I kayaked the Inside Passage twice (10 weeks and 14 weeks) from Seattle to Skagway on different routes, and I have to say, the abundance of wildlife and the primitive beach camping were unsurpassed. I also did the B.C. portion via sailboat as part of my singlehanded circumnavigation after a passage from Tonga and making landfall at Prince Rupert and sailing/motoring south in the Fall. I miss the sailboat cruising life.
Wow, that's incredible! Serious respect for folks out here in smaller vessels, its wet and wild! But agreed, the abundance of wildlife is absolutely amazing. Congrats on your singlehanded circumnav as well, inspiring stuff! Do you still have your sailboat?
The quality of your videos is awesome and you guys are just full of fun and so sweet. Its like being on the crew. Thanks once again. ❤❤ wishing you Maxi-prawn!

I'm sure your productions deserve more than I can comment about. But, carry on heading North. I've only been to Alaska once and it left me with the image of a very 'big' country. Kodiak Island is worthy of a visit, but I'm sure your visa will limit you. You know how careful we are with ferners. -Curt ❤❤

Great to see both of you having a fantastic time with each other and the great outdoors. Love seeing how you present your adventures and seeing the wild life and scenery and life on board your boat. See ya next time.
😂James your fishing fiasco does make for interesting funny video 🤣🤣 Loved Allison’s bouts of laughing hysteria ♥️ Anyway you redeemed yourself with the prawn catch. When the catch is that fresh be it any seafood just the seafood by itself is the best. After that the gooey cheesy seafood is the best. Your stir fry also looks amazing. As always, superb captures of nature, scenery, and of course music selection. Loved it
Just discovered your videos. They're helping fill the void in my soul away from PNW boating during the offseason. Your camera work and editing is amazing and I love the anchoring detail and shared lessons. You make it look easy but with helpful context. I also love the minimalism (not even a windlass!). You're focused on adventure, not upgrades and tech. One minor suggestion: Show the chart a little more or perhaps you have a website where your route can be examined? I'd love more time to study your locations. Thank you!
Awh, love to hear that! Thanks for the kind words. Glad you found us and have been enjoying the videos! We’ll try and linger in the charts a little longer. Thanks for writing, cheers!
Thanks for this prawns video! I grew up on the gulf coast of the US during the 1950’s and got to eat fresh seafood often. Good times! Hard to believe it now but in that time there was abundant wild coastal land. All kinds of goodness was available at the docks where dedicated fishermen brought their catch every day.
Great video. Very inspirational! Re- the prawns, please tell me you didnt just throw away the heads and shells. They would make a fantastic 'Prawn Bisque" soup, perfect for those colder evenings. Yum yum!!
Love your videos, I'm a wannabe sailor, I have a small day sailboat I take out on the lake, but I've never been on a voyage. I hope to make it happen some day, and your current voyage to Alaska looks like one that should be at the top of my list. You are very inspiring to me. Keep the beautiful well made videos coming.
Awh, love to hear that! Keep working towards it, and one day you’ll find yourself in Alaska. It’s an incredible feeling! Hope to keep the videos coming, thank you for being here, cheers!
Love to hear that our videos are appealing to non-sailors! But I guess we weren't sailors either just four years ago. So far its the best thing we ever did!
I noticed James keep saying how terrible he is at fishing. And that's because you speaking that into existence. You get what you put out into the universe.
Hahaha mostly I just enjoy making fun of myself… I catch plenty of fish usually so large that they break all our gear but sometimes they’re so small I have to let them go…. It a tough life as a fisherman 🐠🎣🍣
My favourite quick prawn recipe is to make a margaritas, and marinate them in it for 15-20 minutes. You dont want to leave them too long or youve got a ceviche. Pull the prawns out, add a little corn starch and reduce to a sauce. I normally will grill the prawns, put them an a platter, and either use the sauce for dipping, or pour it over all the prawns.
I love this video. I love all your videos! You capture the magnificent scenery so beautifully. You both are such lovely people. Thank you for sharing this. Grateful for you both. 😊
Prawny story ))) We were anchored in Tenedos Bay (Desolation Sound). There was a bunch of boats anchored around there in summer time. And some of them used their generators quite a bit. One morning our next door neighbour is rowing over to our boat and dropping a ziplock full of huge freshly caught prawns! And he apologized for making a noise while running his generator. But frankly we didn't mind much their noise. Not at all. Especially, after cooking and enjoying those wonderful prawns. NOTHING can even come close )))
Ahhh good ol' Desolation Sound! Our first season out and about we landed in Deso and dropped the hook in Walsh Cove where a nice older gentleman rowed over to deliver us a bag of freshly caught prawns he had just hauled up. Like you, we were absolutely over the moon!! And vouched to get our own prawn trap one day. Now we're fast to deliver fresh ocean treats to our neighbors whenever we get the chance. Good to keep that cruising comradery alive! Thanks for sharing, cheers!
Awh, love to hear it thanks! We also love Mel and Pash! Great folks, met up at Cain! Wish we could join you for more prawns! We'll catch you in the next one, cheers Tim!
Greetings from 59°15'22.53"N 13°59'46.92"O in southern Sweden! Looking at you both in winter clothing, bears and glaciers at 53°33'17.68"N 129°36'10.60"V .. I'm further north and here is still quite warm (10-15 C) even though autumn is here! We are so grateful for the warm Gulf stream!!! 😁
How cool! We we're stoked to make it 59 degrees North this season. It was cold up there in front of the glaciers though😅 We're keen to sail Scandinavia one day soon, high on our list. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Cruising guide? We use Douglass & Hemingway’s ‘Exploring Southeast Alaska’ and ‘Exploring the North Coast of BC’ (two books) almost exclusively, supplemented with Navionics amzn.to/3Y8tGPE
Love the prawn action! Thanks for another beautiful episode! It seems to me that "The Ditch" is not really the "Grenville Grind" that other cruisers have described it as😊. I still love the cruiser's cooking aspect of your episodes too, keep it up!!!
Us too! 🦐 Really put us on a high for this leg of the trip! We thought it was going to be a grind too but it ended up being really beautiful. Guess it’s a matter of perspective sometimes. Thanks for writing, we’ll see you (with more cruiser’s cooking) in the next one, cheers!
I must agree with other posters the quality of your videos is superb really enjoyed this episode and the music great job you guys we just bought a Catalina 34 and are hoping to reproduce your journey
Awh, thanks so much! And congratulations guys! Stoked you’ll get to experience this all first hand. Let us know how it all works out! We’ll see you in the next one, cheers!
So glad you're enjoying them! We often say, these will be the best days of our lives. Soaking it all up! I seem to have some sort of shellfish allergy myself although thankfully seems to mainly be scallops and mussels in copious amounts. If it migrates to crab and prawns I will be extremely disappointed. Thanks for tuning in this week, we'll catch you in the next one, Cheers!
We have a special pizza on Cariba that we make with prawns... Homemade dough, pesto, red onion, feta, sundried tomato, prawns and some mozzarella cheese... so yummy. We also make a stir fry with sweet thai chile sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce , garlic and ginger and what ever veggies we have.. serve over spaghetti noodles instead of rice. So miss prawning in the PNW! We are in Mexico and can buy lots of camerones but not the same as PNW prawns!... great video, you are making me miss home! Cheers from SV Cariba!
James & Allison!🌻U2 have the Best POSITIVE & Practical Attitudes!! (most spoiled passengers on a 'cruiseship' complain about everything☢️) Instead you two make roughing it alone at sea seem easy..& a Pleasure🌞 (We know you don't record all conflicts😜) Glad you got to eat fresh prawns😋 Have u ever caught 150 limit in a 'day'? and...😊How often to you see Seaplanes? 🛩️
Your videos are so evocative of the NW coast sailing experience, it’s almost like being there (except I don’t have to dry out my clothes afterward!). But what the heck are those birds foraging on the shore at 15:50? I’ve lived in coastal BC most of my life and don’t think I’ve encountered those before. Looks like a cross between a heron and a feral cassowary! Edit: Google image search and the Cornell University Merlin Bird ID app tell me that they may be Sandhill cranes? And, if so, they are classified as “rare”, and in that location they might be migrating between their northern breeding grounds and Texas/Mexico. I guess they don’t need a visa!
Awh haha thank you! Was waiting for someone to comment about those birds! We didn’t know what the heck they were. They made the loudest weirdest sounds as well, sounded like a velociraptor! Haha def giving cassowary/bush turkey vibes but we did see these ones fly. Indeed seems they are Sandhill cranes, curious how rare they are!
Fantastic video from a part of the world I'd love to take Trilleen to at some point. One Atlantic crossing, Panama and a long sail north stands in the way so ...
One of the best episodes (so far) this season! As I've commented before on one of your videos, I find them so inspiring and because of what you're doing, it's my favorite sailing channel. Very useful info about the Greenville Channel and the Ditch. Out of curiosity, what cruising or pilot guides do you find are the most useful for cruising The Inside Passage and Alaska for us sailors wanting to do the same in the future? My yacht is only 28ft with a 18hp diesel engine but it's on my bucket list to do a similar journey one day. Firstly, for the breath taking beautiful scenery and wildlife and secondly because I have a very old pilot log book from 1931 (M.V. Infanta which belonged to the actor John Barrymore) and would love to do their same journey. Yes, I've bought some old nautical paper charts (do people STILL use these nowadays?) and planned all the passages but it's not the same experience as having the wind on your face (and lots of rain as well by the looks of your video!!) and the views is something you need to feel & see for real. From waypoints noted in the log book, they also went through the Greenville Channel mooring at Kinahan Island & then Ketchikan. It took 5 days from Vancouver to Ketchikan in a 120ft motor yacht doing on average 10 knots! The Barrymores' 1931 Alaskan cruise ventured North as far as Lituya Bay before returning South again. Lisianski Inlet was their longest stay whilst in Alaska at 11 days so it must held some sort of fascination. (Think John Barrymore was interested in the Gold Mining business there with a Mr. J.H. Cann) However, they did stop in Prince Rupert AFTER mooring once again at Kinahan - so looking forward VERY MUCH to your next episode! P.S. Looking for the episode where you catch and bring back a Totem Pole, sorry PRAWN, from Tuxekan.....😜
Awe, thank so much!! Love to hear that, glad you’re enjoying them! For cruising guides we like Douglas and Hemingway books (BC North Coast and Exploring SE Alaska). We use those pretty exclusively supplemented with Navionics and word of mouth recommendations. Hope you get to take on the journey and experience it first hand soon! Sounds like you’ve got an interesting story to chase💫
I laughed as hard as you Allison when James caught the anchor with his fishing rod. Just wanted to point out how wobbly your chimney is when you're going through rough seas.
hahah we can never let it down! ⚓ Thanks we're aware of the chimney wobble. We have a removable flu and usually take the H cap off when sailing/moving around but it was a soggy trip and and we were keen to keep warm! It's on there more securely then it looks, only nearly lost it once blowing in a gale while on anchor. Thanks for writing, we'll see you in the next one, cheers!
Where you are is absolutely gorgeous! Wish I was with you but my boat is on the east coast. You guys are in a great place to see the next comet in October. Should be visible just after sunset almost due west from about the 10th thru the 20th. Maybe we'll see pictures.
We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to cruise here! We've probably ruined ourselves for world cruising... Thanks for the tip!☄️We'll keep our eyes peeled! Thanks for tuning in this week, cheers!
@AllisonandJamesSailing that's what I said initially, but many gulf island's (Thetis, Pender, etc) won't give you water in the summer these days. I consistently have to detour to the mainland for water. I'm just going by what I've experienced. Best of luck!
Watching the first part of this video I just kept thinking pilothouse. Preferably one with dual helms one outside one inside. I’m researching buying a boat, the NWP being one area I want to visit, it will most likely be a used steel pilothouse DS. Unless I win the lottery then it will be a Sirius 40ds.
OMG! I couldn’t fathom life aboard without having fresh cracked pepper! Especially for a dish like that. I guess the scenery almost makes up for it, or at least makes it a survivable situation, lol. Is there a reason you didn’t add a bow roller for your anchor chain? And is your diesel heater stack meant to be that loose?
haha we lived to tell the tale. But it won't happen again, it's now in our grab bag! We have plans for a bow roller, it’s actually a little more challenging than meets the eye due to the geometry of the bow, just didn’t get to it before leaving on this trip. As for the diesel stack. It’s removable with a deck cap so the flu is press fitted, being secondhand it’s a little worn.
Great video! Where do you store that giant prawn trap on the boat? I want one, but I have no idea where to fit it in my Catalina 30. I saw small collapsible ones in a chandlery, but I am not sure that they can catch anything.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a actually flex fold trap (one of those collapsible ones) - this one folds up and packs flat. However we usually just stuff it up under our dinghy on deck😅
Yay, happy to pop in the inbox today! Yes, we're doing it all wrong with the flag placement haha Soon you'll see a US of A flag flying up there where it belongs. Thanks for tuning in, cheers!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Hello. Yes in Canada we do not care too much (14K license so the boat is likely Canadian registered anyway). In the USA you can get boarded if the USCG cannot identify your vessel.
We have transited the Grenville Channel several times on our way to Alaska. We belong to a group of over 2,000 boaters that has done the same thing many times. No one calls it the ditch. Not sure where you got that name. None of the popular cruising guide books use that name either.
Great! Glad you’ve gotten to experience the area first hand! The first time we heard about this leg of the trip it was referred to as the Ditch… Have you tried Googling it? There’s multiple articles referring to it as such. Heres one for example, cheers! slowboat.com/2017/08/outside-of-the-inside/
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Here's what I get. Is Grenville Channel in British Columbia called the ditch? Copilot No, Grenville Channel in British Columbia is not called "the ditch." It is a strait on the North Coast of British Columbia, between Pitt Island and the mainland, and is part of the Inside Passage shipping route1 . It was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1793 after William Wyndham Grenville, a British politician2 .
Wow, that food looks terrific! You need a windless. What are your future plans on sailing? I'm thinking that you are going to go around the world after this test sail but really don't know. Also, what is your previous sailing experience?
We haven’t gotten around to completing our bow refit project yet, it’s been on a very long list! We’re most interested in high latitude so future plans will be built around that. We didn’t have much previous sailing experience, so we bought this boat and have been learning as we go💫
@@AllisonandJamesSailing To gain basic sailing knowledge, I'd suggest to join a sailing program for the summer and learn how to sail a Laser and other small one man boats. This will give you sail boat handling skills that will transfer into your big boat. As for me, I'm going to start a Cyber 48 build next summer and plan on doing a circumnavigation at least once. I grew up sailing in these type of sailing programs and it really helped me learn much about sailing. It's a life long learning experience where your always learning something new even for me. What would be nice if you built a little sailing tender that you can also put a motor on. That way you can learn as you go. Sailing Yacht Florence has such a tender.
Several RUclips videos have done a bow refit like Sailing Yacht Florence and Sailing Uma. In fact, Sailing Uma is about ready to do another refit to make the bow section even better than it was before.

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Do you have a favorite book for cruisers looking to make this journey?
Cruising guide? We use Douglass & Hemingway’s ‘Exploring Southeast Alaska’ and ‘Exploring the North Coast of BC’ (two books) almost exclusively, supplemented with Navionics

hahaha, that was hilarious. "Al, it is a big one"- still laughing out loud. Kerrie
haha never let it down! Cheers!
Awesome show guys! Great prawn hunting! You're last prawn meal was my favorite - the one with creamy white sauce and pasta. Beautiful!
Prawn alfredo definitely tops the list. Glad you enjoyed another one. We'll catch you next week!
Love prawns AND you guys!!!❤can’t wait for next episode…
Awh, thanks for the love! We’ll see you in the next one (coming soon), cheers!
love your videos they remind me of my boating days 83 and still good memories alergic to prawns and shell fish Garth
Way Kewl! Great music too.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much!
Prawn alfredo for the win!! 🦐🤌
We need to find some more prawns stat!
Wonderful vicarious adventure with you. Thanks from a Florida sailor. God bless +
Thank you for following along on the journey, cheers!

You're really telling a great story.
Thank you so much!
Looks like you're having a lot of fun. Enjoy the trip.
We feel so grateful to be out here! Thanks so much!

Sneaky trick, hiding two beers in advance for a special occasion. 😂. Oh lucky strike!

Thanks so much! These are certainly good times
Cheers from SV Cariba!
mmm those sound absolutely delicious! Def be giving those recipes a go. Hope you get to taste some fresh PNW prawns soon. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
Thank You for sharing all that Beauty and congrates on the prawn haul! Hello from NE Texas!
Our pleasure! Thanks for tuning in all the way from Texas! We'll see you in the next one, cheers!
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers!
Out of pepper. Oh my God. I make sure to have at least 2 full mills as well as ground on my boat at all times
LOL
Distance makes the heart grow fonder.. We’ll be sure never to be out again! haha
Such a tasty treat, thank you ocean! This might end up being our all time record haha
The amount of seaplanes in Alaska was insane
another great video really enjoyed
So happy to hear, thanks so much Pat! We'll see you again in the next one, cheers!
Fantastic as always =) never had prawns but will try if I even get out there. Love the cooking as well!
Hope you get to treat yourself to some nice tasty prawns soon! Thanks so much Kevin! Glad you enjoyed it
Your videos are so evocative of the NW coast sailing experience, it’s almost like being there (except I don’t have to dry out my clothes afterward!).
Indeed seems they are Sandhill cranes, curious how rare they are!
nice episode! i like my prawns baked in garlic, bit of white wine and a spoonful of honey... mmmm delisious!
Mmm delicious! We need to get our hands on some more prawns stat
Beautiful scenery as usual. Making good progress. I’m looking forward to seeing what Prince Rupert (who was he?) looks like!
We shall lay ourselves before thy majesty and find out! haha Nah, likely looks a lot like a cargo ship..
Thanks for watching, cheers!
Prawns with garlic lots of butter and lemon juice.
Yeum! A classic favorite💫
Fantastic video from a part of the world I'd love to take Trilleen to at some point. One Atlantic crossing, Panama and a long sail north stands in the way so ...
It’s a little bit off the world cruising routes, but arguably some of the best in the world! Thanks for tuning in, cheers!
Thanks for another great video! I like to eat them raw! Better flavor, when fresh!
Ouu we haven’t tried them raw. But I guess why not?! Haha Glad you enjoyed it, we’ll catch you in the next one! Cheers!
I laughed as hard as you Allison when James caught the anchor with his fishing rod. Just wanted to point out how wobbly your chimney is when you're going through rough seas.
hahah we can never let it down! ⚓
Thanks we're aware of the chimney wobble.
Shrimp Cocktail, extra horseradish!
Nice touch! Cheers!
Gotta love being caught between tides all the time. I am guessing the little engine is holding up fine?
Little engine is holding up great!
Love love love prawns. Wrap in prosciutto ham and broil. Dip or not. I don’t.
Ouu luxurious, I like it! Thanks for sharing, cheers!
2 important improvements to cruising in smaller boats are a water maker and an additional fuel tank (20gal). Should be space under the quarterbirth.
There is no need for either of those things were we are cruising because water and fuel are readily available
@AllisonandJamesSailing that's what I said initially, but many gulf island's (Thetis, Pender, etc) won't give you water in the summer these days. I consistently have to detour to the mainland for water. I'm just going by what I've experienced. Best of luck!
Guess those islands don’t have an aquifer? We don’t plan on cruising much down south. Thanks for writing tho, cheers!
A pilothouse would definitely do you good in this part of the world. The NWP is goals. Thanks for tuning in, cheers!
Nice to see you arriving in my YT inbox!
I just noticed that you have a Canadian courtesy flag on starboard spreader but no Ensign at the stern ??
The first time we heard about this leg of the trip it was referred to as the Ditch…
Have you tried Googling it? There’s multiple articles referring to it as such. Heres one for example, cheers! slowboat.com/2017/08/outside-of-the-inside/
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Here's what I get. Is Grenville Channel in British Columbia called the ditch?
Copilot
No, Grenville Channel in British Columbia is not called "the ditch." It is a strait on the North Coast of British Columbia, between Pitt Island and the mainland, and is part of the Inside Passage shipping route1
. It was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1793 after William Wyndham Grenville, a British politician2
.

Uh oh- Why is your stove chimney flopping around? 😅
We have a removable flu and usually take the H cap off when sailing, it was a soggy trip and and we enjoyed keeping warm 😅
Good to hear, those are awesome stoves, watched your install, upgrades.
Love your channel. Almost about to bite the bullet myself and post up out of Campbell river or some sleepy town mainland. Canadian Mike 🤗🦞
you probably have said but how much fuel does the furnace take
It burn around 3L/24hr. Depends on how high you run it and how long you run it for as to your overall fuel consumption.
What app do you use to create the maps?! they’re awesome?
Thanks so much! James actually makes them all (painstaking) in Adobe After Effects, it's a bit of a process so glad they're appreciated, cheers!

Make sure your bait cup is not moving around the shrimp are skittish and any movement in the trap spooks them away from the bait.
Thanks for the tip! We’ll make sure it’s good and secured in the future, cheers!

We don’t call our inlets and channels “fjords”! This is CANADA not Norway!
We do, maybe you don’t?! : a narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or steep slopes - the channels and inlets round here definitely fit the official definition. Cheers!
