Dave Edmunds, a very accomplished vocalist and guitarist. anything with him and Nick Lowe in it is an instant classic. they were just so cool in the late 70s.
Hey Americansquirm, The video was shot on top of the Warner Bros. off building overlooking Rockefeller Center Mid-town Manhattan. It was shot and directed by Martin Pitts and Produced by Derek Burbidge.
First of all the song by Elvis Costello is Revolver-era Beatles brilliant. But this is the arrangement that put it over the top. After all these years I'm honestly still in awe of it.
I grew up as a kid in the late 70s and 80s listening to this on the radio, used to be a favorite song of mine and it still sounds great all these years later.
+jasonwheel As well as Rockpile's Seconds of Pleasure album, check out Dave Edmunds' Repeat When Necessary album - it's the same Rockpile group, just under his name. Came out a little before the Rockpile album, IIRC Likewise with Nick Lowe's Labour of Lust album. So really, there are three damned good albums that Rockpile gave us....
Agreed...it seems a bit odd that the members of the band achieved more solo success than as members of the band itself. Great musicians, nonetheless. Cheers.
The vocalist had a mature voice back then. Today, he maintains a crisp, clear diction, better than most of the golden oldies for his age. Under rated and underutilised. Raw sound would have been accepted among the classics of 1950's. 1979 was a remarkable year full of many one hit wonders. Timing!
Man, this song reminds me of my teens, pimples, bad hair, and trying to pick up at the local roller skating rink. Thankyou Dave,Nick,Billy and Terry. Fond innocent times.
I had tickets for Rockpile - my greatest heroes back then - in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1981. I can still remember that horrible feeling when reading about the group splitting up and that the whole tour was cancelled... A major trauma.
The bassplayer said ones: "it doesn 't mather what the words are, as long as it sounds good". I can not disagree more with the producer of 3 albums of the song smith of this pearl.
Rockpile ( the 1980's decade's line --- up or band mates or band members ) is/are : the legendary Dave Edmunds --- lead vocals, background vocals and rhythm guitar as well as he is the one singing lead vocals located in this vintage, old and classic Rockpile hit song called Girls Talk film footage or music video the amazing Billy Bremmer --- lead guitar, background vocals and also rhythm guitar the gifted Nick Lowe --- possibly lead vocals, background vocals and bass guitar the incredible Terry Williams --- drums and percussion
Amazing Tune ! Written by 'Elvis Costello' , the Bass player is 'Nick Lowe, who had an amazing solo career as well as producing the first LP by 'The Damned' ! Loads going on here! dx
Also the great Terry Williams on drums. . . played with Dire Straits for some years. Worth seeing him on the 'Alchemy Live' album. . . .great drumming.
Fantastic - thanks so much for posting this video - it takes me right back. I love the one where he's struttin round in his tight jeans to this too - ooooerrr! Cheers
This is one of my favourite pop songs of all time. I just bought this album about 2 years ago cuz I heard this track in a wine bar somewhere in London and thought, what a perfect song.
This looks like the original promo clip...I've never to the best of my knowledge seen it before...this isn't just the best version of the song, but one of Dave/Nick/Rockpile's best ever...awesome post...thank you
Great song and done well by Dave Edmunds. I particularly like the tribute to the Everly Brothers by using chords used by the Evs in their song 'Problems'.
..Exactly!! A great pick-off, observation..and also Bird Dog!! Saw Edmunds on Letterman one night, he pulled this avant-guarde chord change out of no where!! Recognized it..Thnx!
Just love it All their songs Even the one they had a wedding.nicks wedding brillant. So funny and cute girl a knock out in that dress Boy he had fun on his wedding night.
This was on Dave Edmunds awesome solo record "Repeat When Necessary". The "Queen of Hearts" cover is on that album too. I wore that record out. As well as Rockpile's "Seconds of Pleasure" album. Both albums were released during the 1980's. But Dave, he was around since I was a kid in the 1970's. Damn good songs all those musicans played and sang and wrote (I'm also a big Elvis Costello fan too).
Seem to remember watching this on Multi-Coloured Swap Shop (?) with Noel Edmonds presenting on a Saturday morning and then going around to a friend's house and talking about what a great song this was. Surprised they didn't go bigger
They actually had recording contract conflicts and so they weren't allowed to really tour as Rockpile much. If they'd been given free range and full support? Indeed, they would have been huge, and they do still have a strong cult following.
Saw them as a. Warm up act to Blondie they absolutely blew them away! Oh what could have been Rockpile may be the greatest group that few ever heard of!!
I was late to work today and forgot the lipstick and powder. This song popped right in my brain and I HAD to hear it. Loved this song for a million years.
Filmed on top of the Warner Brothers Records Building in Manhattan and shown on TOTP. If you listen closely at the beginning you can hear a bit of Jimmy Savile introducing it.
Rock on drummer! ....Ah the Agora - East18th - Coffee Break Concerts - saw Joe Perry Project - saw Ramones one night - now a sad parking lot - drink beer and the hi-way entrance was 25 feet away. Perfect.
I saw Dave Edmunds perform live earlier this year . In the audience was Terry Williams although he didnt perform. . I met them both separately in the theatre bar afterwards .I had taken along 3 albums for signing by Dave so having Terry there was a bonus. Dave refused to sign the Rockpile group LP although he did sign his own. ( Also there was Andy Fairweather-Low ). Terry told me there were `too many issues` for the original Rockpile ever to reform.
This has always been my fav' by Dave Edmunds. I find it hard to keep still to this & I felt the same in 1979 when I was 11. His 1st hit was a remake of Smiley Lewis's 1955 song I Hear You Knocking which was his biggest of 12 hits & 1 of 4 top 10s. This Dave's 5 & 2nd biggest reaching number 4 on 30th-June-79. He & Elvis Costello were right, boy can they talk & talk & talk & talk.......... & at the end of it all they have said nothing!!!
@Dave Edmunds though it's an Elvis Costello composition, YOU rock and rule this song. Always did throughout the years! I used to sing this with my own band in the mid 80's..and the people loved it.👌
Dave Edmunds, a very accomplished vocalist and guitarist. anything with him and Nick Lowe in it is an instant classic. they were just so cool in the late 70s.
Without the drummer who is a wizard he keepsake the player s in beat .
Dave Edmund wa's one of Lemmy's heros. Thumbs up!
Hey Americansquirm,

30 years ago I was in college and this was killer. i'm 57 an it still kills
All these years later this is still utterly gobsmacking.
+Ystadcop His voice is amazing, and they can PLAY
Very true love Rock Pile
This song remembers me when I met my wife off 42 years now that was a tune indeed 👌 🏴
Such a perfect little pop song, effortlessly and joyously played.
Yes. Didn't EC write this after overhearing some women gossiping about his anatomy?
It’s a hard song to play. Sneaky
I grew up as a kid in the late 70s and 80s listening to this on the radio, used to be a favorite song of mine and it still sounds great all these years later.
Honestly Rockpile made some of the most memorable pop records of that or any other era. Genius.
Boy now I'm starting to have flashbacks to a great time of my youth.
So Many Memories Thank s Dave and Nick lowe 😊
Rockpile could have been so much more than it was. You got an awful lot of talent standing on that stage.
+jasonwheel As well as Rockpile's Seconds of Pleasure album, check out Dave Edmunds' Repeat When Necessary album - it's the same Rockpile group, just under his name. FOUR albums ! don't forget about Dave's 'Tracks on Wax'. It was also the same Rockpile lineup.
GREAT TALENT AND BAND ....REAL MUSIC....
right there Jason.jpj
The vocalist had a mature voice back then. Today, he maintains a crisp, clear diction, better than most of the golden oldies for his age. Under rated and underutilised. Raw sound would have been accepted among the classics of 1950's. 1979 was a remarkable year full of many one hit wonders. Timing!
Are you calling Rockpile a one hit wonder?
Man, this song reminds me of my teens,
pimples, bad hair, and trying to pick up at the local roller skating rink.
Thankyou Dave,Nick,Billy and Terry.
Fond innocent times.
Great song.
It was in the charts in 1979.
It got to No. 4 in the UK and to no.65 on the US Billboard chart.
Dave's voice is brillllllllllllllliant! Great music!
I cant agree more..im 46 and love Heavy Metal and Punk, but nothing compares to great music like this. BRING THEM BACK!!!
All due respect to Costello -- this is the definitive version. A masterpiece. This video doesn't do it justice -- but stil. Thanks.
One of the greatest pop songs. Love it.
Remember it well -brilliant. Edmunds did it like Costello should have done it - he misread his own song!
Great version of a great song. Thank you so much for posting this.
Costello's genius is timeless.
I had tickets for Rockpile - my greatest heroes back then - in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1981.
I can still remember that horrible feeling when reading about the group splitting up and that the whole tour was cancelled... A major trauma.
Same here! Never got to see them play as a group, just saw them as solo artists.
"She may not be an old-fashioned girl but she's gonna get dated."
CLASSIC line!
The bassplayer said ones: "it doesn 't mather what the words are, as long as it sounds good". I can not disagree more with the producer of 3 albums of the song smith of this pearl.
They were easily the best band in the world, by a wide margin.
Lowe rockin' the 8 string bass- killer!
Just magic ,real music from a great musician. How lucky i have been to live through these times. Many thanks for posting.
Dave Edmunds (vocals, guitar), Nick Lowe (vocals, bass guitar), Billy Bremner (vocals, guitar) and Terry Williams (drums).
Billy Bremner not the footballer is it
The Best.
This was filmed on top of the Warner Brothers Records Building in Manhattan, near the Rockefeller Centre.
Yes, when they cut to Nick, behind him I recognize one of the Rockefeller Center buildings.
Great tune....saw them at the HOllywood Paladium in 1979, very loud, very cool.
Kick ass job on the bass by Nick

Terry Williams legend!
A legendary pub rock drummer.....love ya dude!
Nov. 1980, The Agora in Cleveland. Thank You. First time in a bar as an 18 yr old, and it changed my life.To prove it, Moon Martin opened.
He also was drummer for Dire Straits after Pick Withers.
Ha Ha!! Caught a good chunk of Alchemy on TV some weeks ago. Brings back great memories!!

I say Dave Edmonds opened for Santana in Tucson back in the day
I was late to work today and forgot the lipstick and powder. This song popped right in my brain and I HAD to hear it. Loved this song for a million years.

@Dave Edmunds well I dont! Just liked your music back then
As an earlier poster said, this is from an episode of "Cheggers Plays Pop", a BBC kids programme with Keith Chegwin that ran from 1978-1986.
