday use of an spf30+ as the BEST anti-aging product out there, they even recommend it if you aren't looking for anti-aging benefits. Even when you aren't using AHA's or BHA's.
YES!!! wearing a sunscreen is definitely the best anti-aging product! It won't necessarily reverse any wrinkles, but it definitely helps prevent any. & it is definitely recommended to wear sunscreen everyday. I just wanted to express how extra important it is to wear sunscreen when using AHA. & yes, I'm not a dermatologist or esthetician. Everything I know and share is just self taught.
I agree, using a spf is important to use every day. However there is no reason to be fearful of using lactic acid on your skin. It has been used for a thousand years in the form of milk to improve the skins texture. Long before we had spf to protect our skin! So in my opinion you are causing unneeded fear. I am not a dermatologist, but I am a cosmetologist with a degree specializing in skin care. We are talking a small dose of lactic acid hear, in most people this is a good starting point to start exfoliating your skin.

so is it possible to mix lactic acid & AHA fruit complex together? would I have to reduce the amounts of both?
Please can you do a video on using lactic acid body cream? In which phase should we use the lactic acid and at which percentage for dry aging skin

Can I replace it with 5% Glycoli acid
Could you say how you worked out that 5.6% Lactic acid?

Amazing information x
glad you enjoyed the information :)
thanks for watching!
But those last 3.38g of water could change again the ph of the solution. And you didn't check the ph at the end 🥺🥺 help please
I know it’s late, but from my understanding since the water is distilled it doesn’t alter the pH level.
@@CatherineMarie distilled water takes on the pH of the product at that moment, so you’re right.

How do you calculate the lactic acid?
Hi tara i would be thankful if you help me . The oh of the toner is low at 1.9 i don’t know why it’s that low what can i do to buffer the ph
Use a lye solution to raise the pH
Can liquid germal be used as a preservative on this one?
Yes plz
Is there any way to calculate the ph beforehand?
No you need to take the ph every time you make it just to be safe.
I know, I just figured having a good idea of how much buffer I need before hand would be easier.
How to make the shelf life extended for two years???

What is the math that you used to come up with the 5.6% lactic acid requirement from your diluted lactic acid?
Anya Thomas (.88)x = (.05)(60g) >> .88x = 3g >> x=3g/.88 >> x= 3.41g and 3.41g / 60 g = 5.68g
C1V1 = C2V2 formula
