Flying the Made in China Jet - ARJ21-700!

- A special flight on the Chinese made ARJ21-700 on Chengdu Airlines from Chengdu to Linfen and back. Check out the interior of the Chinese made ARJ21. Watch the takeoff and landing performance of ARJ21. Enjoy commentary from the crew and myself about the ARJ21.
Join me for an incredible sight-seeing trip to Hukou waterfall in China, which flows quickly and forcefully into the Yellow river. I take an internal flight within China from Chengdu Shuangliu international airport, which is the major international airport that serves Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese province Sichuan, to Linfen Qiaoli airport in Shanxi aboard the first ever aeroplane made in China, the ARJ21.
I use Chengdu airlines but there are another two airlines which make use of the ARJ21 aeroplane - Urumqi Air and the Mongolian Genghis Khan airlines.
The placing of the engine right at the rear of the aeroplane makes our seat at the back very noisy and one of the major disadvantages of flying on the ARJ21 is the general noisiness and din overall; even sitting at the front, it’s hard to ignore the sound of the heavily labouring engine! It’s also frustrating that the ARJ21-700 has to fly so low as this makes the aeroplane vulnerable to the weather. As I hear in my interview with the captain, the ARJ21 is not able to fly in heavy rain!
This aeroplane is not certified by either the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), however, the larger, more able C919 jet is beginning to gain popularity in China, as the captain tells me, and this can only be a good thing, since the C919 is able to carry many more passengers (the ARJ21 is limited to only 90 passengers, which is a problem in a country with more than a billion people in it!) and also more cargo.
The ARJ21 jet was commissioned by the Chinese government in 2002 and the first aeroplane entered service in 2015 with Chengdu airlines. It is a twin engine, regional get which is made by the Chinese company Comac. ARJ itself stands for: Advanced Regional Jet.
After being given the emergency information (I am seated with extra leg room in a seat by the emergency door, but the price I have to pay is that I get extra safety tuition and am in charge of opening the emergency door for other passengers - I’d best pay attention!), I’m up in the air. The food could be better - I initially go for the congee but it’s so bland that I switch to the chicken noodles. There is an unexpected bonus though - a free breakfast with yummy red bean paste bread, a Chinese delicacy.
The sight of Hukou waterfall itself is astonishing - keep watching to the end to see it in all its glory. I feel that I had a very enjoyable day out and, as a further bonus, I was able to enjoy a number of the hi-tech comforts at Linfen airport before taking my flight home, including automatic massage seats and even a karaoke booth!
Who knew that China could be so scenic? Let me know what you thought of the whole trip on the ARJ21 aeroplane in the comments section down below and, as always, thanks for watching!
Sam Chui is probably the guy on the plane you want at the emergency door.

I don't know why everybody started screaming copycat when they see "China" label on it. True that they could have done in past, but in this recent era they are much more advanced and have a good RD team for almost all industry. Irony is few countries are not even able to copy and still they accuse Chinese. Remember if you are enjoying any electronic device at an affordable price then that is because of China. China got my full respect on that front.
Chinese are innovators of a different flavor than Western nations. They have significant contributions to society, both historically and contemporarily.
how can this plane be copycat like boeing? it didn't crash
Well said Bro
@@yiweichan1014 ... Boeing was making Airplanes when most of China was on bicycle . If one of these Chinese made planes crashed this soon after going into service , it would be a Disaster for the Chinese manufacturer . LOL
It looks a lot like a MD-80 series, that's why. Nearly identical!
What a beautiful plane ✈️👍 the wing is just too low and that makes the view out of the window even better 🤗 great job China 🇨🇳 Greetings from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
Fun fact: the ARJ was HEAVILY inspired by the McDonnell Douglas DC9, which is why the cockpit and over all design of the ARJ resembles said aircraft (it was even made from the same tooling equipment as the MD95)
because MD-80s and 90s were produced under license in China so they used this familiar design as a testbed for their domestic logistics and integration
I actually genuinely agree with you and finally some one who l found in the comment section that actually has a functioning brain for once and this world actually genuinely needs more people actually like you in this world and you actually couldn't have said that actually any better than me @@yeungscs
Great work by China. At least their endeavour to come out of the dependence on world's leading aircraft manufacturing companies is worthy of appreciation.
It is? There are strong signs this is yet another example of China stealing IP from ages ago. This is configured suspiciously similarly to the MD-80, which China licensed to build locally decades ago. Also, the engine is a General Electric CF-34. This plane wouldn't even remotely exist without the west.

the landing was so smooth.
Short domestic flight on a tiny airplane comes with complimentary hot meal service in china, meanwhile airlines in the US serves you a packet of peanuts on a 5 hour flight.
Henry Chan yeah but I hear the pay out is quite nice should you ever find yourself being forcibly extracted from your seat
They don’t even serve peanuts anymore. Only sodas , juices , and water . They won’t even give you a can of soda .

I thought the cabin crew was very friendly and welcoming and the meal service was very nice for what seemed a short flight. Apart from the noise at the back of the plane the take-offs and landings were smoothly executed. I admire your very positive, helpful attitude Sam and you always enjoy the experience rather than criticise and try to find faults. Thank you.
Yah very smooth indeed
Yup Sam have positive vibes!.
Former DC9-30 then MD-87 then MD-95 then B-717 to ARJ21 50 years later ! wow ! the most long life aircraft ever !
The aircraft won't find many customers in the west, but they are already building a better plane, as the captain said... You have to start somewhere! And thanks for not making the music too loud and not speeding up take-off and approach too much.
I think I have paid for that plane with all the Chinese carry outs I’ve bought over the years....
Hard to say as Westerners are also humans. When money and operating cost concerns humans have a tendency to consider when fiddling with the wallet in the pocket.
Kind of amazing that Chengdu is becoming more known by the multitudes like how you've now started the arj21 featuring there! Great as always Sam, your passion ain't dying anytime soon.

I absolutely love T-tail planes! One of my favorites are the Fokker 100. Back when I was a kid, during several times in a year the office my father worked for chartered these from a local airline to take employees for recreation or business trips. Last time I checked them they sold all of their Fokker 100s and are no longer in contract with the company now.
My least favorite would be the MD80, boarding them from the back was a nightmare for kid me. Also one of them crashed into a cemetery near my town's airport. It became an urban legend, even they paid local shamans to "cleanse" the airport grounds.
China has done a remarkable job in making a passenger plane on its own !!!
I don't know about the plane tech but I do know a lot about the tech for China's high speed rail and it is basically Western and Japanese. Drives me completely mad when I hear Chinese being super proud/egotistical about how they supposedly have better train tech than the Japanese because they are running at higher speed in regular operation. They don't. The Japanese are just more cautious which is why they have never killed a single passenger (suicides don't count) in over half a century. I even met railway people who should have known far better than most but had swallowed their own Kool-Aid about the train tech.
I am no expert on it but I have talked with car engineers in China and how much is copied on some Chinese cars is also ridiculous (unlike the trains with no licensing or purchase of parts).
more than 90% of it is western made. engines and all electronics

Just like European cooperation (Airbus Aviation Industry) among Germany France Britain Italy Spain etc; in my humble opinion, there should be Asian cooperation Aviation Industry, among nations such as, China Japan Korea Taiwan Singapore etc.

It is recommended that airlines distribute BOSE noise-cancelling headphones to the passengers in the last 4 rows.
It's fine, the engines are not big at all. RJ100 has 4 jet engines right beside cabin (2 for each side) and is welcome by airlines for being quiet.
Who doesn’t like to hear the epic jet engine..
and then the last 4 rows(minimum) will have increased ticket prices
A noise-cancelling headphone only block the noise by adding another noise. That said, it's not good for your ear, but only help you listen more clear with an illusion of no noise.

Low cost airline but they served full meal? Great service 👍
Almost all airlines in China serve full meal. Actually passengers in China kind of take it as granted, making quite a lot of passengers kind of upset when one or two ( I think) airlines started to learn from western airlines and cancel the full meal service.
The Chinese value their food, in both quality and having an ordered schedule when it comes to time of eating.
One does not develop a top notch cuisine otherwise :D

It uses MD80 tooling which was legally left behind in China when MD stopped manufacturing in China. That's why it looks like an MD80.
that's true
Maybe they should have made the fuselage square or triangular, and have a blunt flat nose and just one wing to make sure they are not "copying" the west.
@@Zerpentsa6598 so true dude
Your information about the aircraft is rong, the aircraft is a copy of the fokker 100 and it had help from fokker to develop the aircraft it have now better engines and upgraded wings also a upgraded cockpit.
@@mossmusap338 the only thing about this airplane that remotely relates to Fokker is project MPC
75, which was one of the few options China had in 80s when it decided to develop its one airliner. MPC 75 would have been a cooperation between China and Germany and it is closely related to Fokker 100. However, China chose to work with McDonnell Douglas at the end and assembled a number of MD 82
It also reminds me of my favorite DC9. The sevice ceiling might be a problem for potential buyers. The service looked awesome.
For short hops from state to state it is Ok. Way better than turboprop while being faster.

@Anantha Narayanan no accident happened at present😆
@Ho Chi Wang whilst your natioanl pride is admirable, the failure of the max was because one company failed to keep up with another and ignored safety, if China wants to have a comparable aviaton industry to europe, then it needs to focus on safety from the outset, not just getting the product to market, if they had done, then the arj21 would be easa and faa certified and a viable product, not just a national piece of propoganda, the soviet union had the same problem !
