This would be left in at the bottom of the basket base, the part that sits on the table. In my opinion, the wooden base part is actually sturdier and flatter than if I crocheted a round circle on the bottom with yarn, so I generally wouldn't want to remove it.

I went out today to get some, but the place had lots of yarn for making bags but no base. I have used up all the ones I had.
