I am brand new to teaching online. Obviously, a lot of us are scrambling to learn how to do this with the Covid 19 situation. Thank you so much for your video. I have a much better understanding of it and will be sharing these things with my district task force as we try to help our teachers continue educating our students during these last few months of school. Bless you!!
Thanks Nicole! Made this a few weeks before everything ramped up so just glad it's out there and able to help so many more people than expected right now! Good luck! :)
Thank you, well done! Not teaching languages but 7th grade math due to school shut downs. Do not want to just use stock videos. Math modeling is such an important part of learning and understanding new math concepts especially prealgebra in 7th grade. I have been invited and used Zoom as a learner. Thank you for the best quick breakdown. So well done and easy to understand. Your ease tells me this is a, program you really utilize and endorse. My students will thank you and even my grandkids who I plan to work with using this platform.
Thanks Linda! Glad the video helped. Such a weird time right now, huh?! You can definitely transfer many of these features for maths lessons. Like you say about the modelling, the whiteboard will be great for that! Good luck! :)
Thank you so much for this. I recently set up a Spanish exchange Meetup in my city that has had to stop due to corona virus. I have wanted to move the group to telemeeting and this looks great, especially the rooms if the group conversations get too big.
Hello from California ! Because of the coronavirus, our school might switch on-site courses to online ones within a week or so and it's so nerve-wracking. So I'm very thankful for your detailed and easy to follow video !!
I am a webmaster for a genealogy society. Which goes to show you are not too old to learn new things. I found your video very helpful in using share screens and chat. Good work... please do more videos on zoom.
Thank you so much Lindsay. Now with COVID-19 I must switch my art classes to online Video Conferencing. So far your introduction has helped me so much and making Zoom look like the winner for me to start.
I am excited to subscribe to English Online lessons through Zoom so I have maximized on my Platform and I also registered for Skype and Webroom so I am really excited about my lessons through Zoom .
Thank you Lindsay. Really helpful. Question - is there a way of seeing the faces of all the participants when you drop into screen share mode for example when the whiteboard is up or when you're sharing a picture? So that we can discuss the picture that we are all looking at but see each other at the same time?
This was so helpful! My private school in Tokyo is starting this week on Zoom. I still feel extremely nervous about how it will all go but this video helped so much! Quick question, once the students leave breakout rooms- will they still be assigned to the same ones if you do it again? I want to do team games but I'm worried my teams will shuffle or need to be reassigned every time.
we're under heavy pressure to switch to online sync teaching. thanks to covid-19. mine are technical stuff, harder to deal. anyway, take care in England.
Fantastic video, thank you so much! Do you happen to know whether you can prepare slides on the whiteboard in advance (e.g. with a scanned copy of a course book page or exercise)?
Good question...I've never tried this but just did a quick test and it looks like it does save your whiteboard screen. Also, I didn't show this in the video, but on that main sharing options screen, at the top there's 'Advanced' and 'Files', so if you have a coursebook saved as a file, you can share that too (and should still be able to annotate etc I think!) :)
Have you already checked the box for "share audio"? Might be worth doing a test or two with someone you know. Try with/without headphones, try different websites to stream video etc...lastly, it could be a matter of internet connection, especially now the whole world is using Zoom!
Thanks so much Lindsay. I enjoyed watching your video. I'm an art teacher and need to figure out how to teach art via zoom lately. And your video is very helpful! I saw you are using a big mic. Do you have any recommendation or advice on Mic ? Thanks.
You don't need a big mic, but an external (USB) mic will always be better than built-in one. I use Rode NTB (I think that's what it is!) but I've heard good things about Blue Yeti, and I used to use Samson Meteorite. :)
Hi Lindsay, great video..can you get all participants to speak at the same time? I'm saying this as I wish to teach music online and so we can play a duet for example or better still I conduct my whole orchestra in the comfort of their homes!! any help would be ace! Thanks x
Hello! So, yes, all students can be unmuted and able to speak at once, like a regular conversation in a classroom setting, which is great. Someone asked the other day about singing...I think (in theory!) if you all wore headphones it *might* work, but...there may be a 1 second/split second delay so I'm not sure...! Definitely worth a try - let me know how it goes. Good luck! :)
Hi Lindsay, which zoom plan do I need to give group lessons? The free plan is only for meetings up to 40 minutes but I'm curious about what you use. Thanks in advance!
Hey there, first off, thank you for the video! Great job! Chat room feature looks great. I have a question about the chat room feature maybe you can help me with. I understand how you made the separate chat rooms and assigned the participants. Once I have completed that stem, can I address everyone while they are in their separate chat rooms simultaneously or do I have to enter each chat room individually to speak to that specific chatroom?
Great question! So as far as I know, you'll need to hop into each chatroom to share the same message, but you can close rooms and bring people back into the main room. One worth testing out I think! :)
Thank you for sharing. I’m just starting with Zoom so this is perfect. I am having trouble sharing a Kindle book with my students. Is there a special way to do that? Also, I’m using a computer, and they’re on an IPad. There is some lag time when I share using the whiteboard feature, and I’m wondering if that’s b/c our devices are different.
Kindle book...hmm.. I think you would be able to share if you had the Kindle book open on a tablet/iPad screen maybe? Don't know about the deices being different, it might also be connection speeds - both internet and potentially Zoom. I know Zoom has seen a huge increase in users lately! Not sure on exactly the reason for the lag.
Hi Lindsay can you use zoom with an external digital tablet so lets say i wanted to draw something on the tablet and then share it on zoom while i am using it?
Yes! Plug your tablet into the computer and see if Zoom lists it when you bring up the "Share" options. If it's there, you can share it. I show a quick example of this in the video with Memrise, but you could use a drawing app on the tablet as well. Don't know if all tablets will work across all computers! :)
Hi Lindsay. Thank you for this. Have to now tutor online and, as you said, am finding it a very scary prospect! I haven't tried my first lesson yet but how can I set it up so that I can see a student's annotations?
I teach EFL. If the students add their translation above an English word, for example, in an article I've uploaded, can the students and I download that document with their information they've added? If yes, how?
Hi Jacki, Yes! So the way to do this is by using screenshare. You'll see a 'save' button on the very right end of the black control panel at the top of the screen. When you click that it saves as an image file! :)
Do you find that the free version server host is good/reliable enough? Have you ever had any issues with reliability, especially now that it seems as the whole world is in quarantine and turning to online solutions for teaching? Thank you for your hard work :)
Great question! The free version is great. I believe you can still use all, or most of, the features. The main difference is you have max 40 minute calls with groups of 3 or more. I've never had reliability issues with Zoom! :)
Thank you for this, Lindsay. Corona has closed our schools here in Switzerland, so as from tomorrow we (private language school) are going to start online teaching. Zoom seems the favourite :) Your video is really helpful. A question: I feel I need the whiteboard, is that in Zoom or is that on your computer? Thank you
Hey, sorry to hear about the sudden change. Yes, the whiteboard is built-into Zoom! :D The only ones that will vary from computer to computer is depending on what tabs you have open, and also if you have iPad/phone plugged in/AirPlay. Glad the video helped! :)
Hi Lindsay, Since the coronavirus outbreak, I've been forced into moving my courses online. I knew a few of the things you were talking about, but your explanation of the annotation key and the use of Zoom for FB and RUclips live were things I didn't know about. Thank you for the video and keep up the good work. Best wishes from Germany, Tommy
Good question! You can set up a password for each meeting, but there's nothing to stop them from sharing the password either. I've never had a problem with this, so you should be ok! :)
@@LindsayDowLanguages thanks so much I will check those out. So I would need to make it password accessible in order to charge through a checkout service correct?
Not necessarily. It's a good idea to ask for email at checkout. Then you can email meeting ID and password before the lesson. They weren't compulsory when I made this video pre-corona! ;)

So relieved to see other teachers who suddenly need to become familiar with online teaching tools due to closed schools. I'm not the only one!
Definitely not alone in this! :)
Your explanations are simple and clear. The pace is good. You have a way of teaching that's fit for novices like me. Thanks so much. Please make some more videos.
Thank you, glad it was helpful, Apisak! :)
Excellent introduction. Ran my first one-to-one on Zoom today but having watched your video I’d now be happy teaching a Group. Thanks!
