    I think all the early renaissance artists like Michelangelo and Da Vinci were fan artists as well. I mean, they drew characters from the Bible and stuff.

      The Bible fandom was pretty toxic I would say myself. Burning people just because they were from the science fandom.

    I really appreciate the fact that you've been pushing the idea of having fun and doing what you enjoy lately.There is no textbook on how to create art. I see a lot of newer artists that are following all of these fundamental guides and just SLAVING over artwork and it almost makes me mad because they're not even enjoying themselves anymore. Not only do I improve the most when I'm having fun, but I also tend to make better work when I'm following my intuition and being myself.

    Hey Ahmed, would you ever consider doing a video/ podcast about how you deal with difficult customers? I've only recently started commissions, but I've already had two extremely difficult and demanding customers. How do you deal with them, or at least make the whole process less stressful? I want to pursue a career as a designer, but I'm having a hard time keeping motivated.

      First you need to give a rule to them. Like three times big revision max or you will charge more. Also I think you should create sketch and concept as clear as possible since beginning, create some alternative sketch and provide a good visual for them. Because some people are not have good imagination and could illustrate thing like you so a good sketch is the key. If it's just some minor change or request, i think you should just deal with it

    Ahmed,
    I know I chime in on Facebook here and there, but there is so much value in watching and listening to you work. Your premise of working from traditional has had an incredible influence helping my studies. I was having major issues coloring grayscale and just ended up emulating oils as best as I can digitally. So many things happen when you minimize brushes and just go for it with colors traditionally (well, traditional/digital;p) and learn how colors interact with one another.

    Ahmed I'm always amazed at how you can get your words and concepts across so effortlessly, clearly, and easily to understand. Did you have to work at speaking, and do you ever have to rehearse what you say beforehand? I mean, you don't even stutter and your voice is amazing!! XD

    • @AhmedAldoori
      @AhmedAldoori  8 лет назад +18

      +Kay Aykay Eesh! Thank you. Interesting that you asked about this - I used to be awful at talking, public speaking, getting my thoughts across... but at school there was a dude who was really impressive at presentations. Steven is crazy good at weaving lines of beautiful rhetoric on the spot while also being captivatingly entertaining. Needless to say, we became good friends and did a skills trade, I taught art and he taught me what he knows about speaking. He had a lot of exposure to stage performance - which explained a lot.
      It took me about 2 years of being around him before transitioning from a mumbling idiot with incoherent sentences to what I am today. I don't rehearse anything for RUclips. Sometimes I talk to myself in the shower or in the car...but it's just talking aloud. Anyway, if you're interested here's what I'd recommend;
      -Read a lot. People have already mastered the art of putting words together, it's not a sin to piggy back off of what already exists in terms of literature.
      -Do impressions of existing performers, whether it's comedians, actors, public speakers - whatever. They're like master studies of paintings, but instead it's about speaking. I like the entertainment stuff.
      -Be around people who speak with an educated vernacular - challenging each other to out-do one another in terms of speaking.
      -Always keep it short. Always get to the point. My biggest hurdles were getting all the nonsense out of the way, realizing that a lot of my words were just fillers that represented my insecurities about speaking.
      -Fail a lot. Acknowledge that it takes time to get good at something. For one of my classes, we had to pick an existing game and design a theme park based on it. I picked the Legend of Zelda. When it came time for presentation, I literally dressed up as Link and put on a show as if I was someone working at the theme park (while everyone else just talked about their artwork etc...). It was horrible, it was my first attempt, but I had to do it to get the bad stuff out of the way. I have footage of this haha...oh boy. Still though, everyone loved it.
      -Be vulnerable. Allow yourself to be judged, and don't take it personally - use those criticisms to actually adjust your skills (whether it's talking about something on RUclips or a full-on stage performance)
      -Don't fake it - at first when I started recording RUclips videos, it was very inauthentic because I thought I had to put on some show, or to pretend to be knowledgable or whatever - it comes across as fake and forced. Loosen up and be yourself etc.
      Thanks for asking!

    this was cool and i'm looking forward to the contest :) if you have time i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on being an artist on youtube, the youtube community etc. There are a lot of artists on youtube but I feel like it's a genre that hasn't been as dominated as gaming videos for example, and I was also wondering how it has impacted your career outside of youtube...? anyway yeah only if you feel like answering :3

    • @TheCoffeeMonsterzCo
      @TheCoffeeMonsterzCo 8 лет назад +3

      +pan I think one of the reasons why there are fewer artists on RUclips and how artists are less successful on youtube than gamers is... well anyone can be a gamer. As long as you understand how to play the game, you can record yourself playing, exaggerate some reactions, etc. As for artists, not everyone can produce beautiful art in the way everybody and play a game. There are very few artists who can create top notch art where non artistic people who know nothing about art would watch. I think that's the primary reason why there aren't too many successful art videos; there's not enough creators.

    Hi Ahmed, maybe I arrived a little late to the party since I just recently discovered your videos, but I have a question. I'm 21, I graduated from college as an Actor but mainly did that my whole life because that's what my whole family is into, however I recently realized that the only thing that makes me happy is creating characters and stories, I have drawn my whole life but never really put much thought into studying and getting better until recently so honestly my art isn't that great yet… Based on your experience am I still in time to be a Concept Artist?
    Your answer won't discourage me, but it just might encourage me further so please be honest. Thanks for your videos! Cheers!

  • @elsevillaart
    @elsevillaart 8 лет назад

    Inspiring speech, also in Fan Art, i think people should draw it with passion, characters that you are really a fan, that make you smile, dream, get sad, get happy. And not just googling whats the most famous character at the moment and draw it just to get some likes( i had seen tons of mistakes, for example Characters that cant fly, here you will now the artist didnt watched the show).
    If you fan art haves passsion people will notice it and the feedback will be greater than drawing a character just because everyone is doing it right now, it may get lost in the tons of images they upload a day.

    I just stumbled on your channel and I feel like you're a really funny and interesting person and I like listening to you. I'm not that good at speaking english so I'm sorry if my compliments feel a bit extreme. I guess they actually are.
    I will definetely take a closer look at your stuff and your videos because I can.
    Huh... Well... Is there more to say about this? I guess not. Today I tried to draw Daenerys Targaryen and the nose ended up to big so it became a Star Wars + Game of Thrones Mash up with Daenerys and Kylo Ren mixed together and now I got Dylo TargaRen. I didn't upload a video of this. Just felt like i should share this past of mine.

    hey idk if this is a dumb question but how do you come up w good backgrounds?? Usually i onlymake a base color as the background but it makes my drawings look boring do you have any tips to add more flavor to my drawings because atm i feel like it's making my drawing look flat and boring

    • @AhmedAldoori
      @AhmedAldoori  8 лет назад +1

      +Bentacles K Sure! I can say the following; If you're going to add a background to your character (or anything), understand that it's an extension of the character. Meaning, the shapes should sort of "grow" out of your focal point in order to support it. Maybe they are directional lines pointed to it, or diagonal slashes for dynamics, but they will serve as underlays for actual content.
      For example, if you're drawing a mermaid character, you could put guidelines that support her all around. Using those guidelines (let's say they're diagonals) you can fill it in with themed things like sunken ships, sharks, seaweeds etc - but the key is to establish a shape language that feels like it is part of the character.
      I suppose I'll have to do a tutorial on this to better explain it.

    @ 6:30 It seems like the point you are trying to make is that its possible you wouldn't like that artist work as much if they were doing their own stuff, not just fan art. I'm not against it myself, but as a comic artist that makes my own books, I get a little uppity about all the artist that just do fanart and never draw sequentials. And even in that I'm a bit of a hypocrite, bc I did a twenty page Supernatural fan comic myself. Mostly bc I was in the middle of a massive creative block and needed a project to break me out of it.
