- "Come Dancing" is a tribute to the Davies' older sister Rene. Living in Canada with her reportedly abusive husband, the 31-year-old Rene was visiting her childhood home in Fortis Green in London at the time of Ray Davies' 13th birthday on which she surprised him with a gift of the Spanish guitar he had tried to persuade his parents to buy him. That evening, Rene, who had a weak heart as a result of a childhood bout of rheumatic fever, suffered a fatal heart attack while dancing at the Lyceum ballroom.
The music video for "Come Dancing" was shot in November 1982 at Ilford Palais in Essex. Ilford Palais was demolished in 2007 to make room for luxury flats, meeting a similar fate to that of the palais described in the lyrics of "Come Dancing."
When first released as a single in United Kingdom in November 1982, "Come Dancing" failed to chart. Although Arista Records founder Clive Davis had reservations about releasing the single in the United States due to the English subject matter of dance halls, the track saw an American single release in April 1983. "Come Dancing" reached number six on the Hot 100, becoming the band's highest US charting single in over a decade and tying with "Tired of Waiting for You" as the band's highest-charting single ever. This success was achieved largely with the help of a promotional music video directed by Julien Temple that saw frequent airing on MTV. As a result of its American success, the single was re-released in Britain. Unlike its first release, the single became a top 20 British hit, reaching number 12.
A video. A story. A song. A dance. A life in the 80s😊
The happiest sad song the world has ever known...
The world would be a much different place if the Kinks had never existed, think how much she changed things on a huge scale by giving him that guitar.
I am also an old guy who enjoys the kinks...67 years old & going strong😊🎉
There can only ever be one Ray Davies.
one of the best songs of the 1980's. ❤
Memories of the big UK dance halls which seemed to die out in the 1960s...wonderful times
Cultures in the US ruined dance clubs.
I always get chills when the modern Kinks make their appearance.
Love this video! I've seen some copies with missing audio horn parts. Just sounds weird to me. But I do remember watching this video when I was a teenager and hearing the poster being ripped off of the wall. I haven't seen that copy since 😢😢😢..update!!! It's a VH1 classic copy with the video somewhat tilted 😮 it's the 4:05 time length 😊
My grandma ... Say this in the 80s.
It basically was the story of her young life
I think this song means . A parking lot was constructed on a plot of land where the supermarket once stood . Before that , a bowlin alley on the same site which used to be the local Palais frequented by the big bands . My sister used to go there on Saturdays for dances where all her boyfriends would come to call . It was natural thing to do , just a another Saturday date . She would always be ready , but deliberately made them wait in anticipation , unbeknownst to them that the night would end up in frustration . Spending all his weeks wages just for a hug and a kiss on the cheek . That's how things were when I was a kid and they would say " come dancing " my sister always obliged . She returned home late and my mom wait leading to arguments . When they finally tore down the Palais , my sister wept as a part of her childhood was lost . Now , as an adult playing in a band , I see a car park where Palais once stood . My sister is married , living in an estate , waiting for her daughters to return home . Knowing they do somethings she would never be able to do . I often wonder if she would still be up for dancing like we used to , if I asked her . Times have changed , but the memories of our youth remain dear to us . Everything changes , nothing stays the same . Every now and then ,we wish things could go back to those simpler times when life wasn't so complicated . But life goes on , and we can only dream . Come Dancing
Old guy who loves the Kinks

One of the best bands ever
And songwriters
And they are british
Thank you the kinks
So grand that this is being rediscovered! I've loved this tune for eons!
the backstory of this song is so sad
Why?
@stevenweint7893 when ray was a lad, his sister bought him a guitar for his birthday. Later that night she went out dancing and died of a heart attack on the dance floor. This song is an homage to her.
@@LSBBD Oh, that is sad. Thank you.
Great video, great song, great band
One of the all time greatest groups ever and best bands of the 60’s and 70’s havjng their biggest hit of the 80’s …should have been a number 1
Yeah, think about it they're probably the fourth most important band of the British invasion, and that's because the Beatles, the stones, and the who existed. So also probably one of the most underrated bands because of that
this song makes me feel good
Me too.
playing this song in honor of the theaters in Westwood (UCLA) that are closing after being there for 100 years :(
Great job upscaling Great Sound
Thanks for the restoration, Crosscut. I often used to use this song, with the fuzzy youtube video copy, in English lessons (EFL), devising language learning games with the wonderful narrative lyric of this song. I'm not big on nostalgia through music, but this song (which is actually about nostalgia) does give me lovely chills.
Incredible ❤
Friday Night Videos
This print seems dark, there was a much better one formerly on RUclips.
I try not to make any adjustments in exposure in videos. Usually, the director has done something like that for artistic reasons.
@@CrosscutFilmsSask Sorry, could just be my eyes getting older. Still my favorite Kinks song and that's a high bar.
