      they are everything the hall is suppose to be about, absolutely spectacular band that are also absolutely unique and individual and the creativity is suppose to take precedence over the mainstream success and popularity. but we are well past the point where very mediocre but successful bands keep going in while the really interesting bands with big loyal followings get ignored. i fond Cindi and Kate two of the most under rated vocalists of all time.

    The vocal harmonies of Kate Pearson and Cindy Wilson are one of the defining sounds of the B-52s. Kate had the big hair and was playing keyboards. Cindy had the white dress on and joined the vocals mostly for harmonies. You've heard this and Rock Lobster, Time for Planet Claire.

    "Like he was joking, but he was not joking." Oh, he was definitely joking! The big hair and retro '60s look was a big part of the B-52's image; they did it to be weird! They were a little bit punky, a little bit kitschy, and part of the Athens, Georgia sound that came out in the late '70s - early '80s. You would always hear some of their music at every college frat party, back in the day.

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 2 года назад +1

      Well, considering they were part of the "College Radio" scene back in the day, that's no surprise at all. That label applied to some fun, quirky bands in the early to mid 80s which included them, R.E.M., They Might Be Giants, The The, and Violent Femmes (that I can remember, there's probably others that I can't); their music was very popular on various college radio stations throughout the U.S (which was kind of odd in a way, since none of these bands were anywhere close to the mainstream at the time, although B52s and R.E.M. did have commercial success in the late 80s and early 90s).

    The B52's, out of Athens Georgia, were part of "the new wave" music scene, along with Blondie, Talking Heads, GoGos, and so many others that were a tad more musical and less serious than the contemporaneous punk movement...

      I only heard their Wild Planet album because my brother had it when it was fairly new. "Private Idaho" is the only song I heard on the radio back then, but that was maybe a couple years later, and I didn't hear it often. It probably wasn't until the late 80's when I heard their first album. Can't recall if that was before or after Cosmic Thing was released. Wow, I haven't heard this song in probably 30 years. That said, you absolutely MUST listen to "Quiche Lorraine," which is possibly their funniest song.

    The B-52s are an art band hiding under a facade of campy dance party music, 60s clothes, and silly lyrics. Yes, the other woman (the guitarist's sister) can sing. Check out "Give Me Back My Man" for a great example. Also, being from Athens myself, I can tell you that the song "Deadbeat Club" totally captures the vibe in Athens back in the 80s.

      Love to see someone mention Give Me Back My Man! One of my personal favourite B-52s songs- largely because it showcases the ladies' voices so beautifully. I grew up (in the 90s-00s) listening to my parents' best of album, but only discovered this one recently as it wasn't on it.

    This is funny that your watching this retro 80's video but back then the B52's were nostalgic about the retro days of the 50's & 60's. My high school years were in the 80's. Good Times to the B52's.

    Very seriously talented, and very serious about not being serious. The B52s are their whole own genre, there's really no other band like them.
    And they have *so* many great tracks. Goes way deeper than the three or four songs that pop up on first search.

    New Wave was music by Baby Boomers who grew up listening to the radio and buying vinyl and going to concerts.
    They had appreciation for what had come before and weren't trying to make music that was entirely new of distinctly different.
    They put their own personalities into their art and saw every aspect of musical entertainment as something that could bring out their creativity and individual spark.
    They weren't afraid of being drafted and forced to fight an unconstitutional war and if a nuclear war happened wouldn't you be glad you had enjoyed your life?
