    I just took up kayaking and this is so inspirational. I live in Cowichan Bay on a sailboat, and the kayak is a great way to see all the little spots the big boat can't get to.

    I've been doing paddling trips all my adult life. Always with groups of friends, not guided. I'm 69. You guys get what its all about. It was wonderful to see you all go through it. There are those days when you are getting into the groove. The days when you have it down. And then the re-entry. You had a wonderful trip. Takes me at least a week or two to get re-adjusted to life in civilization after re-entry. There is a period of depression. I've been worried recently that maybe I've been on my last trip. But, watching you all makes me know I will be at it again before long. Just got to get this US Canadian border opened up again. I do agree with comment below about taking risks. Sometimes we don't even realize the risks we take. But, you did great and you managed to avoid disaster. You had the trip of a lifetime. For others watching this - consider building up to a trip like this by doing smaller stuff and developing skills first. The dangers of sea kayaking on open water, or canoe tripping in wild places, are quite real. I little more prep could help you avoid real disaster.

    Beautiful.. I'm a retired military veteran, because of issues beyond my control finding gainful employment is difficult. But, now I intend on taking control back. My intention and plan is to guide kayak/canoe expositions on rivers and waterways in my area. There will be a focus on wounded vets to help heal and find their center again. This video didn't plant the seed for adventure but it is a source of inspiration... Good job

    I love when people share these videos. Kayaking while sea sick is just so miserable, you can't explain it to people who haven't experienced it... Good on you for pushing through. Most people would just give up after that. One item at the top of my bucket list is to paddle the inside passage.Thanks for sharing.

    Are you Canadians kidding me? No experience required for almost 2 months of kayaking expedition? I’m truly impressed by your adventurous spirit to do such heavy lifting trip, you guys did great, amazing! I’m an adventurous person having many outdoors canoeing journeys in BWCA, Minnesota, and many other hiking camping trips in Alaska and Washington state, but have never done a trip to wilderness longer than 7 days. Anyway, hats off to you all. Thank you for sharing your happy journey filled with laughters. My next adventure with girlfriend and a coworker is a kayaking trip to Glacier Bay, Alaska, in a month or so. It’s exciting, but very anxious too on the planning and the outside factors that are out of our control. Anyway, kudos to you all for an incredible journey! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    This just came up in my RUclips feed for the first time. My brother and I paddled the inside passage in 1974, and dreamed of making a similar movie to this. We were limited by technology and money back then but this movie did a great job of bringing back many memories. Excellent job of capturing a lot of the emotions, transitions, and team dynamics of the journey. Last year (2017) my brother and I along with my two sons returned to complete the Ketchikan to Juneau segment. This time my son, Nathan, ( a professional film maker with Days Edge Productions) was able to capture some of the trip in a 25 minute film called "The Passage".
    What I love about the movie he made is how the work, toil. exposure, and prolonged paddling . i.e. just an adventure canoe trip, can transcend into themes that's universal in all our lives.
    Your film is an enjoyable and unvarnished look at the passage. Our version of "the Passage" is a little bit about what happens 43 years after such trips and how these trips shape who we become.

And how wonderful to be able to return and have that experience with your sons. Every spring I do a 7-10 day trip with friends and keep exploring all the incredible corners of our coast. I feel so privileged to live in a place where this is our Big Backyard.

    Years ago I gave a talk on sea kayaking to a very upscale group of sea kayakers in NYC. I began my talk by asking for a show of hands as to how many in the audience had a college degree. Nearly every hand went up. I then asked how many had a masters or were working on one. Lot of hands went up. Finally I asked how many had doctorates or were working one one. Surprisingly, a fair number of hands went up. I then added, I am here today to introduce you to the University of The Sea where all tests are pass or fail, no makeups allowed. Please be aware that the first test you fail may be the last one you get to take! My point was that while our educational system encourages us to be willing to take risks and make mistakes the sea, the mountains, the rivers, the out of doors in general, are not very forgiving. You screw up, you pay for it! So rule #1 for sea kayakers is Don't tip over! Rule #2 is Stay within your competency level! and rule #3 is Don't count on getting help if you do screw up!
    All that said this group of young people took a big risk in tackling a trip like this without any real sea kayaking experience. Happily they were very fortunate and thus survived their "learning experience" at the University of The Sea. A religious person might conclude that "someone" was watching over them. A poker player might just say they had "good luck." But make no mistake about it this trip could easily have ended with a much less happy ending.
    I'm glad that didn't happen and I am pleased that these youngsters survived the trip and seemed to learn a lot in the process. But with more than 65 years on the sea in various watercraft and thousands of miles of sea kayaking if they'd asked for my advice before setting off I'd probably have advised against it because while some people survive their ignorance others do not...

  • @Conhead66
    @Conhead66 6 лет назад +1

    Intention are good, the route seems awesome and you seem to have tried to get ready... what's missing is maybe at the very least one person with real experience as it seems you were just very lucky in many many misadventures. Things can go bad very quickly in and around sea. I've known people with great experience get in serious trouble in that area. And there's many thing I've wouldn't had done even with the experience I have (e.i. using sails mostly for the level of experience of the crew). All in all my 2 cents is although you guys had a happy ending I would recommend anyone watching and wanting to do this kind of journey to find someone of experience. Though I prefer now to go with other of similar or greater experience, other experienced Kayakers will always be there to bring people that are starting off. There's also guides and courses. I would never recommend a bunch of beginners to go together. Anyone had wilderness first aid? knew how to read charts? understood tides?
    Relying on luck is not they way to go when you are in the wilderness.

    • @ohjimmy7604
      @ohjimmy7604 5 лет назад

      You are right but they knew that they were taking risks and chose to accept it. They did not have an option to take a more experienced paddler with them, or if they did, it would have been someone they didn't know and would have sucked some of the fun out of their trip. They acknowledge their own lack of experience. How does one gain experience? By doing!
