When Adam and The Ants broke into the 80,s charts it was such a different sound, and most of us had never heard of a band with two drummers, they just blew up and had hit after hit.

"Stand and Deliver" is a song by Adam and the Ants, released in 1981. The lyrics tell the story of a character who is a dandy highwayman, a flamboyant and stylish robber. The protagonist boasts about his bold and fashionable appearance, emphasizing his disdain for conventional fashion. He mocks those who conform to societal norms and stereotypes, presenting himself as a rebellious figure challenging the status quo.
The repeated refrain "Stand and deliver your money or your life" is a bold declaration of the highwayman's intent, blending elements of danger with the theatricality of the character. The use of a mirror instead of a weapon adds a touch of irony, suggesting a defiance of traditional methods of robbery.
The lyrics also express a critique of superficiality and materialism. The highwayman questions the value of robbing when "nothing is worth taking," suggesting a commentary on the emptiness of consumer culture.
Towards the end, the invitation to "throw your safety overboard and join our insect nation" hints at a collective rebellion against conformity, inviting others to reject societal norms and join a subversive movement.
Overall, "Stand and Deliver" is a song that combines elements of punk, new wave, and glam rock, delivering a message of rebellion, individualism, and a rejection of societal expectations. The theatrical and flamboyant persona of the dandy highwayman becomes a symbol of resistance and nonconformity.

      @andymorrall Год назад +2

You are right about subversion, but I don't think it's "insect nation" (even though the lyric sites say it is), because it doesn't make sense. It could be "inscenation" meaning staging, setting, or 'feeling yourself into the scene'.

    • @mjq3555
      @mjq3555 Год назад +16

@@andymorrall Adam Ant's fans were known as, and referred to in previous songs, as 'Antpeople' so 'Insect Nation' makes complete sense to me as a collective of like minded people rebelling against conformity (and, unintentionally ironically, dressing and getting made up like Adam Ant and thus conforming after all).
A few singles had been released from the previous album which had the double drums, clattering drum sticks, deep voices and yelps and led to the buildup of his fanbase, and then this new track came out incorporating everything he'd done previously and it was a huge hit.

Adam And the Ants was my favorite band as a teenager in the 80s. They always looked like they were having so much fun. Here, Adam was a stagecoach bandit who holds up coaches so he can just insult rich people's boring fashion choices. He's like, I'm not going to shoot anyone I'm just going to hold up a mirror and embarrass you.

"So what's the point of robbery when nothing is worth taking?" Wise words!
I was such an Ant fan. Adam and his boys celebrated difference, style, being yourself above everything else. Their music had a parallel with 80's rap, too - the focus on show-off, self-proclaiming lyrics, peacocking, basically. Their songs in large part were about how cool they were and how everyone who feels like an outsider should come and join the Insect Nation and be cool like them. I got to see them play on tour with the Boomtown Rats, and they gave the greatest show ever. So much sass and fun! And KILLER CLOTHES!!

Let me tell you a long, personal story. As a student, I lived (in Edinburgh) opposite a music venue and typically new bands played on a Monday night. You could judge how well a new band would do by the queue outside the venue at about 7.30 pm (bands came on at about 9 pm). My flat was two streets away from the bus stop where I got off to go there. One night only, both streets were entirely full, absolutely heaving, no room. It took me 30 mins to work my way to my flat door about 400 yards away. The band was Adam and the Ants, love them!

*OMG!!!!!* *I LOVE ADAM ANT!!!!!* Early Adam and The Ants was one step from punk with "Xerox" "Kings of the Wild Frontier" and "Car Trouble." His sound changed and got rather pop for the next couple of albums. He struggled with mental illness and kept putting out music until the early 90s when the fight got the best of him for a bit. He came back with the album "Wonderul" on which the title track is amazing. He has also done quite a bit of acting both in movies and TV.

Adam & the Ants were a mix of punk & new romantic. They're all about fun and fashion and have a lot of typical British tongue-in-cheek humour in their songs and videos. If you've not realised the lead singer's stage name is Adam Ant (adamant) a fun play on words common in punk.
Fun fact: The band's manager was Malcolm McClaren who also manged punk bands such as The Sex Pistols, New Dolls and Bow, Wow, Wow. His girlfriend famous fashion designer,Vivienne Westwood, came up with the band's look.
They were huge in the early 80s winning several awards. Adam Ant's poster was ubiquitous on teenage girls bedroom walls and they had a number of big hits including: Prince Charming, Kings of the Wild Frontier, Puss in Boots, Ant Music, Goody Two-shoes, Strip & Dog Eat Dog.

I just get entertained by Amber bouncing around, enjoying the playfulness of the song and J's face as he tries to digest what he's hearing 😂 The Ants' percussion at the time was unique and kind of fit into the World Music movement that was helping create unique performances. Amber will love Strip or Goody Two Shoes.

I LOOOOOVE Adam Ant! This is a quintessential 80’s video! I read his autobiography. Adam was meticulous in the music writing (with guitarist Marco Pirroni), video planning and style of dress. All of the banquet guests were friends and the jacket he’s wearing is from the actual “Charge of the Light Brigade” and was given to him by his stylist (the character who sentenced him to hang in the video). Adam also did his own stunt of jumping through the window cutting his head in the process while filming. In Adam’s videos, he loved the dramatics of making a mini film but there was somewhat of a lightness to the video characters he played. Try ‘Goody Two Shoes’, ‘Ant Music’, ‘Place in the Country’ or ‘Prince Charming’ for the more “fanciful” side of Adam Ant. Or try pre-video Adam, “Beat My Guest” or more serious Adam Ant song, “Wonderful”. Thanks for covering this!

I love that Amber really gets the humour in this, Adam and the Ants I believe were quite short lived but definitely a sound of the 80s. To love Adam & The Ants it takes a person to fully entertain the artistic and uniqueness of the sound & style being presented. Adam & The Ants came out of the early British punk scene and their early music was heavier & darker. The first real album they released was called DIRK WEARS WHITE SOX and the sound was heavier/darker punk sounding with songs like - "Car Trouble", Never Trust a Man with Egg on His Face" and "Cleopatra". As punk was dying off Adam & The Ants sound began to change a bit with the early 80's sound. It became more rhythmic and he started using two drummers to give the music real heft & pulsating sounds. They released two albums a year apart - KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER ('80) and PRINCE CHARMING ('81). Both were successful in Britain but failed to top the charts in America, even though MTV began playing his videos (like this one) which people began checking out. Clearly a style many were unsure of but Britain has always been a bit more accepting of diverse music.
KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER provided us with - "Dog Eat Dog", Ant Music".
PRINCE CHARMING produced great songs - "Stand & Deliver", "That Voodoo" and "Ant Rap".
But Adam left the Ants and went solo with Marco Pirroni on guitar and released his first solo called FRIEND OR FOE. This resulted in a more pop driven, yet unique sounding album with Adam clearly becoming more of a sex symbol and resulting in heavy MTV airplay, which made him a huge phenomenon with the second British Invasion along with Duran Duran, Culture Club, Billy Idol and so many others. The album FRIEND OR FOE produced the hit single - "Goody Two Shoes". Songs like - "Desperate, but Not Serious" and a remake of the Doors, "Hello, I Love You" made the album lighter, more pop driven and more palatable to the American audience.
His solo work continued on and I recommend checking out songs like - "Vive Le Rock", "Wonderful", "Strip", "Room At the Top". Keep going down this rabbit hole. It gets really good and very interesting.

Have been waiting a long time for you to review Adam and the Ants. They were absolutely huge in the early 80's. Well, for a couple of years anyway until they broke up and Adam (real name Stuart Goddard) went solo. As they called the Beatles era, 'Beatlemania', they called this bands era Antmainia, and the fans were called Ant people. I was an Ant person. They toured Australia in 1981, but, as I was only young, being 16, I didn't get to see them. Luckily, Adam toured Australia a few years ago or so ago, and I saw him then. I'm so glad. Loved this song. Also my other favourite was the song 'Dog Eat Dog'. Actually loved all their hits and Adam's solo hits. But 'Stand and Deliver' was my favourite. His wife made all the outfits. They had two drummers and two drum kits. Their most famous song and another number one hit here in Australia was their first huge hit,'Ant Music'.You need to listen to that as well. I was a member of their fan club.

Aww, thanks for reacting to this. Amber, you had as much fun with this song as I always did, which is what it was meant for! So silly, but in a smart, irreverent way. One of the best 80s new wave bands-they made fun of everyone and themselves while creating actually good songs and just spreading joy.

Adam and The Ants, Bow Wow Wow, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Devo, and several others just had this amazing post pop punk vibe that I loved as many others did also.

Damn! Adam and the Ants were a staple hearing them on So.Cali radio stations back in the 80’s! Adam was also seen often on TV commercials with Grace Jones. I HAVE ALL HIS ALBUMS AND MUSIC!
May I suggest a nice song from an underrated band from the 1980s: The Church, “Under the Milky Way”.

I feel like this song didn't get enough love when it came out and still doesn't get much play on 80s radio, but it's one of my favorites. Sugar Ray did a cover of it in the 90's

I'm on my way to see Adam and the Ants (with the English Beat), and can't wait. I've loved them since high school (the 80's) but never seen them. Another band that pushed the boundaries of music (and just about everything else) and their contributions are incorporated into our music today in ways we may not immediately recognize but are definitely there.

I went to see him in concert with my best friend when I was in high school. It was a tiny venue as he wasn't that well known in the US yet. "Goody Two Shoes" had just hit the US charts. The concert was set up in the old basketball court at the local university. The the stage and crowd didn't even fill the half-court but we were all dancing and it was the most fun I have ever had at a concert! Thanks for the smiles today!

I love Adam Ant! I saw him in concert back in the early 80s. What a great song. Everyone has filled you in on what it's about. There were several highway men in England in the 1700s that used the phrase. They were notorious. But I understand that this is a cultural thing. Our highway men in the wild West didn't use that saying (think stick em up)but it really meant trouble in England.

This was the first album I ever bought at 4 years old.
I saw him the same night of the Ariana Grande bombing. Amazing show even though he stacked it and fell over the monitor at the start. Most would have not continued. The Diddly part is Quoi? As in french. Adam used a lot of French in his lyrics.
Best tunes: Goody Two Shoes, Wonderful, Puss in Boots and
Picasso visita el planeta de los simios (Picasso Visits The Planet Of The Apes).

I have been a fan of Adam and the Ants since I was 8 in 1980!! I have seen him 3 times, once for my 40th birthday twice more. Always said I would see him one day. Stand and deliver is to do with the highway men who would hold up coaches etc and rob the people. In the days of footpads and vagabonds . Absolutely love and loved the 80s . My era my growing up I am a 72 born baby

Adam and the Ants came along as we were in a punk going into new wave music. I think we Brits always enjoy a bit of eccentricity and this felt a little bit rebellious and tongue-in-cheek at the same time. But most of all me and my mates all though Adam Ant was a really pretty boy!

Adam and the Ants were a seminal post-punk group in the UK and made a series of increasingly high-budget and very striking videos, like "Prince Charming" and "Goody Two Shoes". Great production values and one of the most popular uses of the 'Burundi beat' with two drummers
