  • Alright, it's been a pretty tough choice. DLX vs LX. Which one did I pick for VO and why?

    The Great Mic Quest can drive one insane. And it never ends. For myself, I need an audio therapist.

    The LX definitely hit the sweet spot with your intimate voice versus the DLX. As you say, definitely tighter. Good stuff Mark

    There was no doubt that the lx would be what you chose it's great on your voice... the intimacy is just killer.

      There is something about it I haven’t really found in other mics. It’s the LX’s superpower.

    Absolutely, 100% agree! Work
    needs to get done. For me, DLX. The beauty with sphere, you and can save presets till your heart is content.

    I gave up stressing over the choice once i realised that i would try and eq the LX to sound warmer like the DLX but then I'd eq the DLX to sound tight like the LX... I bought the LX in the end, knowing that only a bit of the money i saved will buy the Ocean Way mic collection (and also the missing models that come with the DLX) plus leave change for some extra plug ins!.

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Год назад

      Exactly! I really think the LX is "Bang for your buck" champ of the year so far. It's not like you're only getting 2/3 the mic the DLX is.

    I knew. It!!!! Haha! The LX would have been my choice for VO after all your vids on the two of them. High end: To my ears, it actually tops the DLX for what you do. The Brauner/103 combo is definitely the endgame sound. I’m considering it for my next place. The DLX is great, but the LX is proof in the pudding. And, to my paranoid, skeptical ear, the LX VM1/103 on is easily your best choice. The Soyuz and Butterstick are still shoulder to shoulder with it, but for your j-o-b, I haven’t heard a more sure bet than this combo in this video. Well done! Now, grab a shot, a tall, cold one, and celebrate! Or a quad shot of caffeine… Hell, all of them. Sounds good today, actually. So: Headed downtown.

      Thanks Jeff! I feel exhausted after all this Sphere wrangling, but I really leaned a lot in the process. It really confirms how it’s all made up of the sum of so many different variables. I’m happy to have finally come to a conclusion, but then again… LOL

    Good decision on the LX. I use the DLX for more than just VO.. I have the 416 for that and it's still unbeatable. But when the 2nd talent comes in, I will turn onto the L22 and then add some color for the vocalists in the booth.

    Yo good sir, I know this may run contrary to opinion, (or maybe not what you want to hear) but from the close-up video and today's, I notice a brightness in the tone on the LX that feels a bit too much for me. I was relieved to hear dissipate when you worked the DLX close. However, I thought the LX sounded great in those earlier videos - maybe it does come down to how close you're working them. It also may be my ear, but I tend to prefer something like the Soyuz or butterstick on your voice - that 'neumann-esque low mid-range warmth - vs. something super-duper detailed in the highs (it's why a CK-12 style capsule isn't my first choice for my voice, either). It also may be how it's configured - I wonder if the TLM/Brauner, which are both brighter mics, could be swapped for something else for super-close miced vocals. Just some random thoughts (keep up the great videos too!).

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Год назад +2

      It’s a very valid observation. What were you listening back on? I do agree it’s a bit less midrangey than I’m used to, but something is working with this that I can’t deny, but I do feel compelled to really find out more. Thanks!

    As an owner of two L22s (I also do music stuff in addition to VO) you’ve got me wondering if I need to buy an LX now. I enjoy the diffuse, airy sound of the L22/DLX for some things, but that LX sure seems to have a bit of an edge for VO. On the other hand, maybe that edge is what my 416 is for, and the DLX is where I should turn for longer form/character stuff. I think I see where this is heading. Microphone purchases are forever in my future.

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Год назад

      I’d say no, but they really are two very different mics. I don’t know if UA even appreciates the differences. So, I can’t talk you out of it because it makes perfect sense, especially because you’re not just buying another sphere. You’re buying a super mic that does this one thing (VO) better.

    LX would be far better on acoustic guitars as well I’m guessing. Acoustic recorded through the sphere l22/dlx sounds very hollow to my ear.

    I can not get a good sound from the lx. Breaking my mind. It pops on certain letters and vowels. Bad mouth noises amplified. I try backing off if it but then I hear the room. I feel like there’s allot of noise in the mic signal. The mic just doesn’t sound like yours at all. Your mic sounds creamy and smooth. Mine sounds harsh and digital. Idk what to do.

      Often, condenser mics this sensitive can be problematic in a space that has lots of exposed wall area. Those iso shields unfortunately don’t fix enough in a reflective too.
