In this excerpt from "Hand Puppet Detail And Finishing Techniques Part 1: Color & Hair Work," master puppet artist BJ Guyer (Muppet's Wizard of Oz, Glee, Crank Yankers) teaches you how to pattern and cut out fur facial hair for hand puppets.
To begin, Guyer shows you how quick and easy it can be to make patterns for puppet facial hair by patterning directly onto the head using household paper towels.
From there, BJ reveals his approach to transferring a pattern onto fur backing, before gently cutting it out with a sharp razor blade to preserve as much of the fur's length and nap as possible.
Finally, BJ discusses several ways to create clean edge lines for your puppet facial hair for a finished and professional look in preparation for final cutting and styling.
