In this video I talk about three ways to get into your motorcycle gas cap in order to replace it, if you’ve lost the key.
There are three main ways to get into a lock. Punching, drilling and picking.
Picking is the cheapest and doesn’t do any damage to the lock, so if you plan on simply having another key made, this is the way to go.
Punching, involves taking a metal object such as a screw driver or a flat punch of some kind, and driving it into the lock in order to shear off the pins so that the lock cylinder will spin freely. The same can be done with a rotary drill.
These last two steps are messy and do not allow you to rekey the lock. I plan to keep the lock as a spare and will eventually rekey it to the new key (with the new lock) that I ordered.
I’m just here to say 5 years later I watched this video picked the lock in 5 min and you saved me 300$ lol you the man wherever you are in life I hope your blessed lol
Well thank you, my good sir! I really appreciate that! I am blessed. 😎 I’m married now, with one kid! Hoping to do some more bike videos in the not too distant future haha
Excellent! Note the little double bobble head one you showed first works instantly on my '91 ZXR400
That is a fantastic! 😎
I am glad I could help!
5:14 He picks the lock. You're welcome.
Real mvp. So much fuking talking 😂😂
Nice video. I appreciate the extra info that included about the pins being on both sides of the tumbler if you key has 2 sides. Makes sense but that didnt occur to me until this video.
Michael Knollmeyer Thank you very much! I really appreciate the positive comment good sir! ☺️🍻
Break the lockpick set out and get the rake, just touch the tension aid for the lightest pressure and raking time. Raking takes every little tension and works wonders on tank locks. Picking is a mater of seconds with rake and the proper amount of light tension.
Nice one Maniac, you make it look easy. I've bought an MT09 with no keys and was looking for guidance for getting the gas cap off. Your video was exactly what I was searching for. Cheers.
Well thank ya good sir!
I appreciate that. I’m very glad I could help! Hopefully you got the tank all opened up! 😁
Thanks
Pin tumbler lock I didn’t realize only one side had pins helps
Great video, took me a minute and never picked a lock before. Now I can put gas in the bike lol
Glad I could help!
Very cool, dude. Thanks.
No problem! I’m glad you liked it!
I undid the nuts around the edge then wiggled with it fir hours got it pull out then took it to a key cutting shop oh and also took the ignition of the upped yoke it as well they matched both if them and gave me 2 keys of both i did surprising what they can do.
Thanks man I bought a 1990 Kawasaki zephyr 550 and the gas tank would not unlock with the key but like you I used to play with locks in highschool so thanks for the info
Sweet! Let us know when you get it unlocked! I’m really happy to have helped!
Bro I have use this technique my bike fuel tank is unlock thanks to you , You are a real RUclipsr I am like you
Aryan Sharma Thank you good sir! I’m glad i could help. I also really appreciate the good feedback! ☺️
@@motormaniac1 No Thanks! You will help me in my bad condition. S
Thanks dawg. Just ordered a used gas tank for my bike and it still has OG gas cap on it. Going to try the lock pick method.
WhiteCarbon Glad I could help! If the lock pick method doesn’t work, drills are messy but still fun! Good luck, and let us know how it works out! 🍻
@@motormaniac1 yeah, I really really don't want to use a a drill. This tank is super clean inside and getting metal shavings in it sounds horrible :/ haha hopefully I can pick it
WhiteCarbon You’ll be able to pick it. It just takes a little patience! :D Good luck!!!
@@motormaniac1 YOOOO! I did it!!! I ordered the Sparrow Tuxedo set and it took about 12 min! I almost gave up haha
WhiteCarbon Ayyyy that is absolutely awesome! ☺️🍻
Thanks. Very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
I thought the ignition was single sided as well? Atleast I think they are on GSX-R’s Yamaha may be different
Wouldnt punching or drilling tumbler put metal shavings in gas tank?
It would, and I thought I mentioned that in the video. It’s a messy way to do it, so like I said, picking is a more viable option unless you absolutely can’t pick it.
I put a flat head screw driver in mine and banged it in and forced it over, don’t recomend unless you’re removing it for good
TEO YAMAHA R1 Hahaha, yep!
It obviously pretty much ruins the gas cap haha.
Lock picking it worked on my 2016 r6!
Got a 06 kawi Z1000. Broke my key off in the tank. Can i just remove the nuts going around the cap and replace it with an aftermarket or does it not work like that?
Usually it does not work like that. Otherwise anyone could just open your tank with a wrench.
Just remember you can just unhook a gas line from the petcock and let it drain to siphon lmao
That’s all well and good. I guess you could spend 800$ and buy a new gas tank.
OR, you can spend 30$ and just get a new lock… You just have to open the lock, either by picking or drilling.
U can ride to locksmith might be easier they can make copy I lost my mum's car key so undone lock out the door took it in.
Thank you so much
You're most welcome! 😊
Locked gas tank no problem? Just pick lock! It’s easy!
He says if you lose your key its a moot point on ruining the lock? There is a key code inside the cap to have a new key made so not exactly moot...js....but this method is the way to go to get to that code
Distant Thunder Well look at that! You learn something new every day. Thanks for the information!
I found a 2001 r6 in a tow yard been sitting for many years
They were reluctant to sell it to me since they clearly remembered the prior owner lost his life
Anyway after chasing down a different owner he accepted my offer of $500 dollars
Proceeded to remove every part with any key related numbers, and taking them straight to my closest Yamaha dealer
After running every number, what I learned is that it really somewhat comes down to from where it was sold
Each dealer generally registers those numbers
Maybe that’s BS , but they told me they could not produce a working key to me
A different cycle my 92 Vance and Hines ltd FZR 600 using a mirror I got the numbers off the bottom of the ignition 3 digits I think it was
And was able to get a perfectly cut key ready to go key
But that 2001 they couldn’t produce it, and said what they have done is find a key making shop to hand cut a new one for $60 or $70 dollars
And sold me a blank Yamaha key for only $30 dollars, Vaseline not included
I ended up spending $25 dollars on eBay for a new ignition with key, gas cap and back seat lock included
My Yamaha shop use to treat me much better, anymore not so much
They want 6 months to just look at a cycle needing repairs to tell you what needs to be done
They obviously don’t care or value my business
I don’t spend enough on new cycles each year
Sad but true
Our world is tainted⚠️
so what is the permanent solution? Once unlocked can the pins be removed?
Grey Dog The permanent solution would be shearing the pins off with the screw driver, the lock would be broken and un-useable.
If you picked it, you could then theoretically re-pin the lock to a new key. It does appear that the core comes out.
However, you could also get a new lock for for most sport bikes for under 10$ on eBay.
Is your hand a spider made of sausages? Great video thankyou 😊
How do you pick ignition for a motorcycle I lost my keys also
Ignitions are completely different, and something that I have no experience with :/
I know I'm three years late on this, but I wired a two wire On/Off toggle switch up to my bike and did one wire from the switch going to one wire for the ignition, the other wire going to the remaining two wires for the ignition(mine only had three wires) I believe all ignition switch wires need to be connected to each other at the same time to properly power everything, regardless of where there are more or less wires for that ignition.. For me, the lights come on and my bike becomes able to attempt starting once all three wiress on the ignition make a connection to each other when the toggle switch is set to On.
TL;DR - To be on the safe side, you can try to find one or more videos specifically for your bike on how to wire up its ignition switch and then go from there.
You should do a video on the rear seat lock I lost my key and have to replace everything
Logan Opfer Thank you very much for the input! I’ll definitely do that! :P
Motor maniac please, that would be awesome and greatly appreciated.
On my EX250J the rear seat lock is cable-actuated so you can take all the plastics apart then pull the cable. Also, the solo seat cowl that replaces the rear seat has a design flaw where anyone can non-destructively remove it without tools. You just lift the rear peg out of the rubber grommet then rotate the whole thing until the spring-loaded striker retracts on the slotted pin. You can then lift it completely off and raid the contents of your under-seat tail storage, locking it back down like normal when you are done. Kawasaki never fixed this.
I'd rather do that, but imma have to do the first method, my tank is locked up from moisture and trying use to lube and my key has split it almost in half for the second time
The new locks can be had on eBay for like 15$. It’s worth the swap once you get it off 😁
@@motormaniac1 i appreciate that, I'll order one soon.
There's a piece of debris in mine, I can't get the key in to open it.
You could use a key hook, or a broken key extractor!
That might work. Most smiths use those to pull debris or broken key pieces from the key-way.
@@motormaniac1 thank you! I'll give it a try
How the hell yo keys go flying off the side of a cliff?!?!
Joe Garofalo II Unfortunately the keychain broke when the bike fell!
@@motormaniac1 damn! Glad you is ok!
Thanks sir
Raghavendra P Not a problem at all! Thanks for watching!
Mine has the key, it turns but ot wont open
You might try turning it the other way as well!
It might need a little lock lubricant. They make a special lube just for that!
Never drill your lock out with a drill spark will at night the fuel
Thats actually a very good point!
I didn’t even think to address this in the video.
Although this is true, and something to be aware of, most motorcycle locks are made from a very low quality, soft metal. Risk of sparks is very low.
Second, if you use a mineral or drilling oil, this will arrest any sparks and keep the surface from producing enough friction to cause a Sparling event.
And what if your dad don’t know a locksmith?
Well then watch the video and you’ll learn how to do it without a locksmith! 😂
I dont really think youre giving thieves any tips they dont already know!
Yea! I was thinking the same, but better safe than sorry! People get sued over the absolutely craziest things. 😂
My keyhole on my old 250 was rusted or something it was extremely hard to open with a key and one day i was trying to open it and the key snapped in half😂 so i have half of a key stuck in the keyhole impossible to get out i took a hammer and screwdriver to it and it aint coming out but luckily on a 250 you can just take the bolts out with an allen wrench and it comes off without having to open it so that was just an inconvenience for me
Ninja 250? Those have another screw under the lid. Normally you have to drill through to get to that one. That said, there are cheap Chinese replica Ninja 250 lock sets for the EX250F and EX250J/K. They also have Ninja 300/400 lock sets since those are EX250L/M and EX250P in some markets. That said, I found new/old stock genuine Kawasaki lock sets for my EX250J that were on clearance for even less. There’s no reason to have an unsecured racing cap or different keys for a street Ninja 250.
Great video thanks 🙏
JuStKeePiNItReAL Thanks for the positive feedback! 🍻☺️ Im glad I could help!
Video starts at 3:50
Thanks!
You can use a screwdriver
Takes 2 seconds
@@silverscythe1986 As a punch? To punch out the lock?
Because otherwise you really cannot just turn the lock with a screwdriver. I’m sure plenty of people have tried. Maybe if you could get enough leverage, you could shear the pins off with the blade, but that would take quite a bit of force….
Maybe Mines already broken, im replacing the ignition and all the locks but I can open my tank with a flathead I just gotta twist it around while turning
Going to the point?
Enrico Pietro If you bothered to watch the video, you’d find out! Also, the proper English is “Getting to the point?” Going implies motion, since the verb “to go” itself is a verb of motion. The verb “to get” however, can be used in this instance.
@@motormaniac1 thanks, i appreciate!
Can you come to michigan and pick my lock? Hahaha
I wish man!
Michigan is a pretty cool place! Hahaha absolutely gorgeous motorcycle riding country too!
Dude. I literally made myself a double butterfly out of a radio removal tool and did it.
Bryced0805 Sweet! I’ve made my own homemade picks as well!
Motor Maniac or Cat Burglar?
Aberrant Lawyer Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
@@motormaniac1 I just bought a 1987 Suzuki Intruder VS700 however no key to the gas tank. That's why I was watching. I love your channel...and respect your 'skills'.

uriel arguelles You’re very welcome!
I’m sorry for your poor attitude in life. Must suck to have a disposition like that.
@@motormaniac1 hahahahhahaha I agree some people are so disabled
Jesus Christ dude learn how to get to the point!! That could have been a 15 second video.
Pat Haskell You sir, have a negative outlook on life. I pity how miserable that must be.
Motor Maniac Dont mind him. I appreciate the time you took to explain things.
lupohki Well thank you! I do very much appreciate that!
Talks too much about nothing
get to the point.
dwl I did! Thats why the video is up!
Dude, shut up and go straight to the point, yeezus !
I’m so sorry that you have such a poor attitude in life. It must really be terrible :(
Just get to the point please. Nobody is here for why you lost key. Nobody gives a rats but. If you can do this get to it all ready. I can't take this. No help to me. What I got to buy lock pick tools.
First, butt, is spelled with two T’s. Second, fast forward is a thing, so you have no excuse for not using it. Third, your disposition is very sad. I can’t imagine living with an attitude like yours. Must be a terrible way to live.
Wtf is that video
So you got to pick it every time then
I mean, you could!
To replace the cap, it has to be open! So in order to replace the cap, you would need to pick it open. This is the way to get it open if you’re replacing it and don’t have he key…
@@motormaniac1 trying to get the old 92 running again and I can't find the keys
@@jasonlogan5765Sometimes there's a key code on the inside of the cap. True for a lot of Hondas, I don't know about Yamahas.
