    Hello Joey! I was a former speed skater in the late '90s, recently I built a new pair of speed skates but the bearings are not performing that well. I was wondering what kind of skate bearing would you recommend since I've been out of the loop for so long. Thank you!

      ABEC 11 are very good, or you could go the full hog & get Ceramic, which are probably the best you're gonna get. If you don't wish to spend too much, go for ABEC 9, these are also good for speed.

      If you know someone who works on vacuum cleaners grab some of those even used ones are real good. As a comparison compared to new ceramic bearings they're on par imo, look at this way they roll real well. They are also able to be stripped i.e completely pulled apart. If someone you know does scrapping they'll most likely have some armatures you can get the bearings off. Some electrical motors also use 608's

      How much money you got to burn? You still won't find much better than Bones Swiss ceramics, but they still cost an arm and a leg; feel more expensive than they were back then to me, but I could be misremembering. At the end of the day, I'd recommend going with anything ceramic and rebuildable/serviceable if you have the budget and want something that's high performance and long-lasting... I find my no-brand ABEC 7s from inline warehouse go fast enough for me, but I'm not a speed skater.

      @@reubenabela3063 your very correct. i can be speedskating in a pack of cyclists going 27 mph, and then hear...light up... i have no way of stopping..i pull out to the left and sometimes need to make the right hand turn. i also ride, but when i am in great shape and fast i speed skate with groups of cyclists. most groups accept me, some less experienced groups are not comfortable. i pick and choose group rides depending on what type of training i am doing. . i occasionally skate with cyclists in long distance 50 mile Charity type events, they are not as fast as a Sat Group. Its not common to see a speed skater hang with any cyclist group, but, once they see i am experienced, and not easily going to get dropped.. mile by mile they have more respect for my effort and accept me as part of group.

    Some facts after a few years of intense urban skating.
    Hardness 88A is The One for cities.
    I'm using 110 88A for all sorts of stops including powerslide, powerstop and hockey stop, but it took me a few years to master all these. So at the beginning I was using the T stop. In a few years average wheel diameter went from 110 to 105. This is because the wheels are really hard and don't wear easily. Don't hesitate to T stop on hardness 88A!

I'm currently doing 30km tours with 17km/h average speed and if I give it my all for a really fast "I can only do this for 20 seconds"-sprint I don't get above 27, which looks like a chill speed in this video. The season talk is so real. Its been almost a year since i consistently starting inline skating and I'm finally getting a feel for things i've practiced on and off for the last year. We all have one side that we're super comfortable on when it comes to transitioning to a backward skating and its encouraged to always practice your weaker side so i've been doing that but its never felt natural until literally yesterday. Same with Soul slide, I've tried it on and off but i literally only was able to do it yesterday. I just love how your body starts to remember and acclimatize to certain movements. Nothing beats consistently skating and actually practicing little by little.

    I think it's not obvious that bike experiences more drag than skater. To me it's either comparable or the opposite since on a bike their feet are tucked in so the lower portion of the area is that of the bike (tire/frame) which is more narrow and compact than both our legs on the pushoff.

      When you have plenty of correct bearings in the market like abec 7, abec 9, ilq 7, ilq 9, it matters less than a good diet, a good body mass index, regular training with effective rest. Don't choose fancy bearing designs, and maintain them in good condition.

    As a long term bike racer and skater, I can say there has to be some major power output on the skates to go that fast. Riding at the front in a race or training, no wind, 25-27 mph I am usually putting out around 400-450 watts to go that fast. Don't know if power can be measured on skates (maybe on treadmill) but I suspect the power output is similar. The issue on skates for me I build up lactic acid a lot faster on the skates. In short distances I can go faster on skates (38 mph unassisted but a very short time) than the bike (34-36 in un-assisted sprint max 20-30 seconds). Bottom line is you pro and ex-pro speed skaters are beasts!

But, I have compared my speed on skates relative to my mountain bike...same path using Strava...and I'm easily 1-1/2 mph faster on my skates no problem. It's surprising, but true. @Artemis_Prix 3 месяца назад

      @markbraverman8267 Fair point. I will mention I'm going all out on the mountain bike, but your point is well taken. Re other bikers, I can keep up with hybrid bikes, but if someone's riding a road bike, it's nearly impossible to keep up on my skates unless they're not very skilled.
      When I go out on trails with my friends, they're on their bikes, and I'm on my skates. That arrangement works out just fine. I prefer it that way. Try it and see how you do. You may like it as well.

    In what way does having someone BEHIND you cause more drag?

    • @JoeyMantiaSkates
      @JoeyMantiaSkates  3 месяца назад +4

      Because I weave side to side when skating there's a little drag from the 'draft bubble' being inconsistent. If I was on a bike and stayed perfectly behind him then it would have the opposite effect as far as I understand it.
      My gut tells me that even if the net drag is still in his favor by me being behind him (with the weaving), there would still be a small yoyo that maybe he'd feel and would want to avoid if doing TT training.
      I'm going to do some research and get back on that though. In the end, whether it's a net positive or net negative, I respect the fact he doesn't want anything affecting him when training

    • @tanantish
      @tanantish 6 дней назад

      @@JoeyMantiaSkates I suspect it's because TTs are a solo discipline so if he's doing some serious training runs he's trying to lock in on what kind of conditions he'd be racing in. Having someone behind is something that's potentially off-putting (if he can hear your cadence for example), or a subconscious worry that he's going to need to consider your line if he's needing to pass someone in front, or brake hard etc.
      That's not generally (okay. it isn't) a mental load in a TT so you can zone in on the narrow cone in front and focus on cadence, breathing, power targets, all that other jazz as there's never anyone behind - in this context, I suspect that's more likely the reason he was feeling affected by having you there.

      I really like good speed wheels- 4x110. Speed is what I grew up doing so that's still the most fun style of skating, even in urban type environments

    Rollerblades... at the time i used to try these all my friends removed the 2 wheels in the middle ... less friction = more speed and also was a must for grinding and tricks etc ...
    besides the tricks, deos it really 2 out of 4 wheels roller blades perform better than a all 4 wheels ?

    • @JoeyMantiaSkates
      @JoeyMantiaSkates  3 месяца назад +2

      I'm not sure exactly, but my initial thought is that if you have your body weight distributed over 2 wheels vs 4 wheels, the 2 wheel setup would compress more and actually have more friction. In a simple roll test I think you would find that to be the case. The other things to consider are: 1. making that big of a gap between wheels will lower performance because there will be noticeably more flex in the frame and 2. because each wheel is taking on double the load (probably more when you consider the distance between them), you will likely slip a lot more than having all the wheels on your skate
      in the world of aggressive and doing tricks it makes a lot of sense, but for performance and efficiency I'm not sure
