I remember playing the original on the Amiga. It took what felt like years to complete the game, with no internet to help. The soundtrack has been forever burned into my brain. The little jingle between each chapter. I recently replayed it, now with an adult brain and a vague memory of the puzzles from 30 years ago, I think I was able to get through the game in a few hours over a couple of days. It still holds up as a fun game. The jokes are timeless. The atmosphere. The sights, the sounds. The characters. Of course there is the nostalgia that comes with the playthrough but its easy to see why this game stood the test of time and has the cult following it does. Totally agree with your comment about having the need to know the secret of Monkey Island. That was a question that never weighed me down. I always felt like the secret was the game itself and the name was decided because it sounds cool and intriguing. I find it difficult to believe the developers really put that much thought into it. None of them thought at the time this game would become a cult classic. Having now played through MI1 & 2 and regarding which is the best: Two is technologically superior. Its a bigger game, the originals were 11 vs 4 disks. The artwork/graphics, programming scripts, animations etc, all improved. As it should be, its the second game. But for me, 1 is the best. Probably because of nostalgia more than anything.
Absolutely fantastic video. Excellent nostalgia but they're far from perfect as you've shown. The Terry Pratchett example was spot on. Great content my friend.
Hey very cool talk. Actually I liked in MI2 the easy and hard modes. It was very cool to experience the hard puzzles after playing easy. Only thing I really had appreciated, if the end had been better. I was never happy with the end. It was like, tearing apart the best dream of my life and waking up in a cruel reality.
Really great video, thorough and a lot of interesting point of views. 👍I LOVE the franchise, and the last game, but I too generally think the whole "it was a dream" or story take is dull, and usually a cop out. It's an approach that could be applied to any fictional work, and makes me care less for the characters. Imagine if Harry Potter was imagening everything while in an Asylum, or Luke Skywalker dreamt the whole saga after being hit in the head by a Jawa. However, it subverts expextations and the Meta layers are interesting. I just don't get why Return doubles Down on the same ending as Monkey 2, it's repetitive and this time around there aren't anything that breaks the illusion and pulls Guybrush out of the fantasy, like the maintanence guy in Monkey 2. Of course, now our protagonist is older, and we also get a layer on top of it, with the story telling frame around it. To me, the secret of monkey 1 was simply, that Hell was beneath the Island and could be accessed from the monkey head. I'm not sure why it needed to be eloborated further. For Monkey 2, you nailed the ambigious ending, where it could both be a fantasy or a real curse, since Elaine is still part of the pirate world, that Guybrush left behind. For return of monkey Island, it's unclear how much of the first two games have really played out, since the theme is All about stories and how stories can change over time with each retelling. However, remember that Elaine and Guybrush were not together in monkey 2 and didn't patch things up. But anyway did end up together in Return, Even in the real world. So there Are some missing links, which could be explained by the whole story telling approach. Also a bit Odd how she encourages his behaviour in the real world, but more so in the fantasy where she's really understanding. 😂 Og course this would be within the story tellers control, but a bit Odd that he feels the need to include this as an integral part of the story.
I can’t listen to someone who so easily accepts the erasure of curse of monkey island. Maybe the best adventure game of all time. Others can’t take its place by the sheer quality of it
What you are talking about at 11:40 is totally false. You do NOT have to talk to the voodoo lady to progress the plot. For the simple reason, you NEVER have to talk to the voodoo lady in the entire game. You can go in the shop, get the chicken with a pulley in the middle without talking to her and never ever come back.
I respect your opinion, but I found Return To Monkey island awful....The puzzles were brain dead. I felt like they should Have kept the original difficulty and just added a hint book for the more casual players. The art was terrible as well. O well.... 1-3 were the best IMO.
The bar tender in scab island says that Kate has all the near grog. But yes, I completely forget how I decided to frame her.

Would love to see a return to finalizer or swgemu in general for another character adventure. Been binging your videos lately :)

That was awesome - although I could have done without being reminded of that goat... 😫
It was a lot different in my memory - the solution was more hidden in the landscape. Funny the tricks memory can play!
what happened to MI3? it is vastly superior in my opinion to Return...
I loved Monkey Island 2 and 1. didnt care for Return to Monkey Island. the art style, characters and comedy just want as good.
I watched MI1 and MI2 on RUclips before playing Return. I regret that, but because I should have PLAYED them and not WATCHED them.
The first two were good.. but Curse was the peak of the series.
1 & 2 were classics. Didnt care for the third one.😊
The Return diminishes the previous games' legacy. It's an okay game but a disappointing conclusion to a great saga.
