This game has more undiscovered secrets than all fighting games during this era combined.
It was so hard to pull off the stage kills
Too bad it was as shitty when it came out as it's now.
Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside, Took Eternal Champions and gave it Crack,, The Most extensive fighting game of that era. Completely underrated and SOo Damn Amazing. The Fatalities put MK to shame, and there were Different types of fatalities for every character, including stage fatalities. So sad to see it go away because of the death of the Sega System.
@@itschillwill thank you. My sentiments exactly. I spent hours as a kid finding all those stage kills and character kills. I still don't think I saw them all
I like how all you really had to do was fight and move around alot and out of nowhere a damn overkill would happen easily
Think about some of the most insanely hard bosses Justin has taken on in these oldschool fighting games. (Geese Howard, General, Mizuchi, Otane Goketsuji, ect) and now know that NONE OF THEM hold a candle to the Eternal Champion and his 5 health bars and "no continues/bad ending if you lose" mechanic. That Justin won speaks volumes of how quickly he can adapt to these games.
He’s fought harder bosses, some of whom you listed, but the fact that he was able to beat the Champion on his first try is unbelievably impressive.
Yeah, The General is STILL WAY HARDER than Eternal Champion. The only real thing that's insanely hard about E.C. is that like Unlimited Match Rugal, you only get one shot to beat him every time you play Arcade Mode but not only is the climb to him difficult but that one fight plays by KOF Rules (in terms of health regeneration) as opposed to Best of Three and as shown, you fight him multiple times.
Yeah, can't wait to see him play the "sequel" and NOW having to deal with the Eternal Champion again... with 9 LIFEBARS... and he's not the only boss in that version (playing on Warrior/Normal or Champion/Hard) as the other one has 8 lifebars and the same rules of match lost = bad ending... at least on that version you can use cheat codes to skip to them if needed).
you can literally use the cop character and sweep him to death. My friend who was shit at fighting games figured it out before me lol.
@@DarkSalmonz First time I beat the Eternal Champion was with Midnight and cheaping him out by turtling until my chi was full enough to use his life absorb special. As a 9 year old, there is no notion of honour or fairness vs CPU, just results.
One of my favorite all time fighting games from childhood. Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side is what he really should have played though. What's funny is watching Justin try to apply modern fighting game logic to this game. Unless you read the instruction manual when this game came out you would be in for a world of hurt not knowing any of the moves or the actual unique mechanics to this series. The chi meter was put in to stop special move spam, Taunting draining the opponent's meter, or the Overkill spots per stage that triggered stage fatalities (Eternal Champions: CFTDS implemented Cinekills and MK-style Fatalities called Vendettas in addition to stage fatalities). If Justin thought that was brutal play the sequel. Not only do you gotta fight the Eternal Champion, you also gotta deal with the Dark Champion. I will say this though, as much as today's fighting games go there isn't much to the story, but this series does have an actually good story with it that kinda makes sense.
I love how Justin was so unprepared for fighting Eternal Champion. Forgetting this was the era of the mega cheap final boss.
Another thing Eternal Champions does not get credit for is having one of if not the best training mode in fighting game history.
Man, that was another time, wasn't it? To be fair, this game was super janky. But, there's something to be said for digging in to the manual and really learning the ins and outs of a game. These days folks will want frame data of a fighting game, but there's no time for that level of detail on an old game like this. That being said, while the mechanics of this game are interesting, the execution definitely sucked. This game was WAY too hard to play and understand!
Yeah, I agree this game had a feeling to it. I remember reading the characters bios with that melancholy song in minor key playing in the background and I remember feeling a little bit invested, which you didn’t really see you in a fighting game of that era.
@@bsiferd Yeah what takes the cake for me that I never paid attention to as a kid is that every character in the game was essentially one of the good guys, even the Eternal. The only REAL major bad guy was the Dark Champion. Too bad we never got that 3rd game in the trilogy to finish the story.
Lmao, MAN i grew up with Eternal Champions, this game is definitely brutal, the only fighting game ever where you're sent back to the previous opponent for losing. What also sucks is that you only get two shots at the Eternal Champion and then it's game over. It's sad but i couldn't beat this game until a few years ago as a fully grown man (by abusing Shadow's "Shadow Mode" move), i was never able to beat it as a kid back in the early 90's. The Sega CD sequel was definitely better, it was faster, had more characters, and had way more brutal fatalities and finishers, it also wasn't as hard. This game is still a classic in it's own right tho and i have a ton of fond (yet frustrating) memories of it.
Was it any worse than the Mk1 arcade endurance rounds
@@EdgeO419 Definitely harder in my opinion, manly because the AI was so much cheaper in Eternal Champions. I never had much trouble beating MK1.
Just be glad you didn’t play the Sega CD version Justin. You have to beat not only the Eternal Champion, but also the Dark Eternal Champion. Both of them with 8 phases and you have to beat all 8 phases with one health. It’s literally hell.
And yet somehow 12 year old me could beat it in one go.....after months of learning how to cheese the A.I. 😂 When you can only get your parents to buy like two games per year you master EVERYTHING 😛 Glad those days are over
@@themancalledben2731 That game was tough, but I loved the new combo system it had and the cinekills were cool.
I'm not even going to lie. I've NEVER seen that boss before and I was on the edge of my seat watching Justin fight the shark form!!! I FELT that pain Justin! The stakes were too high in this video!!!
I can't stand playing this game but the visuals are so good and the Fatals were extremely detailed and brutal, music wasn't bad either, but what a time capsule of a game this is, absolutely pure 90's.
But it is terrible to play
Not even nostalgia could save this game.
It needed a sequel to remake the mechanics. But the time wasnt right for that.
@@carlosaugusto9821 I recall at the time, one review said it was "at least as good as Street Fighter 2". This game was one of the more polarising of it's day. Due to it's difficulty, more than anything else.
@@carlosaugusto9821 it did get a a sequel that was more of a remake on Sega CD that was much better, and had a ton more finishers.
Ok, i was genuinely laughing my ass off at your reactions at losing and being sent back 2 stages. (props to the editor aswell). Thanks for the laughs at playing this oldie!
Eternal Champion played like he got eternity to play. Loved the music on this game
I absolutely love the lore, characters and setting of this game! *BUT JESUS IS IT HARD.* 🤣👌
I've never heard Justin so worried than when he noticed the Eternal Champion's stage timer didn't tick down. "Oh... Nah! Wait... 99 seconds? _I CAN'T LAME HIM OUT!?!"_ 😆I know it's for Halloween, but I didn't expect the fighting game to give us such a good scare!
Hope to see you play the Mega CD revision/sequel to Eternal Champions, Omen of Sorrows, and (depending on how much progress its made by then) Umbral Core next year (maybe an anime fighter or two, like Melty Blood or Fate Unlimited Codes too), but man, the games this year were _super fun_ to see! MK4, Clayfighter, Terrordrome - all awesome vids. And man, I still can't believe you played Battle Monsters... *AND THAT THE FINAL BOSS OF ETERNAL CHAMPIONS HAS THE SAME "ELEMENTAL SWITCHING" GIMMICK,* lol. 😄That was crazy!
"I feel like I'm doing something wrong."
Yeah, playing Eternal Champions! 😂
Lmao! 🤣🤣🤣
Also: The AI cheats everytime and can make special attacks with no energy, while you can't
It's a good game dude
Eternal Champions is unforgivingly hard.
there is a fanmod of this game which balances the difficulty
This and The New Challengers were part of my fighting game childhood. It was hard as hell but I enjoyed it especially the fatalities.
This game really comes into it's own in the Sega CD sequel. Plus, I haven't heard Justin yell like that since he beat Gill on max difficulty.
So cool to see Justin play Eternal Champions. I was waiting for Trident to say "Freak" at 6:28. 😆 One of the coolest taunts ever. Justin's retort made it even better, "You call me freak all you want I'm winning."😂 I was hoping for a stage fatality. They were all pretty good. Watching you play through the sequel Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side would be awesome. It is even harder.
I remember the ads for this in comic books and Inquest.
The sprites in this game are gorgeous
Ahhhh....good ol' Eternal Champions :D
That last boss though....arrrrrghhhhh!!!
I feel your frustration, lol!
THIS GAME WAS BRUTAL...AND AHEAD OF ITS TIME. WHAT SEGA "TRIED TO ACHIEVE" COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT. ALL THE HIDEEN MOVES, FATALITIES, LEVEL FATALITIES ETC. IT HAD POTENTIAL BUT LIMITED BY HARDWARE ETC. ID HONESTLY LOVE TO SEE THIS GAME REMADE.
They filed for a trademark on a new EC game on December 6.
@@IcyTorment oh hell ya!!! I hope they do it just and not some slapped together crap in UE5
FINALLY! This game doesn't get enough love.
Not great gameplay, but one of the first fighting games with a coherent story.
I wish you played "Challenge From The Dark Side".
The fatalities in that one are intense.
Eternal Champions was the first game I played where the taunts were insults lmfao
I never saw someone beat this shit too. Good fun Justin Wong, thank you for this content, made my work day.
One of the most underrated fighting game series of all time. It's up there with MK and KI as one of the best Western fighting game series. This game deserves a reboot.
The series creator, Michael Latham, tried to revive it a few years back but Sega shot it down. He sadly passed away in 2021, unable to bring his vision to life.
I agree this Treasure deserves recognition it's very rare I don't want it to be forgotten
Everything about this game is a tragedy.
Sega filed a new trademark for the franchise on December 6. So it looks like it's finally happening.
The backstories of all the characters in this game were amazing.
Ah... The 90's...
LOVE EC!!!! One of the most under rated fighting games EVER. PERIOD.
more like one of the worst fighting games ever
@@piratesephiroth Made A LOT of money for Sega. One of the most popular games on the Gen - and that's even with MK1 absolutely k* it on the Gen. This came out the same time as Sunset Riders and Gunstar Heroes, and it still was a commercial success.
At the time, people wanted a real challenge- the other fighting games were just "too easy", so EC satisfied that urge. There were widespread calls for an arcade version, but Sega didn't do it.
It was so popular, Bone Thugs and Harmoney sampled the Eternal Champion's tune for "Eternal" on the "E. 1999 Eternal" hit album.
@@domainmojo2162 It sure made of a lot of money but Sega also spent a fortune not only making it but also advertising it everywhere.
It definitely wasn't profitable enough.
They even tried 2 spinoffs that sucked too, Chicago Syndicate and X-Perts.
Eternal Champions is my jam from my childhood, but yeah the game is HARD. Especially that last boss. Wish this would get the remake treatment!
There's something about seeing someone struggling with a cheap game that makes me laugh uncontrollably.
This game is not cheap. Lol classic
Ur probably a horrible person
@@devonshelton1658 the eternal champion though
i love eternal champions, good memories
What is great about this game is the story and the characters' backgrounds. I fell in love with the potential of this game. I hope it gets a new installment or reboot, and I'm not the only one. No doubt you are a FG legend, you finished the game in your first session. I still can't finish it and I've been playing it for months LOL. Great job Justin.
That last boss got the ultimate counter to the King of Lame lol
I just found out Bone Thugs "E. 1999 Eternal" was heavily inspired by Eternal Champions including song samples from this game.
I LOVED this game when I was in my teens!! The music is STILL some of my favorite on the Genesis. My cousin Bree would spend every weekend at our house, and we'd stay up all night drinking Surge and playing it. And Vectorman. Lol. 💜
Is that the same countdown music as Sonic the Hedgehog drowning music? LMAOOOOOOO
Yeah, Justin uses alot of sound effects in his edits
I remember constantly seeing ads for Eternal Champions in Game Pro for the longest time and wanting to play it. A buddy finally got it and we had an absolute blast, wish they released it again with good netcode.
it looks like the game is already in fightcade
I got this game bundled with my Genesis when I got it for Christmas in '95, and ended up falling in love with it despite all its jank. Excellent job on beating the Eternal Champion your first try! I've only ever beaten this game legit twice in my life.
I had Eternal Champions back in the day for the Sega Genesis! I remember this game was crazy as all outdoors! The character designs were unique and offered something different than what Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were offering. Also the stage fatalities were f*cking insane!
Jank and unfair stuff aside, I thought this game was awesome as a kid. Crazy characters and stages, cool music and then there's all the fatalities and secrets. The SEGA CD had even more stuff, but I never got to play it.
Seeing this again brought back many happy memories of playing VS with my older brother a lot. He loved Larcen, Shadow and Trident as his main picks, I liked Midnight, Jetta and Xavier.
The problem is the yin yang meter. It’s supposed to go down 1/4 every time you use a special move. The meter will turn flashing circle ⭕️ to let you know you can’t use special moves until it fills up to at least 1/4. It supposed to balance things out but the CPU completely ignores the mechanic and uses special moves endlessly while you cannot
Had this shit on genesis back in the day. Game was so damn hard it made MK2 look like a cake walk.
*Was Begging Justin years to play this! Glad he finally did!*
i was too. since i noticed he likes to play hard games. i knew this one would give him a hard time till he figured out the bread and butter moves. hes a evil genius when it comes to figuring out a.i. weaknesses. lmao
Hidden Gem, reminder that this is a Sega Genesis and not an Arcade. It was a good take for a home console competing against SF, MK and others at that time.
This is the first fighting game I ever got for home console. I asked for SF2 and for some reason I got this for Christmas. I ended up loving this game, and to this day I put it in my top 3 favorite Sega Genesis games ever.
I remember seeing this on magazines and thinking "Wow, looks cool! Nice lore!"... When I finally played it... holy crap. I think it is one of the worst if not the worst fighting game I ever played. But the intro song is amazing lol. Your daughter at your back, so cute and fun. Nice gameplay.
AWWW HELL YAH!!!! i was begging you justin to face the pain i once had to deal with many moons ago. you did what i never could back in the day. once i lost to the final boss and made me start from scratch i was like ok im good not beating this game anymore. years later emulator and save states saved the day. you should see how u do on the sequel to this game called eternal champions challenge from the dark side. on this one u might have missed the neat stage fatalities there is on this game. challenge from the dark side has like triple amount of finishing moves and stage fatalities. hard story mode. i wish someone would make sequels to this game. all the characters were interesting. music was very catchy.
This was one of my favorites back in the day even tho I only can beat it with one character
Was it Xavier? lol
Who was it
@@The_Humble_Hurricane I beat it with R.A.X only
@@MisterX867 naw R.A.X
The level with Larcen is brutal because I use to get hit with the Tommy Gun out of nowhere from a PT Cruiser. LMAO
These games are so damn hard. I even downloaded a hack that supposedly normalized the A.I. I still ended up getting smoked like a 🚬
"Wait for what? I'm about to win. I can't lose this!" - famous last words
A friend had this game in the 7th grade and watching this gave me flashbacks I had repressed for many many years. I never was able to finish it myself. At least I am laughing about it now lol.
Sega hyped the crap out of this game back in the day. I remember seeing ads in gaming magazines and comic books that said it puts Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat to shame.
"Fight!"
"No. Turtle."
Little Justin know he’s about to meet the worst and multiple phase boss fight
Love Eternal Champions! Part 2 is sooo much fun and the finishers/overkills/cinekills were over the top. There was supposedly a spiritual successor to this but I haven't heard about it in a few years called Eternal Successors. There's some concept art of the stages online.
This game used to scare me as a kid. I remember reading the lore in the little booklet that came with the game and being scared 😂!
This game as well as Challenge from the Dark Side are 2 of my all time favorites. the; Vendettas, Cinekills, Stage Fatalities. Yeah it can be very difficult to execute them correctly, but back in the 90's it was so cool to see. Ahh, the sweet, sweet memories.
Wow. I don't think I've ever heard someone say they didn't like Eternal Champions before. I'm glad there appears to be a new EC game in the works at Sega.
???? For real? Could of sworn they killed it in favor of Virtua Fighter
Loved this game on the megadrive, but the mega CD version is the best
Mega/Sega CD Eternal Fighters is uncensored. On The Megadrive/Genesis is censored
Thanks JWong for the upload. I had asked for this game a while back.
honestly loved watching you feel like every single one of us that has played this game. I actually have this game on saga and played it with my kids. I'm surprised no one explained the 3 button specials
Oh I’ve WAITED for this one. Ai is super cheap and in at least one of the versions you go back a fight every time you lose
This game was good in my memory. And i see now that s9me things should remain memories. Thank you for reading the chat and suffering thru our suggestion. Lol
6:51 Doing some Aris yell while playing as Aris
I adored the stories behind each character when read which gives the game a sense of emotion, you as well as everyone else has the will to live again. However there could only be one Eternal Champion. There was news from the orginal creator looking back into it around 2017 on SEGAnerds, if this was brought to the modern time just imagine how wild it can be.
This should have been another Jankyard episode lmaooooo EC was always like a budget SF mixed with MK but somehow managed to take the worst aspects from both and combine them into one terrible package 😂😂😂
this game was by far the game where i did felt the powerlessness to a absolute
I like the guy in the chat who says "a round for each window in the back?"
because that was my exact same reaction when I saw that as a kid lmao
@ 11:40 Your commitment to the theme is most impressive. An' yeah Bro, i *told* you this was a horror game. Especially when you main Larcen and your best freind mains Midnight and learns that damnable 12 hitter no quitter! o.o @ 13:54 *runs screaming trom the room*
Glad i didn't played this back in the days. My controller would of been shattered!
Normally on Jank games, you fight against the jank.. not the fighters themselves...
But fighting this amount of jank and dealing 5 health bars damage in one round.... is crazy!
And youngans sometimes have the gall to question us ancestors about the Game Genie....
It was really nice meeting you at EVO today. Thanks for the picture as well
As a 90’s kid, this was one of my favorite fighting games of the era, tied with Mortal Kombat and Street Fighters. Enjoyed it more than Mk back than, sadly this one did not have sequels, I would have loved it in the new generation consoles
I was trying to remember this game just the other day! Trying to explain to my coworker about a non mortal Kombat game that had fatalities.
Finally you got to one of my favourite games from my childhood
This game needs to come back
Too bad SEGA hates this
Sadly, Sega made a choice. Supporting Virtua Fighter instead. Whether that was the _right_ one. Your mileage may vary.
Oh my God you really hitting all the old classics I couldn't remember this game. This game is indeed one of creepiest games I ever played especially when you play the story mode and hear each person backstory.
This was a great game. I didn’t watch your whole video yet but the fact you got mad pieced up by Shadow like that is hilarious.
That was great 😂 i love how you found the perfect cheese and excuted flawlessly at the end.
Almost my entire life I’ve hummed to music on ur 2nd fight..I never knew where I heard it from as a child…BUT IT WAS THIS GAME!!! I cannot believe I finally found the tune I’ve been humming
FINALLY YOU PLAY IT!! YES
The Eternal Champion called out Justin's playstyle lol
Yo! I remember suggesting this game on one of your other videos - can't believe you played this!
good to see it wasn't just kid-me that was immensely frustrated by this game.
It's a game that requires a time of dedication. Eternal Champions is one of the most difficult fighting games. It looks like it follows a traditional Street Fighter II but it's completely out of the curve and that's great. More options than we had in a fever like this - that was queuing in Arcades. Today, everything is more accessible and much the same. They are different styles and that all must be respected.
The game was initially thought to be played on Activator, a SEGA Genesis accessory that you play through sensors. That's why the game's commands are so weird but nothing that well calibrated controls or a workout don't help.
I should've mentioned to Justin that slash can bat away projectiles.
Logged a lot of hours on this one in the 90s. Xavier was my guy.
The soundeffects seem to be a mixture of Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition and The Immortal
When of my Sega Channel favorites. That is when Sega Channel would work.
The music goes in on eternal champion tho lol
Man I remember as a kids, I struggled so bad against that boss
Like the NiGHT into Dreams outro music !
I LOVED Eternal Champions as a kid. It had the fatalities and crazy characters. It was awesome.
I loved this game's aesthetic when i was young. But actually playing it? Good god it was hard. I remember first trying it on the Sega Channel.
Holy crap core memory unlocked. I used to play this hell out of this game when i was young
This was my favorite fighting game for a long time, you can make it harder with stage traps and crazy stuff. He's not using the taunt to cut the AI's special from what I see in this video, and he's using the most BASIC fighter in game, punch, club repeat.
Oh my days after a year of asking this g plays it. Yeah boi pure 🔥
Are you aware of the finisher moves? You have to stand in a certain position relative to the background and perform a specific move. It's different for each stage. You can knock your enemy into the fire and watch them burn alive, you can kick your enemy into a spinning fan and watch them get dismembered and, in front of that theater, you can make your enemy be gunned down in a drive-by.
This game needs another addition to the series! It was actually so good! Would love to see it updated with modern graphics.
I picked this game up when it first came out, and I honestly loved it. I even had a 7-11 Eternal champions Slurpee cup.
When I sold my Sega in 96 I sold every game but this. Still have it. Special game for me. But it's hilarious watching Justin get ruined by
how brutally hard it is. Art of Fighting 2 has nothing on this! Lol!
This game was fire back in the day but it was easy to rage quit because going back two levels is brutal. Especially with that bs final boss.
no way. I played this with friends back in my childhood. this brings back memories. thanks Justin!
