Henry being polite.
He has to be polite. They all depend on not offending those who fund their lives by providing the cars. And that's the reason they NEVER talk about the corrupt manipulative lying cheating nature of "customer service" within the car industry.
@@numbereightyseven watch Savagegeese he's probably the most honest car reviewer on YT and he's not afraid to criticise
I've an interesting angle on this as I A) Sell BMWs and B) Have an M135i as a demonstrator. You will be amazed just how many people say "its not an M140" "Its not Rear Wheel Drive" "Its not a 6 cylinder, Yet when we sold a RWD 6 Cylinder M140 they all bemoaned it for not being a Golf R basically.
As a person who personally owned an M140i with and LSD too I will say this car does everything better.... bar straight line out right pace.
And the sound
Now those same people are complaining that the new Golf 8R is fugly
How many of those M140i rwd heroes never made a car oversteer in their life or turned off the traction control I wonder?
Plenty of enthusiast drivers, especially the generation that grew up with rwd cars like RS2000, Lotus Sunbeam, 325i and the like will have been happy to have fun with the M140i but 90% of drivers are scared out of their wits if a car slides from either end.
Pass. BMW need to fire their entire design team and bring some proper styling to the table like they used to do back in the 90s and 00s.
Bring back the bangle era
@@lewdyson4744 Bangle got his share of criticism at the time ;-)
Come on at least it's not the M4
70's & 80's were my favourite eras for Bmws design. This car just sounds like my Mini Cooper S jcw
MrJef06 he did but they aged beautifully
This new 135i will make the old shape straight 6 rwd 135i look way more appealing and mabye even legendary
RWD: Gone
Inline 6: Gone
Manual: Gone
Shame on you BMW
New M3, RWD, Inline 6, Manual.
Why should BMW lose money by offering a M135i with RWD and Manual transmission when more than 90% of the M140i sales was in xDrive + Automatic Gearbox. But I agree about the 6 cylinders, but this is not BMW pur will but an regulation/emission matter.
Now, let's hope for the next M2.
@@Rob.One. Not only that, but 140i only made up 4% of 1 series sales.
FWD means more space , less fuel.
Also its not BMW's fault for emission regs, thats on the EU and Greta.
You forgot one more
Kidney grill: *BIGGER !!* lol

Kidney grill: *BIGGER !!* lol
I’ve just taken delivery of one of these, I’ve fully optioned it and also had the dealer swap out the cerium grey parts with gloss black before collection, I understand how people don’t like the loss of the 6 pot, but this car should be taken on it’s own merits, if you haven’t already, I recommend a drive in the F40 M135i, it’s a very capable car, I had second thoughts just before delivery of my new car but I needn’t have worried, it truly is fantastic, remember, it’s an S3, Golf R, A35 competitor, and as such it excels in every way over them, it’s not a replacement for the M140 (that’s in development) !🙂 PS: pictures don’t do the car justice, the car looks far far nicer in person, it’s definitely a grower!
Congrats! I agree, it's seriously annoying reading through all the keyboard warriors who have not driven or even seen it in person rant about it based on statistics. You also pointed out that it looks better in person. That actually seems to be the case with a lot of BMWs, they're not photogenic, but in person their fantastic.
Just got a black saphire with tech pack and pro pack. I went to the dealership to get the last of the m140s. As already owned a 2016 1 series. In the flesh i was amazed how much better the f40 looked. Much chunkier and more aggresive. For me its not even close. The 140i is a bit faster in a straight line and sounds a bit better. And thats where it ends. I didnt think twice about shelling out the extra cash.I keep having to make excuses to jump in and drive the m135i. Its brilliant and very very fast.
No it doesnt exceed a S3. The new one is beautiful
I agree. Not sure about excelling over the new S3 but they're both great cars.
Im taking delivery of a 2022 model hopfully in January i agree so many people hating on a car yet they've not driven it. Im currently in a m140i and great as that car is the fact remainss that im not interested in driving sideways around roundabouts, im not interested in driving on McDonald's car parks.
This car is for the grown ups and BMW know this.
You want sideways by a M2 BMW make those too
Having now owned both the 140 and now the new 135, I can honestly say I’m glad i modernised. And from the rear, it’s one of the best looking hot hatches
You still feel the same months on? Lots of people say that it feels worse to drive etc
@@jameswrightson744 I do, loving it..
That’s good to hear! I’m now debating it but must admit I also fancy the upcoming 240i
My only gripe is the new gearbox - do you time it much slower? I also like to track mine so wondering how it would cope versus the m140i
@@mrjamesmay3548 I have no issues with the gear box, well if you avoid eco. My 140 was a manual and I do miss that
Still cant get used to the 4 cylinder and the shape from this new 1 series.
such a high quality review! Thank you. You got my sub
Very smooth and cohesive videography. Enjoyable review, thank you,
I'm sure it's objectively a good car, but it's an insult to the BMW brand.
and to the loyal long term fans.. they are moving to new customers in the emerging market. no wonder we cant adapt to the change at all..
Very true, but in this competitive sector, just make a car for the enthusiast aren't enough to satisfy the accountants. Also, if you aren't enthusiast, you wouldn't notice the difference anyway. Sign of the time.
Personally, a used M140i with a retrofit LSD would be a better buy.
@@shin-eisato5788 bmw is just shit now
It’s still the Ultimate Driving Machine regardless if it’s FWD, RWD, or AWD.
This car is a giant misconception of all enthusiasts, because it is not meant for them. Even if they still had the rwd platform there wouldn't be a 6 cylinder anymore due to emissions. Now they have the perfect excuse, this is a car only meant for the mass market, using a cheap Mini platform to gain money and to get down their fleet emissions. Nothing more. Even something like the M135i is not really meant to satisfy typical BMW customers, it is more of a hero car for generic young people that need to flex or something, for people that only care about status. This way, they attract new customers to get the sales up. The general public doesn't care about which wheels are driven, in dense urban traffic no one will notice that in the first place. And that's everything. If we still want to have hero cars like an M2 or 8 series or whatever, we have to accept that in modern times this can only be justified financially and from an emissions standpoint through cars like those. That's the same reason why sportscar manufacturers make SUVs - they need the money and eventually cut emissions with future electric SUVs and stuff. That's how it is, it's 2020 after a financial crisis, an economy crisis, hard regulations due to climate change and now hard times after corona.
The era of bonkers creations like an E60 M5 or an Audi Q7 V12 TDI and all of them - it's over. It's nice that it existed, but now we live in other times, and we can do nothing else but accept it and live with it.
This probably the most balanced review I have seen on the net and I have watched most, not lingering in the past but looking at the future, which I think is always the best thing to do. this is the tip of the iceberg don't forget its a platform for development, give it 5 years and this will be 400bhp and rear bias 4x4 switchable watch this space.
Could you do a head-to-head with the previous M140i?
Would be lovely to see just by how much has BMW messed up again :)
Check CARWOW, the m140i was quicker
@@user-nj4kn7jr5i the M140i is quicker, has much better tuning potential, looks better, sounds better, engine runs smoother, pulls harder throughout the rev range, is more responsive & handles better.
It’s not an M140 replacement though, the new M140 is in development and has been seen at the ring recently.
@@cfbm125 Is it RWD?
vomErsten the F40 M135i is xDrive and new M140i will have an AWD system much like the A45s with rear biased drift mode.
This reminds me... I need to head to the grocery.
I love your videos so nice, thorough and a good honest review 👍 not to mention very professional 😊
Guys, I understand your BMW fanboy attitude of RWD, 6 cyl turbo, etc. But remember, BMW is as much a premium brand as it is the go-to brand for relatively affordable and desirable driver’s cars. This new M135i is not the BMW we would all want, yes, but it’s BMW trying to nod toward that premium brand aspect. This new M135i has a much nicer, high-quality interior, more space in the back and is slightly bigger on boot space. The previous gen 1-series did the performance and driver’s car aspect so well, it kind of lost out on the other key aspect of a hot hatch, practicality. This for me, is more of a hot hatch than the previous M140i / M135i, because it strikes a seemingly better balance between live-ability and performance. Plus, I feel the lack of RWD not to be that much of a problem, will you drift into your driveway or your kid’s school drop off? I don’t think so... 4WD is more secure for the petrolhead families BMW are targeting this car at, as well as for cold and wet climates like the UK... 😂 I would not to trash an M140i on a narrow British road when it’s pouring rain... All of the above is my own opinion, I respect your own, but I feel like this car is being a bit misunderstood by the enthusiast community. Although, I do agree the design could be nicer, I prefer the look of the previous 1-series.
I actually love the design of the car
“M” 🤣🤣🤣 yeah ok BMW, we believe you.
Thanks for the nice review! Thinking of this too
I'm picking one up next week and as a daily driver it's excellent and fits the bill perfectly. Interior quality superior to the A35, new S3 or new Golf and great to have the choice to use the idrive and a few buttons, far safer. Exterior may not be to everybody's liking but it is at least a new design. Most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the old Golf, A35, S3 and the new ones and I'm a fan of the larger grill (the grills on my current 1 series are looking decidedly to small now.) and if I had the dosh I would go for the new M3. All to our own.
I have had mine 6 months and whilst it's not the prettiest car, it's an awful lot of fun and has provided many a fantastic drive with lots of excitement at roundabouts and overtakes. It's not an M140i replacement, stop comparing Apples with Lemons. Interior is stunning, seats are super comfortable, and 40mpg + on long journeys. If you want an every day car that will beat the majority of cars off the line that you'll meet day to day, then you can't go far wrong with this. Yes it doesn't sound fantastic, but at least you don't pee off the neighbours with an obnoxiously loud exhaust!!!!
Would like to hear your thoughts against the Mini Clubman JCW as they share similar components.
This is very wonderful and I also liked the presentation of the BMW M 135i, it is a very good ball show.
Ran an F20 for 4 years, F40 for nearly a year. Other than engine/exhaust noise the F40 is a superior car in every area.
Its not faster, ever. Also its not as good looking.
@@MY-mp6bq On the right road, in the right weather i.e. the types I encounter regularly I think it probably is.
But thats just a subjective opinion, as are looks.
Down on power and defiantly looks as well though, ticks all the wrong boxes for me
We bought the last 140i to be sold in the country last year and absolutely love it.Kept mileage low,at less than 2,000 miles as it is a keeper. However the new m135i is far superior on the inside, just not as unique.
There’s no point in keeping the mileage low. BMW sold thousands of them, it’s not rare. Go out and drive it.
Insert Witty Name I get the point that there are an awful lot of them around. I just feel that keeping it for weekends and in mint condition will just make me happy😀I am not keeping it for any financial reward in the future, just the satisfaction of caring for a piece of history.
We have a 140 and the new 135. The 140 great car but 135 to use on a daily basis can’t fault it great performance superb cabin and drove it the snow today x drive superb
I agree. Had mine out too. Brilliant car compared to the old 1 series.
@henry catchpole What’s the latest update, now that you have used it for a few months?
Will it use 7th & 8th gear when cruising on the motorway & 70 in comfort or does it have to be in eco pro?
Pcp crowd will love it......
Nice review Henry and a welcome change from judging a car based on drag racing in a straight line. I am interested in overall proposition in terms of actual fun on the road. The 128ti has had some good reviews, down on power compared with the M135i (albeit the same engine) but 80kg less without the Xdrive, so a back to back would be interesting... Same sort of question used to be posed about the Golf GTi specials and the R, at least until VAG decided that buttons were too expensive and alienated their target customer base.
Lovely car😍
Fantastic car.. even better when you add an exhaust to it. I have the 2019 model with pops n bangs.
Interestingly, I coded in comfort plus which gives out burbles when you let your foot off the gas!
Is the Adaptive Suspension option worth having?
I’m considering a low image Sirocco R had you done a test on that particular model?
ahh drove that road today, very local to me and a really nice drive :)
What cars do have that edge sound today that one could get for 20k wrx sti maby and suggestions
If you get a chance, I'd be interested to hear your comparison with the MINI Clubman JCW - same platform and engine but MINI-fied rather than BMW-fied.
I see you wrote that 2 yrs ago. Drove both the JCW Clubman an the "updated" 135i xDrive. Wanted the JCW to be my preference. JCW didnt't seem to be refined. The engine was very loud and sounded not attractive and artificial inside the car. The Beer was astonishing I liked the ride, fantastic suspension, no more tear on the wheel. Steering feels numb and won't tell you zip, but it's precise and you know where it's going. I drove inline6 for over 20 yrs now, I didn't want to like that 4 zyl-engine. I think they put together an attracive all over package in direct comparison to the S3, A35 and Golf R, ordered mine in full spec and an individual color.
Beautiful colour! 👽
Got a 125i which has a 2l turbo engine (not as powerful obviously) but I do love the rear wheel drive very much and it's just brilliant fun. Compare it to the finale edition if you can, the last of the rear wheel drive BMW 1 series. I'm okay with the engine downsize as it's cheaper to maintain, insure, purchase... but the driving aspect is what I'm really curious about. Thanks!
What’s the HK sound set up like? Good value?
2 cylinders BMW M115i up next
What about a 330i g20 as a long termer? How and how much is it better (or worse) than a "normal" 320d, as a daily driver car? I'm so much undecided..! Many thanks..! As always, you rock..!
Was there ever an updated long term review on this?
This really reminds me of Chris Harris’s E28 M5 video.. especially with the slow motion shots!
I might also learn from here ... So what basically happens when you engage the electronic brake then the battery is taken out for some reason and the vehicle was in neutral? Any added info will be appreciated.
Nonetheless, I've always been a keen fan of the park brake lever, pull it up and move out worry free till you drop it!
While the stock spec is not particularly attractive, the black accenting that comes with the m performance package as well as the m performance parts, including 19 inch wheels, significantly improves the appearance of the new m135i. My one was spec’d for the NZ market which may explain the more exciting exhaust note - it appears to have a deeper rumble, and is beginning to pop and bang more since taking delivery a few weeks ago (currently 400km on the clock so still ‘driving in’). For bursts of spirited suburban driving, comfort and practicality, the new m135i works very well.
can u compare against A35 & S3?
Would you say it's as good as an Austin Maestro?
is there going to be an update on this?
Is the adaptive suspension a must?? Anyone know?
The shape of the current 1 series is growing on me. I actually quite like it . The old m135i/ m140i were brilliant cars, they looked mean & muscular while the normal 1 series didn’t look that great to me
Great video, but I can't see any pros to this 1 series vs the last one
What bike are you riding Henry?
yes please do comparison with a35 and golf r
M135i vs mulsanne please. Considering my new daily. Thanks.
Will these available in Australia ?
I'm not sure this is in any way better than a new golf R which is likely cheaper. Can we do a head to head comparo ?
The comments are so funny and predictable.
This a truly modern car with modern technology and bang up to date modern styling.
It always amuses me how BMW owners like living in the past. ;-)
I'd take an M4 with 5k miles and one elderly previous owner for the same money.
As always though, have to commemorate Henry for being fantastic as his job.
Love to see it against an i30n or the next gen i30n. Considering the price of each car, I’d love to know which would give more thrills!
there must be some market research (design testing ) for the big grill concept , I am really curious as to who likes it. People here in Canada and USA are not big fans and a lot of European car reviewers are not on board as well so who is it serving well with this grill??
A head to head with its german competition. The S3 and the A35.
Brilliant car 🚙
Almost 5 years on and to me (an M140i owner) the styling looks good now that I am used to it. What sort of MPG do these get? I hear that they are actually worse than the B58 engined car.
What mpg on city driving have m135i???
One Month ago I had to replace my Manuel m135i that I bought new in 2013. My choice to replace It has been.... an M2 (1 previous owner , 15 000 km, bought at bmw with factory warranty).
Henry please, tell us really what You think about this m135i évolution.
For the same amount of money, Henry, could You please compare the new m135i with a second hand m2 ?
Where is this amazing road?
I’m interested in the 135i vs Clubman JCW
Is that Salisbury plain?
Hmm. Looks nice. I came here coz xdrive was mentioned but by the sounds of it. Actually it's a front wheel drive and in winter it will be rubbish ?
Get educated, or listen to the video.
Henry, pls line it up with its sibling, the Mini. Could a Cooper upstage its pricier twin?
I have a 130i M sport (e87) and it’s perfect. The M135i of rear drive vintage is tempting, but it lost natural aspiration. Now we’ve not only lost that, but the manual option and rear drive. Don’t take it’s uniqueness away. It pleases me to see young chaps and chappesses that chose lower spec 1 series instead of a Fiesta, as they’re getting their early driving years with proper end drive. They’re taking all the fun things away 😭
Answer to your last question: I’d like to see a comparison with a rear drive 135i and a four wheel drive hatch. Is it closer to one or the other? 😊 I’ll drive. 😃😃
Lol still laughing at all the M140i fan boy hate. It’s so funny. Poor things still in a big strop. Haha. Great video from an unbiased reviewer. Great to see a BMW nailing the “golf r” formula and sprinkling some BMW magic. Well done BMW. you can still get a 6cyl RWD beemer if you really want one (3 series anyone?). But now we have more choice! Happy days!
Head to head with the Mini GP
I wonder how does this tally against a Fiesta St-3
BMW actually revised this car so now it’s 49% to front wheels and 51% to rear.
They also updated the gearbox and engine.
Must say as a guy who has driven most cars the revised M135i is a brilliant daily !
Please do a proper film with the 812 GTS. Please I need it. I want it. From Carfection. The world needs a carfection full film of the return of the v12 spider.
The front wheel drive bias puts me off to be honest. Test drive booked, so we'll see what happens. Actually like the way the S3 Haldex System feels on the move, so it'll be interesting to see how this compares.
You will need make a competition new M135 vs M140 and Mini JCW GP!!!!
How is it compared to the 118i
Henry, please do a head to head with the BMW i3s.
Definitely wouldn't give up my M135i lci for one of these , six cylinder, manual all day 👍
Atleast you all get the hatch. We only get a Ford Focus body sedan in the states...
Yes please against the A35. ... Perhaps the Audi S3? A mini countryman JCW?
Look i like the M135i ... And i like BMWs... But given the choice, I'm struggling to think of a reason why I'd chose it over an A35.
Compare against the golf r or s3
Bike shirt? 👍👍👍
I’ve had one of these for a year now, and it’s a cracking bit of kit. The comments from the muppets that haven’t actually driven one are hilarious!
Well the muppets recognise a beautiful car when they see one ! This has to be one of ugliest cars on the road.
#muppets rule
Will BMW's problem be that by churning out cars like the new 1-series, in the long term they won't be able to charge the same premium for their upper level cars as they do now? Are they hurting their brand at the core?
Would love to see a comparison against the Hyundai i30N
not in the same class
Just put my deposit down for this- the 2013 version that is!
Have any of you guys in the comments actually driven in and spent any time with this car?? It’s very very good.
So is an S3, without the terrible visage.
vomErsten honestly, pictures don’t do the M135i justice, plus swapping out the grill to gloss black further improves it and it really does grow on you, the trouble is with the new S3 is that the exterior is much like the 8v and the interior is very plastic based and cheap feeling.
@@cfbm125 I don't disagree about the new S3, but only because the facelifted 8V looks even better than the new one inside and out (I may be biased, I own one). But the hatch doesn't work for the new BMW, the proportions work better in its M235 Gran Coupe format.
I test drove this yesterday and the new Ford Focus ST, by far the Ford Focus was the better drive.
Henry, 128ti or M135i?
That's a looker isn't it!
Best thing about this car.
It'll be a bargain on the used market in a few years. 😂
Was that the new M135 i that went past me ?
When ?
Exactly my point 🚗🤷♂️
So they made another corolla. Nice. Only a hatch this time.
On that note, nice Mini.
Always loved your content. The take's quality are simply amazing... It's got a very nice character! Keep creating buddy.
Cheers from Brazil 🚀🚀👏👏
How quite is it inside seems very noisy
so: uggers, fwd-based 4wd, 4pot
You'd be better off getting a used Golf Rrrrrrr if you want dat (except the golf looks nicer lol)
But it’s shit inside
Mitchell Donachie in a golf R?...
Agree, Golf R is better than this M135i
M140i is the drivers car to get though, this B58 engine is only superior in fuel economy and emissions and inferior in every other way.
@@mitchelldonachie1798 I can only assume from this comment that you have never been in a Golf R, they have very nice interiors for their price point, they feel very Audiesque.
flacjacket nope been in one, impressive car no denying that. Hate the interior build quality. Just feels cheap imo
