Really enjoyed this video...what stunning ponies. I found it really interesting and informative. I hope you do more and more of these videos in the future. It is a fascinating process to watch and I hope most of them go on to find happy homes and live long healthy lives. Thanks for posting and sharing x
Thank you for your feed back, I know the day is very stressful but to see them at there new homes the next day gives such a lovely feeling. And yes I hope to do lots more. Thank you
You'd be very surprised with how many are being bought for children's riding ponys, unfortunately the price wasn't quite as high as we'd like but you can't have it all, the fact they go to loving homes is great and we do get updates on the dartmoor hill pony facebook page with how they are getting on
I'm not sure why this video popped up on my home page but I'm so glad it did. What beautiful ponies. What breed are they? I think I am going to enjoy your channel.
What a slice of rural Devon. Thank you for sharing it with us. How old are these ponies? Would they have spend their entire lives up to this point with their herd up on the moor, or have they been brought down before?
Thank you, Our foals would have spent their whole life with their herd until the day or two after gathering when we ween them off the mares. They would be roughly 6-7 months old, if we get anything younger, we run on for either breading or for the next sale as they'd be a bit too young to be weened at that point. Any foals we select to keep for breeding also stay in to be branded so we can easily identify, and then go back out with their herd 🙂
@@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm Aw, poor things. A rough time for them, to be sure. Although I know it can't happen for all of them, I hope as many as possible go to good homes with people who will care for them and train them up when they're old enough...or at least let them be pasture pals for some other horse. Thanks so much for answering my questions!
My last comment was removed as it didn't fit the image but it's still the same...Sadly many of these ponies will go to foriegn meat markets or for pet food.....Sorry, but it's the truth...I live on Dartmoor.....
These pony's go to new homes, I'd appreciate you having your facts correct before giving incorrect information. we are trying to keep the dartmoor pony alive on the moor. If you live on dartmoor, you should understand that.
So this year we have a 2nd and 3rd sale. This 1st sale was for 2year old foals the 2nd sale is for older ponys and if space foals that either didn't make it into the 1st sale or didn't sell, than anything that doesn't sell or didn't make it in will go into the 3rd sale which is a online sale. These pony's make great children pony's and we try to ensure they all go to nice homes, but like anything in market or auction you don't actually know. There is a dartmoor pony Facebook page where some buys do post about their pony's and its lovely to see them in their new home. We also sell privately
@michellegeary5536 we have a lovely lady who will take any unsold foals if they are not wanted and she get them quite and sells them on later. so there is many ways we try and keep them away from just being slaughter and get them to loving homes
It goes on in a small town call chagford in Devon, happens every year in October - this year they are holding 2 physical sales (12th Oct & 2nd Nov) and 1 online sale in December. I will find the website and put the link below the description later this evening 🙂
Hi, sorry it took me a moment to translate your message. Yes they are beautiful, the average price at this sale for the Dartmoor breed was i think around 200gines but I'm not 100% on that but that's what it would be close too
@kathleen7498 I've watched this sale several times, it's the sane in any horse auction, none are hurt, granted they are unsettled. They become wonderful ruding/driving ponies by this time next year. There will always be Karen's who know better... ..
I don't like to think about it, I hope non but the reality of that is low. luckly we do get update of some that go to home for kids which is lovely too see
No, as far as I'm aware most if not all go to loving homes and we have a Facebook page for dartmoor hill ponys where new owners post and ita lovely to see them. The whole point of the sale is for them to avoid the meat market and go to loving homes and have good lives that way we can keep the dartmoor hill pony breeding on the moors, without the sale sadly the moorland breeding would die out, and we don't want that .
Thank you. Is was along time ago when I lived at Bow, we used to visit Chagford to go go on to the moors, swim in the outdoor pool and sometimes watch sheep, or ponies being brought off the moor for sale. About 50 years ago so it’s goo to things have changed for the better.@@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm

You're welcome, thank you for watching
Lovely to see real rural England, still alive. Praise God!
We want to keep the breed alive so the sale must aswell 😊

It's a great to see the variety of colors. It,s a good mix of sizes as well. I would love to 12 of them to bring colour to our area. Ontario Canada.
That's would be amazing, we did look into sending some over as my auntie lives in Canada
I believe it would be very costly. What part of Canada does your aunt live?
@margaretporkolab7166 yes sadly it is, she's in calgary, Olds 🙂
Wow these are beautiful
Thank you!
They make lovely riding pony.
Yes they do
Lovely ponies🎉 I may source from your location next year.
That would be great, I'll make sure I post the dates nice and early
Brisk sales of ponies.
Always good to see the variety in skin marking / colour for the best price.
Stay safe and well.
Tat-Tar.
Hope they hav e gone to nice homes.
Yes we do get update from some on the dartmoor pony facebook page which is so nice to see
Nice to the traditions carrying on but at these prices most must be going to the factory

Dartmoor Hill Ponies
One little medicine hat pony (considered magical by native Americans)
I’ve just brought him from the person who got him at the Sales. I’ve named him Barnaby. ☺️

Do they still sadly get sold to Europe for slaughter like they used to?

They go to the zoo I'd imagine

Are the spotted ones P.O.A'S? Beautiful ponies.❤
The spotted ones are registered British spotted pony Society
Dreadful prices . even sheep fetch more

Thank you for your support, we've had update on ponys sold becoming brilliant children ponys 🥰
Sadly, that's how it is, but we try our best to do what we can to keep them running on Dartmoor
How many went for meat
I don't like to think about it, I hope non but the reality of that is low. luckly we do get update of some that go to home for kids which is lovely too see
Who buys these tiny horses and what do they do with them?
Don't know, most go to home with small children or even just for other pony company but honestly I couldn't say as I don't know
Yes, how many go for meat ? That question has not been answered.
I wouldn't be able to give you a number. But a lot less go for meat now than they used too thankfully.

How frightening for these ponies to be corralled in. I feel for them, this is cruel.
Oh shut up
Them ponies are well taken care of way better than what your dog is I bet your dog is miserable because you're forcing it vegan diet

Are you a child? Silly comment.
Are these ponies being sold for meat?
Stupid
No, they go to loving homes. There is a Facebook page for buyers who post lovely photos and videos of the ponys in new homes
Better not kill any of them, if humans do this, it is disgusting. These ponies deserve life, not death. Respect the animal kingdom.
The whole point they go to market is to go to lovely homes most go for children's riding ponys. It is a stressful day as any market but when you seen them the next day at their new homes its worth it.

Cherry you obliviously know nothing about horses or ponies at all
Why would you aells your super foals for between 40.and 80 gns they are goinf to the meat man and to the zoo horrific
We put a reserve on our foals at sale to ensure they make enough to go to happy homes
