- Dave Edmunds - Queen Of Hearts (Top Of The Pops 1979)
"Midnight, I'm a-waiting on the 1205
Hoping it'll take me just a little farther down the line
Moonlight, you're just a heartache in disguise
Won't you keep my heart from breaking
If it's only for a very short time
Playing with the Queen of Hearts knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool who'll do anything for you
Laying out another lie, thinking about a life of crime
That's what I'll have to do to keep me away from you
Baby, it makes me feel so bad
Why is everybody telling everybody what you have done
And baby, I know it makes you sad
But when they're handing out the heartaches
You know you got to have you some
Playing with the Queen of Hearts knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool who'll do anything for you
Laying out another lie, thinking about a life of crime
That's what I'll have to do to keep me away from you
Lovers, I know you've had a few
You hide your heart beneath the covers
And you tell 'em they're the only one
And others know what I'm going through
It's so hard to be a lover
When you say you only do it for fun
Playing with the Queen of Hearts knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool who'll do anything for you
Laying out another lie, thinking about a life of crime
That's what I'll have to do to keep me away from you
To keep me away from you
To keep me away from you
(Repeat)"
Billy Bremner, Nick Lowe, Terry Williams and Dave. What a great band.
I love Dave Edmunds !!! I wish he would come to St Louis
Pop perfection!
His backing supergroup rockplile and
Yeah it's odd. Yet when I think of Dave Edmunds I always think of Nick Lowe, and them together.
Yup. I have a playlist here on YT called “Nick and Dave.” 😁
Nick Lowe on bass
Besides being his Rockpile band-mate, Nick also was Dave's producer in the late 70s/ early 80s.
Billy Bremner on Guitar, Terry Williams on drums. It's Rockpile.
Duh.
such a huge Buddy Holly influence
Juice,Juice,Juice always!
BAHAHAHHA GTA. :D
Not enough people know this man's work.
This album is one of my all time favorites.
Juice is better
It's a matter of taste but listening to Dave's version and then listening to juices is like going on to John Smith's straight after a Newcastle Brown 🤢
Yes indeed. I grew up without being aware of him. He does not feature in a list of "100 best British rock singers" - dunno why.
@@gregoryjones5890 OJ SAMSON?
Dave's record company, Led Zep's Swan Song, refused to release this in the USA which made Dave a bit angry, especially when an unknown singer Juice Newton had a massive hit wiht the same arrangement as on Dave's record.
dave edmonds is a legend.
Love Dave Edmunds.....always have since 'I hear you knockin'
Since he was crawling from the wreckage.

sue, your not wrong.
Number one when I was born!
i am almost 80 and still love this kind of music.
Excellent taste sweetie 😘
Im 75 and remember this stuff so well. Fabulous. If your feet don't move to this, you're dead. Lond Live R&R. Thanks Dave.
Wow! I remember my mum trying to dance to this in 70s he is absolute brilliant key changer!
Was a 11 year old back then,! Dam where has the years gone,! I was born 23rd May 1968, from northern Ireland UK 🤝🇬🇧
March 14th 1968. So thankful for RUclips. Cheers from Toronto, Canada!🍺
1968...good year....I was born lol
Jigging along to this in bed trying very hard not to wake my hubby! 😬
Dave Edmunds, you rock! ❤
The sound of my teenage years. Wonderfull
Rockpile.... The talent in that Band... Awesome
Am I the only one to prepare this over the female version?
I remember this hitting the charts I liked then and still do
Wonderful. Came to it later, but love the joyous pure sound of it
Hello Amanda...
one of the best records of the 70's
I love his musiik
Good singerx
Good, but nowhere near as good as Girls talk.
t@@johngogarty945
It's officially a shower. Bath . Car and kitchen song.
This is the Rockpile lineup. Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Terry Williams, and Billy Bremner
Also the first recorded version of the song, even though it was written for Juice Newton.
@@scotscotland3020 It was not written for Newton.
You're right. This song was written for themselves. Juice just covered it. I love both version.
Talk about a supergroup..
Where's Elvis ?
@@hogfarmersforjustice4804 Written by Hank Devito (see above credits) long time Hot Band sideman; Emmy Lou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Albert Lee. Check out Emmy Lou’s Luxury Liner album (Title song written by Graham Parsons; Albert’s Hidin’ album and Rodney Crowell’ first, Ain’t Livin’ Long Like This.
Happy 80th Birthday Dave. Seen here with the Rockpile lineup.
Wow that chorus with the guitar strums definitely shows where Tom Petty got the idea for Runnin’ Down a Dream!
Love Dave Edmund's and really love this song
I love Juice Newton's version better
wow, what a blast from the past. great tune..Thanks for posting
This predates Juice Newton's version.
Never tire of this.
Sounds like it could be more 1959 than '79. Cool song, nice lyrics.
Its cuz daves music is timeless man real rock and roll is
One of the true greats of rock...
@poderosoleon69 Well you've got no taste then ; -) Dave's was the original and best performance of the song. Better arrangement and better attitude. Way more cool
What a great song. Dave Edmunds is awesome :)
it is great if also like cruel to be kind and half a boy and half a man
I loved this version from the first time I heard it, but it didn't get a lot of airplay on this side of the pond. Then Juice Newton's version became a much bigger hit and I felt sorely cheated. Her version wouldn't have been THAT bad if I had never heard this one, but when you're used to leather, plastic won't do.
Well l remember the both of them and they are both good .
Its great
Both are good but Juice's version had some indescribable quality that made it better.
@@eduardo_corrochio she had tits. come on, man
@@mbogucci1 So you're, what, twelve years old? 😄
OMG. Is Dave a fucking gifted genius guitarist or what??? Oh my fucking yes. Thank you for posting.
Hello Marti...
Love this music love it
Never heard this version before. Less jumpy than juice newtan, though I like hers because I was young when I heard it
Most underated singer of all time.
I agree.
Been a fan since the 70's.....remember "I hear you knockin"?......
It would be great if he AND Juice Newton sang it together. I'd pay to see that!
Ahh reminds me of when I was a kid and used to listen to my old man's massive LP collection through his mega expensive hi-fi.
I can remember clearly listening to the Dave Edmunds LP with this song & Girls Talk......If I remember rightly it was called Repeat When Necessary, or something like that 👍
Great album, also his album, "Information," produced by Jeff Lynne
Thank you for putting this up. Love this guy and nick Lowe. What a treat! Joyful!
Hello Ann...
Cruel to be kind. Oh yeah.
Great tunes get covered…. It’s a fact. Love you Dave. And I’ll bet Dave loved Juice’s version. And the royalties probably paid for some snazzy new guitars.
What à genius everyones forgotten him now him and Nick Lowe
No no no not true! Seeing Nick at the end of this month.❤
@@jacquismith3277 thanks lovely girl
@@DanielJones-z8m 👍Looking forward to it!
This is far superior to the Juice Newton cover. A shame that Americans in general are so unaware of this original, as it was never a hit there (and in turn, Newton's version was never a hit here in the UK).
Dave's version got a fair amount of air play.
I enjoy both. I like the jJuice Newton best probably because I heard it first but I also like the instrumentals on her and her video
Nick Lowe with his Bass helping fill the stage...
Rockpile in all their glory.
They were magnificent.
Look up the DVD (and album) called, "Carl Perkins and Friends - Blue Suede Shoes - A Rockabilly Session." The band for the gig consists of Carl Perkins, Dave Edmunds, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Rosanne Cash, Earl Slick, etc. It's well worth a look. It's from 1985 and you can find a lot of it on youtube. If you search 'Carl Perkins' a whole list of songs from this session will come up.
Repeat when necessary? Right about now I'd say. And while we're at it I'd like to increase my dosage, please. Thanks for posting!
Definitely the best. Nothing compares.
Incredible talent.
Love guitar based music,.
I remember dialling 16 on the telephone (Dial-a-Disc?)and buying it for my first girl friend, whom I went on to marry.Sure i still got it somewhere.
Never really got the recognition he deserved. When crap like the Bay City Rollers makes millions and DH scrapes by there's no justice.
DH?

ROCK ON DAVE LOVE IT
Freaking love this song ❤
Guess rockstar couldn't afford this version lol
I swear, the first time I heard this on my car's AM radio, I thought they'd discovered a lost Buddy Holly recording. Was I disappointed that it was Dave Edmunds? Well, I WAS a little sad that it wasn't Buddy (I was his biggest 10 y/o fan when he died), but... not that it was Dave Edmunds. 'Cause, after all - he IS Da Bomb...👍👍
What a great singer.
Love Dave Edmonds girl talk love that sound fabulous
A good Cardiff boy
@johnny cash Cal ord that's a name I've seen on Facebook before..a Splott boy ?
@johnny cash Same as me Splott boy born 49.

Welsh Rock at its finest.
Nick Lowe is awesome ll His song's with Elvis C. and Dave E. are classics !!!
Juice Newton’s one was a cover ? I found out today ..
What a learning experience!,I always thought this was Juice Newton's original recording.
His record company refused to release it in America, years before Juice Newton's version. The rest is history.

and Nick.
OMG!! TOTALLY agree! Can't believe anyone could even say that!! When I came here looking, I found that one first and was like...no way! Didn't know who the original was by but as soon as I heard this I knew it. This is MILES better than that one, I don't think it's a "woman's" song. xx
Eye hear the guitar is talking about 87 end the crime of the century in 97 down Paris! Maybe it's only been with November rain or is it? Eye did not 4get 2 rimember those days in September, men eye think eye lost my mind, and who did der 2 say it woz no sacrifice? 😢
Nick Lowe on bass??

Hello Karen...
WOW!! Is this the original version of this song?? Excellent!
Yes and there is nothing changed at the Juice Newton version I think

Hello Teresa..
I agree. One could be fooled into thinking it was a Buddy Holly cover.
They cut the outro short...sacrilege!
I am today days old when I found out Dave Edmonds recorded this song first.
Love Dave, heard the lp Twangin
