      I'm also so glad you did capture it James! The performances are brilliant from all 4 musicians, they 've formed a very tight band and I can't say if I have a favorite in terms of music; but what I can say is this; Albanie looks so genuinely happy for singing and making this band gig, that she makes me smile too! Thank's for posting.

    Chloe is phenomenal and the primary reason I came here, but how about the gentleman on guitar? Wow, he is awesome! The whole band is tight! And as I'm typing this, Albaine breaks into her solo, my Lord, they are excellent! And let's not forget the fellow on bass, he's right in the pocket! James, I have recently developed a spark for this type of jazz music and it's due in large part to viewing your videos and for my own musical journey with the guitar. I have mixed feelings about people (mostly everyone with cell phones at live performances) recording shows, but videos just like this make me really appreciate people that film quality material. It has to be frustrating as an artist nowadays with everyone with a camera on them all the time, but at the same time, I would have never been exposed to these bands without this platform. Whether good or bad, modern technology has taken many miles out of our journeys in discovering any thought or interest the mind can manifest across the globe. Without your videos and videos like this, I would have never been able to experience New Orleans jazz like I recently have, thank you.

    • @JamesSterling
      @JamesSterling  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you so much for your thoughts. I too discovered this wonderful music and these phenomenal performers on RUclips. Fortunately I live only a 3 hour drive from New Orleans and have the time and means to travel there frequently. While recording I try to be as unobtrusive as possible I can recall only one instance where a musician was bothered by my recording and that was because he was not satisfied with his performance and did not want it published. I have seen musicians ask other people who used the light on their phones while recording to turn it off.
      This performance is one of my favorites that I've recorded. It was an early afternoon session at the d.b.a. and other than the bartender I was the only person there. It was awkward for the musicians I think, but it allowed me to stand as close as I wanted and not have any crowd noise or people walking in front of the camera.
      The bass player is John Joyce and the lead guitar is Kala Chandra. Kala had just recently arrived in New Orleans when this was recorded and has since become a regular on Frenchmen Street.

    • @AccuracySpeaks
      @AccuracySpeaks 6 лет назад +1

      I can tell by the manner in which you film that you are respectful of the musicians and the crowd as well, it really shows in your work. I can't believe you and the bartender were the only people in the facility, that is such a shame. Being that said, it truly shows you what it is to be a professional musician, as they performed like they were playing for an arena! I know one thing, although there were only two folks at this show, this performance has now been seen by almost three sold-out arenas worth of people! You know, I think having an active RUclips channel with content on it can sometimes distort our perception of viewership as their model for views doesn't really seem to matter in their eyes until you get in the seven-figure view count numbers, but when you think about the number of people actually viewing material, it is mindblowing. As of the time I type this, 26,628 individuals have seen this performance, that is right on par with half of an entire stadium worth of people!!

    • @JamesSterling
      @JamesSterling  6 лет назад +3

      All the credit goes to the musicians. I can almost guarantee you that this was the first time these musicians had played together and also the first time they had played this song together. I requested that they play it, they had a brief discussion as to whether everyone knew the tune, what key, and off they went! As a non musician I find it mind blowing that they can do this and be flawless in the execution of it.
      I checked your RUclips channel and you and I share a lot of other common interests. I also believe that "accuracy speaks"!

    • @AccuracySpeaks
      @AccuracySpeaks 6 лет назад +1

      That's impressive, yeah it is amazing how real pros can just adapt to any environment, but I guess it's like most anything someone works so hard to perfect their craft can usually adapt to most situations. Thanks for checking out the channel!

      Kala is still around playing with various bands but recently every time I see him he is playing clarinet, which I believe he only recently took up. I prefer him on guitar. Chloe is in such demand she is on the road frequently so catching her in New Orleans is hit or miss. Albanie also travels quite a bit. I ran into her this past FQF but she said she did not have a gig with anyone that weekend. John Joyce still plays with The Smoking Time Jazz Band as far as I know.

      @@mrjimmienoone2130 If she starts off playing in a subdued manner there is a reason. You cannot tell from the video but the only people present besides the band were the bartender and me, that is why there is no background noise. It was an unannounced early after session at the d.b.a. Imagine being a professional musician and playing to an empty hall. Kinda hard to get pumped up, so I consider this performance even more amazing since they were playing to an audience of one. This was an early afternoon performance at the d.b.a. and their was no one in the place except the band, the bartender, and me. I felt bad for the band but it made for excellent recording conditions. What was amazing was that this was the first time these musicians had performed together and I requested this song. The fact that the band was able to play it THAT perfectly just on a whim is nothing short of amazing. That's the difference between the real pros and dilettantes like me. And all without a fakebook in sight! And to a nearly empty room, which can be pretty discouraging. I understand why it's one of your favorites.

    • @JamesSterling
      @JamesSterling  2 года назад +1

      The effect is indeed intentional. I consulted with Pops Coffee for a technical explanation and this is what he said: "This song (composed by Harry Woods in 1934) is a standard 32-bar structure. As it comes up to the end of the first 16 bars, in bars 13, 14 and 15, only the first beat is sounded (with 'words', 'I', 'love' respectively and the other three beats in those bars are silent. There is no change in tempo. The music (I happen to have it) is written like that."
