Okay. In case RC4WD is reading the comments, here is some (hopefully) constructive criticism. I like the idea of a true-to-scale 1/24th scale crawler. However, the sacrifices required to get there do not result in a good user experience for most people. The Axial SCX24 is undoubtedly the market leader and it's one of the least scale-accurate micro crawlers. The inaccuracies (wheel and tire size, worm gears, wheelbase, track width, etc.) all add up to offer improved performance while still capturing the idea/image of the full-size trucks they're based upon. The micro crawler community has taken notice. Being 100% scale is its own kind of fun, but at some point it becomes less of a "driver" and more of a static model that can also be driven. The Kyosho Mini-Z 4x4 is much more scale accurate than the SCX24. It walks right up to that line without stepping over it. Sure, it doesn't have an interior and it doesn't perform like a SCX24, but all of the details it does have are incredibly well done and the people who buy them may even appreciate the additional challenge the performance offers. Sadly, the 1/24 Trailfinder 2 lacks the quality, scale details of a Mini-Z 4x4 and the performance of a SCX24. Additionally, it is priced right in the middle of them. What would I do differently? For starters, it needs respectable electronics. The motor should be a 030, 050, or 130 size with an actual transmission. The servo could use more power, probably a 9g or 12g unit. Plastic gears are fine. We understand. It's a RTR. The TX is important. It's easier to ignore cheap parts in the truck than it is a cheap TX. It's the only contact point a user has. Make that a decent experience and give them something that fits the hand and at least doesn't feel cheap. The Turbo Racing 3-channel TX's are a good example of this and are bundled with RTR's under $100. It's great to have a hardbody, but put some paint on it! The TF2 looks like it's straight out of the mold. If you're going to make a scale truck, time to fully commit. Some of us saw this coming a few days ago and I think we were all hoping for a leaf-sprung rear suspension. It can be done! Look at the Proline Ambush. I think there is a group of people who would buy it for that detail alone. Lastly, I recommend reconsidering the 0.7" wheels and tires. This seems to be an entirely new ecosystem and one I've never seen anyone ask for. The 1.0" wheels and tires may not be scale, but there are a ton of options. If that isn't acceptable, maybe build upon the existing 0.9" ecosystem used by RGT/FTX, HobbyPlus, and supported by BoomRacing.
Absolutely couldn't agree more. They had the opportunity to nail a homerun. It's like a bunt, just enough to get on base, and in the game. The hard body is nice, but... this is rc4wd! They ARE scale rc, and came away with a mediocre effort. The fact that the "more powerful" motor comes with it, and they ruled a tutorial on replacing it, just shows they rushed to get it out. Element offers a divorced transfer case, I'm blown away rc4wd didn't follow suit there, and improve. The axles are nice. The body needed more detail, and the motor is just..... why? Add $100 to it, make it a leaf truck, or just better components, (metal links, better motor, etc) put a transmitter with it that isn't from 1992, real beadlocks, (I do believe they make a few! ) and detail the body properly. I would easily pay for the better truck then.
100% agree with you on the above. Not sure if the body even looks as good as a WPL C series? --The fact that they just absolutely nailed the 4Runner & 1987 Extra Cab RTR TF2s, makes this seem entirely phoned in for RC4WD.
You are right, that price is crazy as well. Mini-Z would be the way to go. Did he say friction shocks? Seriously! That’s the worst part of these trucks.
Definitely think rc4wd dropped the ball on this. There's tons of 1/24 scale rigs good and bad that they could of took notes and made an absolute monster. But nope.
@@tgh117 you are correct. But neither are our 1/10 scale rigs. There will always be a size difference. But I was referring to functionality. This seems pretty useless compared to the scx24 which are excellent machines right out of the box.
@@Ryanlk69 It does not even belong remotely compared to scx24. It is way smaller, and much more in line with the 1/32 orlandoo type trucks, or the true scale 1/24 Geko. For its size and the upgraded N30 motor its actually pretty good out of the box. The scx24 is only the best at the moment because they took all the good stuff from teh losi trekker and incorporated it into a nice clean package. i agree its the probably the most capable out of the box in the current micro market, but it too could be better.
I like how you can point out the faults and still find the positives in them as well. I think this was a pretty honest and solid review. It does seem like they fell a bit short in the small scale as they do in the larger scale.
Considering price performance and detail....I not very impressed but hope RC4WD steps up with more and better 1/24 offerings. Until then I'll keep buying their wheels and tires.
I give them credit for joining the micro scene, but they had enough time to watch the others mistakes to learn from them. I haven't seen price yet, but they missed the mark I think. Huge props on a proper body tho
@@robbinthehood94. I read your comment as well, as it's "great!", but really, it's not. It has short comings, just like all the others, but some could have been avoided. Especially from rc4wd. I've been in this hobby 34 years, I've seen a lot of wins, and a lot of fails. This sits dead in the middle. Just my opinion, of course. I think it's a cool little truck, but would have certainly been willing to pay more for the free things it's lacking. You kind of "expect" rc4wd to be at a level a bit above the rest, I'm just disappointed they didn't deliver what they had the potential of.
@@twisterzman I don't expect Axial quality from RC4WD, but I do expect them to be better than someone like RGT. I think that is true for their larger trucks, but not for the 1/24 TF2. The price adds insult to injury.
The ambush 1/24 from proline I think was the only one that did a leaf spring setup. But at this scale, they did right with coils. Was looking forward to this awesome review 👍
I would love to see more videos on this particular truck! I just ordered one and the only reason was because of the body. I do not own a bunch of crawlers like a lot of you people. I have always wanted a TF2. The past few days I dove pretty deep in the 1/24 mini crawler world. The night before kind of decided on a SCX24. Like all the options of upgrades, but just didn’t want any of the bodies. So this morning I decided on the rc4wd 1/24. Started to look around for better components and a giant hole of nothing. Found FURITEK makes a motor but really do not find any first hand experience on a 1/24 tf2. So I dig the more scale end of things but would love to see more videos on this truck, please!
RC4WD has a great offering in their 1/18 scale line-up. Leaf sprung, C-Chanel, good electronics and very scale details with lights included..I dig my 1/18 defender. Ty, review delivered with great humor per usual, peace out..:)
I just hope the body will be available separately! I was really hoping for leaf springs, so Pro-Line would realize that the Ambush was ahead of it’s time, and that it needs to come back!
Yup, I want one. I already have a couple pair of those stamped steel beadlocks. Hoping they'll do a leaf spring kit as an add on. I've got a hardbody scx24 I did with a jeep Honcho puckup model kit. I love doing a full interior with full bed and asking the 10 scalers why it's so tough. Lol. (I know why, I have a bunch) Love your work, hope you do a short detail demo or something with this. It would be cool to show off all the 24 and 25 scale parts at the hobby shop in the plastic model area. As always, man. Have fun!
The fact there’s a guy that makes 1/25 rc cars with full interiors and engine bays that would lay the smackdown on this Mainstream RC4WD offering is hilarious
I was really hoping this one would’ve been a hit. I guess I’m gonna have to pull out that revell Toyota model kit and get it onto my SCX 24 now because I do like the old Toyota bodies.
Think it has potential.Maybe with the right esc and some imagination.Maybe there a way to make some soft leaf leaf springs and some fine weathering to make it a much better trail truck for its size. But that's just a thought.
Hey Matt, they had to give these away with a drastically discounted purchase of the "Iron Pig" tf2. I now have this exact, yellow, lil pos. LOL, thanks for the vid. I will use this hard body to practice my weathering skills. Keep up the great content.
I've been trying to wait patiently but then I saw the finished gmade Buffalo pickup behind you. Plus I'm curious how the trx4 mud truck is coming along. Sorry, couldn't help myself to bringing it up
Whoa that radio is a real piece of work. I like my tires? I guess like you said, it's a timing thing to compete at that scale and price point. I'm over $200 in upgrades on my deadbolt so far and haven't got the furitek, Yet.
I hope they stand behind these better than they did the new Gelande II D90 I purchased a few weeks ago. Came to me with stripped screws and motor quit working after 5 minutes.
The real news for me is the availability of scale 0.7" wheels and tires from RC4WD. I understand what they are initiating and I am all in. Is there going to be an aftermarket that supports this in terms of running gear? I hope so. I just never loved the SCX24 because it blurs scale. I'm definitely going for some .7" wheels and tires. The reduction motors with clockwork gears are not on my radar. I applaud RC4WD for the direction they are going. I enjoy and appreciate your videos.
They could have knocked it out of the park by making this closer to the quality of the Gelande II 1/18 chassis. BUT WITH ALL THE ARTICULATION. I was minutes in to the video and disappointed that it's all plastic underneath. I don't know, man. Give it time. Don't kill it off before it even gets a chance to take hold. I think Axial really had a major win with the Scx24 so it's hard to deliver something that would compare. BUT, I do totally agree that mods just might make this thing worthwhile. I just hope that companies actually produce parts for it instead completely abandoning the plastform like the RC4WD 1/18 scale.
Looks like a cool little truck. I think the price is high for what you get though. Seems that it's not remotely fast enough to be a trail truck that I would actually take out for a stroll just like my SCX24s. My Panda Hobby Tetra X1 is fantastic in that regard though. It's more than fast enough to take on a brisk walk. Having said that, I do like the idea of building one of these so I'll most likely order one. Seems there is lots of scale potential with this rig that just isn't there with the others on the market.
Coming back to this after 24hrs it strikes me this has more potential than it looks like. There’s a lot of room for different hardware for one thing. Milled is stronger than C-channel. Motor changing is quick. Can’t say that about the RocHobby/hobby plus/FMS 1/18’s. I don’t own an SCX24 so idk how fast that change would be. The body has potential. It’s more durable than any styrene option folks put on the SCX24 and the end result looks more scale.
Great video! Thank you for the honest assessment. I already have the SCX24 and Mini-Z 4x4, but I decided to buy one of these 1/24 TF2s and here's why: 1. I'm not expecting equal crawling performance to the SCX24 2. Scale D44 axles are the best looking ones I've seen so far on a 1/24th scale. A lot of us buy trucks primarily for the axles. 3. Even the SCX24 comes with a not-great motor and is one of the best things to upgrade, so this truck will be no different. 4. The hardbody is not super detailed but the more detailed Mini-Z is also $30-40 more and doesn't have an interior. I also plan to paint/weather the body. 5. It's a new platform to explore and modify. I'll leave one stock and another one I'll put hexes and 1.0" wheels on it.
#3. The SCX24's motor can be easily upgraded to a better 030 or a 050. The 1/24 TF2 uses a N30, which is not so easy to upgrade. You can rig a small brushless inrunner to the N30 gearbox, but I don't see any room for that in this chassis. I don't see myself ever buying one, but I'll be interested to see what other people do with them.
It really would have been nice if it was leaf sprung. I love my Pro Line Ambush. When you run the SCX24 all the time it's nice to switch off to the leaf sprung Ambush for a challenge.
Like the hard body & it has decent proportions overall & a decent interior (LH drive please). The tiny wheels & tires also fit. But there are so many other misses I wouldn't consider buying this. Oh, & a white servo horn? That blends right in 😒
😩 I think RC4WD totally missed the mark on this one. And I suspect you feel the same way after watching your review. Also, BIG mistake on the price. At $169 they are more than SCX24 and equal to FMS Toyota LC80. Both of those trucks perform right out of the box and the former almost has more aftermarket parts than 1/10 scale trucks. It’s too bad because it LOOKS great. Maybe with a Furitek ESC/motor combo it could work. Check out what Furitek can do for mini scale crawling ruclips.net/video/Wlisp402HyI/видео.html
Man these are selling for 199 at my lhs, at that price I'd have been stupid to not get the scx24, and a few months later my scx24 build looks more scale and performs better lmao
To come to the table this late in the 1/24 game I really think they just didn't look at the competition but the good news is I'm super happy I have several scx24 platforms to modify, I love all RC cars but this looks like a ten dollar toy you would buy to just steal the body off and toss the rest.
Great show enjoy watching your updates when I have time, I have a question I hope some people can help me with this, in the past year or so I’ve gotten more into the 1/24 scale world, i’ve recently purchased a few sets of RC4WD rims and tires, The RC cars are used for casual rock crawling no harsh environments never gone through water just some meditating rock crawling on my lunchtime, approximately what’s the life expectancy of the tires for this size car cause I got six months out of my tires and both sets are rotting out on the side walls they’ve rotted off the beads and they’re pretty much junk is this common?
@@scalebuildersguild awww well I’m not running any foams, 1/24 RGT, doesn’t weigh anything so I opted not to run with foams in the tires, but my charisma 1/24 RC4WD tires are set up same as my RGT because they don’t weigh anything in those tires are rotting out also, I am a bit sad
Hmm... . Still hoping Traxxas does a 1/24 scale. Nice tires, though. I have those on my SCX24. And I have done some trailing with it. The optional motor is kind of strange: why not sell it with that installed and ditch the other one?
Thanks for the great review Matt. I think for the price point this truck misses the mark and I'm a bit disappointed. I'm a big RC4WD fan, but I'll pass on this offering for now.
I own 2 of these, one leaving in box, they are fun to personalize, my question to you is, are theses even worth upgrading? I see alot doing it,m, to me its worthless to upgrade, keep it real!! =)
I was on the fence before seeing this but now I think it's a "no" vote. Maybe get 2 of the bodies when they become available and a Gelande2 1/18 to create a 4dr. Edit- I spoke too soon, ordered a blue one last night.🙄
Excellent video as always man. As for the truck; at an RC4WD price point, this doesn't look great. Hate to be negative because I love 1/24 RCs, but it just look like a Walmart toy that can barely move with any finesse. If it's meant to be more true to scale, they should have made sure that the driving and control matched this. The SCX24 can be made scale if you want to, with plenty of 1/24 hop up option out there. And the Kyosho are so much more detailed if you want super scale. A real shame. Hopefully the aftermarket can sort this one out
I always try to find a good point or two in everything that comes across the bench. This is definitely rife with issues, but it could have potential. I hope that RC4WD reads these comments and takes the criticisms seriously and makes some rolling changes to this platform to improve it.
@@scalebuildersguild I hope you're right. If there is any chance of that, I will make another comment with some actual constructive criticism. I understand calling something garbage doesn't help anyone.

Kyosho is so under apreciated, but still, micro tf II looks good too, more some gelande-style chassis but still ok
Ill stick with the axial with the RC4wd wheels and tires. The amount of aftermarket support for the axial makes it one of the best 1/24 trucks.
The outdoor footage looks good at least
Coming back to this after 24hrs it strikes me this has more potential than it looks like. There’s a lot of room for different hardware for one thing. Milled is stronger than C-channel. Motor changing is quick. Can’t say that about the RocHobby/hobby plus/FMS 1/18’s. I don’t own an SCX24 so idk how fast that change would be. The body has potential. It’s more durable than any styrene option folks put on the SCX24 and the end result looks more scale.
Great unbiased review. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Is this just another rebadged hobby plus/ rgt/ enduro 24? Chassis and axles look like it.
I lost count of the “that’s what she said” opportunities
Great video! Thank you for the honest assessment. I already have the SCX24 and Mini-Z 4x4, but I decided to buy one of these 1/24 TF2s and here's why:
1. I'm not expecting equal crawling performance to the SCX24
I was watching this for 30 seconds and you made me laugh. That Deserved alike LOL
Man these are selling for 199 at my lhs, at that price I'd have been stupid to not get the scx24, and a few months later my scx24 build looks more scale and performs better lmao
shelf queen yes
😳😳😳😳 NOOO!! I NEED ONE NOW
Id love to see something this ‘plain’ weathered up
Reminds me quite a bit of the 1/24 Ambush from Pro-Line. Very jerky driving experience
Or the hobby plus cr24 which is 70$ cheaper
Looks like a cool alternative to the Mini Z 4x4! Or even an SCX24 with the AMT Toyota body.
Do you think that hard body would fit (with slight modification) on the older 1/24 ECX Barrage?
Cool Toyota
Finally a 1/24 Yota!
Oops ! Fail to add I also got it in yellow. 🤙🏻
The motors are reminiscent of the Losi micro motors from the Micro T line
Yikes, that is not common at all. I wonder if the foams might be to blame!
I think it would be sweet with the brushless system from the scx24
Hmm... . Still hoping Traxxas does a 1/24 scale. Nice tires, though. I have those on my SCX24. And I have done some trailing with it. The optional motor is kind of strange: why not sell it with that installed and ditch the other one?
Now RC4WD may get some of my money on this one
Is the rear bed a different shade of yellow.
That looks like a lithium ion (LiOn) batt, is it not? ...how bout that transmitter, lol. Did RC4Wd drop the ball on this one? Idk.
Thanks for the great review Matt. I think for the price point this truck misses the mark and I'm a bit disappointed. I'm a big RC4WD fan, but I'll pass on this offering for now.
I think I'll get one to steal the body for one of my scx24s! Haha
Good video very informative🌟👍💥
Thanks for watching!
Can you please do a video on your gray scx24 JLU. 16
Needs a FOCing Furitek!
I own 2 of these, one leaving in box, they are fun to personalize, my question to you is, are theses even worth upgrading? I see alot doing it,m, to me its worthless to upgrade, keep it real!! =)
I'm not a big fan of this, nor do I think it's worth upgrading. But, all that matters, is you're having fun with them!
I was on the fence before seeing this but now I think it's a "no" vote. Maybe get 2 of the bodies when they become available and a Gelande2 1/18 to create a 4dr. Edit- I spoke too soon, ordered a blue one last night.🙄
Matt said "a nice little tiny package" and my mom said I had to stop watching. I hope the rest was good. I only made it to 2:10 😂
I kidd. I finished it. Very honest review.
You got’a duty on the trail..you got’a duuty on the trail🤷🏼♂️😅
Standard Canadian review of a slightly disappointing rc! Great job
Thanks! 👍 Do Canadians give better reviews? Or just not as mean?
@@scalebuildersguild polite and to the point, it's the Canadian review way!
I MIGHT use the axles under an Axial SCX24. Get rid of the wormdrive
Reminds me of Wpl c24
A roller with body of this would be awesome. But will stay a wish, so more electronics which will not be used for me.
I'm thinking about it for a tonka
Just waiting for the body to be sold separately
Would be cool to put a furitek system on 3s in it
Excellent video as always man. Hopefully the aftermarket can sort this one out
Matt, you're being incredibly kind. This thing looks like hot garbage. The only thing of interest is the body. That's it.
Which 24 scale is your personal favorite
Axial SCX24.
Thought those were .7" tires and wheels? Not 1" like most. That seems like a mistake in the mini crawler wheel/tire market.
"Super Scale 0.7" Beadlock Wheels
RC4WD Mickey Thompson 0.7" Baja Claw TTC Scale Tires"
I trail my SCX24 and Pandas all the time, but I know there limits. This one is $100.00, good for a child or indoors only.
OHSEM... I will put the landrover body in that kit
The black blazer? What model is that??
TRX4 with the lift kit. Not available from Traxxas, you'll have to modify yourself.
Great looking truck. But is the bottom of the cab and bottom of the bed not supposed to line up? It drives me nuts seeing that mismatch.
And how did they manage to make such a cool truck drive like a complete toy? Pretty disappointed in how it drives.
