    Ryo being in FF Special was a BIG deal back in the day, this was the first crossover in fighting games. People couldn't believe Ryo was in Fatal Fury. His appearance here is basically what started the idea for KOF.

      It's two big achievements for fighting games to be more exact: Ryo in FFS started fg crossovers, and it served to show FF and AOF are set in the same timeline, which was a new world building idea in the early 90s - two different franchises that are directly related. I believe that was fresh even in the context of general gaming and not only in fgs.
      It was all set up: AOF1's console version has an exclusive extended ending that shows more of the connection of the events with FF through Geese. Then finally AOF2 (1994) makes everything clear. And between both releases came FFS (1993) teasing this connection with Ryo's appearance.

  • @datbigdude490
    @datbigdude490 2 года назад +121

    The main reason why Ryo is in Special was to prove fans and players that Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting is in the same universe, especially Geese was the man who started it all

    • @Fishman465
      @Fishman465 2 года назад +12

      Though by the time FF comes around, Ryo'd likely have become Mr. Karate II as AoF two was right before Jeff Bogart is killed.
      KoF instead lines up AoF era Ryo and the Bogards

    • @TheStrategist314
      @TheStrategist314 2 года назад +3

      Not true. The MAIN reason was simply because the creator wanted to mix the roster in future games which is why it’s called a “Dream Match”. It has nothing to do with Geese or any of that lore, that was just an after affect.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 2 года назад +3

      It could have been a different Southtown timeline, for example in the KOF timeline that was invented only later, but no, it was revealed that FF and AOF happen in the same timeline. FF is years after AOF.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 2 года назад +3

      @@Fishman465 Yes, that is the inconsistency of Ryo's appearance in FFS. In AOF2, released a year later, there was no similar mistake and Geese was redesigned to be younger.
      Then in the late 90s Fatal Fury Wild Ambition was made to be a new kind of reboot/remake of the FF story, and it features an old Ryo. That idea reinforced the devs evolution and commitment to lore accuracy.
      It also proved that the devs actively make an exception for KOF as it has its own separate timeline, then in the "true" FF timeline they became serious about being accurate. We just had little opportunities for that, but if there were more AOF in late FF games, they probably would get an "aged" redesign. That is a very interesting thought.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 2 года назад +4

      @@Fishman465 Back to FFS Ryo, to be totally fair that was the early 90s... everything done in AOF and FF was so groundbreaking and experimental, there was no reference available for SNK.
      To give a proper idea: by the time SNK was creating all these innovative ideas of crossovers and shared worlds and pushing forward the notion of fighting game lore, Capcom was still doing nothing but SF2 releases. AOF2, that fully displayed the shared timeline, was released before Super Turbo. And other companies only had one fg title at the time (1992-1993).

      The image of AOF itself was rotting away through the 90s, and following that a kind of gradual loss of respect for the characters. Like it's notable that after KOF 96 the AOF team became surrounded by pure (bad) comedic endings. They are treated as joke.
      But as AOF was still alive and well in the beginning of KOF, look how AOF is portrayed in the KOF 94 opening and overall in the whole game. The AOF team highlighted in the same level of dignity as the FF team. Also they are very strong in 94-95.

It could also be seen in the effectiveness of moves. Kyo, Terry, Ralf, Iori, and Athena were clearly the most effective anchors of their teams. Ryo, to many, was somewhat overshadowed by Robert as Robert has traditionally been the most effective fighter.

      The thing is that the early Ryo was a legend in the SNK world. He was strong in AOF and became much stronger by the time of FF. The perfect canon image of that is in Wild Ambition.
      Then KOF was made and after 95, when the KOF lore really took off, the AOF elements started being kinda badly treated. Since then they are seen as comedic relief material in that world. Like Ryo got hard nerfed particularly when he was op in 94-95, and stayed with his Dan fireball even though the other AOF chars regained long range fireballs later (like Robert in 99), as if he was being targeted and made to look uninteresting on purpose. And almost all their endings since then are for jokes (and not even good jokes).

    If it were not for Ryo being in FF Special there would not be KOF today. It was unheard of to see cross overs in games in fighters back n the 90s. Besides the hidden specials or back then they were called Last Ditch moves, FF Special helped to bring some mechanics to modern day fighters. I remember seeing about Ryo being in FF Special in the SNES game and was super psyched to get him. I thought it was purely a TAKARA exclusive but found out it also in the arcade version as well. Spent SO many quarters trying to get to Ryo but the game was just brutally difficult.

    Laurence is Krausers second in command, or a bodyguard(as if Krauser needs a bodyguard).. Big Bear is Raiden(based off of Big Van Vader).. and if i remember, you cant lose any rounds if you wanna fight Ryo..

    Yo, Justin! You really need to check out Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 - The Newcomers. That game is really something special with its style, presentation, and general game feel. I'm pretty sure it's one of Matt McMuscles favorites; he'll back me up on this one if you ask him.
