Four Amazing Historical and Curious Finds in Scarborough
Join me as i take a look at 4 historical and lesser known features that Scarborough has to offer.
We begin at the Olivers Mount War Memorial, towering over the seaside town of Scarborough since the 1920s and surrounded by the famous race track too.
We then take a look at a once important railway asset to the town, the portal of Falsgrave Tunnel. Once the start of the attractive former railway through to Whitby closed in 1965 and the tunnel closed in 1981.
Next up is a comical name Hairy Bobs Rock or Cave. Situated on the North Bay of Scarborough overlooked by the dominant Scarborough Castle.
Finally we head South to a Funicular Cliff Railway at the Scarborough Spa where we take a little look at a short 5 meter tunnel below the tracks that was out of use since 1973 and reopened an 2022

A great video of my birth place, just before British Rail closed the Scarborough, Whitby railway line, several schools in Scarborough had the chance to go on a train journey up to Whitby. I was one of the lucky ones who went on this trip a great day out, until one of the boys opened a carriage door while the train was moving. Sainsbury’s superstore is on the land of the BR Goods yard land , where the three wheeler Scammel lorries moved all the goods around.

Ant thanks for the memories, I just remember family holidays at Scarborough in the early 1950's. Halcyon days, I'm sure my parents had worries about our wonderful country back then but nothing compared to today! We really did enjoy ourselves. I must say your video production skills are second to none. Keep up the brilliant work. PS, the seat on platform one at the station which you walked past is believed to be the longest in the world.

Great video Ant brought back memories of two family I had there in 78 and 86. I remember standing by that signal box with Dad as an even year old train spotting on a very busy summer Saturday in 78. I lost my Dad a year ago today but this brought back some happy memories for me on what is a sad day. Thank you Ant for all you do it truly is amazing what you show in your videos.

Just a bit extra for you… I grew up being told that Hairy Bob worked on the Royal Albert Drive construction and when he sat to have his lunch on his own, he’d chip away at the rock, but the road was finished (or some say he died on the job) before he could finish the second window. When the council put the skate-park in, it was named “Royal Albert Skate-Park” but they had to change it by popular demand to “Hair Bob’s Skate-Park”.
The railway platform you filmed actually has what is considered the longest railway bench in England, you can see it at the beginning of your footage on the platform.
    Again thank you

That subway under Marine Drive is still there - but when they did the sea defences, it got covered up - and the other side that used to be next to a putting green was filled with rubble. I used to use it to get onto the beach - that was in the 1980s. I think it was late 1990s that it was sealed up. There was a brick ramp/road into the tunnel and the base was cobble stones. I always thought it looked a bit like a lifeboat launch under the road.

Brilliant video Ant. I walked through Falsgrave tunnel in 1988 during my BR driver training but the other end had a grille over. The track hadn't been lifted long and the former Gallows Close yard was used as a car park
Incidently the yard was for freight traffic and the carriage sidings were a bit further on towards whitby at Northstead
    Cheers Russ

Another fascinating video! I used to live in Scarborough, so recognised lots of things. I remember Falsgrave tunnel very well and travelled the line to Whitby many times.
At Peasholm park there used to be something resembling a ski chair lift - what happened to it?

  • @paulsre
    @paulsre Год назад

Falsgrave tunnel was not retained in use for carriage sidings. It was used for access to Gallows Close goods yard, which remained open for light goods traffic until 1985 (not 1981). What you point out in the map during the video is not carriage sidings but the goods yard. The carriage sidings were further on at Northstead and were as far as I know lifted when the line to Whitby was closed. After that time a short spur of the former Whitby line was retained for shunting purposes to the goods yard which ended with buffer stops by the bridge at Woodland Ravine.

I went in the old railway tunnel, before the site was built on when they built Safeway (now Sainsburies), in the mid-1980s. Was a single track back then leading to a goods storage yard on the site of Sainsburies. The track used to carry on for about half a mile along the old track bed behind manor road. Lived up on the cliff above Hairy Bobs Cave - used to play around there a lot during my school days.
