I like to think of it that way:
All the adventures in the previous Monkey Island games did happen, but after Lechuck died in Tales of Monkey Island, Guybrush was truly freed from fate. Time passed and the era of pirates eventually ended. Guybrush ended up working for Stan, but became bored. To escape his boredom, he decided to relive his past youth through one last imaginary adventure in Stan's amusement park. This allowed him to say goodbye to his old nemesis Lechuck and his life of piracy and finally move on with his life, after which his son was born. He never reveals the secrets because he wants his son to enjoy his youth and live as many experieces as he can before it's too late.
(The reason why Elaine is so sweet and understanding in this game is because she understands the crisis her husband is going through, and is thus trying to help him overcome it the best way she can: by being supportive)
I'm still a bit disappointed by the ending, but it's easier to stomach it that way.

I want to say that I respect the creativity of Ron Gilbert's team and such... that I was warned by Elaine about how the 'Secret' wouldn't be up to my expectations... so I lowered my expectations. Not low enough, I guess. In of itself, the tshirt would've been a fun joke, but the park was too much, too on-the-nose.
Basically, return to Monkey Island felt like "The Force Awakens", like someone was just trying to redo the beats of a classic, hoping that would be enough.
It was a fun game, but I feel like "Tales of Monkey Island" gave me better closure.

This simple fact absolutely killed the game for me, I wanted the intro to actually explain the ending of MI2 in the way of kid Guybrush puzzling his way out of this weird curse that Lechuck put him into and escaping to Melee Island or something like that, not this BS parody that the intro was of the MI2 ending.

    @JayJay-uw9tt Год назад +36

The game is a 10/10 up until the very end when Guybrush solves the wheel puzzle and enters the final chamber. To be honest, I was prepared for the Secret to never be revealed in the style of Pulp fiction, or even better, Guybrush defeating Lechuck but hanging on a cliff and having to drop the chest with the Secret to save himself, then Elaine coming to rescue him like in Monkey 2 but slipping and Guybrush having to choose between saving her or keeping the chest and having to drop the chest to save her in the end. All those would have been great and satisfying. Even telling the silly ending to his kid but after Elaine and Jr leave, and he is reflecting on his life sitting on the bench, the camera zooms in and we go back into his memories and the final confrontation with LeChuck and we discover that the real ending is so traumatic that he chose to tell his kid the silly one. Worst of all, the whole game sets up the story to be one of obsession over the past so Guybrush having to sacrifice the Secret, in the end, is fitting to the narrative elements that are already there! But instead, they are dropped for a meta ending.
Instead, Ron decides to rob the player of one final puzzle and a lengthy confrontation with LeChuck and gives the player ANOTHER "it was all a dream ending" like in Thimbleweed Park. In this case, I don't think it implies the world of Monkey Island never existed but Ron robs the player of a rewarding ending and tells an idiotic one instead in the same way Guybrush tells a silly ending to his kid who also, like the player, feels robbed of a real ending. After Thimbleweed park's pathetic ending, I lost faith in Gilbert but decided to give him another chance with Return to Monkey Island and for 90% of the game he delivered. The story, humour, dialogues and characters, up until the very end, are great, but the ending makes the game go from a 10/10 to a disappointment of the year/10.

I understand what Ron and the crew were trying to do here: Yes, we've all grown up and still clinging to past glory that seems ever so elusive but, man, it could've been done in a much more satisfying way. In a way that brings some sort of closure or resolution to either this game or to the series as a whole. I was on board through the whole thing until the end when everything went sideways. I'd take LeChuck's explanation to MI2 from Curse any day over this ending. Such wasted potential. And it hurts too since right up till the end the game is actually pretty good, almost a worthy threequel.

Ron Gilbert is truly the George Lucas of video games. He had a good original idea 30 years ago, but he has changed over the years, as we all have, and it's spelled out for us that he changed his game making because on that.
Here's the problem... the fans don't want that. We don't want a metaphor about recapturing those great times... we want to actually do it! Yeah, yeah... the moral is don't try, it will only lead to disappointment. That's a cop out.
I live by a motto: "I may not be as good as I once was, but I can be as good once as I ever was."
In other words, we all get older, slower, life takes it's toll... but if we want it bad enough, we can succeed in living our reams one more time.
Gilbert obviously didn't think he could live up to the incredible demand of concluding the story with a definitive ending... so he didn't idnt bother to try.
The thing is, most of us don't really care what the secret is. What we care about is a proper ride into the sunset for characters they we have loved for 30 years.
I though for sure we were going to get it. As the game was unfolding, I would have bet $1,000 that they were telling a story about unhealthy obsession and having to choose between what really matters.... love, friends, health, responsibility, kindness, etc. vs. pursuing your own selfish desires that leave nothing behind but sadness and isolation.
The blind obsession Guybrush showed as he was relentlessly chasing down b LeChuck in the final sequence... I was POSITIVE it was all leading to a moment of sacrifice for Elaine where Guybrush wakes up, let's the secret go, saves Elaine, and closes out is story by looking at his son and Elaine and saying: "I never found out what kind of secret treasure was in that chest... but I learned that your mom was more valuable than anything that could have been in that chest... and then your mom gave me most valuable treasure in all of the seven seas... you.
Then it can end almost the same exact way. Guybrush Jr. Complaining about the sappy ending and asking what "REALLY" happened. With Elaine whispering the details of their next adventure, and Guybrush smiles and says he will meet them both at the docks in just a minute...
Then he opens the scrapbook and says: "Darn. I'm out of room in the scrapbook. He looks at a few key moments from the franchise, then he turns to the last page. There is the picture of Elaine and Guybrush, a pic Pregnant Elaine, a pic of Baby Guybush Jr., a pic of Guy Jr. and Chuckie laughing in the park...
And finally, Guybrush looks at a photo in his hand of himself, Elaine and Jr. all sitting on the park bench... then he says: "Ah, here we go. I'll just take this photo out of the scrapbook." He takes out unknown photo and adds the photo of his family at the park. Then he closes the scrapbook and walks to meet his family.
The camera pans over the park benc and we can now see that Guybrush left the photo that he removed from the book laying on the bench. The camera closes in on the forgotten photo and it's a photo of Guybrush and LeChuck crossing swords, with the secret chest under LeChuck's arm... and that's the final shot. Cue end credits.
It perfectly symbolizes the glory days, the adventure, the thrill, the nostalgia... while also reminding us about what really matters in life and how sometimes you have to let selfish ambitions go to find what matters most.
Not sure why THAT wasn't the ending, but I think most of us agree, that ending would have been a MILLION times better than what we got.

      @Necromortus Год назад +9

Very well put. I haven't for one moment really cared about what the secret actually is, just wanted a fu game with a sweet farewell for these characters. Instead, it feels like the creator actually cared more about the meta aspect of the story instead of the characters leading to a unsatisfying conclusion just because he wanted to make a point about expectations and storytelling.
Feels more like it's a game made to satisfy Ron and his love for meta naratives than the actual players.

    • @PopsieFunk
      @PopsieFunk Год назад +5

@@Necromortus right. Instead, e got an ending where Guybrush is pursuing his thoughtless obsession, and just a he reaches the climax of his adventure, he is confusingly and instantly smacked in the face and brought to another world that may or may not be reality.
No grand sacrifice was made. No lesson was seemingly learned. He just abruptly finds himself in shocking and unexpected situation which confuses him, almost like an elderly alzheimer's patient who wanders out of his room and regains his senses in the middle of town.
In the last sequence, Elaine basically serves as an orderly and Guybrush clings to her because she is the only thing that he recognizes from his adventures as being real.
Then as Guybrush finishes telling the story to his son, and as Elaine whispers of a new adventure, Guybrush sit on the bench for a few moments as the story fades to black... but he doesn't sit there with happy memories of great adventures of a long life. He sits there, almost depressed. Seemingly longing for the days of old, loving his family, but contemplating whether they were worth the end of his adventures. No lesson learned and selfishness still in his heart.
And again, I get it. It's very possible that is exactly the metaphor Gilbert was going for... but we didn't want it. What is also sad, is I praised Gilbert based on the first sequence of the game, seemingly retelling the MI2 ending and implying that it was all part of the story being played out by the kids.
I loved that reveal, as I hated the MI2 ending and the opening sequence seemingly abolished that ending. In that moment, I said: 'Holy shit! Gilbert is acknowledging the fans and his previous mistakes! He's not going to make the same mistake twice! He is acknowledging the other games as Canon and we are going to get a definitive conclusion!"
I have Gilbert my full respect for seemingly abandoning his own original direction and taking a new path... the path best for the fans and characters. It seemed like, in that moment, that Gilbert understood that Monkey Island was no longer his world... and hadn't been for a very long time.
Monkey Island had become a world for the fans and the characters themselves. A world that had been crafted by many creators and individuals, not just Gilbert. Frankly, a world that may have been Gilbert's idea, but had since been fleshed out without Gilbert... and for the better.
Monkey Island grew as a legend with more stories in Gilbert's absence, than with Gilbert at the helm... but in the end, he chose to selfishly take back "his" story and finish it for himself, not for the fans... not for the characters... and not for the other developers that ultimately kept Monkey Island relevant for the past 30 years.
The part that makes me truly sad, is in all likelihood... this is really the end. No matter how much I love it, we all know in our hearts that Monkey Island has been on life support for over 2 decades. This was a budget priced game on release and didn't have a mass market, multi console release.
This was clearly designed to wrap up the tale, finally bringing back Ron Gilbert to finish the story, once and for all. The odds of a sequel aren't good and if it does happen, it will probably be another decade... and hopefully it will be without Gilbert. He clearly can't separate himself from his metaphorical vision for the betterment of the story.
If the sales are high enough and the outrage is loud enough, the best we can hope for, is maybe a DLC episode where Guybrush finally tells the real ending after persistent nagging from his son.
I just keep thinking... why couldn't Tim Schaffer have finished the franchise? Look at Psychonauts 2. That's how you make a long anticipated sequel...

@@bluespaceman7937 you are correct... and that was 30 years ago, was one of the most divisive endings in video game history, and many argue that it was a mistake. I am in that camp.
He had the opportunity to correct his mistake, but he just couldn't resist and went back to what he likes. Whether MI2 was a mistake is open to opinion, but doing it again 30 years later, after other developers have fleshed out the story and provided more content than Gilbert ever did, it was absolutely a mistake this time.
A true disappointment after 30 years of anticipation. Gilbert was so worried about disappointing the fans, that he seemingly did it on purpose, rather than try and fail to provide a satisfying conclusion. And the truth is, most fans would have been happy as long as all the lose ends were tied up and he didn't go back to the damn theme park silliness.

Then after breaking the curse you are in the carnival of the damned and need to escape. Preferably on a bumper car being launched into the sea. Leading in The curse of Monkey Island.
What I got was a story with lack lustre puzzles. slim dialogue trees. No insult swordfighting, no sea combat, no monkey combat. I like endings that aren't there to cater to the audience or stick to conventions. This is a ending people talk about, it riles up people. The community thread over on Steam about the ending is 16 pages long. Most games' endings are easily forgotten the moment the credits are finished and you moved on to the next game. You won't see these threads and this here comment sections about 90% of games. Those 90% might be more satisfying in short term because you have definite closure (and oh boy do humans love closure!). From an artistic point of view and in terms of actually having something to discuss with your friends, peers, etc. this one ending is far better than most endings.
Also look at how many people come forth with their own endings! And how they'd written the ending if it was up to them. People are getting creative, imaginative. I'd recommend to write down what you think, write your own story by all means. It's fun and makes you grow personally. Just because of ending you personally didn't like. Not many games manage to do that.

  • @ParkournPrankster
    @ParkournPrankster Год назад +14

I'm about to say my thoughts regarding this game. I think I figured out what the ending and the secret to me is.
    The Secret.... is a curse.
Before I get into that let's go back to ALL of the Monkey Island games and I realized. Despite them all having Monkey Island in the title, Monkey Island was never the goal in each game
MI1: Focuses on Guybrush becoming a Pirate and saving the Governor
M2: Finding the Teasure Big Whoop to escape Lechuck
Mi3: Undo a curse on Elaine and Escape the Carnival of the Damned
MI4: Proving to Melee Island Lechuck is running for mayor while stopping Ozzie
MI5: Undo a pox created by himself when improvising a way to stop Lechuck
What do these all have in common? Monkey Island in each game is not the goal, rather a tool or location that just so happens to be involved in each respective story.
Now let's go back to the Secret and WHY I think it's a curse.
For one thing, throughout the series Guybrush had a threat he always had to deal with and while he would occasionally cause problems or mischief as a means of avoiding or stopping said danger, when he did wrong someone, he'd pay them back to show no hard feelings towards them. But in this game think back to all the bad things he did, destroy a natural habitat for the sake of getting on Lechucks ship, overthrow and destroy a government all to get a key and the most clear one of all them, risking his own life by essentially sneakily working for Lechuck. All for the sake of obtaining the Secret. And we'll come back to Lechuck, dw he too as well as the new pirate leaders are under the curses affect as well. Point being do these sound like things Guybrush would do on purpose for the greater good? No at least when trying to stop a threat. And in this game, there is no threat. In fact I think the Secret curses people who try to pursue it, to have a one track mind. This shows even with Lechuck as he seems careless about killing Guybrush and even his own crew show doubt towards him which is kinda new and somewhat surprising. Then the pirate leaders, who are a play on edgy new age rock bands, are also involved, but only when Guybrush tells them that he's hunting for the secret to them, they seem surprised and interested in what he's doing all of a sudden. And when each pirate group goes around searching for the Secret, many casualties are met with anyone involved. Iron Rose, presumably dies, Maddison is implied to have been killed, Wally is captured again.
Remember that old lady character Widey? I think she's there to show what happens if you pursue the Secret and I think Guybrush could've ended up like that. Which leads me to the ending. I don't think the theme park actually happened. In fact I think Guybrush told that to his son on purpose, to dissuade him from the Secret himself. That way he wouldn't sacrifice the bonds he had with his friends. Why else would they show his son and his friends getting along, when we see Guybrush break bonds and cause mayhem as a means of getting the Secret? In many ways I do think that had we gotten the answer, I think we would've been satisfied, but he's also telling the story to his son as well and could've inspired him to obtain the Secret himself at any cost.
And those are my thoughts. I theorize that the Secret is an intangible curse can never be obtained, and I think Guybrush figured it out. And he now knows the Secret, but it wasn't what he expected. Not riches, not fame, but a never ending curse to continue plague pirates. And if it's so much of a stretch that it's a curse, it was founded in the VooDoo Lady's shop. That's no accident. Again this is all a theory of mine after going through and analyzing the game as a whole and the theme that was spread around in the story. I understand that players may have found the game disappointing and it was a little for myself as well, but hey, I tried to make the ending a little less ambiguous and have a concrete answer that's possibly satisfactory to everyone here. An I hope you all enjoyed my little theory.

I guess I hoped Ron would’ve grown to the point where he realised your original vision isn’t necessarily the best one. I also don’t buy a lot of what he said regarding Guybrush and Elaine. If you played 1 and 2 it is obvious there is a love story + something happened and Guybrush fucked up. Same thing happened with How I met your mother, the creators were committed to a vision of the mother dying which made viewers feel robbed. Remember nobody wants to play a game and it feels hollow and meaningless. It’s not clever, it’s stupid. Ron creates a compelling world full of jokes and wonder then basically with that and Thimbleweed park says it doesn’t really exist

I really haven't cared about the SECRET of Monkey Island. Anyway, there were some secrets like the underground of Dinky Island was linked to the backstreet of Melee Island in Le Chuck's revenge, and it's related to everything happened in amusement park and Guybrush's imagination. Return to Monkey Island is nothing more than re-confirmation of it. So the stupid t-shirt symbolises not only the stupid t-shirt but also the whole story is Guybrush's imagination in the amusement park.
Well, OK. Every game player is playing in the amusement park created by game developers. It's true, but I think most players, because the game is entertainment in which the player directly participates, tend to believe or deceive themselves that everything that happens in the game is somewhat real in the hearts of players. Ron Gilbert doesn't like it. In Thimbleweed Park, there is a book "The true secret of Monkey Island" and it says "We both know, don't blind yourselves" kind of comment.
Anyway I didn't like these elements when I played Le Chuck's revenge, Thimbleweed park and I don't like even in Return to Monkey Island. These kind of all of thing was imagination (with some truth because he is married with Elaine) makes everything not real.
I would say that no Star War's fans like to hear the Star Wars happened in imagination of Luke Skywalker when he was playing in some amusement park called galaxy far far away.
The worst part is that at least in Le chucks's revenge they created a complete story, but in Return to Monkey Island, they just cut the story before final.

I love the amusement park ending. I love how the story emphasises that it is all about the fun you have during the journey and not what happens when it ends. It's hinted (and originally confirmed before retconned) in previous games too. But that's the beauty of it. It doesn't have to be discussed, it is what it is.

Not only was I disappointed about the lack of a final confrontation with LeChuck but it also annoys me that certain plot points from older games are totally ignored here.
For instance in Escape Herman was shown to actually be Grandpa Marley (even though many hated this revelation) yet he goes back to just being Herman here
Or the ending to Tales where the Voodoo Lady is shown to be the mastermind behind the events of the games and captures LeChuck's voodoo essence yet here she is just back to being a helpful side character again!
It's like Ron ignored major events of the MI games set after MI2 but keeps the actual games as cannon which is an odd choice... Kinda keeps in with it all being a story theme but still seems kinda sloppy.

If you read what people have to say to you and what Ron's letter says about waiting or wondering what the sercret was it makes more sense. At the end of the day MI is just a game, an amazing game. Return made me laugh, smile, and even shed a tear. Absolutely loved it.

A bit of mixed feelings towards the ending. I liked it and it's not that I'm against the meta message, heck I even cried reading Ron Gilbert's letter...
...but the game as a whole didn't fully deserve the ending YET.
It was too fast, too short, of an adventure. I needed a bit more of an in-world "finale" before they pulled the rug from under our feet.
The game felt very small to me. I took my time, enjoyed all the sights and went through all dialogue trees yet I still finished the game in a day on hard mode.
So when the meta ending played out, I was still hopeful for another less obvious twist so I could keep playing a bit more.

Honestly Ron's canon ending doesn't make coincide with LeChuck's Revenge considering Elaine is clearly still waiting for Guybrush on Dinky Island. Meaning both realities are either real or Ron just wanted to retcon it all to explain away a weak ending. I mean the ending where Guybrush faces off LeChuck. You have to give Pathos, if its in one narrative you can't just drop it and say, "well it ain't real anyway."

    • @IHaveBingChilling

I love this ending, I replayed episodes 1 and 2 before doing this one. The ending just makes sense with a lot of the elements we are shown in "Secret" and "LeChuck's Revenge".
The rewards for the pirate trials.
the grog machine at Stan's Shipyard
When you're imprisoned on Phatt Island, it's inspired by the pirate caraibbean ride.
The corridors you end up in at Dinky Island are actually part of the 'crew/staff/maintenance
    E-Ticket
Broken vending machine taken down to maintenance hall.
Similarities between Booty Island and Big Whoop Amusement Park
    .....
Many elements in MK 1&2 suggest that we are in a theme park.
The games are inspired by Disney Land: Pirate of the Caribbean.
I don't understand why many are disappointed with this ending.
Many would have hoped that "Guybrush" would actually be locked in a voodoo spell. This has already been done in "Curse". You will have cried that it is not original. No matter how it ends, you'll think it sucks.
Ron Gilbert wanted to make his ending, and he did, and it's great, especially since it takes into account the other episodes after MK2.
Would you have preferred the secret of Monkey Island to be a giant robot?

    • @LWT1331

No it's not great. Also this assumption is just ridicilous: "You will have cried that it is not original. No matter how it ends, you'll think it sucks." Don't presume to know what I and anybody else think. I've played many games with good, decent and bad endings. I've always tolerated even the bad endings because they at least tried to not take the lazy way out the way Gilbert does here. This ending is an abomination, plain and simple. And it does the rest of the game, which I actually enjoyed, a great disservice.

Im huge fan of the series (mostly MI games where Gilbert wasnt involved), and it pains me, because in Tales of Monkey Island, the chacrters growned up with player and this is classic Status Qo. The ending is just Gilbert trying to hide ending like from book for childrens, into some deeper meaning. It's really the only way to have an ending larger than the sum of its parts, and if you're into art like this, it's fantastic. Very Kaufman.
